Movie Plot

28-year-old Val is attractive, educated and comfortably off. She sleeps with whomever she wants whenever she wants. The death of her grandmother provokes a change in her life; a change Val herself knows is needed. She meets Jaime and falls for him, realising that marriage is the way to achieve the emotional stability. However, a series of unfortunate events push her to the brink of suicide and Val must brave it all, even if it means battling violence, drugs and a life of prostitution.

Movie Reviews

Adapted from a sexy Euro chick lit book, this 95-minute story about a French lass who suffers from uncontrollable urges of the flesh is at once hollow, misguided and ill-conceived. If Catherine Breillat had a chance to review this, one could say she might list it down as A-list text on all the wrong ways to do erotica.

Self-important bourgeois BS hardly come any worse than "Diario De Una Ninfómana" (original Spanish title), which chronicles the ludicrous sex-ventures of a woman named Valere who, having been dumped too many times by too many sex buddies, falls in love with one man in particular, for no ascertainable reason. They marry and he turns abusive, driving her to the brink of suicide but she bizarrely responds by joining a brothel. Seems like this could well have been listed under comedy as well!

Although well-shot with decent production values, this movie lacks a credible story even if pushed as an art piece, not to mention it suffers the setback of an alluring but ultimately uninteresting lead actress in Belen Fabra. She must have played the most forgettable screen nympho in recent years and could have done with some Tinto Brass coaching.

Perhaps the proverbial nail in the coffin is hammered home when the introduction of a wheelchair-bound whoremonger leads to some hocus-pocus revelation and redemption on the part of the lead character. It seems like everything, down to the music score, is forced and contrived. | |It is amazing how movies like these get green-lighted. Machak Kaalai is a dubbing version of Telugu movie Lakshmi Kalyanam. Ramu (Kalyan Ram) is very fond of his sister in law Lakshmi (Kajal). Ramu is an uneducated guy who works in farms. Lakshmi’s father is a wealthy guy and is the president of the village. Their village has feuds with a neighboring village. Giri (Ajay) is from the other village and he wants to marry Lakshmi. But Lakshmi and Ramu are in love. Ramu has to win a race over Giri to marry Lakshmi. The rest of the story is all about the hurdles Ramu faces in order to wed Lakshmi.

First things first. You wouldn’t expect a classic tale of movie making from a director – Tarun Gopi – whose previous credential include a hardcore commercial potboiler, Thimiru. Having said that, we did expect a racy entertainer with Simbhu’s return after a brief sabbatical creating enough and more hype. However, Kaalai, Tarun Gopi’s second venture and first with Simbhu is a classic case of too much in too little time. With too little scenes that substantiate the sense of logic, Tarun Gopi has royally squandered an opportunity.
Kaalai

Less said the better about the story. Simbhu shares his name with two other people - one villain and one cop-turned-baddie and the situations arising out of it promise enough curiosity for a while as soon as the movie opens. However, it eventually fizzles out when the movie takes a turn for better or for worse.

Seema – Simbhu’s grandmother – slays five men, mind you when she was only ten, since they flouted her father’s advices and distilled alcohol illegally in the village also involving in other shady activities. The villagers, for her noble act, consider her their head after her return from the prison and are peaceful under her reign. However, trouble crops up in the name of a police officer – Lal – whose ego is hurt when challenged by the fellow policeman’s son that he can’t find anything illicit in Simbhu’s village, ruled by the godmother Seema.

WHERE GOT GHOST? is a horror-comedy, comprising of 3 horror tales (Roadside Got Ghost, Forest Got Ghost and House Got Ghost) told in a good old comedy fashion.
Review

For once, forget all the big movies that are currently playing at your cinema and try switching to Jack Neo's latest "Where Got Ghost?" because this three-part storytelling isn't something as confusing as one would think. Instead each story is told in its own, complete and standalone way.

If comparing to horror movie spoofs like "Scary Movie," this Singaporean addition is best described as funny, entertaining and tear-jerking at the same time. Being labelled as the new "hor-medy" (horror comedy), "Where Got Ghost" tells three different stories with three different meanings and moral values. Isn't moral values an essential part of Jack Neo movies? The uniqueness in presenting each plot is one of the many commendable aspects.

In this new release, there are plenty of CGI, especially those in "too gory" scenes. The good ghostly effects seem to hide the fact this is just a project from Singapore and not a multi-million Hollywood blockbuster. Goosebumps are in order! You laugh when you're supposed to laugh and you get scared when you're supposed to be scared.

Of the three segments in this movie, the one that stands out is "Forest Got Ghost". An online search will tell you that the director and his crew actually encountered spooky incidents while shooting this part in the forest. Strange graphics began to appear on their shooting equipment while damages to machines also make up a pretty unforgettable night for the crew.

