RGV-Puri launch Vareva trailer Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 16:53 [IST]
The trailers of Gautham and Sambhavi starrer Vareva was launched recently. Noted directors Ram Gopal Varma and Puri Jagannath unveiled the trailers.
Varma says,"I share a good relationship with Brahmanandam. During Aha Naa Pellanta shoot, I used to go to the shooting spots in search of opportunities. We have god attachment with Brahmanandam from the day of Money. Now, we are working again in Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalaraju." He also wished Vareva team a good luck.
Puri Jagannath says,"The title is very attractive and Gautham looks good in trailers."
Brahmanandam says,"One would shine only with individual talent. I hope Gautham would prove his talent."
Sreenu Vaitla says,"I have just seen a part of the film. Gautham has given a good performance."
The producer-director Kalyan Manthena says," Mahesh Shankar has composed the music, We will soon launch the audio."
Ravi's Mallikarjuna completes first schedule of shooting Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 16:26 [IST]
Saiprakash directed Kannada movie Mallikarjuna has completed the first schedule of shooting. The movie performed its puja in July in a temple. Crazy Star Ravichandran is the lead actor in this movie, which has two leading ladies, as Ravichandran plays double role in the film. The film is a remake of the Tamil movie Thavasi. Dinesh Gandhi is the producer, who has earlier produced the Kannada movie Hoo. Camera has been handled by Seetharam the music is composed by SA Raj Kumar.
The fast speeding films have now become a fashion in Sandalwood. The Ravichandran starrer Nariya Seere Kadda has been completed in less than 40 days. Again, Dinesh Babu and Ramesh Aravind have also completed shooting within a period of less than 15 days and the director Saiprakash of Mallikarjuna is also following the latest trend.
The filmmakers have planned this strategy to cut the expenditure by competing the shooting in quick span. They are avoiding shooting for 50 to 100 days as it used to be earlier. They try to finish the shooting of even top star movies within 40 days, which in turn saves the grace of the producers.
Director Saiprakash erected a huge grand house set for Mallikarjuna. Cameraman Seetharam has already captured some of the indoor as well as outdoor scenes, which also includes some action scenes. Like the first schedule, hope the director shoots the complete movie also in a very short time period!
Elsamma Ennaaankutty is all set for release Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 16:07 [IST]
The post production works of the Malayalam feature film Elsamma Ennaaankutty, directed by Lal Jose and produced by M. Ranjith under the banner of Rajaputra Visual Media, has been completed and is ready for release this Friday, 10th September.
The film has Ann Augustine, daughter of well known Malayalam actor Augustine, playing the title role. It features Kunchacko Boban and Indrajit in the male leads. Actors like Nedumudi Venu, Jenardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, KPAC Lalitha, Suraj Venjaramood and others also play vital roles in the film.

The Cold Light of Day Begins Principal Photography September 7th, 2010
Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver will join Henry Cavill in Summit Entertainment and Intrepid Pictures' action thriller The Cold Light of Day. Principal photography commenced on September 6th and will continue through November 13th.
The Cold Light of Day, set and filmed entirely in Spain, will be shot over ten weeks in the Community of Valencia and Madrid as well as several weeks on the stages at Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante. Mabrouk El Mechri directs the project from an original screenplay by Scott Wiper & John Petro, with revisions by Richard Price. Intrepid principals Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans will produce the project along with Jesus Martinez Asencio, principal of Galavis Film which will co-produce the project. Steven Zaillian from Film Rites, Kevin Mann and Matthew Perniciaro of Picture Machine, and Scott Wiper will executive produce.
The film is a US-Spanish production, and the majority of the cast and crew are Spanish and European.
Also starring are the Spanish actors Verónica Echegui and Óscar Jaenada. Co-starring are Caroline Goodall, Roschdy Zem, Joseph Mawle, Rafi Gavron and Emma Hamilton.
The Cold Light of Day centers on a young American whose family is kidnapped while on a vacation to Spain. He is left with only hours to find the connection between their disappearance and his father's secrets.
Summit Entertainment will distribute the film in the US and sell internationally. Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production, and Summit's Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Michael Schaefer, will oversee the project for the studio.

