Movie plot Summary:
Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging (and entirely plausible) farce. In a storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force; it shows that-while terrorism is about ideology-it can also be about idiots.

Four Lions: Synopsis:
In a British city, four men have a secret plan. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is disillusioned about the treatment of Muslims around the world and is determined to become a soldier. This is the most exciting idea Waj (Kayvan Novak) has ever heard. Better still it's a no brainer because Omar does his thinking for him. Opposed to Omar and everyone else on earth is the white Islamic convert Barry (Nigel Lindsay). He'd realize he joined the cell to channel his nihilism - If he had half the self knowledge of a duck. Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) is the odd man out. He can make a bomb - but he can't blow himself up just now coz his sick dad has "started eating newspaper". Instead he's training crows to fly bombs through windows. This is what Omar has to deal with. They must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face?

Four Lions: Drafthouse Films Launches with Four Lions September 9th, 2010
Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Founder Tim League announced today that he is expanding the renowned Alamo Drafthouse brand into film distribution under the banner Drafthouse Films (DrafthouseFilms.com). The first film to be released under the new label will be Christopher Morris' astonishing new comedy Four Lions.
Four Lions is a whip-smart laugh out loud comedy that illuminates the war on terror through satire and farce. Blitzing the notion that a comedy about jihadists is a contradiction in terms, the film grossed an astounding $3 million pounds at the UK box office and was hailed by critics as "a brilliant film - astonishingly funny" causing "so many different kinds of laughter its almost incredible".

Writer director Christopher Morris based the idea on extensive research. "These cells have the same group dynamics as bachelor parties and five a side basketball teams. Plans are upset by arguments, egos, testosterone and idiocy. Terrorism is about ideology but it's also about doofuses."

Four Lions has taken the festival circuit by storm. Following its sell-out success as the buzz hit of the Sundance Film Festival, Four Lions packed the coveted closing night slot of South by Southwest, won the Independent Camera Award at Karlovy Vary and was voted Best Narrative Feature by audiences at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

"I've been a huge fan of Christopher Morris' comedic television and radio for years. To launch our new distribution label with what I consider to be a modern classic is a dream come true," said Tim League.

Four Lions will kick off a 10 city promotional screening tour with Christopher Morris in attendance in mid-October. The film is slated to release this fall in New York, Los Angeles and Austin and will expand wider in the following weeks.

About Four Lions:

Christopher Morris' Four Lions is a funny, thrilling comedy that illuminates modern jihadism through the prism of farce. It understands jihadists as human beings. And it understands human beings as innately ridiculous.

Four Lions plunges us beyond seeing these young men as unfathomably alien. It undermines the folly of just wishing them away or, even worse, alienating the entire culture from which they emerge. The film is neither pro nor anti religious. The jokes fly out of the characters' conflicts, excesses and mistakes. Crackling with wit and tension, Four Lions is the essential response to our failure to engage with reality and a high toast to the idea that laughter is better than killing.

Four Lions comes to theaters November 5th, 2010 and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Julia Davis, Kayvan Novak, Riz Ahmed, Chris Wilson, Alex Macqueen, Craig Parkinson, Preeya Kalidas. The film is directed by Christopher Morris.

Movie Plot Summary:
This documentary feature takes an in-depth look at the rapid rise and dramatic fall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Nicknamed "The Sheriff of Wall Street," when he was NY's Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer prosecuted crimes by America’s largest financial institutions and some of the most powerful executives in the country. After his election as Governor, with the largest margin in the state's history, many believed Spitzer was on his way to becoming the nation's first Jewish President. Then, shockingly, Spitzer’s meteoric rise turned into a precipitous fall when the New York Times revealed that Spitzer - the paragon of rectitude - had been caught seeing prostitutes. As his powerful enemies gloated, his supporters questioned the timing of it all: as the Sheriff fell, so did the financial markets, in a cataclysm that threatened to unravel the global economy. With unique access to the escort world and well as friends, colleagues and enemies of the ex-Governor (many of whom have come forward for the first time) the film explores the hidden contours of this tale of hubris, sex, and power.

Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer: Synopsis:
Eliot Spitzer's meteoric rise turned into a precipitous fall when the New York Times revealed that Governor Spitzer - the paragon of rectitude - had been caught visiting high-priced call girls. As his powerful enemies gloated, his supporters questioned the timing of it all because as the Sheriff of Wall Street fell, so did the financial markets, in a cataclysm that threatened to unravel the global economy. With unique access to the escort world as well as friends, colleagues and enemies of the ex-Governor (many of whom have come forward for the first time) this film explores the hidden contours of hubris, sex, and power. From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney comes the true story of the rapid rise and dramatic fall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer – and it’s not at all what you read in the news.

