Movie history By: Ryan Gilbey. guardian.co.uk, Friday 1 January 2010 21.00 GMT,
In two more weeks, Denzel Washington takes on Gary Oldman to save his precious book in “The Book of Eli”, the latest movie from the brothers Hughes. It’s their first post-apocalyptic action-adventure, with loads of martial arts, swordplay, and Mila Kunis trying to seduce Eli for that book. Tough go there, girl, cause ol Eli looks pretty harden and not prone to seduction in this movie. Check out some new images below.
Co-starring Jennifer Beals, Michael Gambon, Ray Stevenson, Chris Browning, Tom Waits, Frances de la Tour, Luis Bordonada, and Joe Pingue. Grab a read January 15, 2010.
It may be the start of a new year, but as far as cinema is concerned that doesn't mean it can't also be the end of the world. Even before January is out, audiences will have been given two gruelling visions of the future from which to choose. You can experience your dystopian forecast in moderately Hollywood-friendly form in The Book of Eli, in which Denzel Washington battles unwashed marauding types in a harsh futuristic landscape. Or you can take your medicine straight in the form of The Road, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel about a father and son trudging through a world scarred by environmental collapse.
Long before such films, or recent animated equivalents like WALL-E or 9, we have harboured a cultural compulsion to imagine our collective demise.
The need was once sated by that popular best-seller, the Old Testament, but latter-day audiences have found that the disaster movie hits the spot as effectively. This genre hit an early commercial peak in 1936 with San Francisco, which restaged the 1906 earthquake, and In Old Chicago, about the Chicago fire of 1871, before stretching through 1970s hits such as The Towering Inferno (skyscraper blaze) and The Poseidon Adventure (capsized ocean liner).
One trend in disaster movies was to use catastrophe as a form of divine retribution for mankind's hubris. Implicit in The Towering Inferno was the suggestion that human beings were playing God by designing structures that reached to the heavens. The 1970s Airport films tried unsuccessfully to balance their awe at advances in aviation with the suspicion that we might eventually have to pay for the sin of pride.
Recently this line of reasoning has become untenable. An increasingly secular society was never going to have much truck with a storytelling format that hinges on God bringing us down a peg or two. Then there is the unavoidable fact that real-life calamities tend to unfold much faster, and more sinisterly, than anything a film studio could cook up.
A modern disaster movie couldn't hope to compete with the realities of the post-9/11 world, where a screenwriter's cleverest plots can be eclipsed by the ingenuity of a bomber intent on smuggling explosives onto a plane. Projects that take nine months or more to reach the screen will have been upstaged by the evening news many times over during the course of production.
This is why global warming is, to use a non-secular term, such a godsend for movie narratives. With the divine retribution angle now an anachronism, and international terrorism making Airport-style plots too near the knuckle, climate change as a plot device provides the right blend of terrible plausibility, comforting distance and chastening subtext. We know global warming is under way – well, most do – and yet the phenomenon is gradual enough to rule out any risk of reality stealing a march on fiction. The director Roland Emmerich has been a notable opportunist in this regard, grafting environmental concerns onto the template of the old-school disaster movie for end-of-civilisation epics like The Day After Tomorrow and last year's 2012.The nuclear age once fuelled a similar climate of fear in cinema, but it's been a while since filmmakers invoked that spectre.
It will be interesting to see how our ongoing struggle with climate change, which can't be moved so easily to the back-burner, is reflected in the stories we tell on film. Even if carbon emissions were to be reduced to zero tomorrow, our need to contemplate our own extinction would still remain. For all their sobriety, the latest dystopian visions fill the same need within us as the cheesiest disaster movie, but with one important difference. When we see The Road, we can't discard the fears provoked by the film once the lights come up. Instead, we take them home with us and, if we're smart, act on them.

