If you’re like most people, you’ve probably had a childhood experience with terror that has accompanied you throughout life. When I was growing up, the girl across the street from me spent hours crying and puking after deciding to watch Children of the Corn by herself one night. It was a brave decision which won her both my admiration, and a lifetime of nightmares haunted by Isaac.
My most vivid memory of terror — a true terror which made me physically sick with dread — was reading Clive Barker’s Books of Blood when I was way too young. The Books of Blood are a collection of short stories and by the time I was done with the second one (Midnight Meat Train), I had been changed forever, precious childhood innocence stripped. Never before had I even entertained the idea of such evil.
And now The Book of Blood is a film, coming to BluRay and DVD on September 22nd. It joins two stories out of the book, and the trailer looks genuinely scary:
Still it’s straight-to-video, and that’s almost always a guarantee of shittiness.
Clive Barker hasn’t really been done right by Hollywood, excepting (perhaps) for Hellraiser. Here’s hoping this project turns out to be a surprise.
Update: I didn’t realize that the story which robbed my childhood innocence had also been made into a movie. I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it.
This is the frame story for the entire "Books of Blood" series by Clive Barker. A psychic researcher, Mary Florescu, has employed a quack medium named Simon McNeal to investigate a haunted house. Alone in an upstairs room, McNeal at first fakes visions, but then the ghosts really do come for him. They attack him and carve words in his flesh, and these words, claims the narrator, form the rest of the stories, stories written on a literal, living Book of Blood.
A paranormal expert discovers a house that is at the intersection of so-called "highways" transporting souls in the afterlife.
Book of Blood is a Horror Film currently in production based on a short story by Clive Barker of the same title, published in Volume One of the collection Books of Blood. The plot features a young man who finds a place of transportation of souls in the afterlife. It is being directed by John Harrison. Leading actors include Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, and Reg Fuller. Other actors include Doug Bradley, James Watson, Simon Bamford, and Romana Abercromby.
Book of Blood is the second story to be adapted from Barker’s collection, following The Midnight Meat Train. During his appearance at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors he noted this film will be followed by Dread, Pig Blood Blues, and then Madonna.
Adapted and directed by John Harrison from one of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood, the film shoot occurred in Scotland through December 2007 and into early 2008. Following exposure at the 2008 European Film Market, and the completion of the FX shoot in London, the film is now in post-production.

John Malkovich stars in director Steve Jacobs' adaptation of J.M. Coetzee's Booker Prize-winning novel concerning a Cape Town whose flight from scandal leads him into a direct confrontation with the lingering demons of apartheid. Fastidious Cape Town college professor David Lurie (Malkovich) may see himself as somewhat impervious, though he's about to bring about his own downfall due to a selfish and foolhardy relationship with a student who isn't afraid to drag their clandestine affair screaming into the light. When controversy erupts on campus as a result of the affair, David beats a hasty retreat into the countryside in order to lie low on his daughter Lucy (Jessica Haines)' farm in the Eastern Cape. David fears for his daughter's isolation, fears that are soon confirmed when father and daughter are violently attacked by three black youth. In the aftermath of the horrific siege, David is deeply shaken to learn that one of their assailants is in fact a relative of trusted worker Petrus (Eriq Ebouaney), who lives peacefully alongside Lucy in the South African brush, and has even begun constructing a home at the edge of her property. Can these people somehow find grace in a country that's still struggling with its tragic history, or is that history destined to repeat itself forever into the future?
Disgrace tells the tale of David Lurie, a literature professor. Lurie retreats to his daughter's farm in a small Cape Town, South African town. Lurie is trying to put behind him a highly publicized scandal where he slept with one of his students. He finds that even in his new setting trouble has followed him and no matter how far he goes, his past has continued to haunt him.
Disgrace is a 2009 film based on the 2003 Nobel Prize winning novel by South African author J.M . Coetzee. The film is directed by Steve Jacobs and is written by Anna Maria Moticelli based on the novel by J.M. Coetzee.

Plot Summary
For ten weeks in 1941, Walt Disney, his wife Lilly, and sixteen colleagues from his studio visited nations in Latin America to gather story material for a series of films with South American themes.
