This is the remarkable story of a K through 12 school on Chicago's impoverished, high crime West Side, that has been sending 100% of graduating seniors to four year colleges and universities for 30 years. More than half of them are accepted by tier one schools and the class of 2008 was awarded more than $4.5 million in college scholarships. Providence St. Mel is a school that has completely escaped America's educational crisis.
Paul J. Adams III, an African-American man with activist roots in the 1960s civil rights movement, came from a family of teachers. After being black listed himself as a teacher in Alabama because of his civil rights activities, he moved to Chicago, received a master’s degree in psychology, and then landed a job as guidance counselor at Providence St. Mel, an all-black parochial school on Chicago’s notorious drug-ridden, gang-ruled West Side. "The Providence Effect" is an account of an individual man, the inner city Chicago school he founded, and the student lives that school has changed and saved.
If there's an argument against the Providence St. Mel prep school being the supreme model for remaking American education, you won't find it in "The Providence Effect," a portrait of a highly successful Chicago institution that feels more like a grant application than a social-issue doc. A PSA for educational tough love, "Providence" has earned better grades on the fest circuit than it's likely to get in a theatrical arena, where nonfiction frequently flunks out. Limited release begins Sept. 25.
Helmer Rollin Binzer's chief problem is tardiness: As "The Providence Effect" commences, Paul Adams III and his experiment in highly disciplined education have long been established. They've achieved a 100% success rate in college placement of seniors, and the bouquets have long been thrown; Ronald Reagan is the president we see visiting Providence St. Mel and praising the man who remade it. All of which is well and good but utterly devoid of conflict, aka drama. Witnessing testimonials about what's been accomplished don't quite match seeing something happen.
And a prime opportunity for something compelling seems to have been missed. Providence St. Mel decides to open a charter K-5 school, to see if its policies can translate to a public building and younger students. Reflecting on the school's success, Adams catalogues all the problems they faced, including unions, work rules and "things that don't have anything to do with children." But what are they? Why don't we get to see all this happen? Watching the struggle unfold would have made a movie out of the garland of roses Binzer throws at Adams.
Opening with a graduation ceremony and establishing the school's credentials, Binzer has little to offer, it seems, besides a parade of talking heads (from inside St. Mel's, or among its graduates), all of whom praise Adams and the school he resurrected after it was abandoned by the Chicago archdiocese. Adams' credentials as a social activist are established via footage of the civil rights fight of the '60s, in which Adams participated -- the point being that while there's no shortage of nobility in "The Providence Effect," a little such confrontation would have cured its ills as cinema.
Production values are largely adequate, although Tom Dumont and Ted Matson's score shows exceptional promise and works well with others.
"The Providence Effect" is the story of an individual man, the inner city Chicago school he founded, and the student lives the school has changed and saved. The school, Providence - St. Mel, has a 30-year 100% college placement record; with an "old school" approach to learning --- "Do the work" --- and a dedicated corps of teachers and administrators, Providence – St. Mel can serve as the model for revamping all of American education.

A haunted house makes no secret of the fact it is not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a twentysomething couple who've just moved into a new home in San Diego, California. Katie has an interest in the paranormal and believes that malevolent spirits have been following her since childhood, though Micah is not so easily convinced. However, after several nights of loud noises and strange happenings, Micah starts to agree with Katie that some sort of ghost may have followed them to the new home. After a paranormal researcher tells the couple he can't help them, Micah decides to take control of the situation and sets up a battery of video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself, he can capture its behavior on tape. Once the surveillance cameras are in place, Katie and Micah bring in a Ouija board in an effort to talk to the spirits, a move that deeply offends the ghosts. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY was the first feature film from writer-director Oren Peli.
After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban "starter" tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic, but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