Perhaps what you'd least expect from this movie is that younger children will also enjoy it as much as adults. Simply listen to the sound of laughter around you when any ghostly apparition appears on the screen. You'd say that "Where Got Ghost" is definitely an interesting way of telling horror stories to the general public. Check it out whenever you're ready for the experience.
Director Jack Neo breaks new ground with new horror-comedy "Where Got Ghost?" releasing in Malaysia 10 Sept and Singapore 13 Aug.

16 Jul – Industrious Singaporean director Jack Neo is about to release what is hoped to be another box office wonder for audiences on both sides of the Causeway – a horror-comedy in Mandarin, English and Hokkien, titled "Where Got Ghost?"

The celebrated 49-year-old filmmaker, who was behind regional commercial successes such as "Ah Long Pte Ltd", "Love Matters", "Money No Enough" and "I Not Stupid", told Cinema Online earlier in February this year: "...we have all seen horror films from Korea, Japan and Malaysia, and we can stereotype how their ghosts commonly look like - but how would a Singaporean ghost appear? Now that's something refreshing for the audience to look forward to!"

"Where Got Ghost?" is described in press releases and production notes provided by its Malaysian film distributor Primeworks Studios and Singaporean film distributor as "an estimated 100-minute long 3-in-1 horror-comedy with segments titled Roadside Got Ghost, House Got Ghost and Forest Got Ghost."

Director Jack Neo may be the biggest draw at Singapore’s box-office, but that does not mean he’s one of the best. Instead of honing his skills over the years, his films have only gotten sloppier, lazier and more self-satisfied. Last year’s Ah Long Pte Ltd and Money No Enough 2 were haphazard to say the least, and this year’s Love Matters marked another low. That Singapore heartlanders continue to flock to his movies says a lot about the reputation he’s built after years of performing TV skits.

His newest horror comedy Where Got Ghost? is somewhat better than those three, but it’s still crudely made. It comprises three short stories titled Roadside Got Ghost, Forest Got Ghost and House Got Ghost, and stars the most well-known male comedians on Singapore TV.

In the first story Roadside Got Ghost, Richard Low plays a conman who uses a fake hotline to trick people into giving up their lottery winnings to him. But when a ghost comes calling, he dismisses it as a prank call. Of course, it’s the ghost who gets the last good laugh. Well, someone should… since no one at the media screening found much to laugh at here.

The second story is somewhat better. Forest Got Ghost stars Wang Lei and Ah Nan as two reservist soldiers who meet a ghost in the jungle after deviating from their supposed route. This story has a few creepy bits and some good laughs. But it is so long-winded that the long dull bits ultimately drown out the best bits. Is it so hard to find a good editor?

Salute is the story of a sincere police officer who tries to curb the domination of politicians and gives a call to the people to choose their leaders right.

What's it all about?
Satyam (Vishal) is an ACP by profession, who sticks to sincerity in duty and goes to any extent to get criminals behind bars. He is also against encounters that simply erase the criminals and the real motive or people behind them. Home Minister Kondala Rao (Kota Srinivasa Rao) tries to clear his way of opponents to become the CM at a time when the latter is in the hospital. He plans to kill his contenders for the position - Cabinet Ministers Mahadevayya (Santhana Bharathi), Chandramathi (Apoorva), and Punyakoti (Jeeva) and beckons his conman Delhi Babu (Ravi Kale) to get the job done by an outsider. Enters Prathapa Rudra (Upendra), who eventually kills Mahadevayya and Chandramathi, at which time Kondala Rao learns that he's not the killer chosen by his man! Then, he realizes that this man could be sent by Punyakoti to kill him instead! Who's this killer Prathapa Rudra then? Who sent Prathapa Rudra? Who's next in his hit list? Did Satyam put a check to Prathapa Rudra? Answers to all these questions form the rest of the story.

Vishal is very impressive as a cop. He has taken much care in his looks and body language, and even went to the extent of shaving his head off when the story demanded. Nayanatara is more the hero's neighbor and love interest than a TV journalist. In fact, except in one dialogue and in some scenes where she holds the camera, the audience would not even know that she's a journalist! Upendra is superb in a role with negative shades. His role was applauded by the audiences more than anyone else's! Kota Srinivasa Rao is as natural as he can be as the evil-minded politician. Tanikella Bharani has a limited role as the heroine's doctor-father and Hema appears opposite Bharani. Sudha Chandran, the dancer from Mayuri, appears as the hero's mother in an insignificant role. Ali as the heroine's aide, Brahmanandam as a broker at the RTA, and Senthil in a role that he repeats from Bharateeyudu fail to generate much comedy.

