One in Four College Women Will Be Raped Before They Graduate, According to Justice Department Study
As college students gear up once again to taste the sweet freedom of the college campus, there's one thing they're not likely not focusing on: the probability that one out of four female college students will be raped before receiving a diploma.
Victims speak out against unprocessed rape kits throughout the country.
A recent study from the Department of Justice estimated that 25 percent of college women will be victims of rape or attempted rape before they graduate within a four-year college period, and that women between the ages of 16 to 24 will experience rape at a rate that's four times higher than the assault rate of all women.
Such was seemingly the case of Megan Wright, a 19-year-old from New Jersey. Wright was wrapping up her freshman year in May 2006 at Dominican College, a small Catholic school in Orangeburg, N.Y., about an hour away from New York City, when she was allegedly gang raped on its campus. She committed suicide before the year ended.
Her mother, Cindy McGrath, is suing Dominican, claiming that the college failed to conduct a proper investigation into her daughter's assault, and thereby violated Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which guarantees equal access to education.
The lawsuit also alleges that Dominican violated the law by not accurately disclosing the number of sexual assaults reported on its campus.
Attorney Gloria Allred, who has represented parties in several high-profile discrimination cases, is representing McGrath.
"A victim who reports a sexual assault to a college, which is receiving federal funds, has a right to expect, under the law, that that college will conduct a fair, thorough investigation," Allred said. "We take very seriously a college's duty, and we want it enforced, and when they violate it there are real consequences."
The Center for Public Integrity conducted a 12-month probe into sexual assault on college campuses that was completed earlier this year.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Two of Michael Jackson's children have begun attending school for the first time after years of getting lessons at home from private tutors, celebrity website TMZ.com said on Friday.
Prince Michael, 13, and Paris Jackson, 12, had their first day on Wednesday at an exclusive private school in Los Angeles whose former students include the likes of Paris Hilton, former "Friends" actor Matthew Perry and singer Natalie Cole, TMZ reported, citing unidentified sources.
Jackson's youngest son, the eight-year-old known as Blanket, will continue to be home-schooled for the time being.
The singer's mother Katherine, who has custody of her three grand-children, said in a June interview that she planned to send the once-sheltered children to school this fall. The impetus is said to have come from Prince, who wanted a more social experience growing up.
Jackson, who died suddenly in June 2009, had kept his children secluded from outsiders, often having them wear veils when out in public.
Fees for The Buckley School in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles range from $25,000 to $29,000 a year, according to the school's website.

The Prince of Wales and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will be guests in the first week of new ITV morning show Daybreak, producers have revealed.
Hosts Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley will speak to Mr Blair on Monday in his first live UK interview since his memoirs were published.
On Friday, they will speak to Prince Charles about Start, his new sustainable living initiative.
Daybreak replaces GMTV which ended on Friday after more than 17 years.
Speaking at the Daybreak launch last week, Chiles said he and Bleakley were "gutted" over the way they left BBC One's evening magazine programme The One Show.
Chiles announced his departure in April because of BBC plans for Chris Evans to take his place on the weekday show on Fridays.
"We were both very happy to stay," Chiles said.
"Nothing needed to change - but obviously change was suggested on The One Show I couldn't live with and that's why I left."

Former England captain Michael Atherton feels young Pakistan pacer Mohammad Aamer was in the 'the grip of evil' and should be given a chance.
Cricketer-turned-journalist Atherton said he hopes to see the 18-year-old Aamer getting a fresh chance to mend his ways.
"Nasser Hussain, who I once saw walking around the team hotel in Sri Lanka in the early hours of the morning before a Test match unable to sleep, so worried was he about his form, spoke for us all when he said, 'Please don't let it be the kid'," Atherton wrote in 'The News of the World'.
"The 'kid' in question was Mohammad Aamer, the young, good looking and prodigiously talented Pakistan bowler who had blown England away on the second morning at Lord's with a mesmeric spell of left-arm fast bowling and who now, we had been told, had overstepped the front line twice for a few dollars more," he added.
Atherton, however, said underperforming for money is worse than even failing a dope test.
"It is worse than doping, because the fixer is deliberately trying to under-perform, so deceiving the paying public."
The former batsman said though he hopes to see lenient treatment for Aamer, the ICC is "unlikely to show any clemency now".
"This is not necessarily arbitrary or unfair; simply a realisation that there are mitigating circumstances for an 18-year old...It would be grossly unfair to ban a kid for life for overstepping the line twice.

