Rapunzel Movie Review: The Grimm yarn of Rapunzel, the girl with the long, golden hair, has been tangled, twisted and extended to get her out of the tower and into the company of a dashing bad boy, musicalized in old-school Broadway fashion and shot through with broad comedy and action rendered in vivid 3D. The Disney name and the studio’s all-powerful promo combined are sure to propel this profitably through the holiday season and beyond, though the question lingers as to the extent of resistance preteen boys will show to this girl-centric romp.
Walt Disney himself pondered an animated Rapunzel feature as far back as the 1940s, and there are two major elements in the film his studio finally has produced that strongly register as Disney trademarks: the flawlessly prettified rendering of nature and the leading characters as well as the incisive portrait of an evil, manipulative villainess. On the more current side of the ledger are the forthrightly adventurous heroine, egregiously present-day phraseology (“Best day ever!”) and the previously unimagined uses to which Rapunzel puts her 70 feet of golden hair, including as a whip and lasso. So shimmering and lush are the girl’s locks that shampoo commercials never will look the same.
Transformed from the original tale’s daughter of poor parents into a princess kidnapped by the scheming Mother Gothel for the power the girl’s golden locks have to keep the woman ageless, the story devised by screenwriter Dan Fogelman (Cars, Bolt) pivots on the tension between Gothel’s need to keep Rapunzel away from the outside world and the yearning of the captive, who’s about to turn 18, to discover it. “When Will My Life Begin?” — the initial musical number from star Disney composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater — not only enunciates her desires but shows that, during her youthful isolation, she has been extensively exposed to the arts through reading, painting, music and so on.
Still, given the modern take here, it might have been amusing to acknowledge that growing up in solitary confinement might give a girl some complexes, neuroses and misconceptions about life on the outside. Once she absconds with a dashing thief (not a prince) with the unlikely moniker of Flynn Rider, a bumpy learning curve as to the real world could have provided a bountiful extra layer of humor and behavioral interest.
As it is, the film contents itself with charting the inevitable conversion of Flynn from the charming scoundrel who with two hulking highwaymen types steal the royal crown to a domesticated escort suitable for the daughter of the idyllic realm’s king and queen. Along the way, there is a rollicking encounter in a roadside tavern with a band of ruffians who turn out to be as congenial and musically prone as the seven dwarfs as well as the shenanigans of a comically vigilant white horse, all of which reflects the antic showbizzy approach one associates with John Lasseter, the driving force behind Pixar who now also runs Disney Animation.
Although she is sidelined for significant periods, there still is the determined Mother Gothel to reckon with. One can’t quite put her in the pantheon of evil alongside Snow White’s queen or the Wicked Witch of the West, but she’s a formidable first cousin as she stops at nothing to maintain her hold on her prize. No small part of her power stems from the dynamite performance of Broadway star Donna Murphy, who socks over her dialogue and musical vocalizations with insinuating flair.
In markedly blander roles, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi do agreeably expressive work with utilitarian dialogue that feels too contemporaneously American and sturdy songs in a throwback style. It’s hard to think of a modern film with a more pristine appearance; every frame looks like it’s just been cleaned and polished by Cinderella herself.
The 3D work is excellent, though the discrepancy in screen brightness between what is seen with and without glasses never has been more pronounced, at least at the screening caught; normally, one can expect the image to dim by 25-30% upon donning 3D shades, but here the light of the film onscreen was cut roughly in half. Los Angeles - Sexy singer Christina Aguilera is to make her movie debut in a starring role in the musical Burlesque.
According to Variety she will play an "ambitious small town girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles burlesque club."
The film will start shooting later this year. This is the first time that Aguilera, a former Disney child star who has won four Grammy Awards, is appearing in a movie. However, she did voice a character in the animated film Shark Tale.
Christina Aguilera’s love of burlesque is no secret. If she didn’t have such great pipes, odds are she’d have grown up to be Dita von Teese. So it makes sense that her first real movie role will be in what is basically a burlesque movie.
Variety says Christina will make her movie acting debut in a movie musical called Burlesque. In it, she’ll play a small town girl with a big voice who finds family, love, and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club. What the hell is neo-burlesque? It’s a lot like classic burlesque, except it encompasses more than just a strip tease and a comedian with a spinning bowtie. Those things are still present, but modern dance and mini-theatrical plays may also be involved. Presumably all of this is performed by barely dressed women in fishnets.
Sony’s Screen Gems division is responsible for Burlseque, which was co-written and will be directed by Steven Antin. Antin, believe it or not, was actually in Goonies. Small part, you wouldn’t remember him, and besides it’s more likely he got the job based on his involvement in that awful Pussycat Dolls reality series . I doubt having once been Troy Perkins held much sway with the studio’s stingy money lenders.

Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyun Movie Review: As far as scrutinizing a gay relationship is concerned, this isn’t a patch on Ang Lee’s ‘Brokeback Mountain’. But still…it tries.
This fatally flawed look at the dark secrets of an Anglo-Indian family where the single mother sleeps with her cheesy boss for lack of choice and the elder married son with a child makes out with a man leaves us with some positive thoughts.
‘Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyun’ is the first Hindi film to look at a gay relationship with some degree of dispassionate honesty. The script makes room for approximately 22-24 characters, which includes the entire malfunctional D’Souza family, their friends and lovers.
This is Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ gone to seed! The characters are not badly written. Even the performances are at times, convincing. And it takes inhuman amounts of guts for two male actors to make love on screen. Hats off to Kapil Sharma and newcomer Yuvraaj Parasher for strolling into alternate sexuality with such naked earnestness.
However, earnestness per se is not a redeeming quality unless compounded with creative conviction.

The Story: No, this is not a new version of the Dragonball live-action movie, this is the Nicolas Cage magic movie called The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and we have 10 SETS of FREE TICKETS to the Neonpunch.com reader that has a few magic tricks up their own sleeves.
It seems as if Disney remembered that it had its own magical boy story, and before Harry comes back for two final movies, Nicolas Cage will teach Jay (Tropic Thunder) Baruchel how to “kame-hame-ha” or at least get a bunch of broomsticks to clean his house.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a live action version of that Mickey Mouse movie you may remember from when you were a kid which in turn is based on the 1890 poem by Paul Dukas and the 1797 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ballad that we totally knew and didn’t have to look up anywhere because we’re totally cultured – so there.
Its got Nic Cage, Dr. Octopus Alfred Mollina and a kid that isn’t annoying: Jay Baruschel – but the real magic in the movie isn’t the tricks but the appearance of Monica Bellucci – whom we love seeing her giant sized beautiful face every time we pass Sogo. Balthazar then becomes an immortal, roaming the world in search of a boy who is destined to be the next Merlin, in order to free his colleagues and defeat Morgana. By sheer coincidence he comes upon a boy named Dave in New York City in the year 2000. The boy has accidentally come into Balthazar’s antique shop, a front for his activities. As he looks at the nesting doll, the evil layer is suddenly released in his presence, and a battle between Horvath and Balthazar takes place in front of him. They end up locked in another container, in a spell lasting ten years.
After running from the shop, the boy is retrieved and embarrassed in front of his school group, and grows up as a tech nerd who ends up teaching at NYU. What he doesn’t know is that he is the boy that Balthazar has been searching for. Full grown Dave (Jay Baruchel) encounters Balthazar again ten years to the day of their first meeting, this time brought into the battle after the two other sorcerers have been freed.
It will now be up to Balthazar to teach his new apprentice the magical ropes, to defeat Morgana and Horvath, who has recruited a magician of his own, Drake Stone (Tony Kebbell). The final battle will take place on the streets of Manhattan.
There are two tremendous attributes in this film – the performances of Nicolas Cage and Alfred Molina, and the basis in mythology that adds a powerful incentive to the magical fireworks. Believing in the complex set-up of the typical “good vs. evil” stand off provides an urgency to the defeat of Morgana. Steeping it in the King Arthur story makes it all the more accessible and cool.
Cage has gratefully found a character for his method acting weirdness that is appropriate. His wizard apprentice combines desperation, gravitas and a sense of lifestyle/humor evolved over the thousand years he has roamed through history. His reaction to most situations is world weary, and he projects that onto his apprentice Dave. Some of the early training takes on a Chaplin-esque slapstick with Cage at the helm.
And like his villain in “Spider-Man 2,” Alfred Molina knows what to do with pure evil. He starts with a basis of no regret or humanity, and in this film adds the wacky associate Drake Stone (who in the real world has become a David Copperfield-type Vegas magician) for comic relief. Molina is the type of actor that could read the phone book on film effectively, and his casting provides the oomph that legitimizes the confrontation.
Less effective are the subplots and casting of Dave. Jay Baruchel has made a fortune (presumably) playing the nerd, but here he seems misplaced. Perhaps he is lacking a sense of innocence because of his technological background circa 2010. The subplot involving a romance with a girl (Teresa Palmer) he has known since 6th grade is disappointing, even as it is associated with the famous scene from “Fantasia,” the brooms and mops coming to life to clean his bachelor pad. The Summer Films of 2010 also continues its awkward pose display. Between “The Last Airbender,” “The Karate Kid” and this film there have been more strange poses to appear magical or in fight mode than a year of Hong Kong “chop-sockys.”
The fight scene runs a little long, but again because of its mythological roots it is more telling, and arguably symbolic as portrayed in New York City. Monica Bellucci makes a welcome cameo in the end as Veronica, stunningly beautiful after being locked in a doll container for a thousand years.
Disney has found the formula to both honor its Sorcerer’s Apprentice/Fantasia past and appeal to the kid-centric action lust of the current age. It helps, too, that Nic Cage is one weird dude.

Horvath is determined to claim New York City for his own evil purposes, and enlists an illusionist (Tony Kebbell) to help him toward that end. Given the formidable forces working against him, Blake does not feel that he can accomplish this mission alone. To help in his venture, he seeks out a seemingly average guy, Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), who is recruited to be Blake’s apprentice. Stutler is initially skeptical, and reluctant to get involved, but eventually is convinced by Blake to help in this cause. Blake gives Stutler a crash course in magic, and mishaps invariably ensue. There is also a love interest in peril angle to the storyline that provides additional motivation for Stutler. Together, Blake and Stutler take on Horvath in a classic good versus evil struggle.
