Lourdes French English Film Plot:
In order to escape her isolation, wheelchair-bound Christine makes a life changing journey to Lourdes, the iconic site of pilgrimage in the Pyrenees Mountains
Lourdes Italian German Movie reviews :
One of the film's I'd hoped would make the local festival circuit is Jessica Hausner's Lourdes. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival to very positive reviews and has just picked up another accolade, top honours at the Seville Film Festival.
A low-key comedy which approaches questions of faith through the eyes of a demoralized skeptic, the film stars Sylvie Testud as Christine, a wheelchair bound woman who makes her way to Lourdes. Unlike her companions (she's there on a religious pilgrimage) Christine isn't interested in a miracle cure instead, she's simply interested in finding company and friendship.
I can’t imagine how a film (a comedy at that!) that digs deep and questions ideas of miracles,
shrines and religion can do so without coming across as either too fluffy or simply mean but by all accounts, Hausner manages to find a balance that works and judging from the various awards, a formula that works with great success.

Irytuje to surową, skrywającą pewną tajemnicę, siostrę przełożoną Cecile (Elina Lowensohn). Przystojny mężczyzna zwraca też uwagę Christine.

Terribly Happy Danish Synopsis :
The official Danish selection for this year’s Academy Awards and winner of 7 Robert Awards (Danish Oscars) including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay, TERRIBLY HAPPY spins a riveting yarn about Robert Hanson (Jakob Cedergren), a Copenhagen police officer who, following a nervous breakdown, is transferred to a small provincial town to take on the mysteriously vacated marshal position and subsequently gets mixed up with a married femme fatale. Robert’s big city temperament makes it impossible for him to fit in, or understand the uncivilized, bizarre behavior displayed by the townspeople. Quickly spiraling into an intense fable, director Henrik Ruben Genz displays a unique and sometimes macabre vision of the darkest depths to which people will go to achieve a sense of security and belonging.

Denmark Movie Terribly Happy Reviews :
Terribly Happy is a stylish Danish noir based on actual events. It's a classic "fish out of water" story. Robert (Jakob Cedergren ),a police officer is sent from Copenhagen to a small Danish village as its new Marshall. He soon finds that the village people have their own set of rules and laws and are not ready to accept outside interference with their coda of justice. Although at first Robert tries to play everything by the book, he is soon drawn deeply into the villagers' web of deceit and corruption.
The director Henrik Ruben Genz creates a very bleak atmosphere set against the Danish countryside. The film is full of black humor, reminiscent of Coen Brothers, specially Fargo. The casting is particularly good, with Kim Bodnia outstanding as a wife beating lout. Terribly Happy is tightly directed and is gripping from start to finish. Recommended.
I recently saw this at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival. from writer/director Henrik Ruben Genze based on the novel by Erling Jepsen is a dark and quirky crime story set in a small rural Danish village where everybody knows everything about everyone and they live and die by their own unique code of justice. Robert (Jakob Cedergren) is a cop from the city who has been reassigned as the town marshall because of a mental breakdown he suffered and he has to stay in the demotion until he can work his way back onto the force back in the the city. He immediately discovers the odd and unwelcome clannish ways of border town community and meets Ingerlise (Lena Maria Christiansen), the abused wife of the town bully Jorgen (Kim Bodnia). This is a psychological thriller with suspense and dark comedy woven together in a story that is almost Stephen King-like. The moody cinematography from Jorgen Johansson is excellent and the film moves at a slow pace but never drags down and keeps your interest throughout. I would give this an 8.5 out of 10 and recommend it.

Synopsis:

Reviews:
Aiming to do what Das Boot did in capturing WWII from the point of view from the confines of a submarine, Samuel Maoz's debut feature film, which recently captured the Golden Lion at Venice, aims to view the opening days of the 1982 Lebanese-Israeli war from the cramped interior of a tank. To amp up the visceral aspect of the film, things never leave the tank and all outside action is viewed through the scopes and viewports of the iron beast. The exception to this is a handsome opening shot of drooping Sunflowers in an open, sunny field; stark contrast to crucible of sweat, fear and metal that this location will prove to be.

The crew consist of the commanding officer, the driver, the shooter an the shell-loader. They are more like a casual construction crew than a soldiering outfit, mainly just driving around and positioning their intimidating hardware. But when the war begins and they have to begin shelling cars, buildings and people, there is confusion, insubordiation and mainly pure unvarnished fear. The slogan on the inside of the tank may read "Man is Steel, the Tank is only Iron." But these men are far from it. Amist the barking radio orders (and occasional visits at the hatch) of the mission officer, these men hesitate and agonize.
Maoz based his screenplay on his own fears and reactions to the initial days of the war, and uses the tank as a big blunt metaphor for situation. Awkward, clumsey, operating without working dials, traumatized from shells an rockets aimed at it, yet continuing to lumber on through the wreckage. Nearly everything seen outside, from soldiers (Israeli friendlies and PLO terrorists) and vehicles, to innocents and apartment buildings are viewed with a gigantic crosshair in the frame. Inside the tank is inside these young soldiers head, slow to respond to the chain of command and occasionally bursting with anger and rage at the situation. The shooter, Yigal, becomes the primary character, as the most difficult thing to do is pull the trigger, his is the all seeing eye that gets a close up and accurate view of the immediate chaos and carnate of urban battle.
The film does not achieve the scope or grand scale of Das Boot, rather being a very intimate and small and focused. It is surpisingly accessible in terms of image and underlying meaning, to the point where it is quite surprising that it won the big prize at Venice, it nonetheless is an intense and visceral experience. It gets beyond its 'gimmick' only through the quality of the actors (a story of sexual release as a balm for grief is a standout monologue) and offers as close of a 'ride' as anyone is going to get in a tank (or in the mind) in engagement.Did you have to cut a great trailer to get into this year’s Venice Film Festival? Neither the mesmerizing trailer for “A Single Man” nor this intense trailer for the Israeli film “Lebanon”, winner of the Venice Film Festival’s prestigious Golden Lion (a.k.a. the best film of the festival), have a word of English. You may not understand what “A Single Man” is about but you’ll want to find out. Judging only from the trailer, “Lebanon” is about three Israeli soldiers in a tank watching the war in Lebanon through the scope on their vehicle. Looking at the official logline, I was close. The film is about not three but four Israeli trapped in a tank deep in enemy territory during the Lebanon War. It’s also autobiographical but I never would have figured that one out. But I came close and I don’t understand a word of Hebrew which is a great credit to the trailer but it does make my ancestors very, very sad.

