There were no real surprises at the box office last weekend as the only major new release, the highly anticipated fourth chapter of the popular Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife dominated with $27.7 million. It will have a hard time repeating that success this weekend, despite some of the best reviews in the franchise's history, with four new films including director Ben Affleck's second effort The Town and the much-talked-about high school film Easy a entering the competition.
Predicted to debut at number one is the new film from actor turned director Ben Affleck (Gone Baby Gone), which is already earning Oscar buzz, called The Town. The bank robbery film that takes place in Boston stars a stellar cast of actors which in addition to Affleck himself includes Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Blake Lively (Gossip Girl), Rebecca Hall (Please Give) and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation). Currently, the movie has an average rating of a 4.3 on our site. Out of the eight people who have rated the film, only four of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 7,000 views. Here is what our Official Reviewer had to say about the new movie: "The Town is a thrilling action movie, but deeply personal and moving as well. Ben Affleck takes a giant leap forward as an artist with this film."
Predicted to debut at number two this week is the Scarlet Letter themed high school comedy Easy A starring Emma Stone (Zombieland, Superbad). The film's talented cast also includes Oscar nominees Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Patricia Clarkson (Pieces of April) and Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) as well as Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Penn Badgley ((Gossip Girl), Amanda Bynes (Hairspray) and screen legend Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange). Currently, the movie has an average rating of a 3.6 on our site. Out of the seven people who have rated the film only two of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 7,000 views. Here is what our Official Reviewer had to say about the new movie: "Smart, slick and sexy, this is one of the best high school comedies in years. Paying homage to the classic films of the '80s it's clever, original and hilarious. Emma Stone gives a career making performance. This movie is her Pretty Woman!"
Debuting at number three this week is a new supernatural thriller based on a story written by the film's producer, director M. Night Shyamalan, called Devil. The film stars Chris Messina (Greenberg), Geoffrey Arend ((500) Days of Summer), Caroline Dhavernas (The Switch), Jacob Vargas (Death Race), Bokeem Woodbine (Ray) and Matt Craven (The Clearing). Currently, the movie has an average rating of a 4.6 on our site. Out of the eighteen people who have rated the film fourteen of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 24,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new movie: "This looks like a good movie. I got to go see this!"
Falling three places back from its debut last week is fourth chapter of the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife, based on the popular video game. Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) returns in the lead role and is accompanied by a talented cast of actors, which includes Ali Larter (Heroes), Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Boris Kodjoe (Surrogates) and Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy). Last weekend the movie made $8,648 on each of its 3,203 screens for a decent opening total of $27.7 million, which is almost half of its initial $60 million production budget. It is expected to earn an additional $12.7 million at the box office this weekend.
Rounding off the top five and falling three places from last week is the hip-hop heist film Takers. The movie boasts an all-star cast, which includes Paul Walker (Fast & Furious), Idris Elba(The Losers), Matt Dillon (Armored), Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith), Michael Ealy (Miracle at St. Anna), Jay Hernandez (Quarantine), Chris Brown (Stomp the Yard), T.I. (American Gangster), and Zoe Saldana (Avatar). While the movie dropped almost 43.9% last week from the previous week and was seen in 15 less theaters, it still earned roughly $2,784 on each of its 2,191 screens for a weekend total of $6.1 million. Now in just four weeks the movie has made over $48 million earning back its entire $32 million production cost and then some. It is expected to earn an additional $6.1 million at the box office this weekend.
The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:
Predicted to debut at number six this week is the new 3-D computer animated film Alpha and Omega. The movie stars a talented cast of voice actors including Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard), Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Christina Ricci (Speed Racer), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon 2), Larry Miller (Pretty Woman) and screen legend, the late Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 4.1 on our site. Out of the five people who have rated the film only three of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 7,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new movie: "Can't wait for this!"