Walt & El Grupo” chronicles the amazing ten-week trip that Walt Disney and his hand-picked group of artists and filmmaking talent (later known as “El Grupo”) took to South America in 1941 at the behest of the U.S. Government as part of the Good Neighbor Policy. Within just three short years after the phenomenal success of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the Walt Disney Studios experienced a chain of financial challenges that ultimately led to the infamous animators strike. Also during this time, the Roosevelt administration had growing concerns about Nazi and Fascist influence in Latin America, and the rest of the world was slipping further into war. In stark contrast to these trying times, Disney and his colorful group of artists found themselves on a lively trip full of hope and discovery as they explored various South American cities, spending the majority of their time in the countries of Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The group was saddled with an unusual assignment – while gathering story material, immersing themselves in the culture, befriending local artists, meeting political leaders and attending countless functions, their journey was also a de facto diplomatic mission, and as a result, the studio produced the classic films “Saludos Amigos” and “The Three Caballeros.” Shot on film in five countries, “Walt & El Grupo” is a tale that still resonates on both sides of the equator. The film time travels in Walt Disney’s footsteps through the use of personal letters and stunning artwork from the trip, remembrances by descendants and survivors, and extraordinary never-before-seen footage. “Walt & El Grupo” brings together an intertwined story of art and politics, the poignancy of a bygone age, and a legendary artist during one of his most trying times..
Review
Theodore Thomas, son of the late Walt Disney Studios animator Frank Thomas (1912-2004) and director of the acclaimed 1995 documentary Frank and Ollie, helms this second foray into Disney history, Walt and El Grupo (2007). The subject this time lies somewhat outside the boundaries of Disney animation and rests on an unusual footnote: in 1941, Walt Disney personally led a “goodwill tour” and research expedition of South America, with a team of animators in tow whom he collectively christened “El Grupo.” The voyage transcended passing personal interest on the part of the animators: its residual effects can be seen in several Latin-themed Disney projects - notably, Saludos Amigos (1942) and Three Caballeros (1945) (both of which won Oscars) and other efforts designed to support the Good Neighbor Policy of the United States. With Walt and El Grupo, Theodore Thomas and his wife, Kuniko Okubo, combine rare, unseen 16mm home movie footage of the original trip (held in the Disney vaults for years) with footage from their own trip through South America that retraces the Disney animators’ original journey - contrasting 1941 footage with glimpses of the same locales, shot sixty years later. On the soundtrack, Thomas and Okubo overlay reminiscences by the original travelers, taken from journals and letters and read by family members.

Movie Plot
Adli who works in Terengganu goes back to his village in Temerloh and comes across a strange event where the people carrying a coffin during a funeral procession heading towards a cemetery, suddenly transforms into zombies. That night after prayers, he and his friends began talking about the signs and incidents that he experienced, which are believed show that something bad is going to happen.
Adlin (Faizal AF4), who works in Bintulu returns to his hometown in Temerloh during the holiday. As usual each time when he goes back he would pay a visit to Pak Ajis (Datuk Aziz Sattar) and his food stall, to consume his favorite noodles called “Mee Calong” and for a casual conversation.
He goes there one night with his friend Kadir (Abon). After reaching the stall they begin from the general conversation, and then move on to horror stories. Six horror tales of Malaysian ghost and urban legends that are very scary are told among the stall visitors. Adlin then remembers an event of people carrying a coffin during a funeral procession that suddenly transforms into zombies.
Movie Review
Another factory worker then shares her story about travelling in a bus without driver and the bus goes on to drive by itself. All of a sudden Adlin feels his soul is rather weak, and he can also feel that there is a ghost spirit among the chatters and one of his suspects is Pak Ajis himself. But how can Pak Ajis become a ghost when he is still alive? If the ghost is not Pak Ajis, who is the real ghost then?
M. JAMIL, son of silver screen icon Datuk Sarimah Ahmad and the most promising actor at the Second Malaysian Film Festival in 1982, is once again donning his movie-maker’s cap, after a 15-year hiatus. The producer/director’s latest project is a scary and funny “expansion” of his 2004 short VCD movie Momok.Jamil, who won his first major award in 1982 for playing Sarimah’s son in the tear-jerker Dia Ibuku, is teaming up with his mother again for the first time in 20 years, in Momok The Movie, set for release on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri next month.Mother and son last collaborated in Jamil’s Warna-Warna Hati, a 1990 film directed by A.R. Badul. They first starred together in Jejak Bertapak in 1982.
“I play a driver in this horror-comedy, while my mother plays the concerned parent of the protagonist Adlin,” Jamil said. The cast includes Jamil’s wife Siti Rohani Wahid, their daughters Siti Nursyahira Nabila, Siti Qasrina Qistina, Siti Nayli Yusrina, Siti Batriesya Marsya and Siti Sarah Saqirah, Datuk Aziz Sattar (of Bujang Lapok fame), Akademi Fantasia 4 champion Faizal Ramly, Raja Lawak 2 winner Nabil Ahmad, Bruneian actress Mimi Rahzia, Abon, Rosliza Rosli, Hairina Halim (Akademi Fantasia 6), Ruminah Sidek, Shazleen Shabi, Hanis Zalikha, Jamaluddin Kadir and Mior Ahmat Zaudi.
