Movie Preview & Trailer: Holy Rollers (2010), It's always heartening to see A-list Hollywood talent supporting independent features. The latest example is Jesse Eisenberg, who's red hot thanks to Zombieland, and now stars in Holy Rollers, a little film that will need every last bit of his emerging star power to find an audience. The drama, which was inspired by real events (in the 1990's) and won its share of praise at the Sundance Film Festival, casts Eisenberg as Sam Gold, a young Hasid from a deeply religious Orthodox Jewish section of Brooklyn, New York. Sam is supposed to be on the path to becoming a rabbi, which involves marrying a girl of his family's choosing and, in the process, taking his family to the next level financially and socially. However, Sam veers completely off the path, tasting the thrill of drug deals, the power of money, and the fast-lane life of people just over the bridge in New York City.
More specifically, Sam makes the acquaintance of a charming, slick neighbor, Yosef (Justin Bartha), who in turn introduces him to Jackie (Danny A. Abeckaser). It happens that Jackie is an Israeli drug dealer, and Sam agrees to transport illicit packages for Jackie and Jackie's girlfriend, Rachel (Ari Graynor). Sam quickly finds his place with Jackie and Rachel, but soon enough he ends up in way over his head, indulging in ecstacy, developing feelings for Rachel, and infuriating and embarrassing his family. So he must decide: God? Family? This dangerous new road? And even if he makes the right choice, is it already too late to change course and right the damage he's caused? Holy Rollers, not surprisingly, took years to get funded, but director Kevin Asch fought the good fight. More remarkably, he found a distributor that's releasing it little more than a year after the completion of filming. And, in addition to Eisenberg, the impressive young cast includes Justin Bartha from The Hangover, Ari Graynor from Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist and Fringe, and Eisenberg's younger sister, Hallie Kate Eisenberg, a former child actor -- anyone remember her in Paulie (1998) or Bicentennial Man? -- who agreed to play Sam's sister as a favor to her sibling. Survival of the Dead Movie reviews : Building around a minor character from Diary of the Dead, Survival follows a small band of soldiers who have abandoned their posts to try and find themselves a safe place to live, a contained place, a place where a low population will mean an equally low potential for undead attack. And they think they have discovered just the place with Plum Island. But the undead aren't the only threat in this world and Plum Island is already populated by humans, a pair of clans - the O'Flynns and the Muldoons - that have been clashing for generations and see no reason to stop now. Wars weren't enough to stop their aggression, so why should a few zombies? With Survival of the Dead Romero attempts a return to form - a move away from the large scale epic of Land of the Dead and experiments in form with Diary of the Dead in favor of a film more in his classic style, one that fuses comedy with horror and graphic gore with social commentary. But rather than being a triumph, Survival just feels flat and tired, a film failed by a weak script and even weaker performances. The thrust of the satiric element is clear - the futility of conflict and mankind's self destructive nature - but the execution is incredibly clumsy, the clan conflict that rests at the center of the film extraordinarily cliched. None of the characters are ever allowed to grow beyond caricature, their aims and goals implausible in the extreme. While the gore quotient is certainly high enough to satisfy most horror fans - and there are several very inventive kill sequences - the effects are only mid-grade and the performances and script weak enough that it is difficult to engage with any of the characters enough to actually care much about what happens to them on screen.
When Romero returned to the zombie genre with Land of the Dead it was met with much excitement by fans only to be widely turned on and declared unsatisfying. And while Diary of the Dead generally fared a little better, old school fans were still not convinced and the film did little to draw new fans into the fold. And with Survival coming in as the weakest of the three someone simply needs to point out to the aging master that its time to stop. He's adding nothing to his canon with these films, accomplishing nothing but diluting his own body of work.

