The lineup for the UEFA Women's Champions League knockout phase is complete and begins with the draws for the rounds of 32 and 16 at 14.00CET on Thursday 19 August in Nyon.

Last season's finalists Lyon and Potsdam enter in the round of 32

Nine teams progressed from the qualifying round to join the champions of the 23 top-ranked nations in the last 32, which will be played on 22/23 September and 13/14 October. Among the teams entering the competition at this stage are holders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, last season's beaten finalists Olympique Lyonnais, former champions Arsenal LFC and past runners-up Zvezda-2005 and Fortuna Hjørring.

The nine sides who progressed from the first stage include seven of the eight clubs entering as national runners-up, led by 2008 winners FCR 2001 Duisburg. Slovenian titleholders ŽNK Krka also advanced along with Cypriot club Apollon Limassol LFC, who were in the bottom tier of seeds for the qualifying round draw but knocked out two-time champions Umeå IK.

The 32 clubs have been split into two seeding pots for the draw, with the ties all containing one team from each, though sides from the same association cannot meet. There will then be an open draw for the round of 16 played in November. The two-legged quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place in spring and the one-off final will be played in London on Thursday 26 May.

Iran tells West to stay out of woman’s stoning case

Iranian lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei, left, answers reporters’ questions at a press conference in Oslo, Norway. Mostafaei has applied for political asylum in Norway after he was released from a detention center in Istanbul. Mostafaei fled Iran for Turkey after defending his client, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was convicted of cheating on her husband and sentenced to death by stoning in Iran. Tehran says it will not carry out the stoning against Ashtiani for the time being, but the mother of two could still face execution by hanging. –Photo by AP

TEHRAN: Iran told Western nations on Tuesday to stay out of the case of a woman who faces death by stoning, warning it will not tolerate any interference in the matter still under examination.

“Independent nations do not allow other countries to interfere in their judicial affairs,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a news conference.

The official was responding to questions from reporters about the status of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two sentenced to death by stoning by an Iranian court.

“Western nations must not pressurise and hype it (the case) up... judicial cases have precise procedures, especially when it concerns murder.

“If a person committed a crime in Iran, that person is prosecuted which is normal, especially if she has killed somebody. The heavier the sentence, the more meticulous we are in carrying it out. This is being done,” said Mehmanparast.

Western nations and human rights groups have come out strongly against Mohammadi-Ashtiani’s stoning sentence and warned that her execution is imminent.

Iranian judiciary chief Sadeq Larijani has temporarily suspended the sentence from being carried out.

Officials in the Islamic republic maintain the woman was handed the stoning sentence for adultery and for being an accomplice in her husband’s murder.

Her lawyers and London-based rights watchdog Amnesty International say she was only sentenced for having an “illicit relationship” with two men and that the murder charge was adopted later.

Mehmanparast said the outcry from the West over her case was “irrational” and “rather a politicised approach”.

“If we are to free those who committed murders, there won’t be any security. If this is the case, we can also demand that they free all those who have committed murders and serious crimes,” he said.

When asked about Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s proposal to offer Mohammadi-Ashtiani asylum, he said Brazil would come to “understand it is a fuss created to undermine relations” between the two countries.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad echoed similar views in an interview on Iran’s English-language Press TV broadcast on Sunday.

The hardliner said Iran’s judiciary chief agreed Mohammadi-Ashtiani should not be sent to Brazil.

“I think there is no need to create some trouble for President Lula and to send her to Brazil. We are keen to export our technology to Brazil rather than such people. I think the problem will be solved” in Iran, Ahmadinejad said in comments posted on the channel’s website. —AFP

Baghdad suicide bomb hits army recruits, kills 61
12:18 AM PST | Wed, 18 Aug, 2010 | Ramazan 07, 1431

BAGHDAD: A suicide bomber sat for hours Tuesday among hundreds of army recruits before detonating nail-packed explosives strapped to his body, killing 61 people and casting new doubt on the ability of Iraqi forces as US troops head home.

Bodies of bloodied young men, some still clutching job applications in their hands, were scattered on the ground outside the military headquarters in central Baghdad. Some of the estimated 1,000 men who had gathered there before dawn for a good spot in line were so desperate for work they returned hours after being treated at hospitals for injuries in the attack.