Predicted to fall four places back from last week to number seven is the international espionage thriller starring Oscar winner George Clooney (Syriana), entitled The American. While the movie dropped almost 55.3% last week from the previous week, it was actually added in ten theaters and earned roughly $2,081 on each of its 2,833 screens for a weekend total of $5.8 million. Now in just three weeks the movie has made over $26 million earning back its entire $20 million production budget. It is expected to earn an additional $3.3 million at the box office this weekend.
Predicted to fall a drastic five places from last week to number eight is the long-awaited motion picture from visionary director Robert Rodriguez called Machete, which is based on the short film that was featured in his and Quentin Tarantino's movie Grindhouse. The film stars Danny Trejo (Heat) in the title role and also features a colorful cast of accomplished actors including Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar), Jeff Fahey (Lost), Cheech Marin (The Perfect Game), Don Johnson (Miami Vice), Steven Seagal (Half Past Dead), Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls) and Oscar winner Robert De Niro (Raging Bull). While the movie dropped an astonishing 63.2% last week from the previous week, it was actually added in eight theaters and earned roughly $1,568 on each of its 2,678 screens for a weekend total of $4.2 million. Now in almost three weeks the movie has made about $20.8 million earning back its entire $20 million production budget. It is expected to earn an additional $2.5 million at the box office this weekend.
Predicted to slip back four places to from last week to number nine is the romantic comedy about long distance relationships called Going the Distance. The movie boasts an all-star cast of comedic actors including Drew Barrymore (The Wedding Singer), Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard), Christina Applegate (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore), Ron Livingston (Office Space), Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Rob Riggle (The Hangover) and Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live). While the movie dropped almost 44.3% last week from the previous week, it earned roughly $1,266 on each of its 3,030 screens for a weekend total of $3.8 million. Now in almost three weeks of release the movie has only made around $14 million, which is not even close to earning back its $32 million production budget. It is expected to earn an additional $2.4 million at the box office this weekend.
Finally, predicted to drop four places from last week to number ten is the buddy-cop action/comedy The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes. While the movie dropped 36.7% last week from the previous week, it was shown on 361 less screens for a total of 2,246 and earned almost $1,491 on each for a weekend tally of $3.3 million. Now in just over a month and a half the movie has done extremely well grossing over $112.4 million and earning back its entire $100 million production budget. Super 8 Gets Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning
September 18th, 2010
The first two cast members for Super 8, director J.J. Abrams' highly secretive sci-fi ode to all-things Steven Spielberg, have finally been announced, though their roles are being closely guarded at this time. According to New York's Vulture, both Elle Fanning, younger sister of Dakota Fanning, and Kyle Chandler, fresh off his six season run on NBC's popular Friday Night Lights, have joined this upcoming project.
Not much is known about the movie, except that it revolves around three siblings who discover they've captured an alien being in a reel of Super 8 film that they've shot. We reported in August that Paramount Pictures was holding auditions for the film, and that they were looking for: "A female 13-14. A natural beauty - she is stunning, but not the 'cheerleader' type. Strong and confident, but has an underlying sadness. Should have a Midwestern feel."
At the time, Paramount made it clear that they were seeking an unknown actress for the role. It is speculated that Elle Fanning, who has quite an extensive resume in both film and television, will be playing either the sister or best friend of this aforementioned character. As for Kyle Chandler, he could be playing anyone from the siblings' father to a US military official looking into the disappearance of this alien creature.
You can expect more casting announcements for Super 8 in the weeks to come.

Panzer 88 Monster and Tank Concept Art!
