Cat Abducted From SF Returns Home From NYC
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP) ― A visually impaired kitten that was abducted from the San Francisco SPCA last year is back home after it was found wandering the streets of New York City.
Jack Daniels arrived in San Francisco on Tuesday aboard a JetBlue Airways flight. SPCA officials say the kitten was only 3 months old when it was abducted from their adoption center in July 2009.
They have no idea who took it or how it got to New York. But the male cat was found and picked up by animal care and control officials around 110th Street in New York City on July 31. It looked healthy — weighing around 11 pounds — and didn't appear to have spent much time outdoors.
A microchip on the cat helped determine it was from San Francisco.
SPCA officials say the cat has scarred corneas that make its vision blurry.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A man accused of having sex with a widow and impregnating her remained in Taliban detention Tuesday, his future unclear.
The 47-year-old woman, Sanam Gul, also known as Sanam Bibi, was killed in Badghis province in western Afghanistan Saturday morning, said Ashrafuddin Majidi, the provincial governor's spokesman.
A Taliban commander carried out the execution, shooting the woman in her head, said Hashim Habibi, the district governor of Qades, which is located in the province.
Gul had been widowed for four years. She was accused of adultery for her relationship with the unnamed man, said Abdul Jabar, the provincial police chief.
Local residents said the man had planned to marry Gul. Instead, the Taliban whipped him 200 times and detained him, Jabar said.
The International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan condemned the killing.
"This tragic gruesome brutality is an example of Taliban justice," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, director of the ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center.
"This is not what the people of Afghanistan want -- they want peace and freedom and that's what we're going to help provide."
A private plane carrying a former head of NASA and, possibly, former Sen. Ted Stevens crashed Monday night in a rugged stretch of Alaska.Video,
Former U.S. senator may have been on plane that crashed in Alaska
By the CNN Wire Staff August 10, 2010 -- Updated 1700 GMT (0100 HKT)
(CNN) -- A private plane carrying a former head of NASA and, possibly, former Sen. Ted Stevens crashed Monday night in a rugged stretch of Alaska. The crash left at least five people dead, and crews have arrived to help survivors.
EADS North America said its chief executive officer, Sean O'Keefe, a former head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was a passenger on the aircraft. The family of the former Alaskan Republican senator would neither confirm nor deny reports that the ex-lawmaker was aboard.
The Stevens family issued a statement Tuesday offering their prayers for the crash victims.
"The Ted Stevens family offers their prayers for all those on board and for their families. We thank the brave men and women who are working to reach the site," said a family statement read on CNN by Stevens' former chief of staff, Mitch Rose.
"We continue to work with the Alaska National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Alaska state troopers. We thank everyone for their support and prayers," the statement said.
The news has reverberated across the state. Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, sent out a Twitter message saying: "Heartbreaking Bristol Bay plane crash. Alaska's heart surrounds loved ones. More info coming in; pls pray for Dillingham rescue this morning."
Alaska's two current U.S. senators also issued statements.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, asked "Alaskans to join me in prayer for all those aboard the aircraft and their families." Sen. Mark Begich, a Democrat, said his "thoughts and prayers are with those on board the plane and their families as we wait for more information."
Federal Aviation Administration reports said eight or nine people were on the plane, which crashed near the town of Dillingham.
The agency's Alaska office said two survivors had serious injuries and two had minor injuries, and it said the flight was from GCI Lodge on Lake Nerka to Dillingham.
Though EADS North America confirmed O'Keefe was on the plane, there was no word on his fate.
"Local authorities are reporting that there are survivors and a rescue operation is under way," said Guy Hicks, a company spokesman "No other details are available at this time."
EADS North America is a subsidiary of EADS, the European aerospace company.
The National Transportation Safety Board has assembled a team to probe the crash. Senior air safety investigator Clint Johnson, from the board's Anchorage regional office, will be the investigator in charge, and the entire team is expected in Dillingham by midday.
Inclement weather was reported in the area at the time of the crash, said Coast Guard spokesman Major Guy Hayes.
The Dillingham region, near the Bering Sea southwest of Anchorage, is rugged terrain surrounded by mountains.
Storms there don't move quickly during this time of year but aren't as strong as those in winter, said Rob Marciano, CNN meteorologist.
"We haven't seen visibility improve much, so fog is an issue and we haven't seen much in the way of that clearing," he said.
There is a lot of air travel in the state amid perilous weather and terrain. In 1978, Stevens survived a plane crash. In 1972, House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and U.S. Rep. Nick Begich were traveling in a plane that is thought to have crashed in Alaska. It was never found. Nick Begich was the father of the current U.S. senator, Mark Begich.
The NTSB said the plane crashed 10 miles northwest of Aleknagik about 8 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Paul Takemoto said that the plane was a DeHavilland DHC-3. He said its tail number was N455A and it was registered to GCI Communications Corp., based in Anchorage.
The Air Force 11th Rescue Coordination Center, which is manned by Alaska National Guardsmen, was contacted by Dillingham Flight Service after someone spotted the downed aircraft.
Aircraft were helping in the recovery effort, and medical personnel were on scene assisting the crash victims, the Guard said.
Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman, said three rescue squadrons of the Alaska Air National Guard have been asked by the coordination center to respond to the scene. They fly both helicopters and fixed wing-aircraft, and are currently battling bad weather.
The Alaska Air National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard are currently on-scene of a plane crash that occurred 17-miles north of Dillingham Monday night, according to Alaska's Department of Military and Veteran Affairs.
An Alaska Air National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter carrying rescue crews landed Tuesday morning and gave "medical support to the crash victims," it said.
"A U.S. Coast Guard C-130 will be available to take victims in need of serious medical support to Anchorage, once victims are transported to Dillingham," the agency said.
O'Keefe had a long career in the government and higher education, most recently serving as NASA administrator from December 2001 until his resignation in February 2005.
Before heading NASA, O'Keefe served for 11 months as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, overseeing the preparation, management and administration of the federal budget.