Jamil is overjoyed that Aziz had agreed to reprise his role. “Pak Aziz starred in five of my productions, including the last film I made, Tarik in 1993, and the original Momok. Once again, he’s playing Pak Ajis, the warong owner who is a ‘gold mine’ of horror stories.”Jamil said Aziz’s Pak Ajis was the only character from Momok who made it to Momok The Movie.“In Momok, he tells horror stories to visitors to his stall, and they share their experiences with him. It’s pretty much the same in this one, but the horror stories are much scarier than before.”Momok The Movie is the story of Adlin (Faizal) who returns to his village in Temerloh, Pahang, for a holiday and visits Pak Ajis’ stall.Joined by close friend Kadir (Abon, who also starred in Momok), Adlin learns about the pontianak, pocong, orang bunian, sampuk, zombie and the mohini of Indian folklore.
Along the way, strange things begin to happen and Adlin discovers that there is more to the ghost-loving hawker than we know.“I spent four months coming up with the script and filming took a month.“I avoided using computer-generated images as I wanted Momok The Movie to be as realistic as possible.”Jamil said he chose to make a horror comedy because Malaysians love the genre.
Faizal thanked Jamil for giving him his ‘big break’ in acting.“Momok The Movie is my first major starring role, and it’s an honour to work with Jamil and Sarimah, who are a brilliant mother-and-son team,” he said.“I’ve also done a film Pulau Asmara which will be out in October.”“I love comedy and horror, and this is just the movie for me,” he said, adding that he would love to act alongside fellow Terengganu native Akademi Fantasia star and duet partner Heliza Helmi.“I’m really proud of her. She did great in Syurga Cinta.”Aziz said he was happy to be back as an “enhanced” Pak Ajis. “Pak Ajis is not like me, but we share one thing in common — we are great storytellers,” he said, adding that he loved playing the character who was both “scary and funny”.
Sarimah, who plays Faizal’s mother, said that while her character was a supporting one, it “turned the tide” in the story. “She is the voice of reason and keeps the other characters mindful of who they are,” she said.Hairina, who plays the mother of a possessed woman, said Momok The Movie was her first film and she was excited about it.“Last year, I starred in the play Patriot and now I’m in the 8TV series Blogger Boy,” she said.Budding actress Mariam Rahman, who plays a pontianak in the movie, said it was her big screen debut.“I’ve been starring in several television movies over the last year, and prior to that, I was a students’ adviser in Akademi Fantasia 6,” she said.Another newcomer, Shikin Mior Ahmat, whose father Mior Ahmat, plays one of the main characters, said it was an honour to work with Jamil and Sarimah as they were screen legends.Momok The Movie is produced by Jamil’s company Galaksi Seni and is supported by the National Film Corporation (Finas). Plot Summary
Follows a man who travels to London from Spain on a quest to find his biological father. While there, he meets a Belgian girl who has romantic ups and downs.
Overly familiar but endearing nonetheless, this coming-of-age indie from Alexis Dos Santos is most likely to appeal to those who recognize themselves in the story's lost heroes. Sad-eyed and soulful, Axl (Fernando Tielve) and Vera (Deborah Francois) are European twentysomethings bouncing around London looking for any kind of anchor — music, sex, love, whatever. Their generic adventures aren't especially exciting (he's hoping to find his lost father, she's in an elusive romance). But Dos Santos is after something more, and somewhere within the vibrant soundtrack, New Wave look and spontaneous vibe, he very nearly finds it..
Reviews
PARK CITY -- Chockablock with tasty music, "Unmade Beds" is a look at the immigrant experience in contemporary London from a slightly different perspective. Tracing parallel stories of a twentysomething French woman, a Spanish expat and their friends, writer-director Alexis Dos Santos creates the texture of a particular time and place in their life as they try to find their identity in a foreign land. More atmospheric than compelling, the film could attract a young audience that relates to the characters and appreciates the terrific soundtrack.
Set in the city's scruffy East End, Vera (Deborah Francois) and Axl (Fernando Tielve) live in the same sprawling squatters warehouse (a triumph of funky production design by Kristian Milsted) but don't know each other. Living with their own personal angst while consuming copious quantities of alcohol, it's not that surprising their paths haven't crossed. In any case, it's convenient for the storytelling, which floats along more like a dream than a linear story.
Axl is in London searching for the father who abandoned him as a child in Spain. Turns out he's now a very normal real estate agent with a wife and two kids. Axl is unable to tell him the truth, and pretends to be looking for a flat in order to have some contact, but he agonizes endlessly over it.
Vera, on the other hand, has withdrawn into herself and her day job as "the worst book seller" in the world. Apparently licking her wounds after a bad affair, she meets a mysterious guy (Michiel Huisman) and starts a romance with no questions asked or information exchanged (shades of a sweeter "Last Tango in Paris"). But there's trouble in paradise, and things don't turn out as planned.