Plot Summary Universal Soldier:generation:
When terrorists threaten nuclear catastrophe, the world's only hope is to reactivate decommissioned Universal Soldier Luc Deveraux. Rearmed and reprogrammed, Deveraux must take on his nemesis from the original Universal Soldier and a next-generation "UniSol". Written by anonymous
With stolen top-secret technology, terrorists have created a next-generation Universal Soldier - an elite fighter genetically altered into a programmable killing machine. With this "UniSol" (Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski) leading the way, they seize the crippled Chernobyl nuclear reactor, threatening to unleash a lethal radioactive cloud. The only one who can stop them is Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a UniSol who's been decommissioned for years. Reactivated and retrained, Deveraux must make a full-out assault on the heavily armed fortress. But inside, he'll discover not one but two of these virtually indestructible warriors. Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren), Deveraux's vicious UniSol enemy from the original Universal Soldier, has been secretly reanimated and upgraded. Now, these elite fighters are locked, loaded and programmed to kill; and the fate of millions hinges on this high-action showdown. Written by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Universal Soldier: Regeneration Reviews;
So much of Universal Soldier: Regeneration takes place inside a dilapidated factory and the action consists so much more of kickfighting and mixed martial arts than the gunfire and explosions of the previous Universal Soldier films that they could have just as easily changed the genetically re-engineered zombie soldiers into androids and called it Cyborg: Regeneration.
Regeneration - more like the old generation if you ask me. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren are both back for this direct-to-DVD sequel to the 1992 Roland Emmerich original, and boy, do they look old. If you saw JCVD, then you already know how world weary Van Damme's face looks. Lundgren may be showing his age as well, but he still looks almost ten years younger than Van Damme despite being three years older. Van Damme already returned to the franchise once before in a 1999 sequel that effectively killed his big screen career for a decade, but for Lundgren to return, it really would have to be regeneration since the last we saw of his character were bits and pieces flying out of the hay harvester he got shredded in.
In the director's chair this time is the son of veteran filmmaker Peter Hyams, who, in addition to 2010 and The Relic, also directed Van Damme in Timecop and Sudden Death. John Hyams' most notable directorial work up to this point was the compelling 2002 mixed martial arts documentary The Smashing Machine about the rise and fall of ultimate fighter Mark Kerr. The younger Hyams could be the reason Universal Soldier: Regeneration boasts a heavy MMA influence.
Guerrilla fighters from a Russian breakaway republic have seized what remains of the Chernobyl nuclear plant and are holding the Russian President's two children hostage as they threaten to blast the concrete chamber encasing the reactor that famously melted down in 1986; doing so would let loose a radioactive cloud described as being "100 times that of Hiroshima". Their demand is the release of 110 captive political prisoners. I don't know about you, but I think if someone has kidnapped a world leader's kids and intends to unleash a nuclear holocaust unless his demands are met, the release of 100 imprisoned allies seems like small potatoes to me.
This is not lost on the rogue Universal Soldier scientist they've hired to hook them up with a UniSol for back-up firepower. Tension will boil over between the rebel leader and the scientist, who clearly dreams of one day commanding his own army of super soldiers to possibly conquer the world with, as to whether or not a more financially rewarding ransom should be issued. I really wish they had done more with this crazy nerdy scientist because his motivations were far more interesting than that of generic Russian nogoodnicks that cannot hit a target even at point-blank range.
That UniSol is played by former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski. You can count on a single hand the amount of dialogue Arlovski has. For the best, since he makes for a surprisingly imposing foe just silently annihilating adversaries, usually using what becomes in this film the trademark Universal Soldier finishing tactic: holding the opponent down on the ground with one hand while repeatedly punching their face until its a bloody pulp with the other. Arlovski is a new generation UniSol, or "NGU" for short. Allegedly an upgrade; I couldn't really tell the difference other than the NGU possessing a nifty retractable wristblade that the alien drug dealer from I Come in Peace would consider to die for.
After the first attempt to infiltrate the power plant by Russian-American coalition forces and four Universal Soldiers results in a bigger failure than Universal Soldier: The Return, the commanders decide the solution is to reactivate original UniSol Luc Deveraux (Van Damme). This makes little sense for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that we just watched the NGU single-handedly - literally in two instances - terminate the quartet of UniSols sent in with the commando raid, so what makes them think one lone Universal Soldier that is of the now obsolete first generation model stands a chance?
Luc Deveraux currently resides in Switzerland, where a brilliant psychologist is working to reintegrate him into society. Comparisons are made to his treatment being like retraining a fight dog to live as a house pet. I can only assume Universal Soldier: Regeneration has chosen to completely ignore the events of Universal Soldier: The Return (probably for best) because, as you may recall, it was explained that Luc Deveraux had somehow been cured of death, had completely readjusted to his new life, and even had a young daughter. That made no sense in that film, and what we are told here makes no sense in this film. Nor does it make any sense that being injected with a special serum is all it will take to instantly revert Deveraux back into his super soldier fighting shape and mindset.