London, Aug 10 (ANI): A British computer engineer has died after he tied himself naked to a tree with a cord wrapped around his penis.
Kevin Kirkland, 44, is said to have used a pair of makeshift rope handcuffs to attach himself to the trunk, but got trapped when a knot jammed around his wrists.
Telford Magistrates Court was told that Kirkland had drunk seven pints of lager and a vodka and coke with a pal, and then after leaving his friend's place on December 30 he returned to his home in Newport, Shropshire.
He then made the handcuffs by melting a single piece of rope to make two loops for his wrists, and then walked to a canal near his home where he stripped naked and attached himself to the tree using the rope.
Kirkland then found he was unable to free himself, and in the pitch black and freezing temperatures he began to rub the rope up and down the tree, stripping the bark of moss and cutting his wrists.
The next morning dog walker Mark Griffiths and his partner Elaine Batho heard him crying for help, and found his body slumped against the tree, with only his socks and boots on.
"I heard a few grunts and groans. I called to him 'Are you okay, what's going on?'" the Sun quoted Griffiths as telling the inquest.
"There was quite a lot of dried blood on his arms. He had marks on the back of his head and he was quite dirty.
"I wrapped him in my coat to give him some dignity and eventually a police officer came and cut him down.
"As we put him down on the ground I noticed a small cord around the base of his penis," Griffiths stated.
Kirkland was rushed to the hospital but he died hours later.
Home Office pathologist Dr Alexander Kolar said Kirkland died of hypothermia and blood loss after cutting his wrists by accident while struggling to escape.
John Ellery, coroner for Telford and Wrekin, recorded a verdict of accidental death at the inquest last week.
"It is clear to me that having put himself in that position he could not get out of it," Ellery added. (ANI)

