PETA urges people to free Paul, psychic octopus

Berlin, Jul 10: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the Animal rights group is demanding the release of Paul, the psychic octopus, who has become a global star for his FIFA World Cup predictions.
Bruce Friedrich, PETA spokesperson said that they were urging people to sign an online petition demanding Paul's release.
"No animal deserves to be confined to a tiny tank and we're hoping that Paul's popularity, or in Germany notoriety, will cause people to think a little bit more about the inner lives of octopuses."
The move comes after death threats from German fans, who had said that they want Paul fried or turned into a paella for betraying the country by correctly guessing Spain's victory over Germany in the 2010 FIFA world cup semi final.
Paul, from Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, had predicted the outcome of all six of Germany's matches by choosing to eat food from boxes adorned with the flags of Germany and its rivals.
Meanwhile, the eight-legged oracle has predicted that Spain will win the World Cup final, and Germany will emerge victorious in the battle for third place over Uruguay.

The truth behind Paul's winning streak

Psychic or just plain phony? If there was any reason to believe that a crystal ball is hiding in that bulbous head of Paul the octopus, be warned: This article might just disappoint.
Some marine biologists and experts say it's more than likely that Paul doesn't have the gift of prophecy after all. What's more likely is that he's learned to recognize the German flag.
The 2-year-old octopus, who was born in England and now lives in a German aquarium, has become a World Cup phenomenon after correctly predicting the winners in all six of the German national team's matches.
"He has a run that many gamblers will only ever dream of," said Tony LaCasse, a spokesman for the New England Aquarium. "Paul is running a remarkable series of picks, but I honestly doubt that he has extrasensory abilities."
During each prediction, two mussel-filled acrylic boxes labeled with a team's flag are lowered into his tank. Whichever box he chooses conveys the winning team.
The eight-tentacled oracle has been relatively consistent, plopping himself over the German box in his first few predictions. But he drew cries of despair from assembled watchers before the semifinal round, when he lingered over the box for the German flag before opting for the Spanish flag instead. Spain won the match 1-0.
For the final game of the World Cup, Paul picked Spain, again, to win against the Netherlands.
Octopi are among the most intelligent sea creatures in the world, said Mike Henley, an animal keeper at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Being keen learners and natural hunters, they quickly figure out how to maneuver and finagle objects in the wild in order to sustain themselves.
Yet when kept in captivity, as Paul has been, they must often be trained to accept prepared food, Henley said.
LaCasse said that at the New England Aquarium, which has a giant Pacific octopus, marine biologists usually give the animals Plexiglas boxes with different latches, lids and arrangements to see if they are able to retrieve their food.
And it's this ability to pick things up quickly that might explain why Paul is consistently picking the winning team.
"Looking at the series of predictions, it appears that this may have been a learned task," said Dr. Jean Boal, a marine biology professor at Millersville University in Pennsylvania.
Boal, who has worked with cephalopods for more than 20 years, believes that Paul's first pick may have just been pure luck and that he has been picking the German flag since his Euro 2008 days because the sea creature has learned to do so.
"It's a simple form of conceptual learning," she said.
By recognizing shapes and patterns, octopi will learn to gravitate toward them and even pick up skills, such as opening a jar or a box, that will lead them a food treat.
"They are very attentive to people. It's possible to train them, even unwittingly," Boal said.
But what about the times that he didn't pick the German flag?
Part of their learning process, Boal said, is that "once in a while, they might choose something else."
Then what about the red and yellow in the German and Spanish flags that Paul has been consistently attracted to?
There's no truth in that either, experts say. While octopi have excellent eyesight, they're colorblind.
"They don't have color vision, but they are able to see different shades of gray," said Richard Learner, curator of fishes at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland.
"If anything, you have to factor distance and his trained abilities into this whole mystery of Paul's psychic powers."
Paul's trainer, Oliver Walenciak, could not be immediately reached for comment.
Henley, the Smithsonian Zoo animal keeper, said that fans will have to wait until Sunday to see whether the octopus will be able to prove to the world his powers.
"It'll be amazing to see what he does next," Henley said. "He's just gotten lucky every time. We should take him to Vegas."

