Kannada film industry was affected by cricket matches in the past. Especially the IPL T20 and Cricket World Cup have always been a nightmare to the industry. Now, the World Cup 2011 is a taking its toll on Sandalwood. Many film producers are in the state of shock and trying to release their movies before it the cricket match starts.

Cricket has become a new religion in India and at least 50% Indian population will be busy watching cricket matches till its end. Now, World Cup 2011 is scheduled to start tomorrow (19th Feb) and will be played till April 2. So this cricket fever will last for 43 days. Very few movie buffs will go to theatres to watch movies during this period and this will cause a big loss to the producers.

In recent months, Kannada film industry is recovering from the failure of movies. Now, World Cup 2011 has come as a curse to the industry when it has just started facing success. Moreover, most of the multiplexes will screen cricket matches, which is another big blow to the industry. Many producers find it hard to get enough number of theatres to screen their movies.

The World Cup fever, which has already built up, has lead the industry to bulk releases. Five Kannada movies like Veera Bahu, 5 Idiots, Naavu Nam Hendthiru, Aptha and Take It Easy were slated to release this weekend (18th February). But KFCC interfered and deferred the release of Aptha and Take It Easy, which would hit the screens next week.

According to the guidelines of the KFCC, only two to three Kannada films have to be released a week. The KFCC has appointed a conciliatory board to look into this queue system and streamline the release of films. But the threat of suffering loss by these cricket matches has forced many filmmakers to release their films in bulk to recover at least their investments.

Earlier, movies like Gun, Prince, Rajdhani and Sanju Weds Geetha were slated to release on 25th Feb. With the postponing of Aptha and Take It Easy to next week, two more movies are added to the list. Now, KFCC is in a trapped situation because Prince, Rajdhani and Sanu Weds Geetha have been delayed for long time. These are big budget movies and delaying them further would lead the producers of these films to suffer loss. Now, the question is whether the KFCC will find a proper solution to save these producers.

Hindi cinema is going through a major metamorphosis. Innovative ideas and fresh stories are being developed and executed by Gen X storytellers. Bheja Fry director Sagar Ballary also tries to attempt something different from what he attempted in his maiden attempt. The humungous expectations from Ballary must've put tremendous pressure and responsibility on his shoulders, for sure. But before I begin to analyze Kaccha Limboo, let me clear the misconception about the genre of this one. It's not a comedy, not remotely similar to Bheja Fry, as some people would like to believe.

I couldn't help but recall three films while watching Kaccha Limboo - Gulzar's Kitaab [1977], Ritwik Ghatak's Bari Theke Paliye [Bengali; 1959] and celebrated French director Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows aka Les Quatre Cents Coups [French; 1959]. These three films had great stories to tell [of a misunderstood adolescent], but among the three, Kaccha Limboo bears a striking resemblance to Kitaab, which, in my opinion, ranks amongst Gulzar's best works. However, unlike Kitaab, which remains well etched in our memory even after three decades, Kaccha Limboo runs out of gas after an interesting first hour.

Kaccha Limboo suffers due to a sketchy screenplay, also penned by Ballary. In fact, the post-interval portions ruin the impact that was beautifully created after a fairly engrossing first hour. One would've expected Ballary to explore the infatuation angle in the story or the cracks that develop between the adolescent and his parents. Instead, the story wanders to an alien territory in the second hour and I actually wondered, did Ballary intend telling a fresh story in the second half? That's not all! The story goes on and on and on and on… so much so that you fervently pray that it reaches its culmination pronto. But Ballary messes up the conclusion too.

Makes me wonder if Bheja Fry was a fluke. Or was it just a flash in the pan? In fact, I would consider it disrespectful if anyone compares the brilliant Taare Zameen Par with this slapdash effort!

Shambhu [Taher Sutterwala] is a 13-year-old teenager who falters consistently. Trouble at school, peer pressure and a half-baked romance, all contribute to his woes. A huge fight with some local boys and a stern warning from the School Principal deepens his crisis and running away from home seems like a solution.