The science of the Universal Soldier films has never made any sense, and here it's less than ever. None of it bothered me all that much because I have long since accepted that looking for plausibility in a Universal Soldier flick is as futile as trying to find a virgin in Michael Bay's hot tub. You just accept the illogic and hope the action delivers. It does.

Meticulously adapted from David Morrell’s novel FIRST BLOOD, which introduced the world to a young man named Rambo and his one-man war against a small town and its sheriff, FLOODING WITH LOVE FOR THE KID is in itself a one-man cinematic war. Shot entirely for $96 in a 220-square-foot studio apartment in Manhattan,
it was adapted, directed, filmed, acted, designed, and edited by one man. Actor and filmmaker Oberzan, performing all two dozen characters, created this monumental, transgressive experiment as a testament to the animal ingenuity and triumphant spirit of the lone artist equipped with no money, no resources, no nothing. A wild, violent, compassionate ride through the back hills and caves of Kentucky, the film and its maker embrace their harsh limitations, and in doing so, ultimately transcend them. As Rambo and Sheriff Teasle hunt each other in the woods, the audience is forced to redefine the very nature of ‘suspension of disbelief’. How and why this story is told is a statement far larger than any story itself.
This film asks the questions, “What do you need to make a good film? How much money? How many actors? How much space? Can you make a great narrative film with nothing but your love for the work?” An action-filled drama, it destroys all previous notions of low-budget filmmaking with a determination lifted from Rambo’s own furious rampage. --© Anthology Archives [More]
Armed with nothing but $96 and a consumer grade video camera - and confined to a 220-square-foot Manhattan studio apartment - actor/filmmaker Zachary Oberzan adapts David Morrell's novel First Blood in a one-man tour de force of space restricted, no-budget ingenuity.

SYNOPSIS:
The "44 Inch Chest" story unfolds when a jealous husband and his friends kidnap his wife's young lover, seeking retribution for his wounded ego. The film is a darkly funny and confrontational drama about a wronged man trying to rebuild his self-respect, aided only by a motley crew of his old friends.
Movie Review :
I saw this at the Sydney Film Festival, but IMDb has it as "in production", so I may have seen an incomplete version.) The pitch would have been something like "Reservoir Dogs meets Last Orders". From Reservoir Dogs we get the basic set-up of a bunch of crooks played by fine actors meeting in a lock-up and debating what to do with their captive, plus an enigmatic title and a flashback structure. From Last Orders comes a group of top-notch actors clearly enjoying themselves in a brown, downbeat London.
Some of the dialogue is fun if you like expletives spat out in poetry-like rhythms. There are good jokes and the acting is, as you'd expect from this lot, pretty fine. I was particularly pleased to see Stephen Dillane get his chance to prove himself cinematically after such an impressive theatrical career.
The downside is the plot, or rather the lack of it. The basic premise is laid out early on in the piece, and there is no real conflict to maintain our interest. Contrast the uniformity of opinion here with the combustible dynamics of Mr Blond, Mr White et al and the problem is clear. Some dream sequences intended to open the tale out feel forced, and a couple of minor twists are inconsequential.
if this script had been produced with a younger group of unknown actors it might get hailed for its promise. With this cast, 44 Inch Chest can only be counted a disappointment.
While agreeing with the first reviewer that the plot could be summarised in the two words "nothing happens", very much the same thing could be said of "Waiting for Godot" and half the plays of Pinter. Indeed the style of dialogue is very reminiscent of Pinter, with the five main characters each portraying an archetypical personality type.
The main point of the film is that the five characters are operating in a moral vacuum, and having to make their own decisions without influence from the law of the land or any other moral compass.
It would seem that the Law is simply non existent in their world - they kidnap into a van in broad daylight in front of many witnesses without disguising the number plate, and they finally let their victim go having inflicted on him an ordeal which would earn them each a long prison sentence with only the slightest word from John Hurt's character that they don't want to hear any more about it.
No, the whole point is that they, like the characters in Lord of the Flies, have to work it out for themselves.