MacGruber Movie Reviews : Amir Bednarsh was given the opportunity to see an early screening of MacGruber, and posted an early test screening review on The Vertex. It should be noted that this is not a review of the final film, but thoughts on an early cut of the movie (sans final effects, edits, music…etc). Basically, everything could change. I was wary that it would follow in the path of prior Saturday Night Live films. Most sketch concepts generally flourish when they’re just that - sketches. A full-length comedy falls into the trap of relying on the same old recycled jokes to the point where you not only loathe the film, but you retroactively dislike the sketches they were based on. You might not believe me when I tell you this, but there’s no doubt: MacGruber was amazing.
Unlike other comedies, MacGruber isn’t completely tongue-in-cheek. The characters surrounding MacGruber play their roles more seriously, resulting in outstanding rapport between the hero and his cohorts. …. The second star of the film is the hilarious and talented Kristen Wiig, who, as usual, delivers the performance expected of a comedian on top of her game. … MacGruber is the best SNL film since Wayne’s World back in 1992. It manages to take the concept of the original sketch and infuse it with new life. It generally works at all times, and manages to combine physical comedy, witty banter, and awkward sex. Alamar (To The Sea) Spanish Movie Reviews : "Alamar", the second film by director Pedro González-Rubio, deceived me. From a distance it seemed something superficial. A film that grabs its audience by merely setting it in a location many would like to spend their holiday; an idyllic coral reef. However, that would have been too easy. The fact that it took home a Tiger Award and placed number 10 at the audience award (with an average of 4.365 out of 5) at this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam hints that preconception had to be quickly adjusted.
Mixing documentary with fiction, González-Rubio brings an intimately made piece about a five-year-old boy called Natan that goes on a holiday. It isn't just a holiday though. Opening with a series of photos we find out Natan is the son of the Italian Roberta Palombini and Mexican Jorge Machado who were once happy together but ended up divorcing. Natan's mom is relocating to Rome and that is why the little Natan will spend a final summer with his father at the Banco Chinchorro, the richest coral reef in Mexico. Following a simple but effective and creative title shot (a look at sea through a window Jorge made in his hut), the two enjoy their last days together with grandpa Nestor. Just swimming, fishing, playing, learning about and from their environment and relaxing. Nothing more, nothing less.
Now it would have been easy to have kept things at shooting pretty pictures (yes, everything has indeed been beautifully shot!), but director González-Rubio instead managed to also successfully portray the relationship between son, father and grandfather. Their relationship is being threatened, just like their surroundings (Banco Chinchorro is the second largest coral reef in the world with a still an intact ecosystem, but is threatened by urbanization) and even though a separation between Natan and Jorge is near and inevitable, González-Rubio wisely decided not to make things melodramatic. He portrays it with the tranquility of the sea water and like the days that just pass in film; peaceful and well-ballanced.

Greenberg hollywoodMovie Reviews : Greetings again from the darkness. Noah Baumbach wrote and directed the excellent "The Squid and the Whale", and it is with "Greenberg" that he really makes a statement as an independent filmmaker to anticipate. The second gem is always the most elusive. That said, I am not sure I can recommend this movie to very many people, despite all the good things I am about to write.
This is the first Ben Stiller role that actually seems to fit him. His typical role is as a punchline. Here, he plays a guy who recently suffered a nervous breakdown and is now house-sitting for his rich brother, whose family is vacationing in Vietnam. Throughout the movie, Greenberg states he is concentrating on doing "nothing" right now. Of course, that is his defense mechanism for being unable to connect or communicate with any real person. Yes, that sounds bleak ... and it is. Yet, it is also fascinating and thought-provoking.