Jerusalem, Sep 6: Achieving a major milestone in the mankind's fight against the dreaded AIDS, scientists have developed a method that can wipe out HIV infected cells.
Israeli scientists have figured out a way to wipe out all the HIV infected cells without affecting the healthy ones, a medical journal said.
According to the latest edition of the British journal AIDS Research and Therapy, although the researchers have registered an Israeli patent, the treatment must still go through trials on animals and humans, which means that it would be a while before it is available to the public.
As to how the method would work, the journal said that peptides, unique short protein segments developed by the researchers, can interfere with replication and at the same time overwhelm the infected cell, triggering its self-destruction.
"It is our view that the results described in this work suggest a novel approach to specifically promote death of HIV-1 infected cells and thus may eventually be developed into a new and general anti-viral therapy," the researchers are quoted as saying in the journal.
"The usual medications kill the virus that has entered the body during infection and the (peptide) treatment allows cells infected with the genetic load of the virus to be killed," they added.

Actor Karthi has now leapt towards the A-League of actors with his 4-consecutive blockbusters. Starting his journey with ‘Paruthiveeran’, his long sabbatical gap was followed by hat-tricks in 2010 that includes: ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, ‘Paiyaa’ and recent release ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’. His next film ‘Siruthai’, a remake of yesteryear Telugu blockbuster ‘Vikramarkudu’ is rolling fast on floors. According to the closer sources, the film’s shooting has been 60% completed.
The film is about a petty thief (Karthi) along with his sidekick (Santhanam) involved in conniving acts. The thief somehow manages to woo down a gorgeous girl (Thamannah Bhatia) and they decide to get married. But a sudden twist tale throws a heavy blow on him as a small girl claims him to be her daddy. Unable to deal with the situation, he starts unraveling the mystery involved and finds that she is the daughter of a police inspector (again played by Karthi). What unfolds next is a series of events that lets the thief to settle scores for the sake of police officer.
The film is directed by debutant Siva, once an associate of director Bala and is produced by K.E. Gnyanavel Raja of Studio Green Productions.

Perhaps, Ranbir Kapoor is trying to chew more than he can eat, it is reported that he wants to direct a movie that will star his actor parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu. Rishi tells that his boy wants to repeat history as his father Raj Kapoor did by directing his father Prithvi Raj Kapoor.
Meanwhile, Ranbir’s idea was liked by Rishi, but mom Neetu is a bit adamant and she says that she has not acted for the past 30 years, so she wouldn’t prefer to act this time.
He adds, “Why me and Ranbir together? It has to be Neetu as well. Since my father Raj Kapoor directed his father Prithviraj Kapoor and him, Ranbir too wants to do the same.”
Ranbir’s idea is still in the pipeline and it seems it would take time to materialize as he is busy in shooting for his movie ‘Anjaana-Anjaani’ presently and several other projects are lined up for him.
But, the duo of Rishi and Neetu will be seen in first time director Habib Faizal’s ‘Do Dooni Chal’. Initially Rishi declined the director’s offer and told to take his son Ranbir instead.
Rishi adds, “When I suggested to Habib that he take Ranbir as the hero in his film, he said, ‘My protagonist is 54. Does Ranbir look that old to you?’ On second thought, I agreed to play the role.”

According to an insider source, Mallika has recorded her voice singing on two different songs. The first of the songs is composed and arranged by Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon from the iconic rock band The Beatles. Upon mixing of the track, the song will be sent to Mr. Lennon for approval. The second track recorded is arranged by German composer Alexander Von Bubenheim, who provided the background score for HISSS. Both songs have Mallika singing in a breathy, sexy style reminiscent of famed French actress Brigitte Bardot’s legendary collaborations with musician Serge Gainsbourg.

Vijay’s 51st film Kaavalan is fast on the heels of completion as the producers are planning to release the film for Diwali. Prithviraj's film Anwar releasing on Oct 15 Monday, September 6, 2010, 17:47 [IST]
Malayalam movie Anwar starring Prithviraj and Prakash Raj has finally finalised its release date on October 15. Malayalam actress and playback singer Mamta Mohandas is the heroine of this movie written and directed by Amal Neerad.
Earlier, the makers planned to release the movie in July but then it was rescheduled for Ramzan release. The release date has been postponed again for a week by the producers Red Carpets, since the production work of the film is not complete.
The story of the movie deals with terrorism and the protagonist is reportedly a terrorist. He appoints people from Kerala, gives them training to use arms and ammunition and they are later used as suicide bombers. Prithviraj will be playing the title role and Prakash Raj is playing an important role as well. Another Malayalam actor Lal is also an important part of the movie.
In January 2010, the official website for Anwar was launched. The shooting for the movie started in March 2010 and the main location was in Kochi.

