Director N Shankar is known for bringing out some revolutionary films and this time, he has chosen to mould the current struggle for a separate Telangana state. In order to attract the crowds to the theatres, he has roped in artistes like Jagapatih Babu, Nagineedu, Smriti Irani, AVS and Siva Reddy. He has almost succeeded in portraying the struggle by incorporating several contemporary incidents that had occurred including the students’ movement. He has also perfectly mixed a love story, as an under current in order to make the film worth watching and otherwise, the subject would have been like a documentary and completely dry. Read on for Jai Bolo Telangana review.
Story:
Jayamma (Smriti Irani) is a kind hearted woman, whose husband Bandagi Gopanna (Jagapatih Babu) has sacrificed his life for the sake of Telangana movement. Not only Gopanna, but also his grand father laid down his life in Telangana Raitanga Sayudha Poratam, and Gopanna’s father also fought the Nizam rulers and lost his life for the Telangana people. After Gopanna's death, his followers want his friend Varshit to take this struggle forward. But he refuses to do so as he doesn’t want to sacrifice his wife’s ‘Thali and Pasupu-Kumkuma’ at an early stage as he is in love with Sahaja. Meanwhile, he realises the ground realities. How the people of Telangana were struggling, how they are selling their gold and jewellery to educate their children, how the children of Telangana though excel in studies could not get jobs and how the people of Telangana were being cheated by the foreign agents in the name of jobs.
Though he joins the struggle for the separate Telangana state, the crooked politicians, industrialists try to suppress the movement by launching Samaikyandhra Movement in other parts of state. At this juncture, the statement of Union Home Minister P Chdambaram announcing the decision to start a process of state bifurcation comes like a breather. However, the formation of Srikrishna Committee sprinkles water on their enthusiasm. The politicians, industrialists suppress the students movement with the help of police branding them as anti-social elements. to separate the state, Jayamma launches a fast-unto-death which ultimately foiled by the police. What happens next will form the climax of the movie.
Performance:
The director has succeeded in highlighting the emotions of the people of Telangana and the audiences could identify themselves with the Telangana movement in the film. Though Jagapatih Babu is the protagonist, his role was limited to giving an inspiration to the protesters, as all the three roles he has portrayed end abruptly, of course to the bullets of the police. The director has included some commercial elements in the film like love thread keeping entertainiment factor in mind. Though, he has tried to highlight the Telangana movement, he has not able to explain clearly on how the Telangana people are cheated by the people of other regions. Through Siva Reddy’s character, he has tried to explain that even people of neighbouring Tamil Nadu are also in favour of a separate Telangana. Most important point to mention here that the director has not touched the grass root causes like why Telangana continued to remain backward and he has mainly focussed on contemporary issues. Through Jayamma’s character, he has tried to explain about KCR’s fast and other such issues.
Music by Chakri is exemplary and the speciality of the film is that KCR penned a lyric that goes like… ‘Garadi Chestundru…’ and Gaddar penned another lyric ‘Podustunna Poddumeeda…’. While KCR appears in a clipping, Gaddar also shook legs for his song on the screen. Vandemataram Srinivas has given life to the title song and there is a massive response to all the songs in the film. Editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao is up to the mark.
Verdict:
As a whole, Jai Bolo Telangana is meant for the people of Telangana and for them alone. Those who has sympathy towards Telangana and its backwardness would definitely appreciate the efforts of the director. The director should be complimented for successfully highlighting the present struggle for a separate state and how the students are being exploited. The film would definitely become a hit in Telangana region, but there will not be any takers for such subject in other regions like Andhra and Rayalaseema. The climax of the film was abrupt, as the director has not given any solution to the burning issue.

Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin…The film's anthemic love ballad, regarded as one of the finest love songs ever composed for Hindi cinema, rings through your heart after the lengthy film is done - and let's face it, nearly 3 hours of playing-time for a long-forgotten war saga can get tedious when you have the next chapter in the Egyptian civil-war waiting at home.
Yes, Hum Dono is back. The 1961 film about two look-alike soldiers who become friends at war, is as far-fetched in plot as…say, today's Dabangg or James Cameron's Avatar. Indeed the film's old-world values of valour, integrity, loyalty, fidelity and trustworthiness seem to belong to another era, if not a completely different planet. They are rescued from fading by computer-coloured velocity.
Admittedly even today Hum Dono makes a fairly engaging triangular love story with war at its backdrop. The coloured version that has come to us now leaves us with mixed feelings. Though at first one enjoys the splash of colour that is added to V Ratra's outstanding black-and-white cinematography a lot of the film's original visual intensity is lost in colorized translation.
We are left wondering who decided what colour Dev Anand's shirt or Sadhana's saree was meant to be! Did the colour-generating department check with the film's core team to decide the colour schemes? If not, is it ethical or even legally permissible to tamper with the film's creators' original vision?
The Dolby-enhanced sound leaves no room for quibble. Jaidev's music score, considered by many aficionados to be one the 10 finest Hindi motion-picture soundtracks of all times, heals all the wounds of excessive coloured flamboyance. Whether it is Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhosle's Abhi na jao chhod kar or Lata Mangeshlar's immortal Bhajan Allah tero naam, or those two imperishable Rafi Ghazals Kabhi khud pe kabhi halaat pe rona aaya and Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya…you just can't help being swept into the sheer melody of the moment.
The casually stylish way the songs are shot, the sharp close-ups being intercut with lyrical poetic long-shots, incidental but intense interludes of passion played out in the visual detailing, all carry the distinctive stamp of Vijay Anand who wrote Hum Dono. The film's direction is credited to Amarjeet who later directed Dev Anand in a film called Gambler.
Ah, Dev Anand…a star beyond any definition of stardom!! He shines with meteoric melancholy in the double role of men at war with themselves, much more than for his country. The way this debonair actor enacts the solo numbers by Rafi makes you wonder if the song came first. Or was the song inspired by the face that conveys the numbers on screen?
Sadhana (impish, coquettish) and Nanda (tremulously poignant) are lovely supplements to the Dev Anand mystique. What was he thinking when he romanced these beautiful ladies? Surely more than what Sahir Ludhianvi's lovelorn lyrics describe!
They don't make stars like Dev Anand any more. They never will. Or for that matter a film so suffused in the splendour of its own cultivated grace is impossibly to come by in today's era of pelvic passion.
Abhi na jaao chhod kar indeed.

Filmmakers don't blame critics for the failure of their films for nothing – they have a reason. Of course, there are films that do well in spite of being bashed by the critics because of factors like star power, good content and good word of mouth but their opinion determines the fate of a film to a large extent. So, the makers of Yeh Saali Zindagi makers have a good reason to be happy as the film has got rave reviews from all quarters.
Popular critic Taran Adarsh is all praise for the film. "Yeh Saali Zindagi is a striking example of new age cinema. A daring film with a brand new approach, it's impulsive and engaging with skilful direction and power-packed performances as its strong points. This is one more solid attempt that takes the graph of Hindi cinema to a greater level," He wrote. "Sudhir Mishra is back in form. You need a strong belly to stomach this one!" he added.
Nikhat Kazmi thinks that one finds Yeh Saali Zindagi difficult to understand but is a good film. "It does sound a bit confusing but if you're alert and attentive, you're going to love this merry-go-round. Specially since the ensemble cast breathes fire and passion in their performances," she wrote. "Dark, devious and different, Yeh Saali Zindagi is brain-and-brawn drama. Wish the Censor hadn't beeped so much," she added.
Anupama Chopra describes the film as ‘most-twisted film'. "Yeh Saali Zindagi is the most twisted love story you'll see this year. There are so many characters, sub- plots, voice-overs, flash-backs, intrigues and counter-intrigues that you will need a master-guide to keep it straight. It is much too long, indulgent and exhausting but if you're willing to work with it, there is considerable fun to be had," she wrote. "Yeh Saali Zindagi doesn't hit all the high marks it sets for itself but it provides enough crackle to keep you entertained. Check it out," she added.
However, Blessy Chettiar is a bit critical about the film. She is of the opinion that one needs patience to watch it though a good one. "Yeh Saali Zindagi has romance at its core, and a lot of thrill is thrown in, too, taking the audience from the streets of Delhi to its outskirts in Haryana to Rajasthan and, finally, to a gripping climax at Mumbai's Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf)," she wrote. She went on to say that the switching of scenes from one city to another confuses the viewers.
Yeh Saali Zindagi is a romantic thriller featuring Irrfan Khan, Arunoday Singh, Chitrangada Singh and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. It tells the story of two persons who go all out to win the hearts of the women they love. It tells how far one has to go to win one's love.

Bollywood’s arch rivals Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan have been keeping distance from each other ever since they got into a brawl a few years ago, but if all goes well, they would come face to face tonight. Their common friend Aamir Khan has invited them to the wedding reception of his nephew Imran Khan and wife Avantika Malik. So, there is good chance of patching up if they accept his invitation.