The second sneak preview of the Telluride Film Festival, the indie-turned-studio horror pic "Paranormal Activity," unspooled in perfect conditions late Saturday: outdoors, in the dense darkness of midnight under pouring rain. And the audience, which stuck it out under makeshift ponchos and umbrellas, were primed for the experience.
By now the backstory to "Paranormal Activity" is the stuff of indie-film lore. Made with a single camera for
$11,000 in one house, the movie caught the attention of Paramount, which noted the film's low-budget spooks, saw it as a potential breakout along the lines of "The Blair Witch Project" and proceeded to acquire the title.
The movie almost didn't make it to the fest. Telluride programming directors invited the film but could only schedule it for the Abel Gance Open Air Cinema, which screens 35 mm prints. But two days before the festival kicked off, Paramount said that it had converted two 35 mm prints and was flying them up. The movie arrived two hours before showtime.
Oren Peli's film follows an an unmarried couple harassed by paranormal forces and their attempts to uncover the culprits. The essence of its psychological hook comes with several time-lapse shots of the couple asleep in their bed while all manner of bizarre but subtle phenomena unfold around them.
At the screening, the crowd often muttered admonitions to the terrified characters onscreen and gasped in unison at impending threats. And while the film indeed can flirt with the obvious -- it stretches its concept a little long and repeats itself -- it also plays on our most basic fears upon falling asleep.
And the ending? The less said about it, the better. Let's just say I walked back to my hotel looking over my shoulder every few steps.
When people begin describing a movie as being "Very much like 'The Blair Witch Project,'" there’s a collective groan and eye roll that emerges from audiences. Whether you loved the movie or hated it, people are very turned off by the whole mock documentary/found footage movie theme that was popularized by "Blair Witch," but in all respect, it’s become a great way for indie filmmakers to tell their story and save money. It’s cheaper, and it allows for a grittier realism that sometimes works and sometimes falls flat on its face. "Paranormal Activity" succeeds with flying colors. It’s a brutal, exhausting, and genuinely horrifying little ghost flick that really makes me rethink my stance on horror films altogether.
The last independent film to use this medium that won me over and has yet to catch on is "In Memorium" a movie very much in the vein of "Paranormal Activity" with pretty much the same arc and concept, and "Paranormal Activity" is in that small sub-genre that works, thanks to great performances and wonderful direction that sell the packaged concept of the entire film being "found footage" depicting a supernatural occurrence that inevitably ruins a happy couple. "Paranormal Activity" has become a slightly controversial independent film that has continued the pretense that what we’ve seen here may or may not be fictional.
Like "Street Thief," the folks behind this have declined to truly explain if what we’re watching is pure fiction from innovative filmmakers, or the most realistic footage of a demonic presence we’ll ever see, and the approach toward blurring the lines of fiction and reality have split the audience for this. Fictional or not, "Paranormal Activity" acts upon its illusion wonderfully with incredible performances from its duo (if they ARE performances, that is), and utterly incredible special effects (If they ARE special… you know the rest). "Paranormal Activity" may be intent on deceiving us in a way, but for all intents and purposes, it’s a wonderful horror film that truly convinces me that the ghost sub-genre isn’t dead, after all.
Every bit of dialogue feels natural, and every moment of misery, mental torture, and pain feels genuine. Micah and Katie have moved in together, and Katie is convinced that she’s been haunted all of her life. This presence that’s watched over her has apparently followed her everywhere, including this new house, and the apparition that resides with them seems to have a fond interest in Katie. Her vain and selfish boyfriend Micah is a man who seeks to document the spectacle with his camera and equipment and purposely ignores Katie’s pleas to respect the paranormal presence and refrain from taunting it. But as the nights pass, the events in the house become much more harrowing and the deliberately paced "Paranormal Activity" takes us along for this grueling experience with every breath.
Micah is first amused by the proceedings and gradually comes to the realization that this benevolent force will be the death of the two and no one can help them. Every day there’s a wash of relief over the couple and the audience who feels safer but will dread the night. Every introduction of night time footage in the master bed room brings with it a sense of sheer terror of what unfolds ever so slowly. There’s nary an explanation of whom or what is terrorizing this couple, and there’s barely any hint to what is bringing terror to this household. Claw prints appear along the floors, recollections of a childhood fire Katie experienced is constantly alluded to, and the night takes on a whole new force of evil that makes every passing moment an experience that will actually leave you covering your eyes with caution.

A rich businessman tries to hide his extramarital affair with a supermodel. To save his skin, he bribes a waiter into pretending to be the supermodel's boyfriend. What follows is a series of mistaken identities and misunderstandings. Nostalgia, sheer delight and an air of expectancy surrounds the first album by the once reigning composers of Bollywood, Nadeem-Shravan, as they come back after a long hiatus for Vashu Bhagnani, (ex -producer No.1 ), for a comedy directed by David Dhawan, DO KNOT DISTURB. Nadeem- Shravan have been the undisputed numero uno composers of Bollywood in the early eighties and nineties and have composed innumerable chartbusters along with their ever reliable lyricist, Sameer, tracks that are still embedded in the hearts of music lovers all over the world . So, lets press on the play button and see if with DO KNOT DISTURB they are able to top the charts once again?
The album begins with Nadeem Shravan going retro as Dev Anand`s evergreen super hit number, ``Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar`` (CID) gets a facelift and is refurbished with a whole lot of arranged programmed rhythm, feminine chorals in the form of ``Zulfaen Khol Khal Ke``. The similarity (especially in the `mukhda`) is so striking that its indeed preposterous to assume that this is a coincidence. However it does entertain mainly due to the singing by the lead pair, the extremely choosy Sonu Niigaam and Anuradha Sriram, the highly talented classical singer from South . Anuradha shows that talent knows no bounds as she is completely at ease in this propositioning and flirtatious number that will look nice on screen, if picturised properly and has the capability of attracting the front benchers. Sameer`s lyrics deserve mention as the naughty mood is conveyed quite effectively and nicely.
``Dont Ever Leave Me`` is vintage Nadeem-Shravan, although the sweet melody that they have always relied upon (in this case its Ajay`s DILWALE) takes a backseat here and its more of techno and electronic beats and synthesized rhythm. In keeping with moving times NS have resorted to this, but while this may appeal to some, it will disappoint their hard core fans who thrived on their lilting melodies. As it is the background arrangements are old fashioned with foot tapping sounds and a constant monotonous rhythm. Sameer`s use of English and Hindi is appealing and doesn`t look forced, it seems a part of the proceedings. Shaan and Shreya go through their rendition like professionals.
It`s a vigorous thumping start for ``Mere Naal``, and indeed a pleasant surprise to find K.K and Shreya behind the mike for this highly energetic `Bhangra` based `fulltoo timepass` dance number that has a slight retro touch to it as well. All credit to NS for bringing these two highly talented singers to sing this number and one is sure that this will surely break the image of the two being just serious singers. Shreya`s voice modulation is amazing and so is KK, who is simply bombastic in this `masaledar` number (the back up vocalists Jigar Saraiya and Nikita Kanwar provide able support) that is sure to be lapped up by mass as well as class. The use of Indian instruments (`dhol`, `ektara`, `sarangi/bansuri`) and their blending effectively with the catchy rhythm, the strong hook that is present throughout the song , along with nice and effective rap (by the ever reliable Earl D) is very good. We have heard a lot of `Bhangra` based number in the past but this one ranks right up their and has all the potential to hit the charts, what with Lara, Govinda and Ritesh gyrating to its infectious rhythm.