FICUS acquires Endhiran's USA rights Monday, September 6, 2010, 10:08 [IST]
According to latest reports, FICUS the leader in overseas distribution of Indian films has bagged the USA theatrical rights of Endhiran. The reports suggest that FICUS has won the rights for both the Tamil and Telugu versions of the Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Bachchan starrer film.
A FICUS representative thanked Sun pictures for giving them the opportunity and also extended their gratitude to Kalanidhi Maran and Hansraj Saxena. The movie is said to be the highest ever budget film in Indian film industry.
The technical crew of Endhiran was hand-picked by Shankar himself and it includes technicians from all over the world. Oscar winner AR Rahman, Hollywood stunt director Yuen Woo Ping (who designed action scenes for Matrix and other biggest action flicks) have worked for this science fiction film.

Fincher insisted that this version’s story will still be set in Sweden and he even wanted his actors to practice Swedish accent. Although Sony is hoping Fincher will stick around to adapt all three books, Fincher said there’s no actual plan to necessarily continue past TATTOO at this point, because he’s just focusing on making this one movie that people would want to see the sequel to, nor there are plans to shoot all three films back-to-back, the movie is expected to be R-rated.

Reliance BIG Pictures, together with IM Global, the international sales company that Reliance acquired only last week, will finance DNA’s $45 Million 3D production of DREDD, the adaptation of the iconic 2000 AD comic-book character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Filming will take place over the fourth quarter of 2010 in Johannesburg.
DREDD in 3D script was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) Pete Travis, director of Omagh, Vantage Point, and Endgame will direct. Wagner will be a creative consultant on the film.
Todd Phillips Wants A ‘Renegade’ JOHN BELUSHI Biopic Posted On September - 4 - 2010
As much as I’m looking forward to the new biopic of John Belushi, produced by Todd Phillips (The Hangover), I can’t help but wonder how on earth are Phillips and the gang going to make Belushi relevant? Unless the film had Belushi with vampire fangs or say a few magic spells or have superpower, most kids today won’t even know who this legend was, they’d go ‘John who?’, either that or they’d mistake him for his brother Jim. Steven Conrad (The Pursuit Of Happyness) is developing the script and though it’s not confirmed whether or not Phillips would direct, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’d say yes, in a recent chat with MTV, Phillips explained their approach..
“Our goal is not to do a traditional biopic approach with it that people expect, whether you’re talking about ‘Walk the Line’ or ‘Ray.’ All good movies, but our goal is not to make that typical biopic. We want to make a movie that, if John Belushi saw it, he would be happy that it captured his spirit. Sometimes I feel that they don’t entirely capture the spirit of the person they’re about. Our goal is to capture the spirit of Belushi, not necessarily make a straight-ahead biopic.” “Steve Conrad, who’s a f–king brilliant writer, is working on a story for it.” “It could mean that. There are a lot of ways to interpret it. One of the reasons I’m being a bit vague is because we haven’t nailed it yet. It’s in early stages. I’m really talking about the very television-narrative approach that a lot of biopics take. We don’t want to do that. We’re trying to take a very renegade approach to who I think was one of the most renegade comedy actors of all time.”
Good.. we could use unconventional biopic especially for one like John Belushi. Not just storytelling-wise but also visually, If Phillips wants to make this into something that Belushi would like if he were alive today, then it should focus more on the laughs and not so much on his struggle with his demons a.k.a addiction. It could be his life depicted through a series of SNL type-sketches.. or they could single out maybe a few years of his life, his rise to power and then end the movie on a high note and leave the rest in the end credit notes. The million dollar question of course… which actor working in Hollywood today is worthy enough to play the man of the hour?..