Amateur unearths 52,000 Roman coins worth $1m

London, England (CNN) -- An amateur treasure hunter armed with a metal detector has found over 52,000 Roman coins worth $1 million buried in field, one of the largest ever such finds in the UK, said the British Museum.
Dave Crisp, a hospital chef, came across the buried treasure while searching for "metal objects" in a field near Frome, Somerset in southwestern England.
Initially, Crisp found 21 coins, but when he unearthed the pot, he knew he needed archaeological help to excavate them.
The hoard contains 766 coins bearing an image of the Roman general Marcus Aurelius Carausius, who ruled Britain independently from AD 286 to AD 293 and was the first Roman emperor to strike coins in Britain.
Somerset County Council archaeologists excavated the pot -- a type of container normally used for storing food -- it weighed 160kg (350 pounds) and contained 52,500 coins.
The hoard was transferred to the British Museum in London where the coins were cleaned and recorded.
The coins date from AD 253 to 293 and most of them are made of debased silver or bronze.
Roger Bland, Head of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum, told CNN: "Dave [Crisp] did the right thing, he didn't try to dig it all out. This is the largest ever find in a single pot and the second largest ever [in the UK].
"We think that whoever buried it didn't intend to come back to recover it. We can only guess why people buried treasure, some buried savings, others because they feared an invasion, perhaps this was an offering to the Gods."
Bland said the coins were probably worth about $1 million.
Dave Crisp, from Devizes in Wiltshire, told CNN: "At the time when I actually found the pot I didn't know what size it was but when the archaeologists came and started to uncover it, I was gobsmacked, I thought 'hell, this is massive.'"
Crisp, who describes himself as a "metal detectorist," unearthed the pot in April, although the discovery was officially announced on Thursday. Crisp told CNN he would have to split the value of the find with the farmer who owns the field in which he discovered the treasure.
Somerset Coroner Tony Williams is scheduled to hold an inquest on July 22 to formally determine whether the find is subject to the Treasure Act 1996. This would help towards determining a value of the hoard should any individual or organization want to buy it.

Previews:
There are those who ask why FIFA bother with a third place playoff game. The last thing the beaten semi-finalists want is yet another match; they would rather be on the plane home licking their wounds and dreaming of what might have been. But FIFA has declared this anti-climax goes on for at least this year’s tournament and thus Germany will play Uruguay at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on Saturday 10 July 2010.

Germany So Far in the FIFA World Cup

Those who hadn’t nipped off to watch a bit of paint drying during an incredibly dull first half of Germany’s semi-final against Spain will have been pleased not to have missed what eventually turned into a football match in the second half. Germany though had no answer to a Spanish side that wore them down through clever passing and eventually claimed their 1-0 win through a powerful header by Carles Puyol with twenty minutes to go.

Before that game, Germany were buzzing. After demolishing England 4-1 in the Round of 16, they followed it with a crushing 4-0 defeat of Argentina, rated as one of the best teams in the tournament.

That was the third time Germany scored four goals in this tournament, beating Australia 4-0 in the first group game before losing 1-0 to Serbia and then beating Ghana by the same score.
After a controversial win over Ghana in the quarter-finals, Uruguay lost all their remaining friends in Africa; many were still upset at the role they played in knocking the hosts South Africa out in the group stage.
That said, they showed little of the nerves that a hostile crowd can instil during their semi-final against the Netherlands and came preciously close to taking the match into extra time after being 3-1 down.
A lesser team might have folded after a wonder strike by Giovanni van Bronckhorst gave the Netherlands an early lead, but Uruguay hit back with a Diego Forlan long-range strike just before half time. The Dutch took the lead again with twenty minutes to go through Wesley Sneijder, and this time it was Uruguay’s turn to feel aggrieved as there was more than a suspicion of offside. When Arjen Robben headed a third three minutes later, it looked all over for the South Americans. But they were not going down without a fight and pulled one back in injury time through Maximiliano Pereira and then gave their opponents a nervous couple of minutes as they pressed for an equaliser that never came.
Luis Suarez will probably be back for this game after missing the semi-final through suspension following his handball that robbed Ghana of a quarter final victory. Luis Suarez was also the Uruguay hero in the Round of 16, scoring twice to give them a 2-1 win over South Korea. Uruguay got to the knockout stage as group winners with victories against Mexico and South Africa following a nervous goalless draw with France.

Football Betting Odds For Germany vs Uruguay

Football betting tips: Germany are clear favourites across a range of bookmakers with odds to one ranging from 1.60 to 1.74. The spread for a Uruguay win goes from 4.50 to 5.75. The odds for a draw on ninety minutes stretches from 3.45 to 3.75.