On his journey of self-realization and discovery, Shambhu bumps into Vitthal [Chinmay Kambli], an extremely smart kid who belongs to a nearby fisherman colony. Shambhu is mesmerized by this new world he encounters with Vitthal. Everything is in such stark contrast to the world he had just left behind. And everything worked just fine until a sudden turn of events force Vitthal and Shambhu to set out on a train journey in search of a place where they can find the freedom they desire.

Kaccha Limboo starts off really well, with Ballary handling the material with great care. Childhood can be a delight, but in today's chaotic world, the kids are often exposed to the realities of adulthood very early in their life. The incidents depicted in the film's first hour [peer pressure, puppy love, familial frustrations and high-school dilemmas] seem so real, as if they were borrowed from your, mine, our lives. The incidents, anecdotes, occurrences and episodes are worth noting, especially Shambhu's interaction with his classmates and also with his parents [with his father in particular]. In fact, the viewer is introduced to Shambhu's grumpy and irritable nature at the very outset, when Vinay Pathak and Rukhsaar, family friends, are invited home for dinner. The kid experiences the lonely stages at home and also at school and the film offers an insight into the emotional confusion that he experiences, besides creating a touching awareness of his unspoken agonies.

But, like I pointed out earlier, Kaccha Limboo goes haywire in the post-intermission portions. One only expects Ballary to come up with a much better second hour, but you feel exasperated after a point. The film ends abruptly, leaving the viewer wondering what really happened to Vitthal, who fell off the train? Also, why is Shambhu felicitated by the School Principal? Did Shambhu actually commit some act of bravery to merit a felicitation in his school? If yes, what was it? No explanations are offered, frankly!

Ballary has injected a couple of songs in the narrative and though at least two numbers are decent, the song in the fishermen colony was just not required. In fact, it only makes the proceedings lengthier. I would like to make a special mention of the dialogue, which are wonderful at places.

Talking of performances, Sarika is natural, while Atul Kulkarni handles his part with ease. The show actually belongs to the kids - Taher and Chinmay - who are the real stars of the enterprise. Taher delivers a spontaneous, deep and convincing performance, while Chinmay catches your attention with a splendid performance. In fact, it is Chinmay who makes vital portions of the second hour come alive with his bindaas portrayal. The remaining kids, each of them, are complete natural. Rajesh Khattar is effective. Iravati Harshe does well, but where does she disappear suddenly? Bhairavi Goswami gets no scope. Vinay Pathak, in a cameo, is passable. Ditto for Rukhsaar.

On the whole, Kaccha Limboo comes across as an unripe and undeveloped effort. Disappointing!

Melbourne (ANI): ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling's rags to riches story is to be made into a movie in Canada. The film based on Rowling's rise from struggling single mum in Edinburgh to multimillionaire author of the Harry Potter book series is set to begin shooting next month.

Scotland's The Herald newspaper reported that film producers initially toured Edinburgh in their search for shooting locations, but decided to move production to Canada to save money because they found similar buildings there that could be used as backdrops.

Rowling, 45, has not authorised the television movie, reports News.com.au. She refused to comment on the film, which has the working title ‘Strange Magic’. Australian actor Poppy Montgomery, who stars as FBI agent Samantha Spade in the hit US television series Without a Trace, will play Rowling.

Movie Review:
One of the biggest fears we both have is the risk of forgetting our identities and our memories. Just the mere though of memory loss already scares us and thank God that even though we had bumped our heads a couple of times really hard, we never really had to battle amnesia. We assume forgetting yourself would basically alter the way you live - creepy right? "Unknown" tries to tackle the topic of amnesia and memory loss as its main character gets in an accident and wakes up in a coma just to discover that his wife does not recognize him and another man has replaced his identity. But having a horrifying plot does not mean you instantly have a thrilling and suspenseful action film. Read on to find out if we think "Unknown" was able to properly expound its basic premise.

Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) awakens from a coma after a car accident in Berlin just to discover that his wife (January Jones) does not recognize him and another man (Aidan Quinn) has assumed his identity. Ignored by authorities thinking the crash has affected his mind and hunted by mysterious assassins, he finds himself alone and on the run. Aided by an unlikely ally (Diane Kruger), Martin plunges headlong into a deadly mystery that will force him to question his sanity, his identity and just how far he is willing to go to uncover the truth.

"Unknown" makes us a wee bit confused. On one end, we felt that "Unknown" was your typical action thriller film. The action sequences feel familiar even uninteresting at times. Although it had its moments, most of it was quite forgetful and it never builds up to a frantic his pace. In fact, the film feels a little on the slow side choosing to pace itself with the story - not that we are actually complaining (more on this later). Liam Neeson was typical self: bad-ass as an action star but quite demure when it comes to everything else and it did not work out with "Unknown". Would you have a reserved look knowing that your wife does not even remember or recognize you? Surely not! On the other hand though, "Unknown" feels fresh and unpredictable and this is mostly due to the wonderfully written story. In this element, "Unknown" truly catapults itself from a mediocre film to a good one. It will definitely surprise you. In all honesty, "Unknown" gave us mixed feelings but the unconventional storyline won over the action elements.

Synopsis:
Justin Bieber: Never Say movie is a 3-D documentary centering on the singer Justin Bieber. It follows Justin Bieber with some footage of performances from his 2010 concert tour.....
It was announced just this week that the name of Justin Bieber’s upcoming movie is “Never Say Never.” The movie will depict Justin’s life on tour, from performing concerts on stage, to hanging out with his friends and tour mates while on the road.
Below is a video that was released which shows the full “Never Say Never” movie poster in a super fun way! Check it out and let us know if you are excited to see Justin’s movie in theaters on February 11, 2011.

Movie Reviews:
Combining early Bieber home footage with family interviews, current concert footage and backstage insight, Chu has weaved a web that captures audiences and joyfully doesn’t let them go until the final credits.

The title of the film, Never Say Never, comes from Bieber’s smash hit from summer 2010. When sorting through names for the film, the creative team even chose the title correctly to match the ferocity of the experience on screen. When Justin is about to hit a Providence stage, there is the appearance of Jaden Smith, who raps on the track and stars in the film that the song is the theme to: The Karate Kid.

Jaden Smith doesn’t want to take the stage with Bieber to perform Never Say Never a night earlier than planned because his parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, are flying in to New York to see him on stage for the first time in his life at Madison Square Garden. Justin agrees. Unlike most teenagers who may have pushed their friend to take the dive, Bieber does the opposite. If Jaden performs with Justin in Providence, his parents will miss his first live performance. That means too much to him. The scene is simply another in the film where Bieber establishes himself as a potential leader of his generation of superstars who have an adoring public, yet still stay completely grounded.

It is in that exact vein that Never Say Never is the perfect family film. Viewers also see the support that Justin’s parents have given him -- especially his grandparents. The powerful relationship between Justin and his grandfather is particularly touching.

We meet neighbors and the "village" that raised Justin Bieber. When Justin goes home at one point in the film post success, this point is driven, well, home. Without the millions of adoring fans, audiences are allowed to see in Chu’s film that Justin Bieber is simply a 16-year-old teenager playing basketball with friends and enjoying the company of his family. Also, one who still has to make his bed.

The woman with whom Mel Gibson is currently embroiled in a custody battle turned down a $16 million settlement offer hoping to get more cash.

Oksana Grigorieva wanted $20 million to keep quiet about the secret tapes revealing her baby daddy Mel Gibson to be a complete psycho, but says as the mother of his child she deserves no less.