Movie Superman Returns Review: David Lee is quite possibly the nerdiest comic geek friend I know and I mean that in a cool way. He previously shared with us his review of Despicable Me, here at Rama’s SCREEN. Dave and I and another good friend named Lori, had a discussion other day about 2006′s Bryan Singer-directed SUPERMAN RETURNS starring Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I’ve mentioned to all of you before that some of the reasons why I didn’t enjoy the movie were that it didn’t have enough action,.. as iconic as the character Lex Luthor is, in that film he just didn’t seem like a formidable foe,.. and I wasn’t too fond of the whole idea of making Superman seem like Jesus or the savior of men instead of the good ol’ hero who fights for truth, justice and the American way. So I invited Dave to share his thoughts again with all of you. So think of this as a.. look back. After this jump..
Hi kids and welcome back to the second edition of Miscellaneous Ramblings And Rants From The Comic Vault. Like before, my name’s Dave and before you read any further, a couple disclaimers are in order:
1: There’s gonna be a lot of spoilers in this review, so if you haven’t seen this movie? Don’t read anymore. See that shiny red X button on the upper right? Yeah..make with the clicky clicky right about now. Come back when you’ve seen the movie.
2: As you’ve all no doubt seen by now, I’m something of a wiseass. As such, this review will be laden with sarcasm and strong language. But don’t worry, I promise to keep it as tame as I can, given my usual.
Now that the disclaimers and introduction’s are out of the way, onto the review!
This edition’s review is going to be on one of my guilty pleasure favorites: Superman Returns. Oh, Clark Kent. We all love your bumbling ass, but you can’t ever seem to bumble your Krypto-ass onto our silver screens due to one mishap or another. To understand Superman Returns, we gotta step back in time enough to actually see how this movie came to be. EVERYONE IN THE WONKA MACHINE. LORI GET OFF MY FOOT DAMMIT. Anyways. After the dismal Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (What a goddamn WASTE that was. Super telekinetics? Did Jor-El bang Jean Grey when I wasn’t looking or something? So lame.) , the Man of Steel sat on the sidelines for quite some time. IV was released in 1987, and SR wasn’t released until 2006. Interesting bit of trivia for you all: At the end of IV, Superman looks at Lex Luthor and says “See you in twenty, Luthor.” It wouldn’t be for another 20 years that Superman and Luthor would see each other on the big screen. Prophetic, no? To give you kids a brief idea of how long that is, in that 20 year time span we saw Batman receive 5 big screen releases, only 2 of them being worth a good goddamn. X-Men got 2 (Which will be the focus of another rant, believe you me.) and even the Fantastic Four got 1! What the goddamn Hell is wrong with you, Hollywood?! What the Hell is going on down there? Why, that’s one Hell of a question! For a while, several big name directors such as McG, Brett Ratner, and even Tim Burton got their hands on the Superman property..and every single one of them ballsed it off. Kevin Smith wrote a script that had Superman wearing an all black suit because he felt that Superman’s normal togs were “too faggy”..that’s right. Oh, and he wanted Superman to fight a giant spider in the third act. Yeah, because a giant SPIDER is what we wanna see? Thank god Smith smarted up.
When Burton got a hold of the project, he dropped Smith’s script and hired his people to do it. Thank god for that. Burton almost made the movie. In fact, he was so far into pre-production that teaser posters of his movie, entitled “Superman Lives!” were made and displayed at the American Toy Fair. But thank god for all of us, the movie was shitcanned. Alright. Everyone outta the Wonka. We’re back in 2010, and now we can talk about the movie now that we know the history. Bryan Singer finally got attached to the movie, and filming got started in March 2005. As you guys know, Singer was responsible for X-Men 1 and 2, which weren’t the worst super-hero movies in the world. He actually abandoned X-Men 3 and Logan’s Run for Superman Returns. I don’t know whether I want to punch him in the jaw or kiss him for abandoning X-Men 3 to take up Superman Returns. WHY DID YOU LET RATNER HAVE IT, SINGER. WRRRRRYYYYYY?!!?!! WHY DID YOU DOOM US LIKE THAT?! Ahem. My bad. Moving on. Singer had one of the biggest hurdles in Hollywood right off the bat: Casting Clark Kent AKA Superman. We’ve had people such as Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Dean Cain, Tom Welling and the quintessential Superman himself: Christopher Reeve play the role of the Man of Steel. Now before I discuss who Singer chose, let me say this: I am a STAUNCH fan of Chris Reeve. That man made me believe that a man could fly, and everytime I saw him, wheelchair or not, I wanted to hug him and ask him to take me to the Fortress of Solitude. He WAS Superman.
Enter Brandon Routh. A die-hard Superman fan himself, Routh got the job after bumbling and knocking over a cup of hot coffee during the initial meeting with Singer on accident. Like everyone, I was like “Fuck’im. I want Reeve.” But Routh did what Hugh Jackman did for Wolverine and he blew our minds. Not only did he put on 20 pounds of muscle for this movie, he also embodied Clark Kent to the point of creepiness. Go and look at a picture of Routh and Reeve next to each other. THEY GODDAMN LOOK ALIKE! Once I saw the initial footage, I was sold. Kevin Spacey was another knock out of the park when it came to his hiring for Lex Luthor. Another trivia: In 1977 during the filming of Superman, Gene Hackman refused to shave his head for the role. He wore a bald cap, which you can see. Kevin Spacey willingly shaved his head bald for the role. Like the Routh and Reeve connection, Spacey was the embodiment of Hackman as Luthor. They look alike just the same..but that’s where it ends. Sit down, Hackman…Spacey IS Luthor. Hell, during the filming of the movie Spacey would drive round in a custom golf cart with a Superman doll being dragged behind it as he yelled on a megaphone that “SUPERMAN MUST DIE.” That’s dedication. Sam Huntington, Frank Langella (SKELETOR UP IN THIS MOTHERFUCKER!! ), and Kate Bosworth rounded out the cast as Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and Lois Lane respectively. The first two did good. Bosworth sucked, and I’ll leave it at that. The less said, the better.
And last but not least, I’m going to discuss the suit. Yes, the suit. As we all know, Superman has a signature costume. Bright blues, reds and yellows. You can’t miss this thing if you tried! Well, in this movie, they changed it a bit. Gone is the bright yellows and reds, in exchange for a darker tone. The yellow s-shield is gone from the back of the cape. It’s now on his belt buckle. Stupid idea. What, did they put that on the belt buckle for the ladies who’re gonna check out his bulge instead of his chest? It screams “I’m super from the waist down too, ladies. Hubba!” Also redundant. Another change was the S-Shield on his chest. In the comics and original movie, the shield was large and a part of the cloth itself. This shield is ICONIC. I grew up with the shield, for god’s sake. For the movie, they decreased the size of the shield, as well as making small changes to its design. It’s also a raised chestplate itself. At first, I was throwing crap and going “NO. NO. FUCK THAT.” But then I got to thinking about it..and it’s not that bad. I don’t like the darker reds, but hey. Fun bit of trivia: The shield is comprised of very small S-Shields, and the bottoms of his boots are treaded with several small S-Shields as well. SUPER-BOOTPRINT GO!
And now, the plot. Oh man…this plot has caught some Hell, some from yours truly as well. Singer has gone on record as saying that Superman Returns takes place after the first two movies, but only certain aspects. It also ignores 3 and 4, thank god. I’ll go ahead and get it out of the way right now: I HATE the kid. Jason White, aka The Drowned Sewer Rat That Hung Out With The TMNT. Tristan Leabu did a good job in playing the rat, but for fucks sake. Really? Congratulations, Singer. You’ve taken the symbol of the DC Universe and turned him into Super Deadbeat Dad. How in the HELL is Superman supposed to raise this rat when he’s off kicking the everloving crap out of Darkseid, Luthor and Metallo? Oh that’s right…HE CAN’T. DEADBEAT DAD. That entire subplot was a major misstep in the movie, and it crippled it for me in a big way. I didn’t even mind James Marsden as Richard White. I thought his role was pretty cool, actually. I read somewhere that Marsden would like to come back to reprise the role of White as a villain. I dig. So the main plot goes that Big Blue has been gone for 5 years because apparently Luthor fooled the entire world into thinking that Krypton was still there. Nevermind that these shards of radioactive rock have been used against him all these years, and nevermind the fact that his own DAD said that Krypton was trashed…oh no. It somehow gets found, and Supes is on the go suddenly to go see it. And in the words of the internet..”SURPRISE! RICKROLLED!”…it’s not there. Everyone say it with me…DUUUUH. Though if a giant jumbotron screen of Rick Astley rickrolling Supes at the Krypto- Gravesite was shown, I woulda fallen out laughing. That woulda been funny and you know it. 5 years pass, and the entire world moves on without Superman. Lois Lane writes an angry editorial which to me, seemed a lot like trolling, Luthor ends up getting freed on a law technicality, and that’s that. Superman ends up coming back and he sees what the world has come to. Cue righteous anger here, which I can’t blame him. This man’s showed the world what they can be if they just try. He goes away and what do they do? Blow each other the fuck up. Yeah, real smart. At first, Clark’s kinda hesitant. Does he want to put the suit back on? Can he handle the stress and constant demand? All of these thoughts plague him as he goes back to Metropolis to resume his life. And no, these little points weren’t in the movie. They were in the novel, which was a fantastic read. It makes the movie make so much more sense.
So things go on, and the experimental spacecraft Genesis is in danger. THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR SUPERMAN! In a scene that was pulled nearly right from the Superman animated series pilot, Superman saves the jet. I marked out like crazy when I saw this scene and when it came to an end..I was just like the people in the stadium: Cheering like a mofo. Superman’s back, baby! But like always, there’s something wrong. Luthor’s up to his no good schemes and OFF WE GO! Personally, I didn’t much like Kitty Kowalski. She served as a semi-decent foil for Luthor, but meh. I just wasn’t feeling her. The henchmen were all pretty funny, including the dude with the eyes in the back of his head. I got a giggle out of that. Luthor figures out that if he jacks some crystals from Superman’s home that he can make his own continent (nice nod to the 78 movie, Singer! Kudos!), and off they go too. The movie progresses on and on, with some occasional drama where Superman plays Super-Spy in a decidedly creeper part of the movie. WTF, Clark. CREEEEEPER. The climax of the movie hits when Luthor reveals his big scheme that he’s going to wipe out the entire USA and charge out the ear for his own continent. We also learn that everytime Luthor goes to make a landmass, it sets off a temporary EMP that messes things all up. Can you imagine being the guy who was watching porn when the EMP went off? “HEY I WAS ALMOST DONE, MAN!” Superman saves the day, and ends up dying in a very questionable ending over all. Credits roll, thanks for coming out.