And this freedom allows them the range to each demonstrate their character with the finest of English acting. Some of their characters are rather hackneyed, like Tom Wilkinson's who moves seamlessly from discussing with his mother about her favourite TV show into being a heartless thug, in a manner reminiscent of the second scene of Pulp Fiction, but the John Hurt character is beautifully drawn, by script writer, actor and director alike.
John Hurt plays an elderly man who clearly fancied himself as a ruthless thug in his younger days, and defines himself by his association with a psychopath gang leader. He is now treated with amused but slightly wary contempt by his friends, but is still determined to show his teeth by egging the Ray Winstone character into terrible and sadistic acts of revenge. The irony is that, in one of Winstone's psychotic daydreams, when given the opportunity to offer violence himself, his dentures fall out and he backs off, showing him for the toothless windbag he is.
The other major archetype is a louche gambler and homosexual predator played beautifully by Ian McShane. In a scene reminiscent of "The Dice Man" he agrees that life and death decisions are too hard for an individual to take, and accordingly persuades Ray Winstone that the decision between flaying alive and release should be taken on the toss of a coin.
The two main protagonists of the film are Ray Winstone, whose drink, shock and schizophrenia induced ramblings form the backbone of the script and Melvil Poupaud who never says a word and barely moves a muscle throughout the film. However, among a group of psychopaths, it is he, playing the kidnapped French waiter, who is the only one that the audience can relate to, and it is a tribute to Director Malcolm Venville that we know exactly what is going through his mind, despite his almost complete lack of expression.44 Inch Chest
This is a film about the struggle between revenge, blood lust and evil on the one hand and justice, decency and humanity on the other. It is about a man working through a psychosis and returning to rational thought. It is about how people can reach their own moral selves without influence from Church, Law or Society.
It is far from an action film, and if you want simple plot this is not the film for you, but it is a beautifully crafted set piece delivered by a very fine set of actors, performing a fine script and under subtle but powerful direction.

Plot Summary :
In this sometimes moving dark comedy, Broderick plays Ben-a failed children's folk singer and less-than-extraordinary weekend dad. Deeply cynical, Ben's sole pleasure in life is derived from chess games with his Senegalese roommate Ibou. When Ibou is suddenly struck ill and an insensitive municipal employee exacerbates the emergency situation, Ben's pessimistic worldview seems unequivocally confirmed. But when Ibou's sister Khadi takes his place in their apartment, what starts as an awkward living arrangement becomes something more, and Ben finds that cynicism may be all a matter of perspective.
Wonderful World Hollywood Movie Synopsis;:
Ben Singer (Matthew Broderick) is a failed children's folk singer, a career proofreader, a compulsive marijuana smoker, and a less-than-extraordinary weekend dad. He's also the most negative man alive. Floundering in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comfort comes from regular chess games and friendly debates on game theory with his Senegalese roommate Ibou. When Ibou is suddenly struck ill, and an insensitive municipal employee exacerbates the emergency situation, Ben's pessimistic worldview seems unequivocally confirmed. His only recourse is to pour his energies into a frivolous lawsuit against the city for depraved indifference. But Ben soon finds that cynicism may be all a matter of perspective.
Writer/director Josh Goldin increasingly calls into question Ben's misanthropy and carefully navigates the character's midlife melancholy as a possible product of his own mind. Goldin delicately balances both seriousness and levity, giving texture and depth to this offbeat and entertaining character study. Broderick brings the unlikable but undeniably savable Ben to life with the wry antics of his performance.
Wonderful World Hollywood Movie Reviews:
This is one of those quiet, well made movies that usually don't make any money. However, it makes you think. It makes you think about your life, what you have to be thankful for and how life's events dictate how you feel about yourself. This is a very well written, clever, idealistic script by Joshua Goldin. He also does a great job in directing it. I hope that this movie gets the opportunity for wide release sometime soon.
Matthew Broderick plays the title role and it's his best role in a very long time, probably since Election. He finally has an opportunity to explore a character and his transformation from pessimist to optimist is quite enjoyable as well as touching to witness. He is surrounded by a great supporting cast, Sanna Lathan, who is a beautiful and strong Sengalese woman he is touched by. Also, Jodelle Ferland, who has such terrific chemistry with Broderick that it's a such a joy to watch their scenes.
I tend to see the true story and plot, and very well, because you see, it is many people's story. Hey! it is, to a large extent, my story in parts.
