Twin sisters Jeannie and Lauren– live in Austin, Texas. Jeannie co-owns a vintage clothing store with Amanda, a semi-estranged friend who she fears is trying to end their partnership. Lauren leads a looser, less tethered existence and is considering getting out of the country altogether. When Jeannie receives an email from Amanda threatening a lawsuit, she calls her law student ex-boyfriend Merrill for help. Eager for distraction from his own problems, he begins helping the sisters with theirs.BEESWAX is a story about families, real and imagined, people taking care of each other when they want to, when they need to, when they ought to. It is also a film that perhaps moves the most BEESWAX is a story about families, real and imagined, people taking care of each other when they want to, when they need to, when they ought to. It is also a film that perhaps moves the most famous member of the "Mumblecore" out of the group and into the next stage of his career. Like Bujalski’s previous films, the cast of BEESWAX is made up of non-professional (but carefully cast) actors and filmed with a light, fast-moving crew. The goal is to tell an intimate, peculiar story the likes of which one could not achieve via a more traditional, large-scale mode of production.
The story revolves primarily around a pair of twin sisters–Jeannie, who has been in a wheelchair since her youth, and Lauren. Jeannie co-owns a vintage clothing store with her semi-estranged friend Amanda, while Lauren is between jobs and between boyfriends, considering going overseas to teach English. Tensions are mounting between Jeannie and Amanda, their management styles clashing and communication problems getting exacerbated. An e-mail from Amanda implying that their conflict will end in a lawsuit if necessary sends Jeannie into a mild panic–Amanda’s lawyer father had written up all their agreements and Jeannie feels beleaguered and at a distinct disadvantage. She calls on an ex-boyfriend, Merrill, who has just graduated from law school and is studying for the bar, and after falling immediately into bed together, Merrill begins distracting himself from his own problems by trying to assist Jeannie.
Various strategies for dealing with the Amanda crisis are discussed and pursued, though it remains infuriatingly unclear exactly how serious the crisis is–Amanda remains in the background and no one knows how idle her threat has been. When Lauren, at loose ends, gets roped into a familial obligation back home with her mother, her mother’s partner, Sally, somewhat overreaching her step-motherly bounds, tries to involve herself in Jeannie’s problems. In this typically low-key comedy drama from independent writer/director Andrew Bujalski, Jeannie (Tilly Hatcher) and Lauren (Maggie Hatcher) are a pair of twin sisters living in Austin, TX, who are close without having much in common. Jeannie, who is confined to a wheelchair, runs a well-established vintage clothing store called Storyville with her longtime friend Amanda (Anne Dodge), while Lauren drifts from job to job and is pondering an offer to teach English in Kenya. Jeannie and Amanda have had a falling out and Jeannie is worried about her stake in the business, especially since the original partnership agreements were drawn up by Amanda's father. When Amanda suggests she may take legal action to take full control of Storyville, Jeannie decides she needs legal advice and turns to Merrill (Alex Karpovsky), a former boyfriend who has almost completed his law degree. Merrill is feeling frazzled as he tries to pass the bar exam and he welcomes the distraction, but it isn't long before he forgets one of the first rules of legal ethics and begins sleeping with Jeannie. Lauren, meanwhile, wants to be of assistance to her sister, but she gets roped into helping her mother with her myriad problems while trying to make sense of her own future. Beeswax was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival.

"Beeswax," the third feature from American indie auteur Andrew Bujalski ("Funny Ha Ha," "Mutual Appreciation"), offers yet another low-key take on twentysomethings finding their way. Character-driven slice-of-life thesped mostly by nonpros resolutely avoids the dramatic -- dwelling instead on the moments in between. Unlikely to reach much beyond the helmer's fan base (some of whom will think he's treading water), this modest but fest-friendly item could slip into niche arthouse slots, drawing the same Gen-Y demographic as his earlier pics.
Texas-set tale centers on charismatic twin sisters who share an Austin home. Athletic free-spirit Lauren (Maggie Hatcher, a college friend of Bujalski) is between jobs and boyfriends and considering going abroad to teach English.
More tightly wound Jeannie (Tilly Hatcher, a teacher and artist who created the colorful opening and closing title card collages) is a paraplegic who co-owns a local vintage store where she has ongoing problems with business partner Amanda (Anne Dodge). Matter-of-fact depiction of her disability reps a marketing plus that could be used to target new audiences.
Fearing Amanda might sue her, Jeannie solicits the advice of former boyfriend Merrill (indie filmmaker Alex Karpovsky), a law student studying for the bar exam. As the pair rekindle their relationship, loquacious Merrill takes an overactive interest in Jeannie's problem.
While the Jeannie-Amanda conflict motors the loose plot, its exact nature remains irritatingly vague. Equally annoying, an offer from the twins' mother's lover Sally (Janet Pierson) to invest in the shop never seems to get conveyed to Jeannie.
Although Bujalski's spin on the legal thriller lacks narrative tension, it ambles on pleasantly enough, buoyed by the twins' refreshingly forthright screen presence. Abrupt ending feels like a cop-out.
Essentially, the slight story could take place anywhere; the anonymous-looking exteriors don't exploit locations in any way. However, the Austin setting permitted the helmer to recruit a supporting cast of local filmmakers (including the producer-director Zellner brothers, animator Katy O'Connor and editor Kyle Henry) as well as South by Southwest Film Fest honcho Pierson, all of whom supply credible perfs.
On his third outing with Bujalski, d.p. Matthias Grunsky's intimate, unshowy lensing keeps the focus on the characters, with Jeannie's wheelchair taking on a presence of its own. Uncredited production design has a homemovie feel.