When Mel and Oksana shacked up together in 2009, he had her sign a contract saying she was "not entitled to any of the actor's fortune under the terms of a 2009 cohabitation agreement that said she would get only a year's free rent in a Sherman Oaks home Gibson owned and a Dodge Charger if they split," according to the LA Times.

After Lucia was born and Mel went cuckoo again, Oksana got herself a lawyer and asked for a $20 million settlement. Mel counter-offered $18; the couple eventually agreed to $16 million, including joint custody of Lucia, money for both mother and daughter and a Steinway piano -- a special gift to Oksana, a classical pianist.

Negotiations fell apart when Oksana wouldn't give up the tapes, according to sources.

"You don't call. You don't accept my invitation to come. You hand tapes around & jeopardize us all," Mel texted on the day of the proposed $18 million settlement.

"I wouldn't have played ur messages if u were keeping ur word," Oksana responded.

Watch Online Masti Express Review: falls short of expectations
By: Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama
Friday, February 18, 2011, 14:33 [IST]

Now here's yet another film that places its story on Rajpal Yadav's shoulders. This time, Rajpal has Johny Lever for company. Masti Express, helmed by first-time director Vikram Pradhan, has two stories running concurrently: Rajpal and his wife Divya Dutta's fervent desire to have their kid educated at a respectable institution and the auto rickshaw race that forms the crux of the story.

Quite an interesting idea, I must add, but interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into fascinating cinematic experiences. The problem is, Masti Express appeals in parts, not in its entirety. At places, the film is engaging, but there are times when it comes across as a yawn-inducing attempt. The screenplay writing is clearly the culprit here!

Masti Express tells the story of a father [Rajpal Yadav], who desperately tries to get his only child admitted to a renowned school and provide him education. His son is just another brat in a slum with an uninspiring future. The son is refused admission initially, but later, when the father faces a lot of obstacles and wins an auto rickshaw race with the help of the school kids, the Principal [Manoj Joshi] opens the doors of his school to the kid.

The director tries to pack just about everything to make the film palatable to the junta janardhan. He decides to pander to the commercial diktats by injecting songs on guest stars [filmed on Shankar Mahadevan and Kashmira Shah, respectively] and also instill comedy in the narrative. Sadly, one doesn't laugh at the jokes [which are crass anyways], the songs too act as speed breakers, while the kiddie portions are half-baked. Ideally, the director could've avoided the unwanted add-ons [including the characters that suddenly arrive from other states to participate in the race] and the editor should've trimmed the film judiciously for a better impact.

On the brighter side, Pradhan has handled a few sequences expertly. Note the sequence when Rajpal cooks an alibi as soon as Divya Dutta enquires whether their kid has been granted admission in the school or not. Prior to that Rajpal's sequence with the School Principal [Manoj Joshi] also stands out. Also, note the sequence when Divya tries to pacify a heart-broken Rajpal after the auto rickshaw accident. Besides, the finale, when Rajpal actually pulls the auto rickshaw to the winning post, moves you. The auto rickshaw race is interesting in parts, while the attempt to inject humor during the race falls flat.

Like I pointed out earlier, the songs don't help in carrying the film forward, except for one song when the auto rickshaw is being repaired. However, the background score is effective, especially towards the finale. The cinematography is inconsistent.

Given the fact that the story of Masti Express rests on his shoulders, one expects Rajpal to deliver a stunning performance, but he doesn't. He is decent at best and there are times when one feels that he's hamming big time. Johny Lever is loud, but that's how his character is perceived. Divya Dutta stands out with a striking performance. Vijay Patkar is just right, Razzaq Khan gets to deliver some funny lines, while Rajkumar Kanojia is passable. Manoj Joshi is strictly okay. Ryan Pinto has screen presence and also has the trappings of a fine actor, provided he gets the right parts to portray.

On the whole, Masti Express falls short of expectations. Besides, the film has arrived with zilch hype and that will make the effort go disregarded.