So we all heard and danced to Anu Malik`s ``Bebo`` in KAMBAKKHT ISHQ and now we have his (once upon a time) arch rival Nadeem-Shravan coming up with their ``Bebo``. And for that they have hired the lip services of the hottest singer of Bollywood, Neeraj Shridhar and Anushka Manchandani. The super synthesized background rhythm is super cool and makes the `mukhda` very very hummable. The variable tempo of the song makes it a tad different from the ones we are used to. Anushka`s voice has that attitude required and she delivers as always. Together with Neeraj they form a formidable pair. The use of English and Hindi lyrics are highly entertaining and will be lapped up by the youth who will find it to their liking. The ``Baari barsi khatan gayasi, Khat ke le andi Bebo`` part is hilarious. Hear it to believe it! Picturised on Lara and Ritesh, this song will definitely be a treat to watch on screen.
As if to keep up the good tempo started with ``Bebo``, Pritam`s lucky charm Neeraj Shridhar is back once again, this time for NS, with another highly rhythmic number, ``Beautiful Woman`` and giving him company is the highly versatile Sowmya Raoh. The number is more in the line of Sajid -Wajid`s dance tracks from David-Govinda`s last super hit outing PARTNER and we are sure that this has been done intentionally to carry the flavour and the background innuendoes relate back to ``Kisi Disco Mein Jayein`` (BADE MIYAN CHHOTE MIYAN). Despite this song being a `khichdi` of quite a few tunes this `khichdi` is spicy and lick smacking. Reason being Neeraj and Sowmya, whose singing deserves salute, specially Sowmya, who sings with verve and energy.
NS go the A.R. Rahman (PAATHSHALA) way in the title track ``Do Knot Disturb`` and is a nice, youthful number, that has a good mix of melody, rap and singing in a conversational mode. The talented Karthik gets a nod here and he is superb. Anushka`s anglesized accent is a bit too accentuated here. The chorus is nice and helps spread the feel good/comic flavour of the movie. Lyrics are unique and carefree mood of the youth who do not wish to be disturbed is nicely put on paper. Once again is this is a slightly `hat ke` propositioning, `ched-chaad` number that has a philosophical touch to it as well.
On the whole, the audio album of DO KNOT DISTURB is certainly worth a buy. NS have really reinvented themselves and have come of age. Their songs (in most cases) do not appear outdated as is the case with most composers who come out of a long hibernation. Its definitely a good comeback for the composers, although they are still not in full form as they have mostly catered to the requirement and mood of the Vashu-David team`s film rather than their going by their own instinct. Music director Shravan says, `` DO KNOT DISTURB music has something for everybody. The six songs encapsulate different moods and as always, have a variety of melodies.`` Well to some extent you are right Shravan. Our pick - ``Bebo``, ``Mere Naal`` and ``Beautiful Woman``.
Looks like Bollywood would never get bored of making comedy flicks based on the institution of marriage? On top of that, these days, the presence of apna Chi Chi (Govinda) in such flicks is becoming more and more predictable? Somehow or the other, this ace actor always bags an important role in such movies. So, whether it was the box office average movie ‘Life Partner’ or the promising upcoming flick ‘Do Knot Disturb’, you are sure to get a taste of Govinda's expertise over comedy.
Directed by the King of Comedies David Dhawan, ‘Do Knot Disturb’ has been produced by Vashu Bhagnani. The movie stars Bollywood's Who's Who of comedy, such as Rajpal Yadav, Ritesh Deshmukh, Ranvir Shorey, Himani Shivpuri, Rituparna Sengupta and Manoj Pahwa. Add to this, the enigmatic looks and the charming performance of the leading ladies, Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta. The music of the film has been given by the talented duo Nadeem-Shravan, while the lyrics have been written by Sameer.
Coming to the plot of the movie, ‘Do Knot Disturb’ runs around the 'knotty' affair of a rich businessman (Govinda), who resorts to all sorts of measures to hide his extra marital affair with a supermodel (Lara Dutta). His wife (Sushmita Sen) is a sophisticated and sexy lady, who is extremely generous and caring. However, the twist in the ah-so-blissful life of the couple is that the wife is more successful than her husband. While she is the proud owner of a successful company, the lavish house and everything else that money can buy, her husband is the one who lives on his wife's money and moves to her beats.