Ridley Scott Doesn't Want Gemma Arterton for Alien Prequels? September 7th, 2010
UPDATE: (9/7/10 9:10 PM PST) Although the UK's Sunday Times is known to be a reputable news source, MTV Movies Blog reached out to Gemma Arterton's publicist, who denied that Gemma Arterton was in talks to star in the Untitled Alien Prequel:
"There's no truth to that." It's possible that Gemma Arterton's camp is just trying to cover her tracks for speaking about the project too soon, and that she will still be meeting with Ridley Scott to appear as the female lead in the Untitled Alien Prequel sometime in the near future. We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further information on the Untitled Alien Prequel as soon as it is made available.
Original Story: After her breakout performance as James Bond's Strawberry Fields in 2008's Quantum of Solace, Brit Gemma Arterton has become one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood. In talking with The Sunday Times about her upcoming graphic novel adaptation Tamara Drewe, the actress revealed that she is set to meet with director Ridley Scott about starring in his upcoming Untitled Alien Prequel and its possible back-to-back sequel.
Ridley Scott himself called the meeting after being wowed by Gemma Arterton's performance as Alice Creed, a young woman who is imprisoned in her own apartment by two ex-convicts in J Blakeson's thriller from earlier this year The Disappearance of Alice Creed. If hired, it is assumed that Arterton will be taking on a role similar to the strong female protagonist Ripley, as played by Sigourney Weaver in the original Alien and its three sequels.
In the same Sunday Times interview, Gemma Arterton also revealed that she has joined Christopher Nolan's planned adaptation of the Ruth Rendell novel The Keys to the Street. Nolan penned the screenplay for Fox Searchlight before directing The Dark Knight, but passed on directing this project about an abused woman so that he could focus on more personal projects. A director for The Keys to the Street has yet to be announced.
It was also noted that Gemma Arterton has recently joined Gabriel Byrne and Timothy Spall in Richard E. Grant's upcoming comedy-Western In with the Outlaws.

Gravity Lead Offered to Natalie Portman September 7th, 2010
Natalie Portman has been offered the lead role in the new Alfonso Cuarón movie Gravity, according to Risky Business Blog. This news comes just days after we reported that Angelina Jolie had passed on the project for a second time.
Natalie Portman and Sandra Bullock were said to be the two actresses that Warner Bros. were most interested in. Robert Downey Jr. is attached to appear, and while he most certainly could carry the movie, Gravity is centered more around the lead female character.
Gravity will be set in a space station and feature the female character's quest for survival when debris wipes out the rest of her crew. The site reports that Natalie Portman will read the latest draft of the script this week, and she is expected to make her decision shortly thereafter.
The movie is being shot in 3D with a budget of $80 million. Alfonso Cuarón is directing from a script he co-wrote with his son, Jonás Cuarón. Filming was said to commence in January.

(CNN) -- The pastor of a Florida church planning to burn Qurans told CNN Tuesday while the congregation plans to go through with the action to protest the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States by al Qaeda, the church is "weighing" its intentions.
Terry Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Florida, who was interviewed on CNN's "American Morning, said the congregation is taking seriously the warning from the U.S. military that the act could cause problems for American troops.
"We have firmly made up our mind, but at the same time, we are definitely praying about it," said Jones said.
"We are definitely weighing the situation. We are weighing the thing that we're about to do. What it possibly could cause. What is our actual message. What are we trying to get across."
The planned action has drawn sharp criticism from Muslims around the world and U.S. officials.
The U.S. Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday issued a statement saying the U.S. government "in no way condones such acts of disrespect against the religion of Islam, and is deeply concerned about deliberate attempts to offend members of religious or ethnic groups." It emphasized that it strongly condemned "the offensive messages, which are contrary to U.S. government policy and deeply offensive to Muslims especially during the month of Ramadan."
"Americans from all religious and ethnic backgrounds reject the offensive initiative by this small group in Florida. A great number of American voices are protesting the hurtful statements made by this organization," the embassy said.
Gen. David Petraeus, the commander in Afghanistan, said the burning of Islam's holy books "could cause significant problems" for American troops overseas.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday.
With about 120,000 U.S. and NATO-led troops still battling al Qaeda and its allies in the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban movement, Petraeus warned that burning Qurans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems -- not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."
Petraeus said he was concerned by the political repercussions of the church's plan.
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