When 17-year-old Meryem is found disheveled and unconscious by the side of a lake in the countryside, her family believes the worst – that her chastity has been lost. They turn to the ancient principle of "tore," a strict moral code that condemns Meryem to death. The duty of upholding the family’s honor falls upon a distant cousin, Cemal, who has just completed a brutal tour in the military. Together they embark on a surprising journey across traditional and modern-day Turkey.
A widower decides to marry again, with the approval of both his own son and his future stepson. The latter falls in love with a girl whose parents wanted to find a home for her by selling her to foreigners. The trade in young women is uncovered thanks to the stepson's intervention. In the meantime, the widower's son's family is in a crisis, because he has too much work and is too often away from home.
Traditional and modern mores in contempo Turkey cross paths in the strikingly lensed "Bliss," an upscale meller with shades of "Knife in the Water." Formulaic yarn about a disgraced Anatolian girl, her putative killer and an Istanbul sociology prof who find themselves cruising the Sea of Marmara in his luxury yacht is given dramatic heft by good perfs -- especially by actress du jour Ozgu Namal -- and careful direction by producer-helmer Abdullah Oguz. Given the international stature of composer-writer Zulfu Livaneli's original novel, accessible pic could even sail into limited theatrical ports as well as festival berths.
In the barren landscape of eastern Turkey, the unconscious body of 17-year-old Meryem (Namal) is brought back to the house of her father, Tahsin (Emin Gursoy), and harridan stepmother, Done (Sebnem Kostem). Meryem won't talk about what happened, but her family feels shamed by what they believe to be her compliant loss of chastity.
Ali Riza Amca (Mustafa Avkiran), Tahsin's cousin and the village's local bigshot, decrees she should pay for her "crime" according to ancient custom. He orders his son, Cemal (Murat Han), fresh out of military service, to take Meryem to Istanbul and quietly dispose of her en route. Meryem herself thinks she's being taken to meet Yakup (Erol Babaoglu), another of Ali Riza's sons, for an arranged marriage.
On the way, Cemal can't bring himself to bump off Meryem and, in Istanbul, is given a tongue-lashing by Yakup, who long ago broke free of the village and its crazy customs. But Cemal can't return until the job is done.
At this half-hour point, pic cuts to a wealthy Istanbul couple, Irfan (Talat Bulut) and Aysel (Lale Mansur), whose marriage has clearly stalled. In a development that the script doesn't prepare viewers for, Irfan just walks out of their snazzy home, leaving a note that he needs "a chance to breathe."
As Cemal and Meryem hide out at a remote fish farm, they cross paths with Irfan on his yacht. After joining him on his cruise, Meryem finds herself caught between the two men's growing affections for her, while, unknown to all, Ali Reza's men are hot on her trail.
Livaneli's original novel has been stripped of much of its political subtext and some of the two men's backgrounding, and the character of Meryem has been placed centerstage. But as a quality mainstream movie, it still works, thanks in no small part to Namal's sly perf as a browbeaten country lass who's still capable of humor and tenderness.
Thesp works well against Han's Cemal, a conflicted ex-army type given to sudden explosions of masculine prowess, and vet Bulut's sophisticated, avuncular Irfan. Director Oguz marbles the film with several lighter moments before the admirably brief climax and coda back in Anatolia, which is surprisingly moving.
Production values are tops, with eye-watering lensing by Bosnian d.p. Mirsad Herovic of locations in Marmara, Bodrum and Anatolia. Music by Livaneli himself adds further professional color.