He now leads a simple life running a small sushi shop and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit. When he discovers a super tsunami starting in Tsushima, Japan is headed stratight for the Korean peninsula, he quicklu heads down to Haeundae. Eventually, KIM gets a call about a deadly oncoming wave, with only ten minutes to spare! While the vacationers and citizens of Busan are enjoying a peaceful, hot summer day, a super-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae.
Review
‘Haeundae’ is the name of one of South Korea’s most famous beaches and is also the center of one of the worst disasters to ever hit the country; a massive tsunami ready to hit and wipe out everyone enjoying the beach!
‘Haeundae’ is the name of one of South Korea’s most famous beaches and is also the center of one of the worst disasters to ever hit the country; a massive tsunami ready to hit and wipe out everyone enjoying the beach!
This is the premise of South Korea’s first major disaster movie ever. This movie is pegged as being a disaster, drama, comedy, and romance all rolled into one; making it very difficult to actually put into one definite genre. Like many South Korean films, this one tries to bust through genres and in doing so, while being a bit confusing for audiences, ends up standing as something very unique when compared to Hollywood. Haeundae is no different; this movie moves through the interactions of its characters, romances, and squabbles with the backdrop of an impending disaster that only the main character knows about and no one believes him until it is almost too late to do anything about it.
While hardly an original script, especially to westerners who are bombarded with disaster movies at least several times a year, Haeundae is well worth watching because of the director’s effortless ability to weave in comedy, drama, and romance without the movie turning hackneyed or overdone.
The movie is directed by Je-gyun who is already a popular name in cinema and has done a number of romances, comedies, and dramas already. He brings together a starry cast as well, including Sol Kyung-gu who plays Choi Man-shik, the main character who, after losing his best friend to a tsunami retires from the sea for good. He settles down to own a shop on the Haeundae beach. He is supported by Ha Ji-won as Kang Yeon-hee who upon being rescued by his brother Hyung Silk (Kang Ye-won) turns her attention on her rescuer. While this is being sorted out, a geologist named Kim Hwi (played by Park Joong-hoon) discovers an underwater disturbance is set to cause a massive tsunami. Naturally, no one listens to him since no one wants to believe that the biggest beach in the country will have to be evacuated.
By the time anyone listens, it’s already too late-ten minutes stands between the beach and water borne destruction. The cast for this movie might be large, but each character stands apart as distinctive and this makes the movie stand out above other disaster movies where the majority of the characters simply seem to be nothing more than screaming cannon fodder .
While not the most imaginative movie, Haeundae’s stellar cast and director turns just another disaster movie into something well worth watching and since there is more to this movie than rampant destruction, it’s something that’s a little easier to sink one’s teeth into. It’s definitely not the best movie out there, but it’s not a bad watch and if you’re into the genre, it’s worth seeing.

A self-styled "accident choreographer," the Brain is a professional hitman who kills his victims by trapping them in well crafted "accidents" that look like unfortunate mishaps but are in fact perfectly staged acts of crime. After one mission accidentally goes wrong, causing the life of one of his men, the Brain is convinced that this accident has been choreographed: someone is out there plotting to terminate him and his team. He becomes increasingly paranoid, walking on the thin line between reality and delusion. When he is accosted by a mysterious insurance agent Fong who happened to be on the scene of the "accident" as well, the Brain becomes obsessed that this man must be the mastermind behind a conspiracy to take him out. To regain his sanity and to safe his life, he must strive to kill Fong before he makes his next move.

The world premiere of Written By was the opening night film of the New York Asian Film Festival. I really wanted to go see it but I just couldn't swing it on either of the first two play dates with the director present. I was kind of happy when I read a less then positive review for the film but changed my mind and decided to go to the third screening when I read some positive comments and saw the trailer. I should have listened to the first review.
The plot of the film has a family trying to get over the death of the father and husband after a terrible car accident that left the daughter blind. Ten years on and the past is still not put to rest when the daughter, Melody, decides to write a novel where the father survived the accident but was blinded, and where his family all died. This begins to bring the family around and soon the father of the story is writing a novel of his own where he died and the family lived. The story spins out from there as we follow the story in various levels. There is a great deal of whimsy at times since in the story world there are ghosts and an after life.
I'm hard pressed to say something about the film, but I think the easiest thing to say is that the film is a mess. Director Wai Ka-fai has made a multi tiered film that becomes needlessly complicated. For much of the film its not really clear as to which incarnation of the story we are watching. It becomes clear at the end, but until then things jump from story to story to story for a reason that really eluded me. The problem with the film is not really the jumping from thing to thing thats the problem its just that things get so knotted that by the end its not really clear as to what the point of it all really is. The point of it ultimately seems to be that we all need something, in this case writing,or a belief in an after life, as a bridge to acceptance and getting by in life. I don't know if all of what proceeded the ending is what the ending seems to mean, which kind of comes across as a WTF moment where you're left going "thats it?".(I know that makes little sense but you'd understand if you saw the film- then again maybe not since I'm not sure what I saw)
I know I wasn't the only one who was bewildered by the film since I noticed what appeared to be several walk outs and a general feeling of what did we just see in the audience once the credits began to roll. (One guy was snoring in his seat across the aisle from me.). A discussion of the film by three or four of us in the lobby after the film concluded it was probably the directors weakest film, which I think was a polite way of saying we didn't have a clue about the film we had just seen. We all said that the most interesting thing was the Queen of the Underworld character who brings people into their next lives via a trolley car. I, like everyone else I talked to wants to see if there is really such a figure.