He said extremists would use images of burning Qurans to inflame public opinion and incite violence.
"And this would, again, put our troopers and civilians in jeopardy and undermine our efforts to accomplish the critical mission here in Afghanistan," he said.
One of Petraeus' deputies, Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, told CNN's "The Situation Room" that the event "has already stirred up a lot of discussion and concern" among Afghans.
"We very much feel that this can jeopardize the safety of our men and women that are serving over here in the country," said Caldwell, the head of NATO efforts to train Afghan security forces.
Caldwell said American troops "are over here to defend the rights of American citizens, and we're not debating the First Amendment rights that people have." But he added, "What I will tell you is that their very actions will in fact jeopardize the safety of the young men and women who are serving in uniform over here and also undermine the very mission that we're trying to accomplish."
"I would hope they would understand that there are second- and third-order effects that will occur that will affect that young man and woman who's out there on point for America, serving their nation today, because of their actions back in the United States," he said.
Thousands of Indonesians gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday to protest the planned Quran burning.
"The burning is not only an insult to the holy Quran, but an insult to Islam and Muslims around the world," said Muhammad Ismail, a spokesman for the hard-line Indonesian Muslim group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Jones said his congregation is well-aware that the action is offensive.
"We realize that this action would indeed offend people, offend the Muslims. I am offended when they burn the flag. I am offended when they burn the Bible. But we feel that the message that we are tyring to send is much more important than people being offended."
Jones said Muslims are welcomed in the United States, if they observe the Constitution and don't try to impose Sharia law, or Muslim law. The message, he said, is directed toward the "radical element of Islam."
"Our message is very clear," he said. "It is not to the moderate Muslim. Our message is not a message of hate. Our message is a message of warning to the radical element of Islam, and I think what we see right now around the globe provides exactly what we're talking about," he said.
The center says it was founded in 1986 as a "total concept church for the rich, the poor, the young and the old." Its purpose is to "stand up for righteousness and for the truth of the Bible." It stresses that "Christians must return to the truth and stop hiding."
"We need to speak up against sin and call the people to repentance. Abortion is murder. Homosexuality is sin. We need to call these things what they are and bring the world the true message: that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life," it says on the church's website.
It also emphasizes its dislike of Islam and on its website blog posts an item called "Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran."
"Any religion which would profess anything other than this truth is of the devil. This is why we also take a stand against Islam, which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God, therefore taking away the saving power of Jesus Christ and leading people straight to Hell.
"It is our vision to go around, to preach and to challenge, and to get the church involved and ready. We must go outside of the walls, and march for righteousness."
Commenting the other day on Jones' critique of Islam, Plemon el-Amin, the imam of an Atlanta, Georgia, mosque, said that his words are "really quite uninformed."
"But in America, there is the freedom to be ignorant," el-Amin said. "The only problem is in the world, many people don't understand that particular freedom. So what he is doing is like shouting fire in a theater, in a world theater, and people are upset."
El-Amin said Jones has boasted of never reading the Quran, so, "He doesn't know that he's going to burn a book that has some of the most beautiful passages about Christ Jesus throughout, as well as Moses, Abraham and all of the prophets he reads about and says he follows in the Bible." But he said the best strategy would be to ignore Jones, "like we do people on corners saying the end of the world is coming."
Other religious organizations have joined with U.S. Muslim groups to oppose the Quran-burning. The National Association of Evangelicals is urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions, and Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu leaders in Gainesville have organized a "Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope" the night before the scheduled Quran burning.
The U.S. Embassy statement made the point that President Barack Obama said in his speech on Islam last year in Cairo that it is "part of his responsibility" to battle "against negative stereotypes of Islam" and made reference to interfaith efforts "to counter this kind of ignorance and misinformation."
"And during his recent Iftar speech at the White House he said: Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country."
In the CNN interview, Jones was asked about the Christian principle of turning the other cheek -- not acting out in violence or engaging in payback and in deed.
"I think in deed that most of the time, we as Christians are indeed called to turn the other cheek. I believe that most of the time, talk and diplomacy is the correct way. But I always think that once in a while, I think you see that in the Bible, there are incidents where enough is enough and you stand up," Jones said.
An armed Christian organization that had pledged to protect the Dove World Outreach Center withdrew its support from the Quran-burning last week, stating the event "may diminish the work of the Holy Spirit to witness to Muslims."
That group's founder, Shannon Carson, said he agrees with the church's stance on Islam, which he called a cult "that is invading our nation." But he complained that the "liberal media" is using stories on Jones's plans "to distract, divide and enrage the public."