Though Iraq’s military and police recruiting centers have been attacked repeatedly, there was virtually no security provided for the hundreds of men seeking to hand in applications on the last day they were being accepted at the headquarters for the Iraqi army's 11th Division.

The bomber, it appears, simply walked up and joined the applicants. Witnesses said he approached an officer collecting I.D. cards and set off a blast that split his own body in two.

“Severed hands and legs were falling over me. I was soaked with blood from the body parts and wounded and dead people falling over and beside me,” said Yasir Ali, who had been waiting outside the military headquarters since 4 am.

It was one of the bloodiest bombings in months in the Iraqi capital and was an embarrassment for Iraq’s military as it tries to reassure the nation it can fill the gap left by America's departing military. At the end of this month, US troops will number just 50,000 and will be involved only in limited combat operations.

“We couldn’t get another place for the recruits,” said Iraqi military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, explaining why the army used an open and unprotected site in central Baghdad’s Maidan Square to gather the recruits.

“It was difficult to control the area because it’s an open area and because of the large number of recruits,” he said.

He blamed al-Qaeda in Iraq for the attack.

Tuesday’s blast took place around 7:30 am outside the former Ministry of Defense building, which now houses the army’s 11th division headquarters.

The location normally receives about 250 new recruits each week, but numbers swelled Tuesday because of the deadline for applications.
Iraqi security forces have been trying to boost their numbers as the US military leaves the country after seven years of war. Whether Iraqi forces are ready is being hotly debated by American and Iraqi officials.

Iraq’s military commander, Gen. Babaker Shawkat Zebari, acknowledged last week that his army may not be ready to defend the nation until 2020.

Recognizing the weaknesses, insurgents have intensified attacks on Iraqi army, police and other security forces in recent weeks.

At least two recruits who witnessed Tuesday's attack raised the possibility that a car had also exploded at the scene, which could account for the high death toll. But al-Moussawi blamed the deaths on a single suicide bomber.

“We were sitting there, and somebody began shouting about a parked car,” said one of the recruits, Ali Ibrahim, 21, who suffered minor shrapnel wounds.

Officials at four Baghdad hospitals confirmed the death toll of 61 and said 125 others were injured. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Al-Moussawi, the military spokesman, put the casualty count at 39 killed and 57 wounded. Varying casualty counts are common in the confusion after attacks.

This summer in particular has seen a spike in violence in Iraq. Data from the Iraqi defense, interior and ministry officials show that July marked the bloodiest month since May 2008, with more than 500 killed, although tallies compiled by The Associated Press and the US military were lower.

In a similar attack last month, a suicide bomber ripped through a line of anti-al-Qaeda Sunni fighters waiting to collect their paychecks near an Iraqi military base, killing 45 people in the mostly Sunni district of Radwaniya southwest of Baghdad.

August, which saw the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, has also been deadly.

Two bombs that set off a power generator and ignited a fuel tank on Aug. 7. killed 43 people in a downtown market in Basra, Iraq’s second-largest city. – AP

Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Germany will represent Europe in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago from 5 to 25 September.

World Cup trip for trio

The top three at the European finals – Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Germany – will play at September's FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.

Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Germany will represent Europe in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago from 5 to 25 September.

UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship winners Spain and runners-up Ireland had sealed their places before meeting in Saturday's decider in Nyon, Germany completing the lineup when they defeated the Netherlands 3-0 in the third-place play-off.

Germany, third in the inaugural event in New Zealand in 2008, will be in Group B with Mexico, Korea Republic and South Africa. They will hope the 2004 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup proves an omen, as won having surprisingly missed out on that year's UEFA European Women's U19 Championship title, won by Spain.

Coach Ralf Peter, who also led Germany in 2008, told UEFA.com: "The World Cup is a special event: 16 teams from all over the world; the best teams in the world. New Zealand in 2008 was a great experience for our young girls and we came third and now we have to prepare and work hard for September."

New Zealand, Venezuela and Japan will be Spain's Group C opponents and coach Jorge Vilda said: "We will start preparing for the World Cup in the middle of July – we are not treating it as a trip to the Caribbean but as a further goal for this team to try to achieve."