The film itself is for the most part very well made. Except for some of the worst, and I do mean worst, people acting blind in a film the performances are all excellent(but the blind behavior is embarrassing and laughably bad- I can't stress this enough.)
What really disappoints me about the film is that there are more than a handful of times when the film hits its stride, most of them having to do with the whimsical or fantastical elements of the story. There is also a moment later in the film when two of the characters break down emotionally that sends the film to the level where the film should have been operating all along. Regrettably the moments are only that, several minute stretches where the film seems to pull it all together.

It is acknowledged intelligence with the intention of the movie ‘Baanam’ symbols the entrance of Nara Rohit as the hero as well as the motion picture is being heading for by Chaitanya Dantuluri in addition to produced by Seshu Priyanka Dutt below Three Angels banner.
The motion picture has been shot expansively in picturesque locales along with the songs have been in black and colorless with fine literature devoid of any handle of Hindi or English.
The music is said to be an unplugged version as well as all of them are situational numbers with good quality visual effects. The tunes have been self-possessed by Mani Sharma as well as big names like Shankar Mahadevan, Ranjith, Hemachandra as well as others have rendered their voices.
Banam film is about a youngster called Bhagat. The story of the movie is about how Bhagat achieves his goal irrespective of adverse situations.
Seshu Priyanka Chalasani (daughter of C Aswini Dutt) has started a production house called ‘Three Angels Studio Pvt Ltd’ and producing a film titled "Baanam" by introducing Nara Rohith (son of Nara Rammurthy Naidu who is the brother of Chandra Babu Naidu). Telugu Movie News
This film was shot extensively in Vijayanagaram, Vizag, Araku, Ooty and Pollachi.
Chaitanya Dantuluri is making his debut as a director. Vedika plays female lead. Mani Sharma composes music. Nagaraju Gandham pens dialogues. Baanam is expected to release on 16 September.
When you think the man is down and out, Manisharma bounces back and how! Kadile padam carries the confidence and poise of a vintage Ilayaraja song, complete with superbly crafted background orchestration and incredible vocals by Shankar Mahadevan. Nalo nelena and Mogindi jeganta are lovely too, if not for that mild tedium over their arrangements – the former, by Hemachandra and Saindhavi is still an excellent listen! Padara padara is uber-inventive with its angry sound and an addictive, repetitive title phrase. Banam is literally a bolt from the blue – completely unexpected from the composer, given his recent form. Strongly recommended!

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has been invited to launch the audio ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ on August 14 in Chennai. Wondering what Imtiaz Ali has got to do with this Tamil flick? Yeah! It’s the Tamil remake of his previous directorial hit ‘Jab We Met’, which is one of the best ever-cherishing poignant flicks of Bollywood.
Well, his arrival in Chennai wouldn’t merely mark him as the filmmaker of ‘Jab We Met’ for he has more reason to rejoice. His recent release ‘Love Aaj Kal’ has witnessed tremendous record-breaking collections in Chennai box office overshadowing other Tamil releases.
The occasion will have more filmmakers addressing his significance and unique style of filmmaking. ‘Yaavarum Nalam’ fame Vikram K Kumar will also share the dais with Imtiaz along with mainstream filmmakers of Tamil industry. It’s notable that cinematographer Natraj Subramaniam, who delivered fantabulous visuals for both the films of Imtiaz, is a famous actor in Tamil.
Kannan, once an associate of director Mani Ratnam has remade ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ while Moser Baer and Blue Ocean Entertainment jointly produce the film with Bharath and Thamannah donning lead roles.
Kanden Kadhalai story is about how two strangers meet each other on a train journey and later how their lives are changed. The two strangers are played by Bharath and Tamannah.
Kanden Kadhalai is a remake of the Hindi hit film 'Jab We Met'. It revolves around two strangers who meet on a train journey. How their lives change after this forms the crux of the movie.
Tamannah plays as Thevar girl in the film. while Kareena played as Punjabi girl in Jab We Met, Tamannah who had also undergone an image makeover for this role, she even have watched Jab We Met atleast four times.
But i guess Tamannah cannot match the peppy character which Bebo did in the original movie.