Despite Stiller's strong turn, Greta Gerwig (as Florence) proves to be the heart of the story. She is the family assistant to Greenberg's brother and finds herself oddly attracted to Greenberg's vulnerable state. This is my first exposure to Ms. Gerwig and I find her fascinating as an actress. She has a natural openness on screen and is certainly no glamour-gal. Instead she comes across as a very real 25 year old trying to make sense of life - especially her own. In addition to Ms. Gerwig, Rhys Ifans provides outstanding support work as Greenberg's long ago band mate. This is the polar opposite of Ifan's character in "The Boat that Rocked" as here is just a guy putting together a grown up life for himself. Life During Wartime English Film Reviews : In writer/director Todd Solondz's part sequel/part variation on his acclaimed film Happiness, three sisters and the people they love struggle to find their places in an unpredictable and volatile world where the past haunts the present and imperils the future. The question of forgiveness and its limits threads throughout a series of intersecting love stories, offering clarity and, perhaps, alternatives to the comforts of forgetting. Ten years have passed since a series of shocking and catastrophic revelations shattered the world of the Jordan family. Now, ghosts circle and loom, trouble and console as sisters Joy (Shirley Henderson), Trish (Allison Janney), and Helen (Ally Sheedy) are each embroiled in their own unique dilemmas. As these characters and storylines dovetail, expand and collide, they create an emotionally resonant portrait of prisoners of love and life. Alternately hilarious and tragic, outrageous and poignant, Life During Wartime is an audacious comedy with unexpected resonance. What's it about? 'Wartime' could be quite literal, as America is still at war in Afghanistan. Or perhaps the war is an allusion to the troubles in Israel, this being an overtly Jewish picture much of the time. Wartime has other allusions though - family, lovers, and the concomitant pain and death - and all this is in keeping with the faintly soap-operatic excess of the film.
Some good things first. The pre-title sequence could be sold to cinemas as a short in its own right. Michael K. Williams may never get a role as good as Omar (in The Wire) but he deserves it - the man has range. Opposite him is the remarkable Shirley Henderson, an almost perfect Solondz character-actor. These two, along with Paul Reubens as the geek- spectral Andy provide the backbone to the film where sorrow and self- pity can suddenly run up against twisted, spitting malevolence. Exploring the middle-ground cats' cradle of forgiveness is the brilliant Alison Janney with wonderful support from Dylan Riley Snyder as her sharp but immature son Timmy. Ciaran Hinds deserves plaudits for playing his difficult role exactly as it should be, i.e. grizzled but lucid and with a hint of dangerous masculinity. Yet the film doesn't land any substantive punches because it's just too tough a topic. Solondz's sense of style is cultured and precise - effective - but leaves little room for the mental sidestepping that the audience must do. There's a hopscotch game of melodrama, allegory, humour and even glamour which cannot sustain the blunt existential abyss at the lip of the bruised heart of the film. Or maybe its so depressing I can't bear to consider it myself. 6/10

In the sequel to the 2008 film, the women are going through some serious changes and we’re not talking about menopause. Carrie and Big are married but are losing their spark, Charlotte is being over run by her children, Miranda is overwhelmed by work, and as usual Samantha is trying to hold on to her fleeting youth. Who are these women? Are they supposed to be the actresses we all know and love because they look like CGI animations. Sometimes the people in the photo editing department need to layoff the airbrush tool, it’s not helping! Kim Catrall looks like Sharon Stone in this poster and Parker looks like a banshee. It’s so unnecessary because all four of them are beautiful without all of the “additional help.”

Sans laisser de traces French Film Synopsis: Deux choses frappent avant d'avoir vu le premier film de Gregory Vigneron : le choix du titre qui se prête à la moquerie facile si le résultat n'est pas mémorable et sa formidable affiche qui donne incroyablement envie de voir de quoi tout ceci retourne. A la sortie de la projection, on fait les comptes et on se dit que Sans laisser de traces a le mérite d'éviter les railleries et que son affiche est tout de même trompeuse sur la marchandise. On s'attendait à un thriller haletant, on est face à une version light d'un récit rocambolesque tendance paranoïaque comme les affectionnaient les cinéastes des années 70.