Ben is like many of us - a washed-out entertainer who has developed a cynical view or life, and a jaded point of view with many issues. The fact that he loses his job, loses communication with his only daughter, is forced to deliver pizza, does not help the man's character, but embitters it. I can relate to that. Like Ben, I am a thinker, who does not believe in taking things lying down. I would have gone all the way like he did when the city tow truck towed his car just when his dear Senegalese friend Ibou relapsed into diabetic shock and needed to get to a hospital.
But then, when Ibou's sister Khadi came from Senegal to help take care of him, changes sparked in Ben, slowly at first, almost imperceptible, then more and more pronounced. How could you not fall in love with the curvy Khadi, with her beautiful raw African features, her womanly confidence and her vision of "magic"? No pretentiousness here, no overbearing or meddling - quite the contrary. You tend to admire the inner strength of such women, so akin to their culture and ways of life. I once met a woman like that from Nigeria, whose brother worked as an Engineer in the local Shell corp. The way she moved, her similar dress and grooming, made me look twice and say: "Now THAT is a woman!" Sadly, as in Ben's case, yes, such a relationship is fraught with difficulties, chiefly because of the distance between 2 Worlds. She was uncomfortable in our 'civilized' World, and Ben would not be able to adapt well in hers. Besides, he wanted to resurrect his singing career, and Senegal would not have been the right place, maybe. That too was my case with the girl in question.. However, by then Ben understood 2 things - one of them being that he was a good man, a man without racial prejudice, open, simple and unpretentious. Such men are hard to come by these days. The second thing he realized I will not say. I will leave you to view the movie, and come to your own conclusions.
So it's not the stomping, heart-throbbing drama like you see in other movies, but it will keep you interested and thinking all the way, and that, my friends, is basically what a good story is all about. Fine acting, plausible story, so true to real life. Well worth the 10 points!

Crazy on the Outside Plot Summary:
Tommy (Tim Allen) is fresh out of prison and ready for a second chance in life. Enter his loving sister Viki (Sigourney Weaver), her cynical husband Ed (J.K. Simmons) and their family. Tommy moves in with them, and when it comes to explaining to Grandma Tommy’s whereabouts for the last three years, the truth-challenged Viki has the answer: “He’s been in France!”
With Grandma now speaking only French to Tommy and sporting a beret, Tommy is determined to flee Viki’s house and complete the two missions closest to his heart: One, to revive his late father’s business and two, to re-connect with his old flame Christy (Julie Bowen). Tragically Christy died in an accident. Or so says sister Viki.
Reporting to his by-the-book probation officer Angela (Jeanne Tripplehorn) Tommy lands a temporary job in a popular fast-food chain, Pirate Burger, where not only is he forced to dress like up like something resembling Captain Hook’s younger brother, but he catches a fleeting glimpse of a beautiful departing customer who looks exactly like – Christy!
“Pirate” Tommy chases the woman down to discover that, indeed, it is Christy, very much alive – and engaged to be married. But that doesn’t stop her from throwing herself into Tommy’s arms, until their blissful reunion is interrupted by Christy’s current fiancée, Frank an electronic store magnate.
Viki strikes again! But she only lied to her brother about Christy’s demise to protect him from the news of Christy’s nuptials. But who can protect him from his old “friend” Gray (Ray Liotta) whose video piracy operation is the reason Tommy went to jail in the first place. Gray is back on the move and trying to lure Tommy into a new scheme – and Gray isn’t somebody who takes no for an answer. And while Tommy would like nothing more than to come clean to probation officer Angela, the last thing he wants to do is raise her suspicions – especially since he might be falling in love with her.
With time running out and Gray’s get rich scheme advancing forward, Tommy finds himself caught between Viki who will use anything from her vast repertoire of exaggerations to save her brother, and Angela the woman he loves who also happens to enforce the law. Add to this the rest of Tommy’s adoring family that is as supportive of him as they are blind to the facts and Tommy will discover that the only way to win is to be true to what’s inside you, especially when it’s…Crazy on the Outside.

Synospis Bitch Slap Movie 2010:
"Bitch Slap" follows three bad girls (a down-and-out stripper, a drug-running killer and a corporate powerbroker) as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort and steal $200 Million in diamonds from a ruthless underworld kingpin. Things quickly spin out of control as allegiances change, truths are revealed, other criminals arrive for the score, the fate of the world hangs in the balance and they are forced to confront a villain much worse than they ever expected -- themselves. It's the ultimate morality tale as, one by one, they realize the whole she-bang was a set-up and one of them may not even be human.