Although it is a remake, she claims that she and Bharath will bring a fresh perspective to the film, thanks to director Kannan’s effort and encouragement. The two songs shot so far have come out brilliantly. Though she has done her best to live up to Kareena’s performance in Hindi lets see how it is. A few of the sequences for the film were shot in the dense forests of Pollachi,
where a woodhouse was erected. After the shooting wa over, Kannan the director of film gifted the woodhouse to Forest Department to support tourism so that it may be easy for the forest department people to keep a watch on the wild animals. Speaking about the movie, producer Dhananjayan of Moser Baer is very happy that Kannan completed the first schedule, which is 27 days ahead of what was planned initially. With
this 50 per cent of the talkie portions are over. The remake will have several interesting changes to help get a regional touch”.

The South: the final frontier. These are the pursuits of the Trawicks, Their lifelong mission To recover imbecilic fugitives, To win glory upon the battlefields of peewee football, To boldly go where no skiptracer has gone before. And maybe to get laid or something, too. Like their home state of Alabama, the Trawicks are slam - full of oddities, idiocy, contradictions, traditions, and rednecks. JD is a color-blind desperado who enjoys the company of geriatrics and harbors dreams of something more; like bombing shit. His brother Tucker has a large penis and enjoys fighting, doing whip-its, and failing out of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College. He harbors dreams of fighting, doing whip-its, and banging Lurleen B. Wallace. Big Donald is their father, a redneck Magnum P.I., who probably abused JD and Tucker when they were too little to kick his ass, but in a funny way. Nanny is the matriarch, a schizophrenic former bootlegger and rumrunner turned born-again Christian who is an angel on the ground but a demon behind the wheel. Together - but often at odds with one another - they turn the South upside-down in their pursuit of bail-jumping misfits, such as Rusty McAndrews, a diabetic and diabolical welder with a penchant for dangerous women and crack. But skiptracing is the business that pays the bills while they engage in their real passion: coaching their dynastic peewee football team, the Bombers, to Pop Warner Valhalla. In pursuit of McAndrews and the city championship, JD and company are opposed by the dastardly Cletus Yoates and his henchman Bart, who will stop at nothing to destroy the Trawick family, business, and football legacy. Along the way, the Trawicks discover the hidden and absurd underbelly of the South - and punch it.
Harris Mendheim’s first feature film, “Skiptracers,” is set in the armpit of Alabama, just beyond the crossroads of Ambition and Stupidity. It is the story of a family whose fortunes are tied up in a web of fugitives, football and fellatio.

Jimmy loves dinosaurs and sleeps on the top bunk. Unfortunately, Jimmy is 40 and shares that bunk with Bob, his 10-year-old nephew. Freshly divorced, Jimmy lives with his sister Aiko and her family while boldly searching for a new wife. His brother in-law, Tak thinks he's a disaster. And although Jimmy may lack social grace, he is convinced the best years of his life are just beginning. His plan seems like it's all falling into place when Tak's beautiful niece Ramona moves in. But once Jimmy sets his sights on stealing her from his best friend Tim, he sees his intentions go hilariously awry.
In his new comedy, White on Rice, Big Dreams Little Tokyo director Dave Boyle affirms that he is the master at the joke that you see coming, and laugh at anyway. With his new inductee into the pantheon of comedy's acute arrested development cases, he presents a catalyst for one Final Destination style calamity of social discomfort after another. It's a clockwork march towards disaster, but that doesn't prevent the catalog of relationship mishaps from being charming, genuinely funny and honestly heart warming.
While I found the premise of the well worth tracking down on DVD Big Dreams Little Tokyo to be more distinctive, White on Rice features an outstanding cast with outstanding chemistry. If you can make it to one of its screenings, it's a film that is certainly good for a laugh.
White on Rice is scheduled to open in Los Angeles and Orange County next week. Tickets are on sale for the September 11th opening, with a sneak peak. September 9th 7:30pm at the Laemmle's Pasadena Playhouse 7 sneak peak

Reviews
Few directors currently at work in France are as intriguing or mercurial as Claire Denis. Her extraordinary 1999 film Beau Travail invested the harsh reality of life in the French Foreign Legion with the formal grace of performance art. Trouble Every Day from 2001 was a perplexing exercise in arthouse horror which explored the erotic potential of cannibalism. 35 Shots Of Rum returns Denis to the sort of intimate yet impressionistic drama which marked her debut Chocolat from 1988, and her tender 2004 film about sexual longing, Vendredi Soir. Once again she undertakes a lyrical journey through the unvisited corners of the human heart, and once again audiences are asked to provide their own map.