Okay, so now that we have that out of the way, here’s my thoughts. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. There were several nods and quirks to the original movies, but there were several points I could’ve done without: DROWNED RAT GO AWAY and Super-Creeper. Those kinda put me off. Another thing that was brought to my attention by our esteemed owner of the site Rama…there were some serious Jesus comparisons. Jesus/Superman is given to us as the only son, dies for our sins, comes back to save the day in the end. I can agree with this to an extent. The similarities are there in a big way. But when you look at it, it’s like that in the comic too. Only difference is that it’s not really touched on and shown nearly as much due to over 60+ years of comic canon. It all falls back down to how much you’re gonna look into that. I really did enjoy the brief actions scenes we did see: The airplane sequence and the mad flight through Metropolis to save the entire city on his way to the island. Those were AMAZING, and showed that Routh had his chops as the Man of Steel. What sucked is the fact that we didn’t get to see Superman really cutting loose against a big nasty baddie. C’mon..think about it. A titanic smackdown between Superman and say…Metallo? That would’ve been great! Maybe in the new movie.
Overall, I recommend seeing this movie..but make sure when you do, you’re going in with a clean slate and you’re in it for just a decent time. If you overthink it or are a comic DORK like I am..you’re gonna end up hollering like an ape, humping the back of a chair and slinging feces at the TV as you rant about the misgivings like I did. It held to the comic canon for the most part, but some serious missteps prevent this movie from being up there with Batman Begins.