The story has nothing new in it. The treatment too is laced with unnecessary scenes such as those involving the children, and has scenes that miss logic. The screenplay is generally too loose to hold the interest of the audiences throughout. Music has Harris Jairaj's signature all over. Re-recording falters sometimes. Lyrics are good for the first song nammara nEstam.... Choreography, though not the dances particularly, is good on the whole, and particularly for the second song gaDagaDagaDa... involving children, superheroes, and graphics. The last song Endammaayaa... is typically Tamil in its picturization, and that's possibly why Chiranjeevi's poster is shown in the backdrop in the starting of the song - to attract Telugu audience too! (There's also a dialogue " Megastar anTE mass...", probably for the same reason, elsewhere in the movie.) Nayanatara's sizzling performance in one of the songs may cater to the masses, but doesn't help the movie much anyway. Camerawork is impressive. Dialogues by Shashank Vennelakanti are good and thought-provoking as needed. Action choreography is interesting, though the fight sequences are shot to be long.

Salute movie is all about the life story of B.C.Patil. Going through his early life as cop and arrested for taking part in farmers movement and kept in Hindalga Jail in Belgaum to till he became an MLA. B.C Patil is focusing mainly on this proverb of police department ‘Every civilian is a policeman and every policeman is a civilian’.

A regular cop story, the movie begins with Sathyam (Vishal) who is a tough cop and an honest one too. He is an ACP and believes that law and order must be maintained at all times, however he is more of a peace lover and strongly believes that anyone who has done something wrong can be taken to task under the purview of justice and book of law without using any special methods. This also makes him feel repulsive about the encounter methods.

However things take a turn when a well known politician (Kota) wants to get on to the chair of the Chief Minister and in this process, he hires a contract killer and gives him a list of names that have to be killed. However, he has a shock of his life when he gets news from the killer that someone else is already on the job without his involvement. Sathyam is given the assignment of nabbing the culprit and finally he manages to arrest Prathap (Upendra) who ironically is an ex cop himself but then he does not believe in the law system since he gets betrayed professionally. The ideology clash between Sathyam and Pratap goes to a peak and then the hero decides to put an end to this by proving his point. Is he successful in his mission? What is the link between Divya (Nayantara) the crime reporter and him? All this forms the rest of the story.

Vishal: is very impressive as a cop. He has taken much care in his looks and body language, and even went to the extent of shaving his head off when the story demanded. Nayanatara: is more the hero's neighbor and love interest than a TV journalist. Dialogues by Shashank Vennelakanti are good and thought-provoking as needed. Action choreography is interesting, though the fight sequences are shot to be long.

The director has come up with a wafer thin plot and though his presentation was good, the narration lost out big time and it turned out to be pathetic. The dialogues are stale, the script is feeble, the screenplay has not been executed perfectly. The saving grace for the movie is the above average music with some soulful tunes and the cinematography was eye catching. The costumes department was decent and the frontline sectors failed miserably. Vishal is impressive in his new muscular look and looked like the perfect cop guess that's one reason why he looked stiff at few scenes, Nayan on the other hand was oozing out glamour in the songs but then she was totally decked up during the movie so her role is actually negligible. Upendra did his bit to give an anti hero feeling but his role was not well etched, Kota did a brilliant performance while the comedy track between Ali and Brahmanandam looked silly. The others did not have much scope to perform so they are not in the list.

While the movie does pass on the message that the people in the society should generally be more proactive, there is not much good in the film except for the hero and good camerawork and (lengthy) action episodes! Still, this is not the first movie with the exact same message! And, did the politicians, police, or public change, by the way? Why or why not? Let's ask ourselves too!

Produced under the banner of Zindagi Films, Rhythm tells the story of a bunch of friends and their relationships. Aryan, Dileep, Nirmal and Priya are orphans brought up under the loving care of Father Gabriel. All four are blind by birth, but want to lead their lives without depending on anybody. So they decide to earn their own living, and take a house on rent and start working.

Aryan and Nirmal work in a music store, while Priya works in a shop selling flowers. Dileep gets work in a tea manufacturing unit. Their lives begin to change and they start living like ordinary human beings, almost forgetting their physical disability.

It is then that things start taking a new turn for them. Priya finds place in the minds and thoughts of Aryan and Dileep, both of whom fall in love with her. They vie with one another for her attention, and even work out plans to outwit each other.

In the meantime Dileep gets his eyesight and that gives a new twist to things. What follows forms the rest of the plot. Debutante Shanavas becomes Aryan while Adityan becomes Dileep and Prashanth becomes Nirmal. Tamil actress Anjali dons the role of Priya. Dhanyatha too does a key role in the film.

Rhythm is director M.S. Pradeep Kumar's latest offering after Chithrakoodam and Chilanthi. The film is made out to be a youthful one which zeros in on the world of friendship and inter-personal relationships. Rhythm is almost ready for release.