Une modestie du projet qui se retourne un peu contre le film dans la dernière demi-heure, laissant frustrées nos attentes suscitées par une maîtrise admirable de la mise en place de l'histoire. Il faut dire qu'avec Benoît Magimel comme guide principal, le débutant Vigneron a vu plus que juste. Dès les premiers instants, on est aux côtés de ce jeune pdg d'un grand groupe industriel qui souffre intérieurement d'avoir eu sa carrière bâtie sur un mensonge, un vol. Etienne est un usurpateur. Pourtant, même lorsque son ami d'enfance (François-Xavier Demaison, parfait en pote boulet...en apparence) commet l'irréparable et l'entraîne dans une succession de mauvaises décisions, l'empathie pour le personnage reste fortement présente. C'est tout l'art de Magimel de rendre intime et touchant les errances de cet anti-héros. Avec une psychologie des protagonistes solidement établie même si parfois à l'extrême limite du cliché (la femme, les beaux parents, le flic méfiant,...) et un univers visuel chiadé (Bruxelles donne un côté hors du temps au récit), Sans laisser de traces déroule une mécanique bien huilée (Tirard et Vigneron ne sont pas des scénaristes reconnus pour rien), parvient à faire presque oublier que tout ceci n'est pas des plus originaux et captive son public jusqu'à un final malheureusement bien démonstratif et pataud. Jusque là, tout allait bien...
Sans laisser de traces French Movie Reviews: It's not a drama, neither a crime movie. Just the story of a budding young executive - Magimel, ambitious and somewhere ruthless, who realizes that he made some mistakes: stealing the formula of a famous industrial product from a poor chemist. In the meanwhile, he meets by chance an old friend of his - Demaison, and talks to him about his guiltiness feelings. Demaison advises his pal to go to the chemist and tell him everything, to get rid of this culpability.
That's when all falls down, for the two leads. Because the chemist decides to blackmail Magimel... I won't spoil the feature any further... But there is something here that reminds me Dominique Moll's HARRY, UN AMI QUI VOUS VEUT DU BIEN. Demaison in Sergi Lopez character. Any one will have realized that Hitchcock influenced very much this movie, as many many others... I won't see it again, not enough dark or desperate. But it is worthwhile as a good time waster. Good suspense from the beginning to the end.

The Father of My Children French Movie Reviews : Seeing "Le père de mes enfants" you would think that its writer-director, Mia Hansen-Løve, is in the last part of her career, that she has gone through the ups and downs of a long life, has made peace with it and is now able to contemplate the world with wisdom and understanding. And you would be totally wrong. Mia Hansen-Løve was only twenty-seven when she made this profound film. She took her inspiration from two real-life models, Humbert Balsan, a brilliant film producer who took his life at the age of 51 when he realized he would go bankrupt, and Donna Balsan, his wife, who, for all her grief, did her utmost to save Ognon Pictures, her husband's company, after his death. But mind you, this is no straight biopic. For instance, the names have been changed; Grégoire Canvel (the screen equivalent of Balsan) has three kids instead of two; the way he kills himself is different; Bela Tarr, the Hungarian director Balsan had trouble with at the time of his death, has become Stig Janson, a Swedish helmer; and so on… Even Mia Hansen-Løve herself, who is part of the story, is represented indirectly, by Arthur,a young film maker that Grégoire wants to produce but finally can't ( a reference to "Tout est pardonné", Hansen-Løve's former film, whose production was taken over by Pelléas Films after Balsan's suicide). Oddly enough, Arthur happens to be interpreted by Igor Hansen-Løve, Mia's own brother. Sure, "Le père de mes enfants" is not the exact telling of the life of one of the most original producers of French cinema, but it is very close to reality and perhaps even closer than if it was a mere biopic, since what Mia Hansen-Løve tries to do is to capture the essence of a man's soul, not only to piece facts together. To achieve this end, the writer-director divides her story into two distinct parts. The first one presents Grégoire in his professional as well as in his family life, both tending to intermingle to the despair of Sylvia, Grégoire's wife. The long opening sequence during which Grégoire uses his mobile phone whatever the place he is in is explicit in this respect. At his country house on the weekend, Grégoire is the loving father of three delightful daughters and Sylvia's faithful companion. At his Paris office he is an industrious man, the enthusiastic, tireless, staunch defender of auteur film-making, whether French or foreign. But money troubles become more and more insistent, preventing him from indulging