Yesterday was the big interview day at the “Couples Retreat” junket in Bora Bora. It was also a big day for the South Pacific mosquitoes to discover how tasty I could be. I have a feeling they’ll miss my sweet flesh more than I’ll miss the postcard perfect vistas here. But you don’t want to hear the whining of a guy working in Bora Bora. The day was unique for a variety of reasons. In keeping with the theme of my post the other day I’ll share with you some more useful life lessons I picked up.
Malin Akerman Makes A Delightful Margarita. God bless contrived interview settings because otherwise a scenario like this would be Highly unlikely to take place. Yes, for a portion of the afternoon, the super sweet and lovely “Watchmen” star mixed some cocktails for Vince Vaughn and myself as we chatted about unwinding in Bora Bora, »
From Hollywood Crush: It's pretty incredible that even in the most remote, exotic places of the world - you can still find "Twilight" fever. Case in point — I'm in Bora Bora for the "Couples Retreat" junket. It took 21 hours to get here from NYC, a transit time that included three different flights. If you look up Bora Bora on a map, you see it's literally in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. All of this meaning ... it's a gorgeously isolated island. Well, during some free time, Movies Editor Josh Horowitz and I decided to do some exploring on the mainland. So Josh, his lovely wife Jenny, and I hopped on a small boat to be whisked away to the tiny town of Vaitape. We were dropped off in the main marketplace, which was actually only a little strip of about four different shops.
Couples Retreat is coming to give all married couples a jolt of comedic therapy. Vince Vaughn headlines the film and it also stars Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman.
Nick Allen talked about the trailer for Couples Retreat back in July.
Jason Bateman is coming off the comedy Extract and here he talks about getting to have his character created just for him.
Jon Favreau has now been in six movies with his buddy Vince Vaughn (including this one) … can you name them all? I list them at the bottom of this post so you don’t have to be driven crazy.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the uncomfortable yoga scene. Kristen Bell talks about it here.
You’ll recognize Malin Akerman from either The Proposal and 27 Dresses (if you’re a girl) or Watchmen (if you’re a guy).
I.d rate the chances of Couples Retreat actually being funny as shockingly slim. But I.ll see it anyway and I might even enjoy it, for exactly the same reason I stop a minute and stare into a fish tank, should a glass contraption full of aquatic creatures float past my eye. Relaxation. Couples Retreat appears primarily to be pretty, scantily women hanging out in a beautiful setting with fat, disgusting men engaging in mildly titillating humor. It.s a fantasy really, a modern day Garden of Eden created right there on screen provided of course you too are a fat disgusting man. All that.s missing really are the feeders of Vaal. I guess that makes Vince Vaughn Vaal. Below we have seven sunny clips from Couples Retreat in which you.ll see the occasional elderly male asscrack under a palm tree, but also the occasional Kristen Bell »

In the post-war, pre-Beatles London suburbs, a bright schoolgirl is torn between studying for a place at Oxford and the more exciting alternative offered to her by a charismatic older man
Reviews
An Education" is the story of a teenage girl's coming-of-age set in 1961 London, a city caught between the drab, post-war 1950s and the glamorous, more liberated decade to come.
Jenny (Carey Mulligan) stands on the brink of becoming a woman: a brilliantly witty and attractive 16-year-old whose suburban life is about to be blown apart by the utterly unsuitable 30-something David (Peter Sarsgaard).
Urbane and witty, David manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour). David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike). Just as Jenny's family's long-held dream of getting their brilliant daughter into Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life.
Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a bright young girl on the cusp of her 17th birthday who finds herself in a whirlwind romance with a much older David (Peter Sarsgaard). Prior to meeting David, Jenny was trying to excel in her life by going to a prep school to get into Oxford. Once she sees the lifestyle David can provide, one she never imagined might so easily be hers, she is hooked and thoughts of Oxford go out the window. Then, when things are looking pretty good for Jenny with the dashing (yet a little too smooth) David, the truth hits her like a ton of bricks. Jenny goes from being a bright eyed school girl to a sophisticated young lady and then all the way back to questioning if she really knows who she is at all. Any more info will ruin the story. Go watch it and enjoy! An Education won the Audience Choice award and the Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
It's 1961 and attractive, bright 16-year-old schoolgirl, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is poised on the brink of womanhood, dreaming of a rarefied, Gauloise-scented existence as she sings along to Juliette Greco in her Twickenham bedroom. Stifled by the tedium of adolescent routine, Jenny can't wait for adult life to begin. Meanwhile, she's a diligent student, excelling in every subject except the Latin that her father is convinced will land her the place she dreams of at Oxford University.
One rainy day, her suburban life is upended by the arrival of an unsuitable suitor, 30-ish David (Peter Sarsgaard). Urbane and witty, David instantly unseats Jenny's stammering schoolboy admirer, Graham (Matthew Beard). To her frank amazement, he even manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour), and effortlessly overcomes any instinctive objections to their daughter's older, Jewish suitor.
Very quickly, David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike). David replaces Jenny's traditional education with his own version, picking her up from school in his Bristol roadster and whisking her off to art auctions and smoky clubs.
Under the pretext of an introduction to C.S. Lewis, David arranges to take Jenny on a weekend jaunt to Oxford with Danny and Helen. Later, using an ingenious mixture of flattery and fibbery, he persuades her parents to allow him to take their only daughter to Paris for her 17th birthday. David suggests that his "Aunt Helen" will once again act as a chaperone. Jack and Marjorie do not know that Jenny has chosen the date and place to lose her virginity.
Paris is all that Jenny imagined it would be, sex with David somewhat less so. On her return to Twickenham, Jenny's school friends are thrilled with her newfound sophistication but her headmistress (Emma Thompson) is scandalised and her English teacher Miss Stubbs (Olivia Williams) is deeply disappointed that her prize pupil seems determined to throw away her evident gifts and certain chance of higher education.
Just as the family's long-held dream of getting their brilliant daughter into Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life. Will David be the making of Jenny or her undoing?

