The Sicilian Girl Movie synopsis: Inspired by a true story, on November 5th 1991, Rita Atria a young 17-year-old Sicilian girl, goes to see an anti-Mafia judge Paolo Borsellino to denounce the Mafia system that was responsible for the murder of her father and her brother. The Sicilian Girl Review: By the looks of it, Italian filmmakers have had enough of the mafia and they’re not going to take it anymore, first with Gomorrah and now this more conventional release, a story of true courage and real life heroism. The lead character of Rita is effective and engrossing for the duration, despite some ropey acting, because she is a clever balance of near martyr and impetuousity. Her bravery is balanced by her headstrong, stubborn ways that often serve to undermine her goal of revenge against the organization that has destroyed her family, both living and dead. She is a human being with notable flaws as well as virtues that make her seem both vulnerable but ultimately capable of pulling off a previously unheard of feat. Supporting this story is a classical aesthetic, the result of picturesque Sicilian locations as well as tasteful camera work. In particular, the opening sequences are ravishing and are a major factor in immediately drawing you into the world of the story. There is also some attractive landscape photography in the best traditions of Italian cinema. The final moments are truly shocking, even though the nature of the conclusion is hinted at throughout. It is the final emotional blow in a film that recounts a major turning point in Sicily’s war against organized crime with a palpable, angry passion.

I’m friendly with all my co-stars and Diganth is no exception. He is a good co-star to work with. We had a blast while shooting for ‘Bisile’,” said Jennifer. “Diganth is certainly a big romantic star and he will go up with every film. I am a big fan of Diganth. I enjoyed doing this film with Diganth. “I have done films with big artists like Ravichandran, Upendra, Shivaraj Kumar and with them I had to be little serious and professional. But Diganth was a great co-star to work with,” she said at the audio release function of “Bisile”. Jennifer also said her appreciation for Diganth shouldn’t be misinterpreted. “My appreciation for Diganth was genuine and should not mean that I enjoy a special relationship with him. Our chemistry was great during the shooting of the film. Both of us were cracking jokes at each other’s expense. I dont know how to react if such friendly gestures are misinterpreted,” she said.

Tokyo's 'oldest man' had been dead for 30 years He was thought to be the oldest man in Tokyo - but when officials went to congratulate Sogen Kato on his 111th birthday, they uncovered mummified skeletal remains lying in his bed.
Officials had planned a birthday celebration to honour Mr Kato but they found him dead
Mr Kato may have been dead for 30 years according to Japanese authorities. They grew suspicious when they went to honour Mr Kato at his address in Adachi ward, but his granddaughter told them he "doesn't want to see anybody".
Police are now investigating the family on possible fraud charges.
'Living Buddha' Welfare officials had tried to meet Mr Kato since early this year. But when they went to visit, family members repeatedly chased them away, according to Tomoko Iwamatsu, an Adachi ward official. Authorities grew suspicious and sought an investigation by police, who forced their way into the house on Wednesday. They discovered a mummified body, believed to be Kato, lying in his bed, wearing underwear and pyjamas, covered with a blanket. Mr Kato's relatives told police that he had "confined himself in his room more than 30 years ago and became a living Buddha," according to a report by Jiji Press. But the family had received 9.5 million yen ($109,000) in widower's pension payments via Mr Kato's bank account since his wife died six years ago, and some of the money had recently been withdrawn. The pension fund had long been unable to contact Mr Kato. "His family must have known he has been dead all these years and acted as if nothing happened. It's so eerie," said Yutaka Muroi, a Tokyo metropolitan welfare official.

Cobra recovered by Jaipur police Many of the snakes were reportedly ill-treated A man has been arrested on suspicion of breaking wildlife laws after he was found with 43 snakes in his car, police in the Indian city of Jaipur have said. Rajesh Kapoor was arrested with the snakes, including eight protected cobras, in a cotton bag, police said. Mr Kapoor has previously been linked with idol smuggling and antiques theft, superintendent of police Hawa Singh Ghumariya said.
A snake rescue team was looking after the snakes. The arrested man runs a fitness centre in Jaipur and told journalists that he hoped to sells the snakes on the international market. Police say that he claimed to have got the snakes from snake charmers - but their investigations revealed this to be untrue and he was arrested on suspicion of various offences in contravention of India's wildlife laws. A snake rescue team led by Piyush Shashtri has now been deployed by police to treat the serpents, some of which are suffering from injuries, police said. They said that three species of snake were found, but only the cobras were poisonous. It is believed they were ill-treated and kept in cruel conditions. ''Snakes are in big demand on the international market for their skins and venom," Mr Shashtri said. "Body parts are also in demand to use in herbal medicine." Mr Ghumariya said that the snakes will be released into the forest "after completing the legal process".