September 17th, 2010
Last month, we reported on Peter Briggs's upcoming supernatural World War II thriller Panzer 88, which revolves around a lone Nazi tank crew confronting a giant Balrog monster in the snow, along with some concept art from the project. io9 recently caught up with Peter Briggs, who gave more in-depth details on the movie's plotline, along with a look at some new concept art. You can check out the new images below, followed by some of the information that Peter Briggs had to offer on the upcoming Panzer 88:
io9 has a pretty extensive interview with Peter Briggs that you can read in its entirety on their site. About the mixing of the monster and war genres, the director offered up this bit of insight:
"For the WW2 armor nuts, they're hopefully going to be very happy with this movie. We're showcasing all kinds of esoteric German machinery, all real, never seen on the screen before. We've two tank battle scenes that are fairly adrenalin-fuelled, that haven't really been done in this specific way. It stands on its own feet within the admittedly-slim tank genre. And the monster guys are going to be exceptionally happy, also. there's gore in this movie. No getting around that. In Panzer 88, the lead characters who meet their doom all do so solely at the hands of the creature regardless of how graphic it ultimately is, and I think the audience is going to respond accordingly."
About the actual storyline, Peter Briggs went onto say this:
"The backdrop is set against the German Army retreat through Russia. There's no Nazi occult stuff in this movie. This is about real soldiering. In this movie, the Reich's portrayed with absolute realism. There's one line, about a Special Order coming down from on-high in Berlin, but it's not elaborated on. This is grittier. There's no slapstick. It's the real deal."
The director also went onto describe the Balrog monster that the Nazis encounter in the movie in greater detail by saying:
"People who have seen the creature assume it's based somehow based on a Golem, but it's not specifically. There's a little Jewish mythology in our creation, but it's not grounded in any one actual story. One of the German characters refers to it as a Golem at one point, but he's just taking a shot in the dark. Let's just say it hails from a missing chapter of a story from a small Russian province. Initially, (the Nazis) don't quite know why this thing is obsessing on them, but it's all they can do to roll with the punches and survive as it comes after them, time and again. At the same moment, you sympathize with the creature, and completely understand its aims. If there's ever a videogame of this, you'll be able to play both sides without fearing your morality is being compromised!"

September 17th, 2010
Yesterday, we reported that Jennifer Garner was in talks for the comedy Better Living Through Chemistry, and now it looks like the actress has one more project to add to her plate: Jennifer Garner has boarded The Odd Life of Timothy Green, directed by Peter Hedges, according to Vulture.
The modern-day fable The Odd Life of Timothy Green centers around a child-prodigy musician and his parents. Jennifer Garner would play the mother, and an offer is out to Mark Wahlberg to star opposite her as the dad, though it is rumored he would pass, and in that event, Joaquin Phoenix is a possible candidate.
The music-prodigy fable is based on an original idea by its producer, Ahmet Zappa, son of the late Frank Zappa.

Mark Millar Talks Miracle Park
September 17th, 2010
Kick-Ass co-creator Mark Millar talked with IGN about a low-budget superhero thriller he's directing, Miracle Park, which he describes as "Trainspotting meets X-Men."
Millar gave away some of the film's plot:
Set in contemporary Scotland, this dark, unique superhero story focuses on a group of animal rights activists who break into a low-level research laboratory to find a mile-long underground base owned and facilitated by the US government...Miracle Park breaks all the taboos of superhero cinema and offers a completely new take on the genre...The movie is shot entirely on a hand-held camera, establishing a tone more consistent with Paranormal Activity or The Last Exorcism than a traditional superhero release.
The film plans to shoot though the end of October, and a teaser will be released in January.

Sacha Baron Cohen Is Freddie Mercury!
September 17th, 2010
Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to portray Queen front man Freddie Mercury in an untitled biopic, according to Deadline New York.
The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan penned the script for the upcoming movie, which will go into production in 2011. Graham King is producing via his GK Films banner, and he will also finance the project. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are also producing through their Tribeca Productions label.
The movie will follow Queen's formative years, which will lead up to the band's performance at Live Aid in 1985, considered by many to be among the greatest live rock performances of all time. The site reports that the rights package includes the band's songs. It was unclear at this time whether or not Sacha Baron Cohen would actually be singing, or if they will use Freddie Mercury's vocals. The site also reports that the movie won't cover the last days of Freddie Mercury's life, who died of AIDS in 1991. Here's what Graham King had to say about the project:
"Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."