Plot Summary:

Samson And Delilah Australians Movie Review :
Samson and Delilah is a film that all Australians should see. It is confronting and disturbing: poverty, unemployment, petrol sniffing, violence, clashes within aboriginal communities and with so-called mainstream society. Nevertheless in keeping with the optimism of its writer/director Warwick Thornton, it offers some hope.
Warwick Thornton told Real Time magazine that:
"I'm one of the biggest romantics in the world and, from day one, these two kids had to live. That was the most important thing. It would have been quite easy for them to die and that's just wrong, that is so wrong. I couldn't live with myself as a writer. I need them to live for me as a human being, to feel stronger."
This is a very personal story about teenage love, more Romeo and Juliet if anything. The one bit of good fortune they have is that they are the right skins for marriage. The hair-cutting connection to the biblical story of Samson and Delilah is based in an ancient aboriginal custom.
Their courtship and bonding are unique, as Samson doesn't speak. Traditional communication such as sign and body language are a necessity.
This drama cannot be divorced from its social and political context. The seeming hopelessness and helplessness of remote aboriginal communities like this one screams out for not just understanding but some way forward. Some will not be happy with the solution presented here as it involves traditional homelands, demonised by some Australian commentators as "cultural museums" that offer little positive for the future.
Samson lives out the despair of many young men caught in this cultural chaos. Their lives revolve around western music and fading attempts to maintain traditional connections to land and family. Chronic boredom and lack of purpose exacerbate the aimlessness.
Delilah spends her time supporting the only functioning member of her family who is around, her Nana (Mitjili Napanangka Gibson). When the inevitable happens the pay back aunts follow ritual in punishing her but offer little other help to this 14 year old.
Their escape to Alice Springs reflects the everyday life of many aborigines who have looked to towns for some solution. We see the exploitation of indigenous artists, local hostility to the homeless, the massive gulf between tourists and the people they have come to see. Gonzo, played by Warwick's brother Scott Thornton, is a riverbed refugee who finds solace in cask wine and his own songs. He is their sole support in Alice. When he looks to religion for his salvation, they do not follow this well-trodden path.
Thornton brings out the best in his inexperienced cast. The performances of relative newcomers such Marissa Gibson Rowan MacNamara are remarkable. They handle the tragic and comic moments with equal ease. The trailer for Australian director Warwick Thornton's debut feature film, 'Samson & Delilah'

Triangle English Movie Plot :
When Jess sets sail on a yacht with a group of friends, she cannot shake the feeling that there is something wrong. Her suspicions are realized when the yacht hits a storm and the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety, a ship Jess is convinced she's been on before. The ship appears deserted, the clock on board has stopped, but they are not alone... Someone is intent on hunting them down, one by one. And Jess unknowingly holds the key to end the terror.
Triangle English Film Review :
I just came back from the world premiere at FrightFest in London, it was the festival opener as well so expectations were high and it didn't disappoint! Much better than Creep and Severance, this isChristopher Smith 's most ambitious film. A mind-bending story that is as puzzling as it is original, Triangle is more a mystery than a horror movie in my opinion. Gorehounds will be sorely disappointed. This is more about a situation which becomes more and more surreal, almost dream-like, I thought during the film that I've had similar nightmares as a kid... nightmares going around in circles and getting more and more frightening because I knew when or how the monster would inevitably come back...
The plot (no spoilers): after their yacht is overturned during a freak storm, a group of friends are desperate for help. A cruise ship suddenly appears and they see a figure looking down at them from the bridge for a few seconds. They climb on board but there is no crew, no passengers, nothing. Saying anything more would be ruining the movie, so I'll stop here.
Christopher Smith’s “Triangle” is a clever, tightly plotted supernatural thriller that, towards the end, actually feels more like a slimmer, more condensed version of a Paul Thomas Anderson drama than the third feature-length film from the guy who gave us “Creep” and “Severance”. The film is not nearly as gory as those other two, but it certainly packs more emotional punch and requires more of an investment in the old noggin to get through. Although yes, if you missed anything the first time around, you will benefit from a second or even third viewing, but to be honest with you, I’m not sure if you’ll want to take that plunge because, well, “Triangle” isn’t exactly the kind of film that lends itself to repeat viewing from an entertainment standpoint. One trip was certainly more than enough for me, and I suspect it’ll be the same for most of you out there.
