Reviews
If you’re like most people, you’ve probably had a childhood experience with terror that has accompanied you throughout life. When I was growing up, the girl across the street from me spent hours crying and puking after deciding to watch Children of the Corn by herself one night. It was a brave decision which won her both my admiration, and a lifetime of nightmares haunted by Isaac.
My most vivid memory of terror — a true terror which made me physically sick with dread — was reading Clive Barker’s Books of Blood when I was way too young. The Books of Blood are a collection of short stories and by the time I was done with the second one (Midnight Meat Train), I had been changed forever, precious childhood innocence stripped. Never before had I even entertained the idea of such evil.
And now The Book of Blood is a film, coming to BluRay and DVD on September 22nd. It joins two stories out of the book, and the trailer looks genuinely scary:
Still it’s straight-to-video, and that’s almost always a guarantee of shittiness.
Clive Barker hasn’t really been done right by Hollywood, excepting (perhaps) for Hellraiser. Here’s hoping this project turns out to be a surprise.
Update: I didn’t realize that the story which robbed my childhood innocence had also been made into a movie. I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it.
This is the frame story for the entire "Books of Blood" series by Clive Barker. A psychic researcher, Mary Florescu, has employed a quack medium named Simon McNeal to investigate a haunted house. Alone in an upstairs room, McNeal at first fakes visions, but then the ghosts really do come for him. They attack him and carve words in his flesh, and these words, claims the narrator, form the rest of the stories, stories written on a literal, living Book of Blood.
A paranormal expert discovers a house that is at the intersection of so-called "highways" transporting souls in the afterlife.
Book of Blood is a Horror Film currently in production based on a short story by Clive Barker of the same title, published in Volume One of the collection Books of Blood. The plot features a young man who finds a place of transportation of souls in the afterlife. It is being directed by John Harrison. Leading actors include Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, and Reg Fuller. Other actors include Doug Bradley, James Watson, Simon Bamford, and Romana Abercromby.
Book of Blood is the second story to be adapted from Barker’s collection, following The Midnight Meat Train. During his appearance at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors he noted this film will be followed by Dread, Pig Blood Blues, and then Madonna.
Adapted and directed by John Harrison from one of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood, the film shoot occurred in Scotland through December 2007 and into early 2008. Following exposure at the 2008 European Film Market, and the completion of the FX shoot in London, the film is now in post-production.