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has suggested Western allies are unwilling to move against the Pakistan Taliban. He said the fight against terrorists should focus on their training, funding and sanctuaries outside Afghanistan. Asked about Pakistan's alleged support for the Taliban, he suggested the West could strike, adding: "The question now is why they are not taking action?"
He also warned that the recent Wikileaks dossier case had endangered Afghan informants' lives. Wikileaks said it had removed the names of informants contained in the US military files that it published, but it has since emerged that hundreds of names have been exposed online. The classified documents on the website also carried allegations that Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence spy agency was secretly helping the Afghan insurgency. Drone attacks Mr Karzai told a news conference on Thursday in Kabul: "The war against terrorism is not in the villages or houses of Afghanistan... but in the sanctuaries, sources of funding and training [of terrorism] and they lie outside Afghanistan." Asked about claims of support from Islamabad for the Taliban, he said: "It is a different question whether Afghanistan has the ability to tackle this, but our allies have this capability; the question now is why they are not taking action?" His comments came as British Prime Minister David Cameron, on an official trip to India, was forced on Thursday to defend his remarks a day earlier criticising Pakistan's record in tackling militancy. The Pakistani military has lost hundreds of soldiers battling militants since it launched a major operation in South Waziristan in 2004. During 2005-06, Pakistan attracted worldwide criticism for signing peace deals with militants in South and North Waziristan. Last year, the military conducted operations in Malakand, including Swat, and South Waziristan. They are currently conducting an unannounced offensive in the Orakzai tribal region. But while the operations have loosened the grip of the Taliban, sporadic attacks by militants continue. Meanwhile, Pakistan's policy of turning a blind eye to militants who it believes are only focused on Afghanistan continues to compromise the safety of Pakistani citizens and soldiers. Ties between Kabul and Islamabad have been tense in recent years, amid allegations of a Pakistani role in militant attacks in Afghanistan. Mr Karzai has reached out to his neighbour, referring to the two countries as "brothers". However, the BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says the president will also bear in mind that anti-Pakistani feeling remains high in his country, which holds parliamentary elections in September. Afghan media and politicians last month accused Mr Karzai of appeasing Pakistan after he sacked his own intelligence chief, Amrullah Saleh. Our correspondent says Islamabad had for years sought the removal of Mr Saleh, who had publicly accused Pakistan's spy agency of sponsoring Taliban attacks in Afghanistan. In Thursday's news conference, Mr Karzai also said that the Wikileaks disclosures on Afghan informants were "extremely irresponsible and shocking". When more than 90,000 intelligence documents appeared on the website this week, those responsible said they were holding back 15,000 files that could threaten the lives of individuals. But it has since emerged that the names, home villages and even GPS locations of Afghans co-operating with Nato forces had actually been published by Wikileaks.
French woman faces charges over newborn babies' deaths 29 July 2010 Last updated at 13:16 GMT A French woman has been placed under investigation over the deaths of eight newborn babies, while her husband has been freed without charge.
Dominique Cottrez, 47, has admitted suffocating her babies and said husband Pierre-Marie Cottrez knew nothing about the pregnancies, the prosecutor says. Mr Cottrez had initially faced investigation for allegedly concealing the bodies and not reporting crimes.
Mrs Cottrez faces charges of the voluntary homicide of the babies.
The remains were found in the village of Villers-au-Tertre, near the northern city of Lille.
Being placed under investigation is the first stage of criminal proceedings that can lead to charges. The prosecutor had requested the charges of failing to report the killings and hiding the bodies against Mr Cottrez, but the prosecutor said the investigating magistrate in the case had ruled against this. On Wednesday, police with sniffer dogs searched two houses in Villers-au-Tertre, after the new owners of a house in the commuter village called them following the discovery of remains in the garden.
The house belonged to the parents of the arrested woman. Police then conducted searches in another house in the village - that of the arrested couple - where the bodies of more babies were found.
Mrs Cottrez said she was fully aware of her pregnancies, but said she did not want any more children and did not want to see a doctor to use a means of contraception, the prosecutor in the case said at a news conference. "This is a case outside of the norms given the number of newborns," he added.
Mrs Cottrez said that after a first difficult birth because of her heavy weight, she did not want to see any more doctors. She was alone in her pregnancies and while giving birth, the prosecutor said.
The remains found in the first house were wrapped in plastic bags, while the other six bodies were found in the garage of the second house wrapped in closed plastic bags, hidden under a variety of objects.
The birth of the eight babies is said to have taken place between 1989 and 2006-07, the prosecutor said, although further tests will be able to determine the exact dates. Mr Cottrez said he had never noticed his wife's pregnancies because of her heavy weight, and had no idea she had been getting rid of the babies at birth, the prosecutor said. The couple have grown-up children and grandchildren. Mrs Cottrez is a care worker and Mr Cottrez is a member of the local council. "He's on his third term in office. He used to volunteer in the community. He's a respectable man," local mayor Patrick Mercier told reporters earlier on Thursday.
Previous cases The BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris says France has had a string of cases in recent years involving the deaths of newborn babies.
In March, a mother confessed to killing six of her newborn children and hiding them in the cellar of her house in north-west France. Another notorious case was that of Veronique Courjault, who was jailed last year for killing three of her babies while living in South Korea and in France. Buenos Aires, Jul 29: Argentina president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who had earlier made her support for Diego Maradona evident when she personally requested him to stay on as the coach, has now expressed emmense disappointment over the decision of the country's football association. "I'm very saddened by his departure. I thought he was very dignified with the team," said Kirchner. "He always defended the colours of his country with a lot of heart," she added. The president is learnt to have personally phoned the sacked coach after his Wednesday, Jul 28 press conference. She had earlier requested him personally to stay on as the coach. However, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) did not give him much of an option to make a choice as he was unanimously voted out over the national football team's defeat against Germany in FIFA World Cup 2010 quarter finals. At the press conference, the 49-year-old football legend accused Argentine Football Federation president Julio Grondona of lying to him and team manager Carlos Bilardo of betrayal.
"Grondona lied to me. Bilardo betrayed me...They asked me to put out the fire and we did it. I have given everything. Treason is everywhere. There are people who do not want the best for Argentine football," an emotional Maradona said. "They only have their own personal interests at heart," he lashed out.