China landslide death toll Rises to 700,as crews in three countries across Asia

ZHOUQU, China – The death toll from landslides in northwestern China more than doubled Tuesday to 702, as crews in three countries across Asia struggled to reach survivors from flooding that has afflicted millions of people.
Rescuers digging by hand through mud found a 52-year old man who had been trapped for more than 50 hours inside a leveled apartment building in the remote town of Zhouqu, where local officials said more than 1,000 other people were still missing. Rescuers with sniffer dogs discovered the man, Liu Ma Shindan, who was in weak condition but breathing normally.
In Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari returned Tuesday to a storm of criticism for visiting Europe as his country was gripped by the worst floods in its history that have affected nearly 14 million people. His arrival came as thousands of people fled a major city in central Pakistan as rivers nearby swelled and threatened to submerge the area.
And rescuers in the desert mountainsides in Indian-controlled Kashmir recovered more bodies, with the death toll rising to 165 from flash floods. Thousands of army and paramilitary soldiers continued clearing roads and removing the debris of hundreds of homes flattened in the Ladakh region by Friday's powerful thunderstorms.
About 200 remained missing around Ladakh, said Lt. Col. J. S. Brar, an army spokesman. With the road links being restored, nearly 300 people who fled to higher ground have returned to their homes, he said.
The disaster in China's Gansu province struck when a debris-blocked swollen river burst, swamping entire mountain villages in the county seat of Zhouqu and ripping homes from their foundations.
Tian Baozhong, the director of civil affairs in Gansu province, said the death toll now stood at 702, up from 337 on Monday.
Another survivor, Yang Zhukai, began the sad task of making simple coffins for the 10 to 20 relatives killed by the mudslide.
"These are all for relatives, for relatives killed by the mudslide. It was so unexpected — a huge landslide like this. There's nothing left. We managed to escape with our lives. As far as relatives, 10 to 20 died from my village," he told Associated Press Television News.
Throughout the area, bodies were seen wrapped in blankets and tied to sticks or placed on planks and left on the shattered streets for pickup.
The ruling Communist Party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee met early Tuesday to discuss rescue and relief work, a move that will likely free up even more resources.
"It is now a critical time for disaster relief and rescue work. We must give the highest prominence to the protection of people's lives and properties," the committee said in a statement issued after the meeting.
The government said 1,042 were missing and about 45,000 were evacuated. It was not known how many of the missing were in danger or simply out of contact as workers rushed to restore communications in the area.
More rain is expected in the region over the next three days, the China Meteorological Administration said. Tents, blankets, food and water were all being rushed to the isolated area, creating traffic jams on the few roads in.
Flooding in China has killed about 1,800 people this year and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage across 28 provinces and regions.
In Pakistan, two weeks of flooding have killed 1,500. Amid the relentless rains, President Zardari — an unpopular figure to begin with — took off for a visit to France and Britain. His aides said he had to make the trip for diplomatic reasons, especially to Britain, whose Prime Minister David Cameron had recently accused Pakistan of exporting terrorism.
But the timing of trip struck a raw nerve among many who said Zardari should have stayed with his suffering people — even though the president, fearful of assassination, rarely makes public appearances in Pakistan anyway. The criticism was particularly harsh after reports that he'd visited his family's elegant chateau in France.
The widespread crisis has overwhelmed Pakistan's government and frustrated citizens who have complained about slow or nonexistent aid efforts.
The government estimates that 13.8 million people are affected by the floods. The figures include people who need short-term or long-term aid.
"The magnitude of the tragedy is so immense that it is hard to assess," said Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani during a visit to the central Pakistani city of Multan.
On Tuesday, people streamed out of Muzaffargarh, a major city of about 250,000 people in Punjab province, after authorities issued warnings using loudspeakers on mosques the previous evening. "There is chaos," said Mohammed Amir, a police official in the city.
In North Korea, some 10,000 people sheltered in public buildings in the border city of Sinuiju near China because of flooding, the Red Cross said. Flash floods destroyed thousands of homes across the impoverished country, and the Amnok River recorded its highest water level in 15 years, the Red Cross said.

Rihanna & Eminem Play with Fire in Shocking New Video
Tackling a subject she knows all too well, Rihanna takes on domestic violence by being featured in an Eminem video starring Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan as a couple stuck in a cycle of fighting, drinking, shoplifting and pyromania.
In the video, Rihanna, 22, sings outside a house that bursts into flames while a couple – Fox and Monaghan – alternately physically abuse and kiss each other. In a field of yellow grass, meanwhile, Eminem raps in his signature undershirt (yes, a "wifebeater").
As the song progresses, the couple go to a bar, play manipulative emotional games, beat the tar out of a rival for Fox's affections, steal booze, and then take the boxing match back to their home, which is one of several things that spontaneously combust, presumably a metaphor for the emotional trauma the characters are suffering.
"[Director] Joseph [Kahn] and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right," said Eminem, 37. "Trying to make this tough subject work visually is a challenge. It was great to have Rihanna, Megan and Dominic on board for this. They really brought it and made this video super-powerful."
Fox, 24, donated the money she would have received for the video to a Sojourn House, a shelter for abused women.