This will mark the first time that Queen's surviving members have licensed their songs for use in a movie about the band. They also formed Queen Films, which will be a producing partner on the new movie.
We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on this untitled Queen movie as soon as we have more information.

I can't give you much more detail then this. I wasn't supposed to film this, but holy shit it was awesome. I'll be in touch with you guys when I can talk more about it.

At the Mountains of Madness and Haunted Mansion Updates from Guillermo Del Toro
September 17th, 2010
Collider was able to speak with director Guillermo del Toro at the Toronto International Film Festival recently, where the director shed some light on his upcoming film projects At the Mountains of Madness and Haunted Mansion 3D, and a new video game deal that he has yet to announce. Here are the bullet points from the site's conversation below:
"del Toro told me he has a video game deal that's not yet announced. He revealed it's for 3 games to be made over 10 years with the goal of a new game every 3 years!
- Haunted Mansion 3D: he said it will be PG-13 and it will be a "dark ride". Says they turned in the storyline last week to Disney along with the first few key concept drawings. Matthew Robbins is writing and he'll start in about a month. Hopes to know if Disney will move forward on it in January. At that time he'll figure out if he will direct it or if it will be someone else.
- At the Mountains of Madness: del Toro gave me a scoop when he revealed Dennis Muren is designing the monsters! Muren told him "you've never seen monsters like this." If you don't who Dennis Muren is...look over his resume and you'll know when it's so cool that he's involved. He went on to say the film isn't greenlit yet, he'll be talking to some H.P. Lovecraft scholars to get their input on the script, hopes to make the movie without interference, explained how he got James Cameron involved, and says the film suffers from two big issues: it's a hard core R rated movie and it's a horror tentpole with a big budget."
You can to watch the site's full 14-minute video interview with Guillermo del Toro.
At the Mountains of Madness comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Betsy Russell Talks Saw 3D and Chain Letter! A new franchise kicking off October 1st.
EXCLUSIVE: Betsy Russell Talks Saw 3D and Chain Letter!
September 17th, 2010
On October 29th, the seven-part horror anthology Saw comes to its rousing conclusion with the highly anticipated final chapter Saw 3D. Director Kevin Greutert is promising one of the craziest entries ever seen in this series, upping the ante tenfold with all new traps that will have even the toughest splatter junky cringing in his seat. It's going to be a gory mess, and a bloody good time that will have you covering your eyes for a good duration of the movie's runtime.
We recently caught up with series' star Betsy Russell, who has long-played Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) empathetic wife Jill Tuck. The recently released trailer promises us her demise, but is it all a ruse? We recently caught up with the lovely Ms. Russell to find out just what fans can expect when Saw 3D hits theaters this Halloween, and if this is, in fact, the true end of an iconic legacy that has taken the horror world by storm.
If Jill Tuck is too meet her demise, Betsy Russell insures us that she'll return in a new franchise kicking off October 1st. In Chain Letter, Betsy plays a detective on the hunt for The Chain Man, a notorious and elusive killer who is sending his victims a series of foreboding email chain letters before murdering them.
Betsy Russell told us all about both Saw 3D and Chain Letter. Here is our conversation:
Saw 3D looks to have a funner tone than what we've seen in the last six installments.
Betsy Russell: I had fun filming it. (Laughs) I think it's going to be better than ever. It's going to be better than all of the other movies. There are a lot more traps. There are eleven of them. We definitely stepped it up a notch. I haven't seen it yet, but I am very excited too. The trailer that just came out made the film look incredible. It certainly looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.
There is a very revealing moment in the trailer that sees you quartered and hanging from chains. Does Saw 3D mark the end for Jill Tuck?
Betsy Russell: Shoot. I don't know what I can say about that. Ah, fooey. I better ask someone about the specifics of that scene. I better not say anything. Just to be safe, I better not answer that question.