Movie Review: The guilty pleasure movie of 2010 has arrived! PIRANHA 3D is terrifying and hilarious. The perfect blend of horror and comedy. Forget everything you remember about the old originals cause director Aja’s version is fun, f*ed up, sexy and the 3D conversion works awesome!.. Finally, a 3D movie that’s more than just about your ordinary depth of field, this one straight up jumps at you and you’ll be either screaming or cringing at every gory shocking scene that flashes its way on to the screen. Now keep in mind that PIRANHA 3D is an awful, awful movie, but the kind that you’d wanna watch again and again and it’s got a lot of reasons for you to do exactly that.
From director Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”) comes the new action thriller “Piranha.” Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break; a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.
This is the type of movie that you don’t judge by the acting or the cinematography or the writing or the art direction or the costume or the story. Nope, If you’ve come for that, then you’re in the wrong theater buddy, go down the hall, two doors to your right for Inception.
PIRANHA 3D is the type of movie that’ mindless, simple, and yet every bit as intense and bloddy as the trailer suggests. This movie’s got countless boobies, it has Kelly Brook and Riley Steele completely naked doing underwater ballet…male audiences would think they’d hit a jackpot, it’s like watching soft core porno and… well yeah.. like watching soft core porno.
Jerry O’Connell is hilarious as the crazy Wild Wild Girls filmmaker, a character loosely based on the founder of Girls Gone Wild, Joe Francis. O’Connell in my book meets the most excruciating fate in this movie. One that no guy should every have to experience but one that his douchebag maniac perverted character somewhat deserves.
My only disappointments are that funnyman Paul Scheer doesn’t get to be funny at all and Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue acts like an amateur, she’s not that convincing, you can’t really see the fear for her children, but maybe that’s part of the joke in PIRANHA 3D, to have Scheer play O’Connel’s little b*tch and Shue knows that she doesn’t need to go all method for something like PIRANHA 3D because ass, boobies, and thousands of pissed off killer fish are the lead stars, they take the front seats.
If you think Ving Rhames is one badass mothaf*ka, it’s been validated by PIRANHA 3D.
Bodies mangled, heads scalped, eyeballs floating, penis floating. What’s makes it even super gross is that the Piranhas are only after the meat, so often times they’d leave the bones whole so you’d see somebody still screaming in pain because part of his right leg has been eaten away but the bones are still intact. F*ck shock value, this is more like shock insanity, the most obscene, disgusting things you can imagine is here in PIRANHA 3D.