Court documents allege Fantasia Barrino had an affair with a married man and that the pair recorded their encounters.
(CNN) -- A North Carolina woman is alleging that "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino engaged in an affair with her husband, and says in court documents that the pair "recorded" their sexual encounters.
Paula Cook, who separated from her husband, Antwaun Cook, in June, filed the documents -- seeking child custody, alimony and other monetary support -- Wednesday in Mecklenburg County District Court.
The documents allege Antwaun Cook began the affair with Barrino, 26, in August 2009 after the pair met at a Charlotte-area T-Mobile store where Cook is employed.
Barrino -- the 2004 winner of the popular Fox show and an eight-time Grammy nominee -- treated Cook to a lavish lifestyle over the course of their affair, flying him to Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; New York; Los Angeles, California; and Barbados, the documents allege.
The pair "have at times recorded their illicit sexual activity," according to the documents.
A month after Paula Cook separated from her husband, Barrino is alleged to have interrupted a phone conversation between the estranged couple, telling Cook, "He don't want you. Maybe the next time you get a husband you'll know how to keep him. That's why he is here with me," according to the documents.
Barrino has appeared publicly with a tattoo on her left shoulder reading "Cook," an apparent tribute to Antwaun Cook, who is said to have a similar tattoo in the same place on his shoulder, according to the documents.
The alleged affair was first reported in November by gossip magazines and websites.
Barrino and her record label Sony Music declined to comment on the documents Sunday.
Paula Cook says that as a result of the affair, her husband became more and more withdrawn from their marriage, attributing late nights and other absences to work, the documents say.
"As [Paula Cook] contemplated ways to save her marriage and family, [Antwaun Cook] and Ms. Barrino continued to enjoy their open and notorious relationship without her knowledge and/or consent," the documents say.
Paula Cook is seeking custody of her two children, ages 6 and 2, with Antwaun Cook, as well as child support, alimony, attorney's fees and ownership of the couple's former marital home.

Rescue teams in China pull a man alive from his wrecked home
Beijing, China (CNN) -- The death toll from mudslides in northwestern China rose to 702, state-run media reported Tuesday.
There were 1,042 people missing in Zhouqu County, Gansu province, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The landslides happened early Sunday after heavy rains hit the area, authorities said.
The side of a mountain broke off in the middle of the night and slid through a town in Zhouqu, covering homes and ripping others apart.
The path of the mudslide is now covered in three and four stories of rock and mud.
Members of the Chinese military, wearing green camouflage, were working in teams throughout the town, digging with their bare hands to find anyone trapped below.
The effort made for some dramatic rescues like the one in Zhouqu County where workers pulled a survivor from the wreckage of his home Tuesday, three days after he was buried in mudslides.
Chen Jianhua, an official in Zhouqu, said 218 injured survivors had been treated at local hospitals, and 41 severely injured survivors had been transferred for treatment in the provincial capital of Lanzhou, according to Xinhua.
On Sunday Premier Wen Jiabao and other government officials arrived at the mountainous region to survey the damage, according to Xinhua.
Wen also insisted that electricity be restored and traffic resumed in Zhouqu County as soon as possible.

Two days after a container ship smashed into another vessel and ran aground off India's coast near Mumbai, the container ship was still listing heavily Monday, the Associated Press reported. Officials were concerned about the environmental impact of oil leaks, according to AFP, which said 33 crew members were rescued.
One police officer fell off a patrolling speedboat and drowned, however, because neither the officer nor colleagues knew how to swim, a police spokesman told AFP.