Review

After long time after the release of the movie Gaalipata, Munagaru Male fame director Yogaraj Bhat has released his third movie Manasaare (Manasare), which features Diganth and Andrita Ray (Aindrita Ray) in the leads. Musician Mano Murthy and lyricist Jayant Kaikini have once again joined hands with the director for the movie.

The movie Manasaare is a family entertainer, which revolves around psychological factors like love and madness. The movie is based on Garcia Gabriel's novel 'Ward No. 9'. The director has weaved a beautifully script by mixing comedy with love. He has even got good grip over the narration.

The highlights of the movie Manasaare are Diganth-Andrith Ray's performance, Mano Murthy's music, Sathya Hegde's camera work, Yogaraj Bhat's dialogues. Although Yogaraj Bhat has tried a lot to get rid of the traces of Munagaru Male and Gaalipata in the movie Manasaare, many of his dialogues remind us of his previous movies.
The first half of the movie is full of comedy and the second half is bit serious and sentimental. The director has failed to convince what he exactly wants to say. In the second, he seems to have stumbled because the movie is confusing with neither comedy nor sentimental.

The hero of the movie is an irresponsible guy, who speaks continuously. Unfortunately, the staff of mental hospital mistake him to be a mad guy and admit him to the mental hospital. He tries to convince other mad patients that he is not an insane, but in vein. Once he comes across a mad girl when he is trying to escape from the hospital. He is infatuated by her and he drops the idea of escaping. What happens next will form the rest of the story.

Director Yogaraj Bhat has made a wise decision in selecting artistes and technician for the movie Manasaare. He is also successful in tapping out wonderful acting in learners like Diganth and Andrita Ray. Diganth has improved his acting a lot when compared to his previous movies. He seems to have aped the dialogue delivery style of Ganesh. Andrita also rocks the audiences. Her appearance speaks more than her words.
Mano Murthy's music is another hero of the movie. The audio of the movie Manasaare has already won the heart of music lovers. The song 'Ello Maleyagide Indu...', which is sung by Sonu Nigam, will no doubt become another 'Anisuthide Yaako Indu...' Other songs like 'Naa Naguva Modalene...' and Kanna Hani are also haunt the listeners.
Over all, the movie Manasaare is a comic-love story. The Hubli- Dharwad Kannada dialect is the highlight of the comic show. Movie Manasaare has got all the qualities to become another Mungaru Male in Kannada. It is a must-watch movie

Junglee girl wooing hearts in Manasare

Fluttering eyelashes, coy smile and nimble gait- purrrr, we are referring to the Junglee cat- Andy Ray. Aindrita Ray transformed overnight from the ‘girl-next-door’ in Meravanige to glamour goddess in Junglee. The paw-some and vivacious Andy maintains that she endears the bubbly cute-girl image.

Satya Hegde’s camera in Yograj Bhatt’s to be released Manasare captures Andy’s dishy looks again. Set against another Sandal cutie-Diganth, the Jodi look tempered with a loot of spice and sizzle. At least the pictures spell the sizzle that is in store (not mentioning Diganth’s attempts to keep ‘cool’). Manasare holds promise for this Bong beauty who strongly believes in her gumption that the glam quotient will be gradually replaced by chunk roles.
Aindrita Ray - Manasare

Rumor mills wind that Andy plays a mentally retarded girl in Manasare. It is probably the first time Andy gets a scoop for the Sridevi-like role played in Sadma. Role or Reel, nothing stops the cameras from revealing the glam shades of this diva whenever it can. Only time can tell, till then, it’s the luscious looking Aindrita for you, in her pristine white outfit, perfect peaches and cream complexion and an irresistible saccharine coated smile.

Studying to be a dentist, wonder how this nineteen year old would manage movies alongside peeping down smelly gums? Let me screech a brake on your thoughts, if you are thinking of lining up appointments for Andy’s dental chair. This damsel is serious about hanging around the industry as long as she can, even if it means some more of skimpy clothing. So for now, it’s the camera over the chair!

Review

In the name of industrialisation and modernisation, we are seeing environmental degradation along with displacement of population. In a period of deep economic slowdown, an NRI Mr. Harsha Ram has dared to produce a non commercial cinema called Bettadapurada Ditta Makkalu.

There are heroes and directors in Kannada industry who consistently give remake movies. But here’s a director who despite all odds is striving hard to adapt a novel in each of his films. Yes, it is Kodlu Ramakrishna back with his new movie. The movie has released in PVR and has gained an official entry into South Asian film festival.

The movie is based on the novel BETTADA PURADA DITTARU by Na. D’ Souza. We can recall that Na. D’ Souza’s earlier novel Mulugade which was adopted as Dweepa won National Film Awards.

The story line is about a small village called Bettada Pura where an industrialist with the help of a local politician tries to start mining activities on the hill of the village. This is opposed by the school children of the village lead by their teacher.

For the first time in the history of Malayalam cinema one film conceived by a team force of 10 directors.

Segments bound together by a single concept "yatra". Supported behind the scenes by a committed team of technical talent from the industry.