his passion serenely. The documentary aspect is excellent: the account of the way the small production company works day after day is very realistic without being boring. But interesting as this part is, it would not be enough to make "Le père de mes enfants" something else but a good film. What makes it really outstanding is the second part in which Mia Hansen-Løve explores the consequences of Grégoire's suicide on his nearest and dearest and on his collaborators. And she does it with a truly magic touch. She first very intelligently disposes of the set pieces of the discovery of the corpse and of the funeral. Instead, she directly cuts to the deep sorrow experienced by Grégoire's wife and daughters, the feeling of unacceptable loss, of resentment against the deceased who abandoned them. Then she shows how the characters evolve, slowly coming to terms with the situation, gradually realizing that Grégoire's life has been so rich, has brought them so much that he is now part of them, that what he accomplished in the artistic domain before committing suicide has not disappeared. They know now that his spirit will go on living, through his films, through the persons they have become thanks to him… A sad story but which does not make you sad in the end, for Mia Hansen-Løve doesn't take morbid delight in the evocation of death and the damages it causes. On the contrary, it is life she pays a tribute to when she films wonderful scenes of family life with or without Grégoire, often in a sunny atmosphere. In the end, we get the comforting feeling that arrogant Death finally admits defeat.

StreetDance 3D Hollywood Movie Reviews : Although the 3D elements did not add much of a dimension to the proceedings.... I found Streetdance... Energetic, Pulsating and a terrificly choreographed piece of cinematic entertainment - which will appeal to the "more mature audience" as well as its teen target market. The storyline revolves around Carly (Nichola Burley) and her Streetdance crew, who have to contend with the loss of their Dance leader and also discover they have nowhere to rehearse. With time running out, Carly must win the respect of her dancing troupe and find a suitable place to train for the final of the UK Street Dance Competition. While delivering sandwiches to a local Ballet school, salvation and a glimmer of hope comes to Carly in the guise of the Ballet schoolmistress, Helena (played by Charlotte Rampling).
She offers Carly the use of the school's facilities provided Carly agrees to instill some of the Streetdance intensity and passion into her lacklustre and classicly trained Ballet students. The result is a glorious clash of cultures, egos and temperaments.
The dance routines from Diversity & Flawless etc were perfectly executed and a joy to watch. And while it is not in the class of "Dirty Dancing", Streetdance's energetic footwork and the "ballet" cross-over storyline makes it standout from many of its contemporaries. Yes, there are relationship issues (Love and Distrust) between the dancers, but it's the StreetDancing - which covers every style of dancing - that wins out in the end. A cross-over section of the"young and not so young" preview audience were already asking when is Streetdance 2 being released

Four Lions Movie Reviews : Treating a taboo topic with broad comedy is dangerous business, as it risks trivialising something serious while offending rather a lot of people. Fortunately, these filmmakers are smart enough to get away with it.
Omar (Ahmed) is a shopping mall guard with a wife (Kalidas) and son, plus chucklehead pals Waj, Barry and Fessel (Novak, Lindsay and Akhtar) who like him aspire to be jihadists. Omar and Waj even go to a Pakistan training centre, but when things go wrong there, they decide to prove their devotion with a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, Barry has drafted in jokester Hassan (Ali), and after building and, erm, testing a few bombs, four of them head for London as suicide bombers. Filmmaker Morris based this on years of research into what really goes on in terrorism cells, during which he found that basic human stupidity is alive and well even here. The script is beefed up with astute dialog from the writers of In the Loop and Peep Show, as well as smart improv from the cast, which means that the humour is based on characters rather than situations. This clever approach makes the film both thoroughly entertaining and shrewdly telling.
Even so, we never have a clue what makes them so willing to sacrifice their lives. They're normal working-class Brits with Western-style aspirations, and the Sheffield location echoes that other film about normal guys desperate to be noticed: The Full Monty. Yet besides Omar, these men are such morons that we're amazed that they actually manage to accomplish anything. And the cops aren't much more efficient than they are.