Watch Online Fresh News:Swami Nithyananda back in action, was in violation of freedom of speech,

Swami Nithyananda back in action, can preach again

Bangalore, Jul 10: Nodding to the argument that not letting Swami Nithyananda preach was in violation of freedom of speech, Karnataka High Court on Friday, Jul 9 waved a green flag for him to resume preaching again while relaxing his bail conditions.
The court has also permitted the sex scandal-tainted godman to report at the jurisdictional police station monthly once.
He can also apply for permission at the lower courts if he wished to leave the jurisdictional limits, said Justice Subhash B Adi after hearing the petitioner's plea.
Nithyananda, who has been slapped with several criminal charges including rape and unnatural sex, was given conditional bail on Jun 11. The court had asked him not to preach and to appear before the jurisdictional police once in 15 days. He, however, was allowed to conduct yoga and meditation sessions.
On Jun 25, the Swamiji filed a bail relaxation plea, in which he sought permission to preach. He also wanted the police to come to his ashram once in 15 days for verification, instead of him going to the station.
In another application filed on Thursday, Jul 8, Nithyananda has sought return of his belongings such as his laptop and mobile phone seized by the police. The plea is scheduled for hearing on Jul 16.
The sexcapades of the religious guru came to light in Mar 2010 when a sex tape showing him in compromising positions with a woman, reportedly Tamil actress Ranjitha, leaked to the media.
This sparked off public outrage and the police, which initiated a case against him for hurting religious sentiments found plenty of skeletons in his closet amounting to a pile up of a bundle of charges.

Watch Online News Amanda Knox: An American college student found guilty of murder in Italy

Amanda Knox spends another birthday in an Italian cell

Amanda Knox, the American college student found guilty of murder in Italy, celebrated another somber birthday party behind bars today. It's the third birthday she has spent in an Italian prison.
Knox, a former University of Washington student from Seattle, and known in Italy as "Angel Face," is 23-years-old today - with 23 more years to serve after being found guilty of killing her English roommate.

This morning her mother and sister came for the weekly visit bearing birthday gifts.
"We'll sing happy birthday for her and make the best of I," said Edda Mellas, Amanda's mother.
"(I'll) hold her, hug, hold her hand, the whole time it'll be good," said Amanda's sister Deanne Knox.
Her mother gave Amanda a summer dress as a gift.
Amanda's birthday wish: to cook crab cakes on the small stove in her cell.
"For someone in jail innocent she holding up she's being strong," said Mellas.
They were able to spend an hour with Amanda. It's hard inside - more than 100 degrees in her cell, no air conditioning.
To make it even harder on them all, there's the prospect of having Amanda's 26 year prison sentence increased.
Knox's appeal is scheduled to be heard in October but the prosecution has also appealed and is calling for a tougher sentence. If Amanda wins, she'll go free but if she loses she could face life in prison.
To make matters even worse, both Amanda and her parents face new, similar charges of defamation. By claiming in court that Italian police abused her when she was arrested, If she fails to prove it her
And her parents, who made the same claim when answering a reporter's question, could be fined and even face jail time in Italy as well. Amanda's cell-mate could be her own mother.
It's kind of amazing that after a murder conviction the authorities are not only going after her but after her family as well," says legal expert Dan Abrams
So, there isn't much for the Knox family to celebrate - but for a short time today, they saw a smile on Amanda's face.

Watch Online Fresh News: Mani, the Parakeet (Parrot), predicts Netherlands to win World Cup 2010

World Cup 2010 finals: Paul, the Octopus Vs Mani, the parrot

Bangalore, Jul 10: Looks like there is some competition for Paul, the octopus, as a parakeet in Singapore has taken a large bite into the psychic limelight by predicting that Netherlands (Holland) will win the FIFA World Cup 2010.
Mani, the parakeet's prediction came hours before the world-famous psychic Paul's prediction on Friday, Jul 9. The octopus who resides at Sea Life in Germany's Oberhausen prophesied that Spain will be winning their maiden World Cup title in 2010.
However, Mani seemed to believe that it is going to be the Dutch, who will be grabbing their first World Cup trophy. The fact that the parrot's prediction was contrary to the prophesy of the octopus, that had gained massive credibility over its past predictions, seemed to be fueling Mani's say to the media headlines.
According to Mani's master, Mr Muniyappan, the psychic Parakeet, like Paul, has a spotless record of accuracy. The parrot had reportedly picked up the right winners during the quarter finals and also favoured Spain over Germany in the semi-final tie.