On the common theme of journeys, each filmmaker presents their cinematic impression of contemporary times in Kerala. The independent narratives integrate when, during these journeys, their characters pass through KERALA CAFE - a quaint railway cafeteria; there by creating a joint mosaic of issues and impressions; in a symbiotic space and time .Kerala CAFE will have one signature song which brings together the behind-the-scenes making of the different films using the footage of the crew.
There is an eleventh element in the project which will be the integration of the ten stories. The story happens in a Railway cafeteria called “ Kerala Café” where there is an interaction among the characters of the different stories. This will be collectively shot by the participating Directors and the cinematography of this portion will be done by Prakash Kutty, an FTII product.

Ranjith is the compiler and the chief architect of the project.

Krala Cafe', the first Mollywood package of assortments of ten shorts to comprise a full length feature, was censored last week. The movie which will extend to around two hours will feature shorts on a common theme of journey, realised by all eminent new generation directors of Mollywood including Lal Jose, Shaji Kailas, B Unnikrishnan, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Revathy, Anjali Menon, Anwar Rasheed, Uday Ananthan, Padmakumar and Shyamaprasad. Different shorts will feature actors like Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Prithviraj, Jayasuriya, and Salimkumar. The initiative conceived, designed and produced by Renjith will get to theatres for this Ramzan festival.

Similar kinds of experiments have happened before in foreign languages with films like Paris, Je T'aime and also in Hindi with films like Dus Kahaaniyam and Mumbai Cutting.

Ganesh’, the movie with caption ‘Just Ganesh’ arrived today. This is the fifth movie of Ram and he paired up with Kajal, the heroine who is on top seat with the mega block buster ‘Magadheera’. Let us go into the details of the movie.

Story:

Ganesh, (Ram) is a happy go guy with loads of enthusiasm and a thing for helping others. He has friend who falls in love with girl that doesn’t fit into the scheme of things designed by his father (Kasi Viswanath). The father wants his son to be married to his niece Divya (Kajal). Not able to see the pain of his friend, Ganesh decides to help him out by making plan to make Divya fall for someone else i.e Ganesh. He puts his plan into motion by starting out as a tenant of Divya’s at an apartment complex in Hyderabad. The place is apparently, filled with several, 26 in all, playful kids. These kids make their presence felt in all corners of the buildings. Mahadev, played by Ashish Vidyarthi, and Yadgiri (Brahmanandam) match each other’s wits, though Mahadev is the baddie and Yadgiri, the local goon is on the funnier side of things. Ganesh, apparently, has to manage all these people and succeed in his goal of impressing Divya and the methods that he employs form the gist of the film.

Reviews

Ram was utilized to the core and was presented in a great way and is quite impressive. Kajal played the usual Barbie doll role quite enthusiastically, the Kids’s performances are memorable, especially, that of Nani, and the plump kid, Ashish Vidyarthi is wasted as he is used to much better roles, Sameer, Poonam Kaur and Rohini Attanghadi are all reasonably good.
The one thing that shows all along was the lack of focused screenplay and it is surely the director’s biggest responsibility. It seems to lose track of itself and sometimes becomes downright mundane especially, in the second half. The film drags along on predicted lines and doesn’t present anything new. Also the director should have ensured much screen space to the one’s that stood out – the kids.
The film is one of those films that is good and bad at the same time. The first half, though not exactly riveting, does more to keep the audiences interested than the extremely dragging second half, which never seems to end. The film did have its moments especially scenes involving the kids, which will interest that part of the audience that themselves are kids and them some more. all in all, with a more concentrated screenplay and better screen space management the film do itself a lot of good.
Just to unite a pair of lovers, Ganesh (Ram) has to feign love to Divya (Kajal). But to even do that or reach her, he has to come up with a series of dramas and antics to please the numerous kids living in the apartment where Divya too stays. He secures a flat adjacent to Divya’s and works hard at getting her attention. When she really does fall in love, it takes a minute for her to realise that Ganesh has been fooling her and she distances herself from him. The rest of the story is about how Divya plays hard to get and Ganesh tries his best to convince her that he really, indeed has fallen in love.
Director Saravanan uses the children to inject comic situations but he allows the children to dominate the story most of the time and ends up looking like a farce. Imagine kids dressing up like adults and knocking the doors of a neighbour to negotiate or talk about alliances, all you want to do is whack them. Too much kid stuff shows the director’s desperation, the comic premise betrays more of a concern for quick box-office bucks than any desire for comic invention. Also Ashish Vidyarthi’s presence looks pointless, it appears as if he has been created just to show Ganesh’s machoism.
Brahmanandam tearing of his assistant’s clothes to give Ganesh a warning is funny but it lasts less than a minute. If you are wondering why the filmmakers couldn’t find an apt title for the film, don’t get impatient, stay tuned till the Manmohan Desai like climax hits you like a bolt.

Reviews

went to see The Dark Crystal at the cinema when it was first released and recall that it wasn't entirely what the audience or I was really expecting. It was being promoted as being from Jim Henson, the man behind The Muppets, and as a fantasy tale using puppets and elaborate costumes to disguise the human performers. This it indeed is, but that doesn't mean it's a whimsical and folksy story; the clue is in the title. Just how dark parts of this story are must have been a concern to anyone who brought along young children and found them having nightmares about the horrible scaly Skeksis and their violent crab-like minions, the Garthim.