Melissa George stars as Jess, your average, pretty waitress and single mom to an autistic son. As the film opens, Jess is getting ready for her first real “me time” with the handsome Greg (Michael Dorman) on his yacht. Coming along are Greg’s childhood friends Sally (Rachael Carpani) and Downey (Henry Nixon), who have brought a third wheel, Heather (Emma Lung) in hopes of hooking her up with their buddy, unaware that Greg only has eyes for Jess. Also along for the ride is Greg’s second-in-command, Victor (Liam Hemsworth). The trip is initially uneventful, but soon a mysterious storm appears out of nowhere, upturns the yacht, kills Heather, and leaves the rest adrift. Luckily for the survivors, an ocean liner passes by, but as soon as they board the massive vessel, they realize something is amiss – the ship appears to be utterly deserted, and soon, Jess is getting feelings of déjà vu. To make matters worse, a masked killer begins stalking them with a shotgun.
As you can probably guess by the title and premise, Smith’s “Triangle” plays on the existence of the Bermuda Triangle, even if the film never actually mentions that infamous stretch of ocean just off the coast of Florida by name, or indeed ever alludes to its existence at all within the movie. But since the Triangle does in fact exist, and weird things have been reported to have happened within it, “Triangle” has a built-in logic (of sorts) that it never really has to explain, even if it cared to try, which it simply has no interest in doing. This actually works well for the movie as it steam-rolls head-first into its mystery in the First Act, and by the 30-minute mark Melissa George is running from the shotgun-wielding killer. The film gets progressively more complicated and the plot more twisted as things begin to unravel and Jess begins to realize what is happening to her. To say more about “Triangle” would be to give away too much, so I’ll stop right there.
The film hinges on Melissa George, whose character is onscreen almost the entire time. The “30 Days of Night” actress shows plenty of range, turning in an affecting, strong performance as our Final Girl. The film’s final Third Act, in particular, is all about George, and she’s more than up to the task. Smith, who also wrote the script, is careful not to reveal too much about Jess’s home life, and as the film opens, we only get snippets of her life with son Tommy. As Jess eventually joins the others on their yacht cruise, we can’t help but wonder if something has happened to Jess and her son, or indeed, if the boy is actually “in school” as she tells Victor. As events unfold, we begin to believe that a mighty weight hangs on our leading lady’s shoulders, reflected in what at first comes across as an unhinged personality, but quickly turns into quiet, determined desperation, the reasons for which we (and she) don’t realize until it’s much too late.
The rest of the supporting cast does fine, including Liam Hemsworth, brother of the future Thor and Australia’s next greatest and latest import, Chris Hemsworth. The younger Hemsworth doesn’t have much to do here, but then again, neither does anyone else in the cast except for Michael Dorman as the would-be love interest. As for gore, there is some, including an “out of the blue” sorta-kill scene that will leave plenty of viewers squeamish. “Triangle” isn’t really about gore, and the violence is tempered and kept mainly in the middle section, when the masked killer strikes. In that regard, the film is certainly more “adult” than Smith’s previous works, which will either disappoint you if you were looking for more of the same from him, or please you if you were looking for growth in the director.
Overall, I enjoyed “Triangle”, and found it to be a clever, captivating film with a lot of good ideas and very sound execution by Christopher Smith. Melissa George turns in a pitch-perfect performance, and as cliché as it sounds, the film’s unfolding mystery should keep viewers at the edge of their seats waiting to find out what happens next, trying to figure out what’s already happened, and dreading what will happen. The film has that mind screw quality about it that makes it a satisfying watch, even if the final reel is all downer material. You’re not going to leave “Triangle” wanting to come back for another round anytime soon, but you will leave feeling as if you’ve just been treated to a well thought out, acted, executed, and ultimately, smart supernatural horror movie.
After the movie ended in a round of applause, Christopher Smith said that it took him 2 years to write the script, and in the end it's not surprising as this is a very complex plot and to make all the pieces fall into place must have been a daunting task! Good acting by Melissa George and the rest of the cast, but her haunting performance takes center stage very quickly as the movie goes on a WTF / Twilight Zone-ish mode.