Opening with a long, long sequence shot from the cab of a juddering commuter train as it winds its way through the Parisian suburbs, 35 Shots is a film in which the characters - like the story itself - creep imperceptibly towards a destination which we in the audience never quite see. Train-driver and single father Lionel (Alex Descas) and his student daughter Joséphine (Mati Diop) live together in cosy domestic contentment. So cosy in fact, that it's a while before the precise nature of their relationship becomes clear. Upstairs from their apartment lives a restless young guy called Noé (Grégoire Colin), for whom Joséphine has a bit of a thing. Along the corridor is cab-driver Gabrielle (Nicole Dogue), who has clearly carried a torch for Lionel for years. The sense, felt with varying degrees of urgency by all four, is that change - of the unremarkable but inevitable sort by which most of our lives evolve - is coming on down the line.
As with much of Denis' work, 35 Shots gives the impression of easy-rolling naturalism but in fact the film, which by the director's admission owes much to Japan's quiet chronicler of domestic anguish Yasujiro Ozu, is instilled with a carefully maintained air of unreality. An impromptu party in a late night café evolves into a dream-like dance sequence as the foursome smooch along to The Commodores. It's a moment which articulates the unspoken impulses crackling between them almost as effectively as the brilliantly bizarre disco finale which brought Beau Travail to such a strange yet haunting close. Denis has refined a form of filmmaking grounded in allusion and suggestion in which, like those old Magic Eye puzzles, you need to squint and stop looking for meaning, in order for the meaning to come into view.
French director Claire Denis’s marvellous latest feature is a portrait of the close relationship between widowed Parisian train driver Lionel (Alex Descas) and his affectionate student daughter, Joséphine (Mati Diop). Critics have welcomed it as both her warmest movie and, with its quiet observation of small ritual, her most affirmative and Ozu-esque. But though it’s true that ‘35 Shots’ demonstrates an extraordinary reflective ease and contains possibly more hugs and smiles than Denis’s entire oeuvre to date, that is not to say it is a film free of tribulations, tensions and taboos.
The story is simple, a collection of scenes from the life of this small family who live in a flat in the Rue de la Guadeloupe, a little nest where Lionel escapes from the loneliness of his cab and the memory of his losses, and from which Joséphine, inhibited from fullly developing her relationships with her neighbours, surrogate ‘mother’ Gabrielle (Nicole Dogue) and ‘suitor’ Noé (Grégoire Colin), must soon fly.
From this, Denis magically evokes a liberal meditation on family, harmony, loyalty and belonging and their corollaries – loss, transgression, loneliness and separation – and achieves a sweet unity, not least through a beautifully discreet use of symbols, motifs and metaphors. Thus as cinematographer Agnès Godard’s artful visual correspondences (an RER train and a block of flats shot at night) deepen an understanding of social context, the film’s various vehicles – Lionel’s train thundering into north Paris, his motorbike, the bicycle blocking the hallway – suggest not only specifics of occupation or class, but also journeys of different speeds. The film’s extraordinary economy is typified by a lovely, spontaneous café scene where the principles dance to the Commodores’ ‘Nightshift’, a mini-ballet touchingly evocative of their separate feelings, relationships and destinies.
35 Shots of Rum" - Synopsis
In a Paris suburb, a widowed metro conductor, approaching retirement, lives with his beautiful grown daughter, a college student - the object of a neighbor's romantic interest. The man's former girlfriend also lives in their building and continues to play a role in their closely-knit lives.

Mumbai, The medium-budget movie “Phir Kabhi”, starring Mithun Chakraborty and Dimple Kapadia, is going to give the big screen a miss. It will release directly on Video and Pay-Per-View DTH (Direct-To-Home) – the first Hindi film to be premiered directly on home entertainment platforms.
Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Culture Company (I) Pvt Ltd, “Phir Kabhi” has been directed by V.K. Prakash. It will be released next week by Moser Baer Home Video on DVD and VCD, apart from simultaneously releasing on Pay-Per-View across all DTH platforms, according to a statement here Thursday.
“We want to experiment with our smaller movies, if there is a model to reach audiences directly in their homes, without investing in prints and advertising for a theatrical release,” said Amrita Pandey, VP (International Distribution & Syndication), UTV Motion Pictures.
“We believe that releasing ‘Phir Kabhi’ on Home Video and DTH directly, and simultaneously, is a unique means of delivering our content straight to the audience without a huge investment in advertising and prints,” she added.
Starring Mithun and Dimple in the lead, it is a love story about two childhood sweethearts who meet again in their twilight years.
“Releasing ‘Phir Kabhi’ directly on our platform… will start a new trend of films being made specifically for DTH audiences,” said Salil Kapoor, COO, Dishtv.
In the US and other western markets, a lot of films are released directly on DVD and are a major contributor to the Home Video business.
This is the first time a movie studio has decided to premiere a movie on home entertainment platforms instead of the traditional theatrical release route.
Industry insiders claim that UTV has taken the new step to avoid the huge flow of movies releasing in the second half of 2009.