'Real Housewives of New Jersey' loses a cast member September 7th, 201010:07 AM ET
Jacqueline and Teresa aren’t the only ones that can hug Danielle goodbye on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”
Bravo confirmed on its website Tuesday that Danielle Staub will not be returning next season to the hit reality show. The announcement comes the day after part two of the series reunion show which featured Staub going head to head with fellow housewives Teresa Giudice, Jacqueline Laurita and Caroline Manzo.
“According to our very own Andy Cohen, 'The reunion was Danielle's last appearance on 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey','” said a statement on the Bravo site. "We thought the hugs were a great way to end two seasons of bitterness between the women."
“The hugs” refers to Staub’s awkward attempt to make nice with Giudice and Laurita during the reunion show. The now ex-housewife embraced the two women - who she has been locked in a bitter dispute with all season - and murmured words of apology.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- New Spider-Man Andrew Garfield says suiting up as the web-slinger is a role he’s been ready to play for over two decades.
“I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, ‘Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?’” he told The Hollywood Reporter over the weekend. “‘Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks?…’ So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, ‘This is what we’ve been waiting for.’”
The 27-year-old actor, who will take over the reigns as Peter Parker in the Marc Webb-directed franchise reboot, explained that he’s thrilled to step into the role previously played by Toby Maguire.
“Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure,” he told THR. " It’s a true f***ing honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people.”
However, Andrew revealed that the 2012 movie won’t be the first time he’s sported the Marvel super hero’s suit.
“I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume,” he added.