JAKARTA: This Eid al-Fitr Muslim holiday, Malaysian Sharifa Ahmad is determined to make heads turn in her "Made in Indonesia" outfit -- a black flowing chiffon robe with embroidered neckline and matching headscarf hand stitched with Swarovski crystals.
"The dress is perfect for the holy day -- modest yet elegant. I'm definitely going to rock my little black Islamic dress," the 35-year-old civil servant said.
Ahmad is among a growing number of Muslim fashionistas across the region who visit Indonesia to splurge on new festive clothes to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fasting month, which falls on September 10.
The country's booming Islamic fashion industry reported a spike in sales of about 20 to 30 percent as early as June, thanks mainly to buyers like Ahmad from neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore, retailers said.
Busloads of women flock to textile markets in cities like Jakarta and Yogyakarta to buy fabric, ready-to-wear dresses and headscarves, textile seller Azizah said.
"They will come in tour buses, choose what they like and buy 10 to 20 pieces of fabric. When they return to their countries, some telephone us to place more orders," she said.
Ahmad flew on a budget airline from Kuala Lumpur in July, bought the fabric at a textile market in Jakarta and sent it to an Indonesian seamstress "to work her magic" before getting an friend to post it to her in Malaysia.
"I paid 600,000 rupiah (66 dollars) for it, half of what I would pay if I had it made in Malaysia. It's a bargain for designer quality," she said.
Chiffon, silk and crepe fabrics draping the silhouette in softer pastel colours, highlighted by delicate embellishments on the neck lines, are top fashion picks this year. Plainer headscarves strewn with Swarovski crystals replaced last year's heavily-embroidered beehive and turban craze.
"Some people shop for themselves. Others buy to resell. They would buy 10 yards of fabric of the same design in three colours, tailor the dresses here and sell them at a higher price in their boutiques back home," textile merchant Vishal Kumar said.
Hoping to cash in on one of the most important dates on the Islamic calendar, Islamic fashion designer Dian Pelangi flew to Cairo, Abu Dhabi, London, Australia and Malaysia several months ago to hawk her wares.
She said she sold "thousands" of pieces from her Eid collection at fashion exhibitions in those countries for around 2.5 million rupiah (277 dollars) each.
"Arab women are glamorous. They love their bling. My Islamic brown robes with hand-drawn batik detail at the bottom were sold out. Those with beadwork and rhinestones were also popular," she added.
"Middle-eastern customers don't bargain much and when they like something, they buy a lot. Some buy 20 to 30 pieces at one go. It's a very lucrative market," Pelangi said.
Sales of her Islamic dresses, priced from 20 to 300 dollars, tripled in July and jumped 10 times in August as local buyers joined in, she said.
Indonesia offers lower prices, quality workmanship, creativity in design and a variety of fabrics, from batik and ikat weaving to gold-threaded songket.
Hassan Marican, director of Singaporean clothing company Second Chance Properties Limited, said it imported 20 percent of its ready-made festive dresses from Indonesia and sold them at double the cost price.
"We buy from Indonesia because it's cheap. For us businessmen, it all boils down to the price. Also we want some embroidery and beadwork. Our suppliers in China and Malaysia can't provide that," he said.
"For Islamic fashion, Malaysia and Singapore always look to Indonesia for pointers. They're very creative. Their headscarf designs are unmatchable."
Industry Minister MS Hidayat said export of textiles and textile products this year was projected to reach 10 billion dollars, up from 9.26 billion dollars last year, or about eight percent of total exports.
While fashion creations represented only a small fraction of those exports, there is great room for expansion, he said.
"Fashion products have great potential to be developed. We're rich in natural resources and cultural heritage which can be inspiring and spur creativity," the minister said.
Indonesian Fashion Designers Association chairman Taruna Kusmaryuda Kusmayadi agreed.
He hopes Indonesian designers can help change the world's perception that Islamic attire is dull, stuffy and unfashionable.
"Sometimes when you mention Muslim or Islam, people develop an allergy. They think it's a very scary religion," he said.
"But Islamic attire can be both modest and stylish. And also fun. They aren't worn only during special Islamic days by country folks who read the Koran day and night. Modern city women wear them too while filling up gas for their BMWs," he added with a laugh.