“Lebanon” currently has no U.S. release date although it will play during this year’s New York Film Festival. I wouldn’t be surprised if Israel made the film their submission to the Academy in the Best Foreign Film category. Hit the jump to see the trailer and require no subtitles.

Full Synopsis
Director Joann Sfar's biopic Serge Gainsbourg, vie héroïque recounts the colorful life story of French chanteur and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, known as much for his hugely outrageous antics in public as he was for his taboo-busting, often hilarious song lyrics and orchestrations. Eric Elmosino stars as the lead, while the late, tragic actress Lucy Gordon (Spider-Man 3) co-stars asGainsbourg's third wife, the actress-model Jane Birkin. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Movie Plot Summary:
A wildly creative take on the life of notorious French composer, lyricist and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, Gainsbourg (vie heroique) is splendidly cast and consistently engaging. Prolific cartoonist Sfar’s first feature as writer/director skillfully melds Gainsbourg’s uppity inner child, self-destructive behaviour and prodigious talent with a rousing approach to the societal weight of being — and looking — Jewish.
Sfar makes the gutsy decision to give the boy an enormous alter ego called La Gueule (or Ugly Face), a sort of giant talking potato with legs which lumbers after him
With excellent music, rebellious energy and beautiful naked women to spare, little would seem to stand in the way of the film’s success except, perhaps, misguided indifference towards its subject. Eric Elmosnino’s incarnation of the chain-smoking iconoclast who died in 1991 at the age of 62 is uncanny.
Heavy on imagined elements as well as documented highlights, Sfar’s film boasts a Euros 16m budget ($23.1m) - substantial for a French first feature – which is all on screen and in the soundtrack. With sales to some 30 countries, including Optimum in the UK, Prokino in Germany and Hopscotch in Australia,Gainsbourg (vie heroique) is still awaiting a US deal in the one territory where Gainsbourg is little-known.
Young Serge (Kacey Mottet-Klein) is depicted as a compulsive artist and illustrator who yearns to be a great painter. An irreverent whippersnapper in Occupied France, he is seen contacting Nazi officials to insist on a yellow star of his own. Whether this actually happened or not, it’s a fine way to establish thatGainsbourg can’t resist flaunting authority and is congenitally incapable of playing it safe - qualities that would distinguish his music, from the simulated female orgasm of steamy ditty Je t’aime…moi non plus to his scandalous reggae version of the French national anthem.
Saddled with a hooked nose and prominent ears and painfully aware of his own unattractiveness, adolescent Serge quickly perfected a knack for talking to women, starting with the nude model in his life drawing class. Sfar makes the gutsy decision to give the boy an enormous, clingy alter ego, La Gueule or Ugly Face, a sort of giant talking potato with legs which lumbers after him. Twenty minutes in, Elmosnino takes over as the adultGainsbourg and Ugly Face grows into a lanky, more elegant sidekick with preying mantis type limbs and a lengthy beak. (Doug Jones is excellent inside the mask and costume.)
The film assumes that viewers can identify key figures in French pop culture circles including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta), France Gall (Sara Forestier) and Jane Birkin (the late Lucy Gordon, who killed herself in the summer of 2009 and to whom the film is dedicated). Gordon captures Birkin’s breathy delivery and breaking glass singing voice while a pulpy, uninhibited Casta is a delight as Bardot, who recorded several indelible hits and starred with Gainsbourg in iconic clips to illustrate them.
As Gainsbourg abandons painting, finds success as a songwriter and profits from the freewheeling societal changes of the 1960s, falling for Bardot and Birkin along the way, he continues to be dogged by Ugly Face and the nagging hurts he represents. While the film never completely loses steam, it feels far heavier toward the end becauseGainsbourg himself grew increasingly dissolute.
Production design spanning the 1940s through the ’80s, has the ring of truth and Guillaume Schiffman’s photography is a major plus. Nearly every scene is bathed in smoke, but leaving out the cigarettes would be like making Sid And Nancy without any drugs.
Sfar has an animated feature based on his multi-volume hard-backed comic The Rabbi’s Cat due this summer but this debut alone gives him immediate credibility as a director.

Vorstadtkrokodile 2 Germany Movie Review:
Inhalt • VORSTADTKROKODILE 2