VENICE: With a clientele that includes crowned heads, Archimede Seguso Vetreria, a stalwart of Murano's storied glassmakers, has no need to change its formula for success.
"We buck the trend. We work traditionally, everything by hand," said Gino Seguso, son of the late Archimede, the solid glass sculptor famed for his stylised animals, and generations of Segusos before him on the outlying Venetian island of Murano.
"We consider ourselves the 'couturiers' of glass," said Seguso, whose atelier collaborates with top international artists, designers and architects and caters for royalty, heads of state and the likes of Tiffany's, a loyal client for 60 years.
The guest book holds the compliments of Queen Sirikit of Thailand, King Juan Carlo and Queen Sofia of Spain and Italian President Giorgio Napolitano among other notables.
The glassmaker's enormous creations lend prestige to places like the lobby of the Veneto Bank headquarters or add extra opulence to the swank Hotel Metropole on Venice's Grand Canal near St Mark's Square.
That grandeur makes a stark contrast to the rustic Murano workshop, where a 100-year-old furnace was fired up.
Though dressed in an impeccable suit, Seguso lifted a plate off the furnace to reveal the blinding yellow heat inside, and used a long iron tool to pull out a glowing red lump of molten glass, waving it in a gentle circle as cooling strands of glass spiraled to the floor.
The workshop was set up in 1948, shortly after Archimede Seguso left the family firm to create his own brand.
He left an indelible mark on glassmaking, having started out as a teenager and worked until six months before his death in 1999 aged 90.
"In the 1920s my father was considered the maestro for animals," Gino Seguso said, adding that he returned to the speciality in the late 1950s.
The older Seguso is also credited with developing the technique of embedding filigree inside his creations as well as for his lacework, a technique known as Merletto, the Italian word for lace.
In the showroom bursting with chandeliers, vases and objets d'art, as well as a glass menagerie of rabbits, ducks or fish and other figurines, Seguso, who himself joined the family business in 1959, ticks off the decades reflected in his father's rendition of the female form.
During Italy's pre-war fascist period, which harkened back to the Roman empire, the feminine figure was more classical, with a smaller head and fuller body, he said. Moving on to the 1970s, he held up another nude, this one tall and thin.
Seguso dreams of building a museum devoted to his father's work and has approached Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, designer of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, for the project.
Today the atelier's 30 craftsmen -- all local except for one Sri Lankan and one Russian -- work at their own pace, producing no more than three or four objects a day.
Seguso's three daughters Emanuela, Francesca and Barbara are in charge of jewellery and accessories under the brand Segusissime, with clients including US First Lady Michelle Obama.
"The idea of making glass jewellery came to them in a flash when they were in their forties," said Seguso, in his early 70s.
While aware of the threat of copies mass-produced on "terra firma" -- meaning mainly China -- Seguso, whose pedigree as a glassmaker goes back to 1397, was untroubled.
"You can tell the difference. If they want to copy us, let them. We can always create something new and distinctive," he said.
Archimede Seguso Vetreria is a purveyor of "slow glass," Seguso joked. "We will stick to our tradition of creating by hand with a touch of fantasy."

LONDON: Researchers have pinpointed at least eight unexplained symptoms most closely linked to cancer.
The Keele University team also points to the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia.
The other symptoms are: rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal prostate tests.
Cancer Research UK said unusual changes in a person's health should be checked.
The researchers were looking for symptoms which gave a one in 20 or higher chance of turning out to be cancer.
Although this still represents a relatively low chance of anyone with the symptom having the disease, any suspicion of cancer can mean that the patient is sent for tests more quickly, in order to catch the disease as early as possible.
The figure for each symptom was calculated by combining the results of 25 previous studies.
They found that, if the patient was below the age of 55, there were only two signs which reached the 'one-in-20' threshold.
These were a rectal prostate examination which gave abnormal results, and a breast lump.
After 55, but only in men, there was evidence that difficulty swallowing could be a sign of oesophageal cancer, while blood in the urine was highlighted as a particular concern for men and women aged over 60.
Dr Mark Shapley, who led the research, said: "GPs should audit their management and reflect upon these cases as part of their appraisal to improve quality of care.
"There should be more open public debate on the level of risk that triggers a recommendation for referral by a GP."
Professor Amanda Howe, honorary secretary of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "It's useful to see these well-known 'red flag' symptoms and signs validated in primary care research, and reinforces the importance of encouraging patients to discuss worrying symptoms early with their GP."
However, a spokesman for Cancer Research UK said that these were by no means the only potential warning signs for cancer.
"The particular symptoms this study has highlighted are already thought of as important potential signs of cancer, but there are more than 200 different types of cancer, which cause many different symptoms.
"So if you notice an unusual or persistent change in your body it's important to get it checked out. When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is often more likely to be successful."