MUMBAI: Director Siddharth Anand is apparently very confident about actor Ranbir Kapoor, the hero of his film ‘Anjaana Anjaani’. Siddharth finds him promising and hardworking among the younger league, with a prospective talent to become the next iconic actor, Amitabh Bachchan.
Convinced with Ranbir’s caliber in acting, Siddharth stated that he’s got everything it takes to be the complete Hindi film hero that Bachchan was in his days.
Further praising about his film’s hero, the director believes that if Ranbir chooses to do an action film, he would definitely fill the void that Amitabh had created.
It is believed that Ranbir who has already worked with Siddharth in his earlier film ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’, was always made to do the strangest of things in his films.
In his last film, he made the actor to stand at the tip of a cliff for the ‘Khuda jaane’ song in ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ even though he was aware that the young actor has a vertigo problem.
For one sequence in ‘Anjaana Anjaani’, he made Ranbir to stand in the freezing waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Admitting about the sequence, Siddharth stated that Ranbir did the scene even though he has aqua phobia.
Having given hits like ‘Salaam Namaste’ and ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’, the director is all confident that his latest comedy film ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ will be a hit among the audience.
‘Anjaana Anjaani’ which is releasing on the 24th of this month, is about two strangers who accidentally meet in a strange situation and then sometime later they part as strangers.
Unlike other typical Bollywood films ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ has a unique concept, reveals the director.
“It's a very unique concept for a Hindi film, but it's deep-rooted as a Hindi commercial film. It has songs, stories, beautiful locations and fabulous performances,” stated Siddharth.
Talking about his lead costar’s Ranbir and Priyanka pairing in the film, Siddharth stated that he wanted a virgin pair, since the film is about the chemistry between two people.
"Ranbir is a brilliant actor; so I needed someone who would be able to match that. Priyanka just fitted in unbelievably," further added the director.

LONDON: DCI Gene Hunt would have a few choice words to say if he had to fire up this instead of his Quattro.
With a top speed of 25mph, it would hardly be the wheels of choice for a Life on Mars detective and would be hard-pressed to catch anything – let alone a getaway car.
Even so, Lincolnshire Police hope this five-ton tractor could help bring criminals to justice.
The John Deere 6630, complete with distinctive blue and yellow livery, is being used for Operation Fusion, the force’s initiative against rural crime.
It will appear at agricultural shows to encourage farmers to ‘tag’ their own tractorswith Smartwater, a liquid produced in unique batches that can be seen under UV light to identify the owner.
With a whopping price tag of £50,000, not including the custom paint job, the force can count itself lucky that it is being loaned the tractor by the manufacturer.
The tractor has been kitted out with a flashing blue light, police stripes and badges. The force will have to pay its running costs.
Although serving a rather passive role on a day-to-day basis, senior officers think it might come in handy in the event of severe flooding or an environmental disaster.
Chief Inspector Phil Vickers, who came up with the idea, said: ‘I have taken the tractor out for a spin and it does require some skill to control, so all credit to the guys who do this for a living.
‘The tractor looks like a bit of fun but there is a serious message behind it – that we take rural crime seriously and want to work closely with our local communities. At this time of year agricultural crime can have a big impact on farmers because if a tractor is stolen people can lose their jobs or livelihood.
‘That’s why we are trying to make people aware of all the deterrents that are available and encouraging farmers to avoid becoming victims by tagging their vehicles.’
The cost of altering the vehicle’s standard green livery was paid for by the National Farmers Union following a year in which the value of tractor thefts soared as many were stolen to order for delivery to Eastern Europe and Russia.
More than 2,000 tractors worth £42million were stolen last year, up by a third on 2008.
An NFU spokesman said: ‘Tractors and farm implements seem to be at the top of thieves’ shopping lists at the moment, so NFU is delighted to support Lincolnshire Police in its drive to make farmers aware of how they can better protect their farms.’