Despite the public support that Maradona had garnered, the AFA voted unanimously to not renew Maradona's contract putting an end to his coaching career. It was not only the public that had poured in support for Maradona but the President Cristina Fernandez had personally requested him to stay. The media had speculated that Maradona will stay on as the coach based on his statement that he wished to stay as long as he was given the control over the choice of his assistants. Now, with the news of his ouster hitting the headlines it is suspected that the AFA was not happy with the idea of given him the control he wanted. Maradona, who had earned the reputation of being the world's best player in 1980s, began coaching in Nov 2008.

(CNN) -- Rising waters from flooding in northeastern China hit a chemical plant and washed thousands of containers filled with explosive chemicals into a river, state media said Thursday.
The floods in Jilin province have so far killed 13 people and affected 150,000 others, the Xinhua news agency said.
On Wednesday, the rising water hit the chemical plant and 7,000 containers washed into the Songhua River -- 3,000 of which were filled with explosive chemicals, Xinhua said.
Emergency teams were mobilized to recover the spilled fluid. Authorities have so far recovered 400 containers.
A government spokesman said that emergency teams tested the water and have determined it to be chemical-free, Xinhua said.

Rights group Amnesty International has accused Iran of persecuting a lawyer involved in the high profile case of a woman sentenced to death by stoning. Mohammad Mostafaei, who is defending the woman, was called in on Saturday for questioning at Tehran's Evin prison. Amnesty says he appears to have gone missing after his release. The authorities have since detained his wife and brother-in-law, it says. Mr Mostafaei is a known critic of Iran's judicial system. He has defended many juvenile offenders, political prisoners and others sentenced to stoning. Among his most high-profile clients is Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning following a conviction for adultery.

Although that threat was lifted earlier this month, she still faces execution by hanging. The case has prompted outrage all over the world, and protests were held in a number of countries at the weekend. In a statement, Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa director, said: "Mohammad Mostafaei is a thorn in the side of the Iranian authorities and we fear that he is being persecuted in an attempt to stop him carrying out his professional activities," said The Iranian authorities have clearly been angered by the international campaign to save Ashtiani, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo. The government has also put pressure on another lawyer involved in the case, as well as Ashtiani's son, who has been campaigning hard for her release, our correspondent says. An extended report on state television blamed exiled opposition groups for using the issue to stir up demonstrations against Iran, and now the Iranian government appears to be trying to silence her lawyers, he adds.