WASHINGTON: "Kicking like a girl" is a real phenomenon and may explain why females are more likely to suffer knee injuries in sports such as football, US researchers said Wednesday.
The researchers found significant differences in knee alignment and muscle activation between men and women while kicking a ball.
The study appearing in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery offers a possible explanation on why female players are more than twice as likely as males to sustain an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
"By analyzing the detailed motion of a soccer kick in progress, our goal was to home in on some of the differences between the sexes and how they may relate to injury risk," said orthopedic surgeon Robert Brophy of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and the study author.
"This study offers more information to help us better understand the differences between male and female athletes, particularly soccer players."
Brophy and his colleagues from the Motion Analysis Laboratory and Sports Medicine Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York used 3-D video-based motion analysis and electromyography to examine the differences between 13 male and 12 female college soccer players during the action of kicking a soccer ball.
They found that male players activate the hip flexors inside the hip in their kicking leg and the hip abductors outside of the hip in their supporting leg more than females. The males also generated more than twice as much activation of the gluteus medius and vastus medialis muscles on the upper leg and pelvis area.
"Activation of the hip abductors may help protect players against ACL injury," said Brophy, a former collegiate and professional soccer player.
"Since females have less activation of the hip abductors, their hips tend to collapse into adduction during the kick, which can increase the load on the knee joint in the supporting leg, and potentially put it at greater risk for injury."
Brophy said the study does not establish a cause-and-effect between muscle activation, knee alignment and ACL injuries, but added the data "moves us toward better understanding of what may contribute to differences in injury risk between the sexes and what steps we might take to offset this increased risk in females."
Football or soccer is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States with approximately 20 million registered players, with a large number of them females.

WASHINGTON: A two-year-old boy whose heart stopped 10 times has made medical history after becoming the youngest person in the world to be fitted with an artificial lung.
Owen Stark was a seemingly happy, healthy little boy until he collapsed during a family shopping trip near his home in Missouri, U.S.
Paramedics fought to keep the brave toddler alive when his heart stopped almost ten times as he was rushed to hospital by air ambulance.
The youngster was diagnosed with Pulmonary Artery Hypertension, which causes the heart and lungs to rapidly shut down. It is common in pensioners, but extremely rare in children, affecting just one in 100,000.
The fragile toddler needed an urgent lung transplant to save his life and was put on a heart-lung bypass machine as the search for a donor began.
More than two weeks on the machine could cause irreversible damage so doctors at St Louis Children's Hospital fitted Owen with a German-built artificial lung.
The device - called NovaLungs LA - was placed outside the body and worked by stimulating Owen's own lungs to take in more oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. It was the first time the procedure had ever been used on someone so young.
Owen's father Justin, 32, said: 'Owen kept flat-lining, his heart stopped several times when he was first taken to hospital.
'It's without doubt the worst experience I have ever been through and could ever imagine going through.
'Doctors told us Owen was in the worst condition they had ever seen and to prepare for the worst.
'We thought we were going to lose him for good.'
Doctors predict the toddler who has now even been taken off the transplant list should live a long and happy life.
Owen's mother Tonya, 29, said: 'His life expectancy has gone from a few days to a few weeks and now years. It's a miracle.'
Proud father Justin added: 'There is some consolation in knowing Owen's procedure could help other children in the long run but we would have given anything not to be the first parents to try this.
'It's absolutely amazing. We had no choice really, it was horrific, it was either going to work or that would be it.'
Dr Mark Grady, a paediatric cardiologist at the hospital, said Owen had made a miraculous recovery despite being given little chance of survival without a transplant.
He said: 'I don't think there is any question about it. This absolutely saved his life. His recovery is nothing short of amazing.
'Now he could be going home within a month which we never ever thought would be possible.
'This potentially opens the way for younger patients and even newborns everywhere to be fitted with artificial lungs.'

LONDON: Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, is Britain’s most senior GP and he has criticized reckless attitude of the nation towards overeating, smoking, and boozing.
He said that this attitude was taking parents and their children towards early death.
He added that adults smoking in a car with kids in it were guilty of child abuse. Professor Field, who represents 42,000 British GPs, added, "I suppose the same people also smoke at home in front of their children. Evidence from the US indicates that more young children are killed by parental smoking than by all other unintentional injuries combined."
He urged all people who were obese, moms-to-be, drinkers and smokers to transform themselves into role models for others.
Prof Fields criticized parents who had no check on their kids when they indulged in junk food. His harshest criticism was for parents who smoked in front of their kids.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s viewpoint matched with that of Fields when Lansley said that people should take charge of their health and must not wait for the state to do so.

