Tom Cruise Also Making Flying Tigers?

Tom Cruise will take to the skies in a possible battle of two aerial movies with his upcoming Flying Tigers, which features the same subject matter and title as John Woo and Terence Chang's own Flying Tigers.

Deadline New York reports that Tom Cruise is teaming up with New Regency and Fox for the project. The studios have hired Kirk Ellis to rewrite the original script by Christopher McQuarrie, which focuses on a squadron of World War II Japanese fighter pilots who are trained by an American, General Claire Chennault. The site's story indicates that Tom Cruise has always wanted to portray a fighter pilot.

We last reported on John Woo's Flying Tigers back in August, when it was announced the production was teaming up with IMAX. That report states that shooting would start in Spring of 2011. Since the New Regency/Fox project has ordered a new rewrite, it isn't clear when they will start shooting. John Woo's Flying Tigers is based on the same true story that the Tom Cruise project will revolve around.

Flying Tigers comes to theaters in 2011.