As an adult my take on the story of the urSkeks who became split into the Skeksis and urRu seemed much more engaging than I'd expected. I was also wowed by the brilliance of the Henson puppet shop, which never ceased to amaze me with their ability to obscure the true nature of their creations. In particular, the Landstriders are a work of pure genius, as is all the design work illustrator Brian Froud did for all the characters and extraordinary world they inhabit. The only jarring aspect of the design work I found was the appearance of the newly forged combination of Mystics and Skeksis, which exhibit few obvious evolutions of their source creatures. Given how related the two appeared, the resulting beings of their merger just don't sell their origins to my eye.

In retrospect, another weakness in presentation that niggles is the lack of neck movement the Gelfling characters exhibit, like they've all sustained a bad neck injury. Them having to turn their entire upper body to look behind is awkward and, unsurprisingly, Muppet-like.

Many felt at the time that while puppets could be engaging enough for 30 minutes or more, a 93 minute feature might be an unrealistic expectation. But Dark Crystal proved that it was an entirely practical premise given the immense talent of the Henson people. Without Dark Crystal I also can't see that productions like Farscape would ever have existed, and it was clearly influential in many fantasy films that came after it, like Return To Oz.

But the big problem The Dark Crystal has is that, while the design work is amazing and the concept high-brow, not much of this translates well into the characters or the plot. Given the running time, relatively little happens in the movie, and even those characters that get the most running time seem woefully underdeveloped.

After watching it again the word that kept retuning to my mind was ‘experimental', as so much of The Dark Crystal was. I think the mistake was to make so much of it experimental, as the narrative and characters could have been stronger without undermining the fantasy elements. The co-directors Jim Henson and Frank Oz did an acceptable job, but the importance of the visual styling overtook the other important storytelling aspects. As such, the end result is something of a victory for style over substance, but not one that I think was intended to be that way.

So how well does The Dark Crystal transfer to high definition? To be brutal, not that well, because some of it isn't shot well enough and it came from an era where expensive optical compositions ended up in the movie irrespective of if they worked.

The multi-generation optical are also granular in a way that contrasts the majority of the studio work, making them even more visually disrupting than they were on DVD, for example.

I suspect that this release is about as good as this movie is ever likely to get as I can't see anyone expending the time and money to recreate the optical effects digitally, even if they did get access to the source negatives. My reaction to the sound is that it's wonderful in places and somewhat strained in others.

The extras are also something of a disappointment, because they've almost all appeared before on the 25th Anniversary Edition DVD and they're all in standard definition. Most of them are promotional material created at the time, but the best extras are the two documentaries Reflections of the Dark Crystal: "Light on the Path of Creation" & "Shard of Illusion". These contain more recent interviews with production people, and the thoughts of designer Brian Froud are certainly worth the time to hear. Some items, like the deleted scenes, are in such low quality that they look like they came from an old VHS tape someone kept from the production.

The problem is that until a new chapter in The Dark Crystal chronicles is created, which is supposedly in the works, there isn't really anything new to say about this movie.

Overall, I enjoyed revisiting The Dark Crystal as it's some considerable time since I've seen it on TV. In many ways it's a flawed masterpiece, which shows much more imagination than it's ultimately able to deliver on. Blu-ray technology doesn't really do it many favours, but then I think that's true of many movies from the early eighties.

An examination of what went wrong for the dynamic, outspoken young football manager Brian Clough when he took over at Leeds United, the reigning champions in 1974.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Michael Sheen had a fascinating interview with HitFix.com where he talked about his film The Damned United. In the film, Sheen portrays Brian Clough during his time as the coach of U.K. football (American "soccer") Leeds United. The Damned United brought Sheen to Toronto recently for the Toronto International Film Festival (alongside Anna Kendrick for Up In The Air and Xavier Samuel for The Loved Ones) and was released in U.K. theate »

A few hours ago I spoke with Michael Sheen regarding his new movie “The Damned United”. While I’ll have much more on his new film soon, I was able to ask Michael about some of his other projects like “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, “Tron Legacy”, “Alice in Wonderland” and the “Underworld” franchise. So if you’d like to hear what Michael had to say about those projects, hit the jump.
The first thing Michael told me was he’s heard the rumors about a 4th “Underworld”, but no one has contacted him yet.
We then spoke about the next “Twilight” movie, “New Moon” and he revealed the main reason he took the role of Aro is because of his daughter. He also talked about working on Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and explained his love of the book and how the movie is going to be different. »
The Welsh actor reveals the late Nottingham Forest, Derby County and Leeds United manager's family refused to take a look at the script for The Damned United and turned down invites to see previews of the film.
Sheen can understand why they were dead set against the idea of seeing the movie, but he hopes they've since had the chance to check it out.
He tells WENN, "His family were against the film because they were very against the book that it was an adaptation of. The book is a very dark portrayal of Brian and we tried to celebrate him more in the film, but I understood why the family were very wary of the film.
"We offered to send them a copy of the script and they didn't want to look at that and we offered them private screenings of the film, but they didn't want that either. I hope they've seen the film since and realised we weren't trying to make him look bad." »

One film that American audiences probably won’t make as popular as all those listed above is the film he’s currently doing press for at the Toronto Film Festival. The Damned United is a soccer biopic about Brian Clough’s 44-day reign as the coach of Leeds United.