Iran has dug mass graves in which to bury U.S. troops in case of any American attack on the country,
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran has dug mass graves in which to bury U.S. troops in case of any American attack on the country, a former commander of the elite Revolutionary Guard said.
The digging of the graves appears to be a show of bravado after the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, said last week that the U.S. military has a contingency plan to attack Iran, although he thinks a military strike is probably a bad idea.
The U.S. and some of its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to build nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its nuclear program is geared merely toward generating electricity, not bomb.
Gen. Hossein Kan'ani Moghadam, who was the Guard's deputy commander during the 1980s, said graves have been dug in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province, where Iran buried Iraqi soldiers killed during the ruinous 1980-88 war between the Islamic republic and Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime.
"The mass graves that used to be for burying Saddam's soldiers have now been prepared again for U.S. soldiers, and this is the reason for digging this big number of graves," Moghadam told The Associated Press Television News late Monday. He did not say how many were prepared.
Footage obtained by APTN showed a large number of empty, freshly dug graves in a desert region of Khuzestan. The digging of the graves was first reported earlier this week by Iran's semiofficial news agency Fars.
Moghadam repeated warnings that Iran will retaliate against U.S. bases in the Gulf if there is an attack on Iran. The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters is based just across the Gulf from Iran in Bahrain.
If U.S. forces attack, "Iran will have no choice but to strike the American bases in the region," he said. "The heavy costs of such a war will not be just on the Islamic Republic of Iran. America and other countries should accept that this would be the start of an extensive war in the region."
The war of words has intensified between Iran and the United States after the U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth round of tougher sanctions in June in response to Iran's refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used to produce nuclear fuel or material for an atomic bomb.
The U.S. and Israel have said military force could be used if diplomacy fails to stop what they suspect is an Iranian nuclear weapons program.
(This version corrects that Moghadam is a former Guard commander, not a current one, and spoke to APTN, instead of Fars.)
a powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation and generated a small tsunami on Tuesday.
Panicked residents of Vanuatu raced for higher ground after a powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation and generated a small tsunami on Tuesday.
The 9-inch (22 centimeter) wave was observed off the capital Port Vila, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Police said there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries from the wave or the 7.5 magnitude quake that preceded it, though buildings shook and power lines were down.
“It was quite a significant earthquake, and we’re still having a few aftershocks,” Ben McKenzie of the New Zealand High Commission told The Associated Press by phone from Port Vila.
The quake hit about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Port Vila at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers), the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Police spokesman John Frat told the AP that officials had not received any reports of injuries or major damage, but described the temblor as “a very sharp quake — it was the worst I have felt in my life.”
“Many people left the center of town and went to higher places, fearing a tsunami,” he said by telephone from Port Vila. “We’re still experiencing sharp aftershocks and all communications were lost for a time, but things are coming back to normal now.”
The four-story office building housing the New Zealand High Commission suffered some damage, said McKenzie, first secretary at the New Zealand diplomatic post. Office shelves and ceiling tiles fell down and computers were “thrown across the office” by the jolt, he said.
“We’re trying to ensure everybody is safe and we’re evacuating the building” to check that it’s not “structurally damaged,” he said.
Joel Pari, a worker at Port Vila’s Trading Post newspaper, said they had not heard any reports of injury or major damage following the quake.
“But it was really strong — it really shook the buildings and everybody fled outside and to higher ground in case of a tsunami,” he said.
Roland Cowles, manager of Sunset Bungalows waterfront resort at Port Vila, said his wife Jenny suffered minor cuts as she fled a supermarket.
“For a good 10 seconds, you almost couldn’t walk — it was throwing you around that much and people in the supermarket had to be evacuated because of all of the damage that was being done,” he told Ten Network television news in Australia by telephone.

Fantasia Barrino with Antwaun Cook Sex Scandal Video, Download Free Video
Fantasia’s sex tape story seems to be starting out very similar to how the other sex tapes were introduced into public, except this time it is a wife making the accusations.
According to Us Magazine, Fantasia Barrino, an American Idol winner, is implicated in a divorce as the “other woman”. The wife. who is accusing Fantasia of sleeping with her husband, Antwaun Cook, is also saying they recording their romps on a sex tape.
Recent B list stars have boosted their bank accounts with the releasing of a sex tape that either their “old boyfriend released behind their back”, or “they weren’t aware of being taped”. The only one who has come right out and said she has a sex tape and wants to be a porno star is Montana Fishburne. The rest of the semi famous gals have all had a story about the “appearance of a sex tape”.
Fantasia rode high on her American Idol win, but she has not been in the headlines for some time now and seems to be fading into American Idol retirement club. Now a sex tape would turn this around and Fantasia could get at least another 15 minutes of fame out of this deal.
This is purely speculation, but it just has a ring to it that seems to a story that could precede the announcing of a sex tape. There might be no such thing as Fantasia in a sex tape, and this could really be the cry of a scorned wife, but what if……well, what if it is another great marketing strategy like Kendra Wilkinson presented with her sex tape being released.
Kendra was going to fight the release of her sex tape with a legal team, when it was discovered that it was really Kendra doing the selling of her own tape.
Fantasia is a little different than Kendra, who was in the Playboy mansion and part of a light sex industry with her image in Playboy. Fantasia has a history of being more of a goody two shoes, (not meant as an insult) than the rest of the women who have starred in a sex tape.
Fantasia’s manager addressed the “breaking up a marriage” charges today but did not touch on the sex tape rumor. Brian Dickens tells Us Magazine that Fantasia is in no way responsible for the breaking up of the Cook marriage.
The sex tape may or may not exist, only time will tell as this story unravels.
“It is hard to believe that Fantasia would participate in a sex tape”, said one Connecticut American Idol fan. “Fantasia was religious and family oriented when on the Idol, so this seems far fetched for her character”, said another Connecticut fan of Fantasia’s.