Ireland, in their first Women's World Cup at any level, go into Group D with Brazil, Canada and Ghana. Manager Noel King said: "We go to Trinidad after six wins and two draws but we know we have to be better. We know we will improve and this is not the end for this team but the beginning. We need to do more when we have the ball but we know that, we need to be a little more creative when we have possession that and we'll work on that."

Group A contains both hosts Trinidad and Tobago – coached by Even Pellerud, who led Norway to the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup – and holders Korea DPR. The top two from each group go into the quarter-finals.

Jenas injured his calf and will have to sit out the trip to Switzerland due to the strain, while King continues to grapple with his persistent knee troubles and also remained behind in London. Young Boys Bern also play on an artificial pitch which Redknapp has already accused of posing an injury hazard to his players.

Spurs will continue to be without long term casualties David Bentley, Jamie O’Hara and Jonathan Woodgate who have been sidelined with ankle, back and groin injuries respectively.

The Swiss side will likely have to give a late fitness test to English defender Scott Sutter, who is a Spurs fan and was hoping to be involved in what would be a dream tie for him, playing against the club he supported since childhood days. Sutter is now most likely to be fit only for the second leg in a week’s time but it would be a memorable return to White Hart Lane for the player.
Spurs have never played in Europe’s premier competition since losing to Real Madrid in the 1962 European Cup semi-finals.

The Spurs starting lineup will consist of a selection from the following squad that travelled to Bern: Gomes, Cudicini, Hutton, Bale, Kaboul, Naughton, Bassong, Dawson, Corluka, Assou-Ekotto, Walker, Huddlestone, Rose, Lennon, Palacios, Modric, Kranjcar, Pavlyuchenko, Keane, Crouch, Dos Santos, Defoe.

As predicted last week, director Christopher Nolan's Inception was finally knocked out of the top spot after almost a month by newcomers The Other Guys. But with three highly anticipated new movies entering the box office this weekend including the testosterone-filled action movie The Expendables, the comic book based rock-opera Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and the Julia Roberts-vehicle Eat, Pray, Love, which is based on the popular book, it was inevitable that the buddy-cop comedy would fall after only a week on top of the charts.

Debuting at number one this week is the new action film The Expendables from writer/director and star Sylvester Stallone. Besides Stallone, the film stars an array of the toughest action stars from several different decades including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film opened on 3,270 screens and earned about $10,713 on each for an opening weekend total of $35 million. That's not bad considering the films $82 million production budget.

Debuting at number two is Eat, Pray, Love directed by Ryan Murphy (Glee) and based on the internationally popular novel by author Elizabeth Gilbert. The film stars Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem, as well as Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, Golden Globe winner James Franco and Billy Crudup. The film opened on 3,082 screens and earned about $7,690 on each for an opening weekend total of $23.7 million. That's not bad considering the film's $60 million production budget.

Falling two places from last week to number three is buddy-cop action/comedy film The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes. While the film dropped 49.4% from the previous week and it still managed to earn roughly $4,930 in each of its 3,651 theaters for a weekend total of $18 million. Now in just two weeks the film has earned $70.5 million, which puts it close to making back its entire $85 million production budget.

Falling two places from last week in fourth place is Inception, the extremely popular sci-fi action thriller from director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). The film stars an incredible cast of actors including Oscar nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Ken Watanabe, Oscar winners Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Lukas Haas. While the film dropped 38.6% from the previous week and was seen on 298 less screens, it still managed to earn roughly $3,644 in each of its 3,120 theaters for a weekend total of $11.3 million. Now in just five weeks the film has earned $248.5 million, which surpasses its purported $160 million production budget.

Rounding out the top five this week is the much anticipated new film, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World from Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright based on the popular series of comic books from author Bryan Lee O'Malley. The film stars a who's who of popular young actors including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Alison Pill, Satya Bhabha, Ellen Wong and Jason Schwartzman. The film opened on 2,818 screens and earned about $3,735 on each for an opening weekend total of $10.5 million. But the film will need to stay strong in the next few weeks if it wants to earn back its purported $䏐-90 million production budget.

Doing well again this week in limited release is the new independent film from acclaimed filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) entitled The Kids Are All Right. The film is about a happy lesbian couple raising two teen-age kids who finally decide that they would like to meet their biological father. The movie stars a fantastic cast of critically acclaimed actors including Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland). The film earned $1,641 on each of its 830 screens for a weekend total of around $1.3 million. The movie has now earned $16.7 million in six weeks of release, far surpassing its $4 million production cost.