Movie Review:
by Andrew Schenker on October 31, 2010
Relying on a bevy of circumstantial evidence and without proving much in the way of anything, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer nonetheless hones in on a provocative and highly plausible thesis: that the investigation into the prostitution scandal that brought down former New York State governor Eliot Spitzer was a political hit job carried out at the behest of powerful Republican interests. At the very least, Alex Gibney's doc shows up the Bush-era Justice Department as an institution with seriously misguided priorities. While the DOJ declined to go after the Wall Street criminals that Spitzer made his name prosecuting as state attorney general, they wasted countless taxpayer dollars launching an investigation into a high-class prosecution ring, something not generally taken as the purview of the national government. Of course, there's no denying that Spitzer betrayed his trust and broke the law, but in the grand scheme of things, dallying with well-compensated hookers is a relatively harmless crime compared to the fraud perpetrated by men like ex-AIG CEO Hank Greenberg, whose case former U.S. attorney Michael J. Garcia dropped, only to later turn his investigative attention on the man who had built that very lawsuit, Spitzer himself.

Of course, the former governor was never charged with any crime (johns almost never are in such cases), but the news of Spitzer's involvement was somehow leaked to the press and given the public obsession with the private lives of its politicians and Spitzer's reputation as an "ethical" leader who had previously prosecuted prostitution rings, the story became the subject of sensationalist headlines in the daily tabloids and lead to inevitable calls of resignation. If there's one thing the public loves more than the downfall of a powerful figure, it's when that downfall is charged with a sense of comeuppance, an arrogant, unbending man brought down not only by his own hubris, but his hypocrisy as well. Still, as Gibney shows, there's more than one kind of hypocrisy. Interviewing Wall Street creep and former Spitzer target Kenneth Langone, the director finds the businessman consumed with hatred for the ex-gov, waxing moral about that man's activity while casually dismissing his own crimes. Similarly, Gibney cites the famous "D.C. Madam" case in which current Louisiana senator David Vitter was revealed as a client of an indicted prostitution ring, but was allowed to retain his congressional post, a consequence, the director speculates, of his conservative politics.

Still, as a film, Client 9 is not without its own hypocrisies—or, to put it charitably, inconsistencies of approach. Gibney rightly decries the public obsession with political figures' sex lives and the "hitmen" who make millions digging up this form of dirt. Although he errs in equating, for example, John Edwards's infidelities with Spitzer's illegal actions, the director seems to understand the importance of distinguishing between a politician's official policy and his personal actions, even if the two seem to be contradictory. And yet the film can't help but indulge in a certain fascination with the personal, lurid details that made the Spitzer case so popular with the public.

There's no getting around it: Client 9 is a slick piece of work, full of turgid proclamations ("Eliot Spitzer had taken the first step into his double life"), unnecessary switches in camera angles during interviews, and cutaways to symbolic images (get it, Wall Streeters are sharks!). And as long as Gibney sticks to the political (tracing Spitzer's heroic activity as attorney general, detailing the powerful enemies he made both in Manhattan and Albany, and charting the machinations involved in bringing him down), this aesthetic puffery proves only a mild distraction. But when the film inquires into the more sensationalist aspects of Spitzer's case (speculating on whether or not he wore socks while fucking, recreating an interview with his favorite prostitute about what his bedroom behavior was like), then the slick touches combine with the lurid subject matter to give the film the greasy feel of a New York Post cover story. Interviewing Spitzer himself, Gibney mostly avoids an officious inquiry into the personal, but when he asks the former governor what he learned about his wife's character during this experience, the question feels like an unfair intrusion, a groping after the type of access to a public figure's emotional life that the American populace has come to take for granted. Considering that Client 9 is dedicated to exploring the consequences of just that kind of access, it's unfortunate that Gibney can't bring himself to keep a more prudent distance from those very boundaries whose obliteration he aims to critique.

Outside the Law: Synopsis:
From writer-director Rachid Bouchareb (Days of Glory aka Indigenes) comes the film Outside the Law, the story of three brothers who fight for Algeria's independence from France after World War II. After losing their family home in Algeria, three brothers are scattered across the globe. Messaoud joins the French army fighting in Indochina; Abdelkader becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement; Said moves to Paris to make his fortune in the shady clubs and boxing halls of Pigalle. Gradually, their interconnecting destinies reunite them in the French capital, where freedom is a battle to be fought and won.