EXPECTATIONS
One can’t be expected to get excited when presented with the music of Phir Kabhi. After all the film comes out of nowhere, features the likes of Mithun Chakraborty, Dimple Kapadia and Rati Agnihotri which pretty much conveys that the film is centered on the lives of senior citizens and doesn’t carry any buzz with it. Moreover, there is no promotion yet for the film even as the album is out. Yes, the album carries the name Shantanu Moitra as the composer and Ajay Jhingran as the lyricist but that’s not really good enough to make one look for a moon with Phir Kabhi. And yes, a dull title doesn’t help the cause either.

MUSIC
Phir Kabhi is a short album with only four songs in it. ‘Dekho Jo Dekho Main Hoon Bhola Bhala Banda, Aankhon Se Phenkun Seedhe Dil Pe Ye Fanda’ - These are the lyrics of the opening number ‘Dekho Ji Dekho’ which is as screechy a beginning for an album as it gets! Dibyendu Mukherji begins the assault and Sunidhi Chauhan takes it forward in this song which comes across as a confused composition. The number tries to bring in the style from the 60s and today with an element of jazz to it. Result? A lot of noise which is best left ignored.
Next to come is the title song ‘Phir Kabhi’ which is reasonably better though only in the parts where Shaan is heard. Shantanu Moitra himself comes for some interludes but hardly helps the song with his rendition that appears to be based on folk music. The song too by itself is completely situational and is yet another track that one wishes to move on pronto.
Lyricist Ajay Jhingran decides to sing ‘Bhai Re’ which is set in the mode similar to that of many a Shantanu Moitra tunes. With Shreya Ghoshal joining him, Ajay continues imparting Bengali flavour to it. An old fashioned number that just manages to hang on, ‘Bhai Re’ isn’t any different from what one has heard in Shantanu’s earlier albums like Parineeta or Lage Raho Munnabhai.
Last to come is ‘Jheeni Jheeni’ that has Bhupinder Singh coming along with Hamsika Iyer. An extremely slow moving track that is almost an unplugged truck, this love song follows ‘Bhai Re’ in its overall treatment. Picking on from where ‘Piyu Bole’ [Parineeta] left, ‘Jheeni Jheeni’ is barely passable this time around and only becomes boring as it progresses.
Rest of the album is filled with Shantanu’s earlier compositions from Welcome To Sajjanpur (’Sita Ram Sita Ram’, ‘Dildara’) and Lage Raho Munnabhai (title song, ‘Pal Har Har Pal’).
OVERALL
Phir Kabhi doesn’t work. For a very miniscule segment of audience searching for folk and classical flavour in their music, a couple of tunes from Phir Kabhi may cut the ice. But for the masses, there is absolutely nothing to pick and choose from.

Movie Plot
Hector Villa, physically tough, but emotionally self-destructive, is one of the millions of illegal migrant workers vying for a new life in the U.S., and will do everything he can to rise above picking fruit in the dirt. Hector dreams of being a boxer, like his father before him, but finds he has to fight just to survive the grim reality of living on a Texas Ranch. During the day Hector works long hours under the scorching sun. But at night, he trades his work gloves for boxing gloves, fighting in the surrounding bars and converted barns, where a five dollar entrance fee and a few rounds in a makeshift ring can score the winner more than a days pay in the sweltering fields.
Hector Villa, a ranked fighter, flees Mexico with his friend and mentor, Billy, after being told he must throw a fight. He and Billy seek sanctuary as farm laborers on a ranch, where Hector is eventually recognized and forced to fight the owner's evil son.
Review
Fight coordinator-turned-film director Jimmy Nickerson (Raging Bull, Rocky) helms this tale of a self-destructive amateur boxer seeking to follow in his father's footsteps by making a name for himself in the ring. Hector Villa (Kuno Becker) may have the spirit of a winner, but his better judgment is consistently clouded by his anger. Though Hector picks fruit on the Texas ranch of Big Al Stevens during the daylight hours, nightfall finds the migrant laborer earning more than a days pay by fighting for cash in local bars and converted barns. When Hector's mother, Rosa, falls ill, her loyal son takes as many fights as possible in order to pay for her expensive heart medication. But Big Al's son Robert is the undefeated champ of the local boxing scene, and when Big Al learns that Hector may be capable of delivering the blow that could dethrone his son, he has his henchmen beat Hector and leave him for dead in the Mexican desert. Now homeless and penniless on the desolate streets of Mexico, Hector is forced to literally fight for his life. When Hector learns that his mother has died, he seeks out local fighting legend Billy Jenkins in hopes that the grizzled former boxer and trainer will help him develop the skills needed to settle the score with Big Al and Robert. The man who once served as Robert's coach before learning that the unscrupulous young fighter was "on the juice," Billy knows that there is no way Hector could beat an opponent with such an unfair advantage. Upon learning that Big Al has accepted Hector's challenge to take on his son Robert thanks to the persuasive efforts of the migrant community, Hector and Billy begin training for the fight that could make or break Hector's future career in the ring.