Let’s say we live in a world where you can only pick one. »

Yesterday was the big interview day at the “Couples Retreat” junket in Bora Bora. It was also a big day for the South Pacific mosquitoes to discover how tasty I could be. I have a feeling they’ll miss my sweet flesh more than I’ll miss the postcard perfect vistas here. But you don’t want to hear the whining of a guy working in Bora Bora. The day was unique for a variety of reasons. In keeping with the theme of my post the other day I’ll share with you some more useful life lessons I picked up.

Malin Akerman Makes A Delightful Margarita. God bless contrived interview settings because otherwise a scenario like this would be Highly unlikely to take place. From Hollywood Crush: It's pretty incredible that even in the most remote, exotic places of the world - you can still find "Twilight" fever. Case in point — I'm in Bora Bora for the "Couples Retreat" junket. It took 21 hours to get here from NYC, a transit time that included three different flights. If you look up Bora Bora on a map, you see it's literally in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. All of this meaning ... it's a gorgeously isolated island. Well, during some free time, Movies Editor Josh Horowitz and I decided to do some exploring on the mainland. So Josh, his lovely wife Jenny, and I hopped on a small boat to be whisked away to the tiny town of Vaitape. We were dropped off in the main marketplace, which was actually only a little strip of about four different shops.

Couples Retreat is coming to give all married couples a jolt of comedic therapy. Vince Vaughn headlines the film and it also stars Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman.
Nick Allen talked about the trailer for Couples Retreat back in July.
Jason Bateman is coming off the comedy Extract and here he talks about getting to have his character created just for him.
Jon Favreau has now been in six movies with his buddy Vince Vaughn (including this one) … can you name them all? I list them at the bottom of this post so you don’t have to be driven crazy.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the uncomfortable yoga scene. Kristen Bell talks about it here.
You’ll recognize Malin Akerman from either The Proposal and 27 Dresses (if you’re a girl) or Watchmen (if you’re a guy).

I.d rate the chances of Couples Retreat actually being funny as shockingly slim. But I.ll see it anyway and I might even enjoy it, for exactly the same reason I stop a minute and stare into a fish tank, should a glass contraption full of aquatic creatures float past my eye. Relaxation. Couples Retreat appears primarily to be pretty, scantily women hanging out in a beautiful setting with fat, disgusting men engaging in mildly titillating humor. It.s a fantasy really, a modern day Garden of Eden created right there on screen provided of course you too are a fat disgusting man. All that.s missing really are the feeders of Vaal. I guess that makes Vince Vaughn Vaal. Plot Summary

In the post-war, pre-Beatles London suburbs, a bright schoolgirl is torn between studying for a place at Oxford and the more exciting alternative offered to her by a charismatic older man

Reviews

An Education" is the story of a teenage girl's coming-of-age set in 1961 London, a city caught between the drab, post-war 1950s and the glamorous, more liberated decade to come.

Jenny (Carey Mulligan) stands on the brink of becoming a woman: a brilliantly witty and attractive 16-year-old whose suburban life is about to be blown apart by the utterly unsuitable 30-something David (Peter Sarsgaard).

Urbane and witty, David manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour). David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike). Just as Jenny's family's long-held dream of getting their brilliant daughter into Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life.

Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a bright young girl on the cusp of her 17th birthday who finds herself in a whirlwind romance with a much older David (Peter Sarsgaard). Prior to meeting David, Jenny was trying to excel in her life by going to a prep school to get into Oxford. Once she sees the lifestyle David can provide, one she never imagined might so easily be hers, she is hooked and thoughts of Oxford go out the window. Then, when things are looking pretty good for Jenny with the dashing (yet a little too smooth) David, the truth hits her like a ton of bricks. Jenny goes from being a bright eyed school girl to a sophisticated young lady and then all the way back to questioning if she really knows who she is at all. Any more info will ruin the story. Go watch it and enjoy! An Education won the Audience Choice award and the Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

It's 1961 and attractive, bright 16-year-old schoolgirl, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is poised on the brink of womanhood, dreaming of a rarefied, Gauloise-scented existence as she sings along to Juliette Greco in her Twickenham bedroom. Stifled by the tedium of adolescent routine, Jenny can't wait for adult life to begin. Meanwhile, she's a diligent student, excelling in every subject except the Latin that her father is convinced will land her the place she dreams of at Oxford University.

One rainy day, her suburban life is upended by the arrival of an unsuitable suitor, 30-ish David (Peter Sarsgaard). Urbane and witty, David instantly unseats Jenny's stammering schoolboy admirer, Graham (Matthew Beard). To her frank amazement, he even manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour), and effortlessly overcomes any instinctive objections to their daughter's older, Jewish suitor.

Very quickly, David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike). David replaces Jenny's traditional education with his own version, picking her up from school in his Bristol roadster and whisking her off to art auctions and smoky clubs.

Under the pretext of an introduction to C.S. Lewis, David arranges to take Jenny on a weekend jaunt to Oxford with Danny and Helen. Later, using an ingenious mixture of flattery and fibbery, he persuades her parents to allow him to take their only daughter to Paris for her 17th birthday. David suggests that his "Aunt Helen" will once again act as a chaperone. Jack and Marjorie do not know that Jenny has chosen the date and place to lose her virginity.