The Saw films are usually very dark. They are often shot with a slimy green tint, or in a disinfected sepia tone. But this new trailer indicates that the final chapter is rather bright and poppy. It's colorful and alive in a way that the Saw films haven't ever been in the past. What do you feel director Kevin Greutert brought to this climax that we haven't really seen in a Saw movie before?
Betsy Russell: Well, Kevin Greutert did direct Saw VI, so he's not too new to the franchise. But they did want to shoot some outdoors stuff. They wanted to bring more people into the scenes. I think we've done that. It's definitely more colorful, and it's going to be more exciting. The 3D element is going to definitely be interesting. We actually shot this in 3D, which is the first time a horror film has been done that way. That was fun. Its history making. It was also a lot more time consuming. But I think the end result is going to make it all worthwhile.
The trailer sells the film as being interactive for the audience. Can you talk about bringing that aspect to the story? And what, exactly, the 3D is bringing to this particular installment that the other sequels didn't have?
Saw 3D comes to theaters October 29th
Betsy Russell: From what I've watched played back, I really, truly felt as though I was in the room with the victim. In those situations, I felt like I was there, in that scene. I felt like I was a part of it. That's what 3D is supposed to make you feel. Things will be coming out at the audience. We will be trapped inside the traps. Saw 3D is going to give fans the true experience. What's better than that? Being part of a Saw film?
With 3D, you can't cheat death on screen with the same old tricks that directors used to utilize, because audiences can see the depth in all movements. How did that change the way you guys shot a lot of the more gruesome carnage?
Betsy Russell: I didn't really pay attention to that stuff. I just listened to what the director would tell me. Occasionally, he'd show me a different way to do something and say, "This is going to look better for 3D." Usually, we'd play the scene the best that we could. Maybe it took a few more times, or it took a lot more time to set up. Sometimes these sequences would take hours to set up. But I didn't approach it any differently than I would have normally. As far as that is concerned, that is all I can say.
We've come to accept that every actor involved in this series is tight lipped about the plot up until the opening weekend has played out. So I'm not looking for story specifics. But can you tell us how important Jigsaw's overall legacy will be to this final chapter of the entire series?
Betsy Russell: Jigsaw has definitely played the most important role in all of the Saw films. Jigsaw is our leader. Having him be a part of the entire franchise has been beneficial to all of us. The fans love him. Tobin Bell is a great actor. He is a great human being. I love him as my husband in the movie, and as a character. I don't love what he has chosen to do, or they way he's chosen to carry out these things that he has been doing. Putting people in traps. As I have said before, his intentions are to make people appreciate what they have on this planet. Their life! When he feels they are taking advantage of it, he gives them a situation to do the wrong or the right thing, to take a chance in the moment and figure out, "What can I do to correct the things I've done in the past? How far would I go to make amends." I think this offers a great moment for all of us. It allows us to sit back and say, "What would we do in that situation?" It allows us to reflect a little bit and say, "Hey, what has my life been all about? Am I really appreciating everything I can appreciate in the moment." We have it pretty darn good. Most of us do, anyway. And even those who find their life to be terrible can find something to appreciate. For Jigsaw's character to be able to make us stop and think, and say, "Hey, you know, this is a crazy way to make me think, but at least I am trying to figure things out." For that, I think the character of Jigsaw is pretty incredible.
Every horror franchise reaches that moment where they say, "This is the last film!" But, throughout the history of the horror genre, we know that to definitely not be the case. I can't think of one final chapter that ever proved to be "the final chapter". What is the case here? What are the producers thinking? Is this the last we'll see of Jigsaw and the Saw films?
Betsy Russell: This is the last film. It is the last in this series. For sure. That is what I have been told.
You say, "The last in this series." Does that mean in this particular run of films, with this storyline? Is it possible that we'll see a Saw: New Beginnings somewhere down the road?
Betsy Russell: I am being told that this is the final Saw film. Period. The end. That's all I know, exactly.