Outside the Law: Movie Review:
While watching this film, if you had no idea who in Europe was fighting whom from 1945 to 1962, you'd likely think that Arab terrorists were doing battle today. "Outside the Law" has many scenes of violence inside Paris between Muslim groups and non-Muslim French, so people without a firm sense of history but who watch CNN deal with current topics could not be blamed for making that mistake. Actually, the relationships depicted by Rachid Bouchareb, who wrote and directs this sizzling film, pit Algerian nationalists against the French government, events that ultimately speeded up the process of independence for Algeria in 1962. It all goes to show that, if you pardon the hoary expression, "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." An audience, even one of Europeans and Americans, could not today be blamed for rooting for the Algerians fighting to free their country from French colonialism, while in the same regard, the very people who cheered the "freedom fighters" in 1945-1962 would call them "terrorists" today.

This is not to say that the violence inflicted by the Algerian nationalists was justified, or that the end justified the means, but ideas aside, "Outside the Law" is far from a dull history lesson. If parts of the film employ stiff dialogue, that's all in the service of educating an audience that may not know much about the events. For example, in the opening scene, an Algerian family in 1925 is thrown off its land in favor of a French settler, the head of household telling the police, "I've lived here always. My ancestors lived here. How can I feed my family if I am forced off the land?"

Bouchareb provides plenty of visceral excitement that will remind the audience of police dramas like "Bonnie and Clyde" but which will be compared by those hip to history with Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 masterwork "The Battle of Algiers." Virtually all of Bouchareb's film, though, take place in Paris, as the war for Algerian Independence was fought not only in the colonies but in the home country as well.

No sooner had the French been tossed out of Indochina in 1954-with quite a few Algerians fighting on the French side-than they now had to contend with the potential loss of another colony. So sensitive are the French even today about those defeats that, word is, when "Outside the Law" was shown at the Palais during the Cannes Festival, the French posted gendarmes around the theater for fear of a riot by French, who don't want to be reminded of the tragic events.

In Bouchareb's tale, an Arab family is thrown off their ancestral land in the wide open Algerian spaces in 1925 because the law allowed French settlers to take possession. Three brothers from the family, Saïd (Jamel Debouze), Messaoud (Roschdy Zem), and Abdelkader (Sami Bouajila) work out their relationships with the colonial power in their own ways. Saïd is interested mostly in money. He hangs around the Place Pigalle, pimps some women, runs a prospering casino and manages an Algerian fighter whom he wants to set up in a heavyweight title bout with a Frenchman. (By Frenchman I'm referring throughout as non-Muslim French). He smokes cigars and drinks, both violations of the code of the FLN, the Algerian National Liberation Front. By contrast Messaoud and Abdelkader, the latter more than the former, are bent on violence to wear down the morale of the French, the shootings and explosions to take place in France rather than Algeria. Struggling against the FLN are the army and police, the local police force being led by Colonel Faivre (Bernard Blancan), an officer in France's war with Indochina and now a top detective.

While women play a passive role for the most part, one blonde is in love with Messaoud and joins the FLN cause, a struggle that is financed and given weapons by a group in Frankfurt, Germany, while an Algerian woman is married off to Messaoud but has nothing to say. Christophe Beaucarne's camera is spot-on, taking in the action without resorting to the hackneyed use of grainy cinema-verité treatment.

The film earns its 138 minutes' length, the time passing swiftly given director Bouhareb's view to give the audience a lavish, cinematic treatment of a period in French and Algerian history probably unknown for the most part outside those countries and not at all by those born after the war for independence. As a former teacher of Social Studies, I'm thinking: Wouldn't it be grand if European history teachers could use both historical fiction and cinematic treatments like this to bring history to life?

Young police officer Shane Cooper (Ryan Kwanten) relocates to the small country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife Alice to start a family. But when news of a prison break sends the local law enforcement officers - led by the town’s ruling presence, Old Bill - into a panic, Shane’s first day on duty rapidly turns into a nightmare.
Enter Jimmy Conway, a convicted murderer serving life behind bars, who has returned to the isolated outpost seeking revenge. Now caught in the middle of what will become a terrifying and bloody confrontation, Shane will be forced to take the law into his own hands if he is to survive.
A taut thriller which unfolds over the course of a single day and night, and told with explosive action and chilling violence, Red Hill is a modern-day western played out against the extraordinary landscapes of high-country Australia.