Paris is all that Jenny imagined it would be, sex with David somewhat less so. On her return to Twickenham, Jenny's school friends are thrilled with her newfound sophistication but her headmistress (Emma Thompson) is scandalised and her English teacher Miss Stubbs (Olivia Williams) is deeply disappointed that her prize pupil seems determined to throw away her evident gifts and certain chance of higher education.

Just as the family's long-held dream of getting their brilliant daughter into Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life. Will David be the making of Jenny or her undoing?

When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice.

Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die.

Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton's high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton's crosshairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

Plot

In 1974, a hot headed 19-year-old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawed-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post office. After making off with only £26.18, he was swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to seven years in jail. Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. During that time, Michael Petersen, the boy, faded away and 'Charles Bronson,' his superstar alter ego, took center stage.

Reviews

A man with such a notorious, almost mythical, persona as Charles Bronson requires as seriously full-on and committed performance. And looking at actor Tom Hardy you wouldn't think he'd end up being the guy, not least because he just doesn't look like the man. But Hardy is clearly determined to prove any naysayers wrong, as by gaining over three stone and putting on what seems like Bronson's actual skin and not just a costume, Hardy is as convincing and committed as one could hope for. He gives what you could fittingly describe as a force of nature performance, one which commands attention for every minute he appears on screen (which, thankfully, is almost the whole time), distracting the viewer from any flaws the film has. Whatever acting awards are nearest Bronson's release, Hardy definitely deserves them for this career-defining performance.

It's undoubtedly a violent film in a sardonic, Clockwork Orange way which could understandably be taken as a film that glorifies violence. Male viewers are more likely to get a kick out of the film in a Fight Club sort of way, but it is true to some extent that the violence is just there and nothing more. It's never really clear what director Nicholas Winding Refn wants to say about Bronson; is it bad he has spent 34 years of his life behind bars? Or does he deserve all that he gets? Is the violence he commits so prolifically something to be looked down on? Or it justified as some sort of release of male aggression? It's an entertaining tale but without much meaning to it, at least not a very clear one.

Most biopics adopt a style of showing the central figure grow up, go through whatever they did in their field, and by the end leave things either ambiguous (see, for example, Walk The Line) or close everything off (often with the person's death). But Bronson almost seems on a mission to be unique in the genre, and it succeeds almost on that note alone. It may not have the emotional resonance some biopics do, but that is an almost welcome sacrifice if what we get is so different from what we've seen before.

Bronson tells of the life of Michael "Charles Bronson" Petersen, a man described by the media as "the most violent prisoner in Britain." The film chronicles his 34 years in prison, showcasing various chunks throughout that time of the violence which has caused him such a long stay on the inside (he hasn't actually killed anyone), and even his brief brush with freedom partway into his sentence.

Chris Rock explores the wonders of African-American hairstyles. |
Behind the scenes here lurk a few dudes who have brought us some of the finest short-attention-span TV, so it's no wonder GH is -- I'm going to try and describe it without any puns -- crammed with quick testimonials from a range of familiar faces and sociopolitical without a heavy hand. I'm surprised it's being released in the fall, however, since it feels like this comedy-doc could have swapped places with The Cove. Meanwhile, remember a few years back when documentaries such a Spellbound broke through into mainstream pop culture? I hope GH brings back the Fun Documentary era.

Synopsis

Basically, 'Good hair' is defined as straight hair. That concept has social and political implications, and fuels a billion dollar industry.
When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head. Rock visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Filmmaker Jeff Stilson follows Rock to hair salons, barber shops, celebrities' homes and the annual Bonner Bros. Hair Show, an African-American hairstyle expo that culminates in the Hair Battle Royale, in which where star-status stylists - including Tanya Crume, Kevin Kirk, Jason Griggers, Freddie J and Derek J -- stage spectacular, outrageously costumed, carefully choreographed performances in which they style hair while dancing and doing acrobatics to win the best stylist title.

Interviewed at length, actress Nia Long reveals that she's completely obsessed with her weave, and that meeting up with a lover in the shower -- where her hair might get wet and nappy -- is more intimate than getting into bed with him. Also interviewed, women who work as teachers, secretaries and other professions say they spend a small fortune, even go into debt, to have their hair relaxed or get weaves. And, assuring equal opportunity, Rock interviews African-American men, some of whom pay for the 'good hair' of the women in their lives, admitting that it's important to them, too, or raising their eyes as an expression of 'what can you
Beneath Chris Rock's smart and extremely funny commentary is a solidly researched study about what are in fact racist attitudes towards physical appearance. People with 'good hair' (i.e. straight hair) get better jobs, are more popular, have better sex lives.

On the flip side, 'Nappy' hair is ugly. 'Nappy' hair is also black. And, the preoccupation with fitting the popular, media-supported concept of beauty has given rise to an industry that attracts billions of consumer dollars every year -- dollars that could and would otherwise be used to fill more substantial needs, such as education and eating better quality foods. The film is provocative and very moving, especially when you see that the sometimes torturous process of hair straightening begins when African-American women are just tots of two or three years of age. "Yes, it hurts," they say. So, the film raises a serious question about whether the popular slogan "Black is Beautiful" should include natural hair.