But that doesn't affect you too much. You have Chain Letter coming out on October 1st, before Saw 3D even makes it into theaters. Is this going to be another big franchise for you?
Betsy Russell: I really hope so. I hope the audience connects with the film. I think its great. I saw it, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think that director Deon Taylor did an incredible job. All of the actors are fantastic. There are some great performances from all of these young actors. I think it does have a look like Saw, which is great. That is amazing. It's dark and gritty. The subject matter is something we can all relate to. Getting these chain letters, which used to happen quite often. I think the fans are going to love it. Nikki Reed fans are out there, for sure. I hope that it is the beginning of another series of films. I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
You play a police officer in that film, right?
Betsy Russell: Yes, I play a detective. There's not much that I can tell you. Truthfully, I only have a few scenes. I'm just someone who is there to investigate all of these murders. It's pretty straightforward. I know what my character is all about, but I don't think that will be interesting to anyone else. Yet! But hopefully, in the next one, there will be something much heavier for me and my character. I'll be in it a lot more. That is what I am hoping for, and that is what I've been told.
What can you tell horror fans about this new killer The Chain Man? Do you think he has the potential to become as iconic as Jigsaw has in the course of seven years?
Chain Letter comes to theaters October 1st
Betsy Russell: I don't know about that. I think that's a tough act to follow. But we can definitely learn more about him in the following films. I think his character could definitely be something that the audience will want to know more about.
The Chain Man's M.O. is that he is sending out these chain letters, and then killing those that don't send it on. Can you tell me a little bit more about how this plays out in the film? Is he sneaking in windows and catching people off guard? Or does it go a little deeper than that?
Betsy Russell: I haven't been briefed on this one, and I don't want to get in trouble. That film is opening in a couple of weeks, so I think people will get all of those answers pretty quickly. I was pleasantly surprised. I think it's a good movie.
Now, going back to Saw 3D, the big casting news was that Cary Elwes is finally returning to the series. I'm guessing you can't tell me anything about his appearance. If it's a flashback, if he's still alive. If he's been hobbling around for seven years without a foot...
Betsy Russell: I can't say anything about that. But he's back!
Did you get to work with him on any scenes?
Betsy Russell: I can't answer that, either. All I can tell you is that he is a very nice man. Yeah.
He's still really missing that foot from what I understand...
Betsy Russell: No comment. I am literally scared for my life here. I am sure they are looking over my shoulder, or listening to us right now. They will find out what I told you. You never know who could be listening in on this phone call, right?
With Saw VI, director Kevin Greutert really made it a statement about Health Care. Will there be a similar theme running through the undercurrent of this new and final installment?
Betsy Russell: I cannot answer that question, either! There is a lot going on in Saw 3D. Let's just leave it at that. What has already been told about it, is that this is about a group of survivors. That's really cool. It is FANTASTIC! That is all I am going to tell you about it. The whole movie is going to feel like an amusement park ride.
Saw 3D comes to theaters October 29th, 2010 and stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Gina Holden, Betsy Russell, Tanedra Howard, Johnny Yong Bosch, Shauna MacDonald, Franky G. The film is directed by Kevin Greutert.

CBS Films has debuted the third poster for the upcoming action movie Faster, which is set for release on November 24. Click on the image below, featuring star Dwayne Johnson, to access our full poster gallery from the movie:
A stint in prison usually has one of two effects on a man - it either breaks him down or makes him stronger. For Driver (Dwayne Johnson), a 10-year sentence proved the latter. His strength was not just fueled by time, but also by a hunger to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his own imprisonment. Untouchable on the 'inside,' he made plenty of enemies in prison - men who were counting the days until his release so they could exact their own revenge on the outside. Now, on the day of his release, he is hell-bent on reaping vengeance upon the four men responsible for his brother's murder. With a list of names and addresses in hand, he sprints out of the prison gates and is immediately on his mission.