Movie Red Hill Review:
Last weekend Ryan Kwanten’s Australian film, Red Hill premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Now that it’s out there, it’s getting reviewed. Here are excerpts from three reviews, two favorable and one not so favorable. I hope that the good reviews keep on coming in because we really think this is going to be a good one.
Rugged landscapes, a sheriff’s posse and something spookin’ the livestock – these are solid Western ingredients, but Patrick Hughes’s brisk, inventive Red Hill gives them a new spin by placing them in a modern-day Australian police story.

Red Hill is a tour de force debut by commercials director Patrick Hughes and this labour of love should win him some international repute

This hugely entertaining cross-genre tale of a rural manhunt contrives to meld cop and cowboy elements into a rattling nail-biter. Unashamedly commercial, the film is destined to travel widely – helped by the current visibility of star Ryan Kwanten, from HBO’s True Blood – and will have a failsafe festival berth, especially in midnight-movie slots.

Atmospheric opening shots of mist-covered mountain country establish Red Hill’s classic Western flavour – and show us that we’re not in the usual flat terrain of Australian outback drama. Arriving in this landscape is Shane Cooper (the likeable, no-fuss Kwanten), a young city policeman married to Alice (Van Der Boom). A regular-bloke type, sensitive-souled and somewhat gauche, Shane has taken this posting because pregnant Alice has been advised she needs country air and (ha!) peace and quiet.

In 1976, John Carpenter famously turned John Ford’s Western Rio Bravo into his thriller Assault On Precinct 13. Here Hughes reverses the process, folding a modern cop drama back into the iconography of the Western. He also retains some Carpenter-style pulpy elements – ample bloodshed, an apparently indestructible silent nemesis, plus lashings of atmospheric darkness.

At times, the film skirts perilously close to predictability. But to see old-school conventions confirmed rather than subverted proves to be a source of much pleasure – and makes it all the more enjoyable when Hughes throws a witty curveball, as he does late in the film when a hugely incongruous deus ex machina stalks onto the scene.

The pay-off is predictable, as Shane learns that the bad guys aren’t always who they seem, but it’s utterly satisfying. Red Hill is a tour de force by commercials director Hughes – making his feature debut as director, producer, writer and editor – and this labour of love should win him some international repute. Tim Hudson’s widescreen photography capitalises magnificently on the poetic terrain of Victoria’s high country. The film’s one, forgiveable flaw is that the cod-Morricone touches in Dmitri Golovko’s soundtrack are sometimes laid on with a trowel......

Movie Plot Summary:
A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, FAIR GAME is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative VALERIE PLAME (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was exposed by a politically motivated press leak.
As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat JOE WILSON (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a firestorm of controversy.

Fair Game: Synopsis:
"Fair Game" is a drama about the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. Ambassador Joseph Wilson watched his wife's CIA status become compromised after he wrote op-ed columns that accused the Bush Administration of manipulating intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq.

Plame Wilson left the CIA in 2005 and she and her husband filed a civil suit against Vice President Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Cheney's ex-chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby. While Rove and Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage admitted they leaked her agency status to journalists, Libby was convicted of lying to a federal grand jury about his role in compromising her covert status.

Movie Plot Summary:
In 1974, Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” made its stage debut, combining poetry, dance and music, and most significantly, placing the black female experience center stage. In lyrical, honest, angry, funny and tender language, Shange’s “colored girls” evoked the feelings woven into the fabric of black female life in America. Within two years, the play became a Broadway sensation, won an Obie and Tony Award, and would eventually be produced in regional theaters throughout the country. Now, thirty six years later, filmmaker Tyler Perry adapts this landmark work for the big screen, integrating the vivid language of Shange’s poems into a contemporary narrative that explores what it means to be a woman of color - and a woman of any color - in this world.

For Colored Girls: Synopsis:
For Colored Girls weaves together the stories of nine different women – Joanna, Tangie, Crystal, Gilda, Kelly, Juanita, Yasmine, Nyla and Alice – as they move into and out of one another’s existences; some are well known to one another, others are as yet strangers. Crises, heartbreaks and crimes will ultimately bring these nine women fully into the same orbit where they will find commonality and understanding. Each will speak her truth as never before. And each will know that she is complete as a human being, glorious and divine in all her colors.