WASHINGTON: People who tend to be confrontational, especially those who are competitive and aggressive, run a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a study released Monday.
Researchers with the National Institute on Aging (NIA) examined 5,614 residents of four villages in Sardinia, an Italian Mediterranean island.
People who classed themselves as aggressive on a standard personality test were more likely to suffer from thickening of the neck arteries than those who were classed as affable or accommodating, the research found.
Thickening of the arteries is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke, note the authors of the study which appeared in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.
Three years after the first research was done, "those who scored higher on antagonism or low agreeableness -- especially those who were manipulative and quick to express anger -- continued to have thickening of their artery walls. These traits also predicted greater progression of arterial thickening," the study found.
Among those examined, people who were the most antagonistic 10 percent had about a 40-percent higher risk for thicker arteries.
"People who tend to be competitive and more willing to fight for their own self interest have thicker arterial walls, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease," said Angelina Sutin, Ph.D., the lead author.
"Agreeable people tend to be trusting, straightforward and show concern for others, while people who score high on antagonism tend to be distrustful, skeptical and at the extreme cynical, manipulative, self-centered, arrogant and quick to express anger," she added.
The NIA-funded study was done on Sardinia, with participants aged 14-94 (42 on average) and 58 percent were women.

BOGOTA: A 24-year-old Colombian has taken the title of the world's shortest man, measuring just 27 ins high (70cm) – slightly taller than the height restrictions for a piece of carry-on aeroplane luggage.
Edward Nino Hernandez weighs just 22lbs and has just been officially certified as the world's shortest living man by Guinness World Records.
"He hasn't grown since he was two years old," his mother, Noemi Hernandez, said of the oldest of her five living children.
The previous title-holder was He Pingping of China, who was 1.5 ins (4cm) taller and died March 13. The Guinness people discovered Nino afterward.
They say Mr Hernandez's reign is not likely to last long, however.
Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal is expected to take over after he turns 18 on Oct. 14. He measures about 22 ins (56cm) and is currently recognised by Guinness as the shortest living teenager.
Doctors never could explain why Mr Hernandez is so small, his parents say.
"They never gave us a diagnosis," Mrs Hernandez, said.
Mrs Hernandez, 43, who lives in Bogota, said her son weighed just 3.3lbs (1.5kgs) at birth and was 15 ins (38cm) long.
She said doctors at the National University studied him until he was three, then lost interest.
"I feel happy because I'm unique," Mr Hernandez said.
Mr Hernandez had to repeat several years of school before dropping out in the eighth grade. But he's very sociable, loves to travel – though he hasn't been outside Colombia – and likes to play dominoes.
"He only gets depressed when he's shut in at home," his mother said.
Leafing through an advance copy of the Guinness World Records 2011 edition, which launches Sept. 15 in the United States and the next day internationally, Mrs Hernandez shows her son a picture of the world's smallest woman, who is from India.
He's not interested in the least.
Mr Hernandez says he already has a girlfriend. She's 18, is named Fanny and measures just under 5ft (1.5m), he says.

MUMBAI: Santosh Sivan has started the shoot of his trilingual Urumi in the forest areas surrounding Malshej Ghat. The film has Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva and Genelia in the lead, with Deepak Dev providing music. Santosh has pulled off a coup by getting Tabu and Vidya Balan to do separate item songs.
He recently shot a rain song with Tabu, Prabhu Deva and Prithviraj. We hear that it was actually pouring cats and dogs on location in the forests of Malshej Ghat when he shot the song! Interestingly, a few months ago, Santosh shot in artificial rain for a song in Mani Ratnam's Raavan.
Now, in pouring rain, he shot the song choreographed by Bollywood's famous dance master Ahmed Khan. Prithviraj, who is also one of the producers of the film tweeted: "Santhosh is making Malshej look like another world as nature and the rains made it look terrific. We finished the song picturisation earlier than we thought, thanks to Ahmed Khan and others."
Later, speaking to a local newspaper from the location, Santosh said, "We are filming in a never-seen-before remote area near Malshej Ghat. It is quite hectic; the Tabu song is complete and choreographed by Ahmed Khan in a different way. The Vidya Balan song sequence is still in progress and we are also filming with Alex, who acted in Madraspattinam."
Meanwhile, the buzz is that Genelia — who plays a Portuguese princess — is learning horse riding and will be joining the unit later.