Faster comes to theaters November 24th, 2010 and stars Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson, Maggie Grace, Moon Bloodgood, Billy Bob Thornton, Matt Gerald, Courtney Gains, Annie Corley. The film is directed by George Tillman Jr..

The actress is making her directorial debut with The Freebie,
EXCLUSIVE: Katie Aselton on The Freebie
September 16th, 2010
On Tuesday we debuted six exclusive photos from an upcoming independent movie entitled The Freebie, which is due in theaters on September 17. Later that night, I ended up speaking to the star and director of that new movie, Katie Aselton, who also stars in the FX comedy series The League. The actress is making her directorial debut with The Freebie, which she stars in alongside Dax Shepard, who was actually a last-minute replacement in the movie:
"Honestly, Dax came in at the 11th hour. I literally met him moments before we started shooting. He just came in and breathed such a beautiful... Ok, I'm not a corny person. This is what you need to know about me. Except, when I talk about Dax coming onto The Freebie, I get all weepy. It was as if the movie gods were like, 'Here is a little gift from us to you, because we think you should make a movie right now.' Dax was incredible. He just sensed that and was so genuine and sincere and sweet and authentic. He dropped every wall he had and every moment he had was just so honest and true. It was everything you could ever want, as an actor and a director working with him."
Aselton also stars in the movie as the wife of Shepard's character. When they realize how stale their love life has become, they decide to take a "freebie," one night of no-strings fun with whoever they choose. Aselton also told us that there was a different actor set to star in the movie, who she would not name. It seems that Shepard's late arrival wasn't just fortuitous because of his availability, but also because he fit that definitive style she was looking for:
"We had another actor in place and he really wasn't working out because the style is particular when you're improvising and acting. It's not like you're just improvising comedically, you're improvising emotionally, which is tricky. I certainly do not blame this actor for not being able to fill those shoes, but when it didn't work out with him, I thought I would wait until we were ready. The opportunity to have Dax come on board presented itself, which was exciting, but if it didn't work out, I really wasn't worried. I would wait until we were ready. It was very calm and very easy. My DP was incredible, my producers were incredible, my editor was incredible. I was not going to fall on my ass, because I knew that they wouldn't let me. I trusted each and every one of them to say, 'No, that sucks.' It's a great place to be."
Since Aselton is married to a prominent director, Mark Duplass, I asked her how The Freebie compares to one of his films:
"I think it's less funny. It's a little raw-er. Is that an adjective? Raw-er? (Laughs). It was more raw than his movies, and that's OK. It was a girl directing it and a girl writing it, so we're more raw-er than they are (Laughs).
Aselton also added that she was working on two more scripts now, which she couldn't spill any details on quite yet. She also addressed the irony in writing more, since she made The Freebie for simpler reasons:
"It's so crazy because I came up with that movie so I could have another acting job."
Katie Aselton's The Freebie opens in theaters on September 17.
The Freebie centers on Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Katie Aselton), a young married couple with an enviable relationship built on love trust and communication. Darren and Annie still enjoy each other's company and laugh at each other's jokes, but, unfortunately, they can't remember the last time they had sex. When a dinner party conversation leads to an honest discussion about the state of their love life, and when a sexy bikini photo shoot leads to crossword puzzles instead of sex, they begin to flirt with a way to spice things up. The deal: one night of freedom, no strings attached, no questions asked. Could a freebie be the cure for their ailing sex life? And will they go through with it? With a keen eye and fresh take, Aselton's directorial debut shines with crisp storytelling and fine-tuned performances. The Freebie is an insightful and humorous look at love, sustaining relationships, and the awkwardness of monogamy when the haze of lust has faded.
The Freebie was released September 17th, 2010 and stars Katie Aselton, Leonora Gershman, Ken Kennedy, Joshua Leonard, Sean Nelson, Ross Partridge, Marguerite Phillips, Scott Pitts. The film is directed by Katie Aselton.