Also continuing to do well in limited release this week, thanks to great reviews and Oscar worthy performances from it's leads, is the new independent drama Get Low starring Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek and Oscar nominee Bill Murray. The film added 27 theaters this week and rose an impressive 76.8% from its debut last week. It earned $1,188 on each of its 53 screens for a weekend total of $387,400. The film has now earned $836,000 in just three weeks and if it continues to have good word-of-mouth as it opens in more cities it could end up earning back its $7 million production cost.

Next week will see the opening of four new films in wide release.

First up next week is Piranha 3D, the remake of the classic John Sayles written, Joe Dante directed horror film from the '1970s. The film stars Adam Scott, Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Jerry O'Connell, Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss.

Also opening in wide release next week is Nanny McPhee Returns, the sequel to the 2005 hit family film written and starring Emma Thompson. The follow-up features an all-star cast of actors including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Rhys Ifans and Ewan McGregor.

Next will also see the release of Lottery Ticket, a new comedy starring Bow Wow, Brandon T. Jackson, Naturi Naughton, Keith David, Terry Crews, Mike Epps and Ice Cube.

Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have been cast in the lead roles of Columbia Pictures' three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy under the direction of David Fincher. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - the first film of the series, which also includes The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - begins shooting next month in Sweden. The screenplay is written by Steven Zaillian and the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Ceán Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Faurbye Fernandez are executive producers. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.

The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far. In the U.S. alone, the series has sold over 10 million copies, and the sales were recently calculated at the remarkable rate of one book per second. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has broken sales records in virtually every country in which it has been published. It has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. and has out-sold any other e-book in that rapidly expanding market. A literary phenomenon, all three books currently sit atop the New York Times Best Seller lists.

In describing the scale of Larsson's achievement, The Economist said: "Stieg Larsson's vivid characters, the depth of the detail across the three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of its genre." Michiko Kakutani, of The New York Times, described the Lisbeth character: "Lisbeth Salander, Stieg Larsson's fierce pixie of a heroine, is one of the most original characters in a thriller to come along in a while - a gamin, Audrey Hepburn look-alike but with tattoos and piercings, the take-no-prisoners attitude of Lara Croft and the cool, unsentimental intellect of Mr. Spock. She is the vulnerable victim turned vigilante; a willfully antisocial girl . . . who has proved herself to be as incandescently proficient as any video game warrior." The three novels have all become #1 worldwide bestsellers, an achievement unrivaled in trade book publishing.

David Fincher most recently directed this fall's much-anticipated The Social Network for Columbia Pictures, which opens in the U.S. on October 1st.

Daniel Craig recently starred in the two highest-grossing films in the James Bond franchise, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale. His earlier film roles include Munich, Enduring Love, Layer Cake, The Mother, Road To Perdition, and Some Voices. He has also recently completed filming on Jim Sheridan's Dream House, Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, and Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens.

Rooney Mara will appear this fall in David Fincher's The Social Network.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo comes to theaters December 12th, 2011 and stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård. The film is directed by David Fincher.

    Plot Synopsis:
by Mark Deming: A daring band of rebels takes on Nazi forces in Europe in this wartime drama from director Robert Guédiguian. Born in Armenia, Missak Manouchian (Simon Abkarian) had settled in France by the time World War II broke out; a Socialist who stood in fierce opposition to the Axis forces occupying his country, he and a handful of other leftists formed the FTP-MOI, a faction of the French Resistance comprised of immigrants who came to France before the war. Working beside Manouchian was his wife, Mélinée (Virginie Ledoyen), a poet-turned-underground fighter; Marcel (Robinson Stévenin), a Jewish volunteer who is an excellent shot with a rifle; and Thomas (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), a passionate Marxist with a skill for making bombs. Along with several other activists, the FTP-MOI wage a propaganda campaign against the Nazis while targeting selected Axis leaders for execution. But despite their cunning and talent, Manouchian and his partners find it difficult to keep their work a secret, and in time they're found out by a ruthless detective (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) with the Vichy police. L'Armée du Crime (aka The Army of Crime) was based on the true story of a French resistance group dubbed "the Army of Crime" in Vichy propaganda pieces.