In a sleepy lagoon off the coast of Japan lies a shocking secret that a few desperate men will stop at nothing to keep hidden from the world. In Taiji, Japan, former dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was O'Barry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the international television sensation "Flipper." One fateful day, a heartbroken Barry came to realize that these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures must never be subjected to human captivity again. This mission has brought him to Taiji, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the sleek, playful dolphins and whales that swim off their coast. But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and "Keep Out" signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling and the consequences are so dangerous to human health that they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it.

I am a complete sucker for anything that takes place in, under or near the water. Even Jaws: The Revenge. Whenever that crapfest is on AMC, I always find myself watching in pure horror. Not that the movie itself is scary. The flick is so bad I can't take my eyes off the screen.

The Cove tells the amazing true story of how an elite team of activists, filmmakers and freedivers embarked on a covert mission to penetrate a hidden cove in Japan, shining light on a dark and deadly secret. The shocking discoveries they uncovered were only the tip of the iceberg.

So far, The Cove has a 9.0 out of 10.0 over on the IMDb and an 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (with five reviews). It will hit the Detroit area-where I am-the same weekend as the nauseatingly horrible GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra...that would be August 7, for anyone not in the know.

There's a whole bunch of social networking links on the website, including a link to Facebook where there's a spirited discussion about potential anti-Japanese sentiment in the film itself. Most of us have to wait to cast our own opinions on the matter.

In the 1960's, Richard O'Barry was the world's leading authority on dolphin training, working on the set of the popular television program "Flipper." Day in and day out, O'Barry kept the dolphins working and television audiences smiling. But one day, that all came to a tragic end. "The Cove," directed by Louie Psihoyos, tells the amazing true story of how Psihoyos, O'Barry and an elite team of activists, filmmakers and freedivers embarked on a covert mission to penetrate a hidden cove in Japan, shining light on a dark and deadly secret. The mysteries they uncovered were only the tip of the iceberg.

Azhagar Malai is about the egoistic and irate village heads and a youngster trying to change their attitude.
Patently, it isn’t just about stories every day, but off interesting infos… Well, the most exhilarating part of this film was all about Maestro Ilayaraja making his onscreen appearance. Now, there’s yet another interesting fact and that is all about a BUS... How can a Bus be a prominent character in this flick? Of course, for the first time – here’s a BUS being depicted with such importance. Certainly, the entire village where the film is being shot considered the same BUS to be a real life friend.

Once the sources revealed that the film crew is gonna break the bus, they merely hid it in an unknown place. The entire film team had including RK, Baanu, Vadivelu and others had to wait nearly for half a day. Later, as the issue was unraveled to them, they rushed to bus owner to settle the confusions.

Issue was immediately taken to police station, where the film crew promised the Bus Owner that there wouldn’t be any damage to BUS. In case of anything serious to the property, they assured about fixing them perfectly.

Accidentally, the bus was damaged, but producer as assured fixed them properties exactly.

Music review:
Azhagarmalai is a revelation! You get to hear the Raja of yore across various stages of his spectacular career, that too with minimal synth that plagues his recent works. Bhavatharini’s Unnai enakku is the only mild causality of the later part of Raja’s form, but even here, his tune and dazzling interludes help significantly! Evoking the mid-90s, ‘last known good configuration’ feeling is Raja’s own vocals in the dulcet Ulagam ippo, reminiscent of his work on films like Kalaignan and Aatma.

It’s the Avathaaram/ Azhagi mid-90s sound in the beautiful duet, Karuga mani - totally melodious and breezy! Muthamma goes a few more years back, to early 90s, while maintaining the authentic, rustic, but mildly spruced up sound that Raja pioneered - one catchy track. Kezhakku velukkudhu is an interesting concoction - the rhythms that occupy for most part of the song is ideally late 80s, but the composer fuses some of his later sound fascinatingly. It’s the same feel, only a bit more uncontaminated and Ramarajan-styled in Enna senjaalum, with Raja’s trademark rhythms and an astounding anupallavi, sung by Tippu and Ponni. Despite the B-gradism surrounding Azhagarmalai, composer Ilayaraja shocks the listener with a mesmerizing return to form…sheer joy!

Reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in “Art & Copy” were responsible for "Just Do It," "I Love NY," "Where's the Beef?," "Got Milk," "Think Different," and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.
The advertising industry in America exists in a paradox -- while it's all but impossible to go a day without being exposed to the work of leading figures in the advertising business, very little is known about the people behind the ads and the process by which they're created. Filmmaker Doug Pray offers a rare look inside the business of advertising in the documentary Art & Copy, in which he profiles a number of the most respected men and women in the ad game as they talk about their work, their motivations, and their views on the creative process. Pray's interview subjects include Lee Clow, who created memorable television spots for Apple's Macintosh computer and later their iPod MP3 player; Rich Silverstein and Jeff Goodby, who gave new life to the dairy industry with the "Got Milk?" campaign; Hal Riney, who helped put Ronald Reagan in the White House with his "Morning in America" TV spot; George Lois, who remade popular culture by coining the slogan "I Want My MTV"; and Mary Wells, the first woman to run a major ad agency and the creator of the "I (heart) New York" campaign. Sponsored in part by the One Club, an organization dedicated to excellence in advertising, Art & Copy received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival

"Art & Copy" is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray ("Surfwise", "Scratch", "Hype!"), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry.

Movie Review: THE WRESTLER
The Wrestler, the 2008 film by Darren Aronofsky which loudly trumpeted the return of Mickey Rourke to Hollywood, isn't so much a story about one man's redemption as it is about a desperate, last grasp at a former life. Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Rourke) was a successful professional wrestling some 20 years ago. Now he lives in a run down trailer, estranged from his daughter and working at a local grocery store to make ends meet. A health scare literally scares him into evaluating his life and trying to fix various relationships. But is it too late?
First things first, though. Rourke, nominated for both a Golden Globe and Oscar for his role here, fully inhabits The Ram from start to finish. There is an emotional truth to the character which comes from understanding and ultimately living the traits. Rourke refuses to preen for the camera, to be a typical beautiful movie star. By allowing all his warts and bruises to be seen, his appearance lends credibility to the dialogue and situation. It's not just the physical attributes Rourke brings to the table which shape The Ram. The performance itself really is secondary, though no less important than the way he looks.
And because of what Rourke brings to the table, The Wrestler works on every level, save one: a subplot concerning his daughter, Stephanie, played by Evan Rachel Wood. While the script explains-somewhat-the issues surrounding their relationship, it doesn't delve deeply enough, contend instead to show Stephanie in handful of scenes. This storyline should have been amped up a bit to, at least, the level of a potential romance Randy tries to pursue with dancer Cassidy (Marisa Tomei). Why? Quite simply, it is much easier to identify with and understand the father/daughter dynamic without much exposition while a certain foundation needs to be laid for Cassidy and Randy.
This may be the prototypical American story in which a man who had it all and lost it tries desperately to regain a family, friends and social circle. See, Randy neglected his life in favor of wrestling; he felt, evidently, his body would hold up forever and he'd never be forced from the ring. It's a common fallacy, especially evident as people look for potential mates. They judge the prospective partner based on looks and then what is on the inside. In essence, that's exactly what Randy and everyone around him have been doing. Expecting their physicality to make them happy when, in reality, the people should be a priority. He even admits the true problem late in the film. He's lonely. He has no one.
And that's what makes him, ultimately, a selfish character. Randy doesn't continue to wrestle to support Stephanie or to prove to Cassidy he is responsible. He does it for the personal adoration of the fans and the money. Why does he work in a grocery store, a job he clearly hates? In order to live from day to day. When Randy actually realizes what he's been doing, Rourke makes it painful to watch. Here is a man, a mere half hour (in real world time) ago, who was joking and having fun with the customers at the deli counter. There's a fundamental shift in his thought process, in his being, which makes him lash out, unhappy being forced into a role he doesn't want. Of course, if Randy doesn't want it, Randy doesn't do it.
(Contrast Randy with Cassidy, a woman who dances to make money with the express purpose of moving her son to a better town and, by extension, a better life.)
Therein is the beauty of The Wrestler. It is promoted as a sports movie yet only uses that sport as a way to draw the viewer into Randy's world. Writer Robert Siegel understood this going in and, instead of layering in "insider language," he made sure to put the human story front and center. Yes, there are factoids and a look into the wrestling culture-a scene where Randy cuts his forehead with a razor blade in the ring shows just how scripted wrestling really is-though they are completely balanced with Randy's struggle. Aronofsky, Siegel and Rourke make us want Randy to succeed even though it is fairly evident he'll never be able to give up the one thing that has defined who he is for his entire adult life. That's the beauty and ultimate tragedy of The Wrestler: we're so accustomed to the feel good story where a person picks themselves up out of the gutter we expect the same here