MUMBAI: Kareena Kapoor's latest fascination for French language might land Saif into teacher's shoes. Bebo showed interest to learn the language while shooting for Agent Vinod in Morocco.
If sources are to be believed, no sooner Saif started conversing with one of the assistant directors of the film who also knew French that Bebo fell in love with the language. And now is all set to learn the same under Saif's guidance.
It will be interesting to see whether Saif will strike a balance and spare some time for his lady-love for French classes.

Foreign powers should stop interfering in the case of an Iranian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning, Iran's foreign ministry has said.
In Tehran, a spokesman said the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani "should not become a human rights issue".
She is accused of murder and adultery and faces death or life in prison.
The sentence has led to widespread criticism, the latest from EC President Jose Manuel Barroso, who called it "barbaric beyond words".
Speaking in France, Mr Barroso said: "We condemn such acts, which have no justification under any moral or religious code."
Lashes However, Tehran's foreign ministry dismissed Western concerns about Iranian justice.
"Unfortunately, [they are] defending a person who is being tried for murder and adultery," spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at a Tehran news conference.
"If releasing all those who have committed murder is to be perceived as a human rights issue, then all European countries should release all the murderers in their countries," he was reported as saying.
Ms Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was condemned to death for illicit sex and charged with involvement in her husband's murder.
After criticism from foreign nations, there were reports in July that Iranian officials may have temporarily halted her stoning sentence. However, she still faces the possibility of death by hanging, or life imprisonment.
Her case is now being reviewed by Iran's Supreme Court. It remains stayed pending a final decision by the judiciary, Mr Mehmanparast added.
According to her son, Iranian authorities have also sentenced Ms Ashtiani to 99 lashes after the publication in the Times newspaper in the UK of a picture purportedly of her without a headscarf.
The Times later published a correction, saying the photograph was of a different Iranian woman.

The Hollywood film star Angelina Jolie is in Pakistan to draw attention to the plight of flood victims. This is the fourth visit by Ms Jolie to Pakistan since she became a UNHCR goodwill ambassador

Last week the actress released a video appealing for more donations. Across Pakistan, nearly 21 million people have been affected by the disaster.
The 34-year-old visited affected communities where millions of long-term Afghan refugees reside.
"UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie arrived in Pakistan today to meet people affected by the floods and to highlight the continued urgent need for help," the UNHCR said in a statement.
The UNHCR says that it expects to ask for more money in the coming days. It says that pledges of aid have been slow and that it still needs $120m for tents and other supplies.
In the south of Pakistan, areas are being newly-flooded even as the long process of reconstruction begins in the north.
Well over a million people have been forced to live in schools.
This is the fourth visit by Ms Jolie to Pakistan since she became a UNHCR goodwill ambassador in 2001.
The video message she released last week appealed for greater public support for Pakistan's relief efforts. She has personally donated $100,000 to the flood appeal.
The UNHCR is providing relief aid including shelter materials to those displaced by the disaster, which officially has killed 1,760 people.

ISLAMABAD: Angelina Jolie arrived in Pakistan to meet victims of the floods and highlight the need for international help, the United Nations said.
Jolie was in the country on Tuesday in her role as a "goodwill ambassador" for the UN's refugee agency.
International relief agencies sometimes enlist celebrities to draw attention to their work and get more funds. The UN gave no details of Jolie's itinerary.
The trailers of Gautham and Sambhavi starrer Vareva was launched recently. Noted directors Ram Gopal Varma and Puri Jagannath unveiled the trailers.