Crazy dads strike in today’s latest new pics post, including fresh new looks at the Gerard Butler-Jamie Foxx action thriller “Law Abiding Citizen” (”Get ready to root for the bad guy!” should be the film’s motto) and the horror remake of “The Stepfather”, which is unfortunately Rated PG-13, so don’t expect any gore-filled kills, you horror nuts you. “Citizen” co-stars Leslie Bibb, Jamie Foxx, Josh Stewart, Regina Hall, Bruce McGill, Christian Stolte, Viola Davis, Colm Meaney, and Michael Kelly. “The Stepfather” is fronted by Penn Badgley, Amber Heard, Christopher Meloni, Sela Ward, Dylan Walsh, Jason Wiles, Jon Tenney, Sherry Stringfield, Skyler Samuels, and Braeden Lemasters.

Do not trust every one as you see. Be careful when you come across some one and some time it lead you in to big trouble. This is the connotation of the step father (2009).

During that time, Michael Petersen, the boy, faded away and 'Charles Bronson,' his superstar alter ego, took center stage.
Reviews
A man with such a notorious, almost mythical, persona as Charles Bronson requires as seriously full-on and committed performance. And looking at actor Tom Hardy you wouldn't think he'd end up being the guy, not least because he just doesn't look like the man. But Hardy is clearly determined to prove any naysayers wrong, as by gaining over three stone and putting on what seems like Bronson's actual skin and not just a costume, Hardy is as convincing and committed as one could hope for. He gives what you could fittingly describe as a force of nature performance, one which commands attention for every minute he appears on screen (which, thankfully, is almost the whole time), distracting the viewer from any flaws the film has. Whatever acting awards are nearest Bronson's release, Hardy definitely deserves them for this career-defining performance.
It's undoubtedly a violent film in a sardonic, Clockwork Orange way which could understandably be taken as a film that glorifies violence. Male viewers are more likely to get a kick out of the film in a Fight Club sort of way, but it is true to some extent that the violence is just there and nothing more. It's never really clear what director Nicholas Winding Refn wants to say about Bronson; is it bad he has spent 34 years of his life behind bars? Or does he deserve all that he gets? Is the violence he commits so prolifically something to be looked down on? Or it justified as some sort of release of male aggression? It's an entertaining tale but without much meaning to it, at least not a very clear one.
Most biopics adopt a style of showing the central figure grow up, go through whatever they did in their field, and by the end leave things either ambiguous (see, for example, Walk The Line) or close everything off (often with the person's death). But Bronson almost seems on a mission to be unique in the genre, and it succeeds almost on that note alone. It may not have the emotional resonance some biopics do, but that is an almost welcome sacrifice if what we get is so different from what we've seen before.
Bronson tells of the life of Michael "Charles Bronson" Petersen, a man described by the media as "the most violent prisoner in Britain." The film chronicles his 34 years in prison, showcasing various chunks throughout that time of the violence which has caused him such a long stay on the inside (he hasn't actually killed anyone), and even his brief brush with freedom partway into his sentence.

Chris Rock explores the wonders of African-American hairstyles. |
Behind the scenes here lurk a few dudes who have brought us some of the finest short-attention-span TV, so it's no wonder GH is -- I'm going to try and describe it without any puns -- crammed with quick testimonials from a range of familiar faces and sociopolitical without a heavy hand. I'm surprised it's being released in the fall, however, since it feels like this comedy-doc could have swapped places with The Cove. Meanwhile, remember a few years back when documentaries such a Spellbound broke through into mainstream pop culture? I hope GH brings back the Fun Documentary era.
Synopsis
Basically, 'Good hair' is defined as straight hair. That concept has social and political implications, and fuels a billion dollar industry.
When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head. Rock visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Filmmaker Jeff Stilson follows Rock to hair salons, barber shops, celebrities' homes and the annual Bonner Bros. Hair Show, an African-American hairstyle expo that culminates in the Hair Battle Royale, in which where star-status stylists - including Tanya Crume, Kevin Kirk, Jason Griggers, Freddie J and Derek J -- stage spectacular, outrageously costumed, carefully choreographed performances in which they style hair while dancing and doing acrobatics to win the best stylist title.
Interviewed at length, actress Nia Long reveals that she's completely obsessed with her weave, and that meeting up with a lover in the shower -- where her hair might get wet and nappy -- is more intimate than getting into bed with him. Also interviewed, women who work as teachers, secretaries and other professions say they spend a small fortune, even go into debt, to have their hair relaxed or get weaves. And, assuring equal opportunity, Rock interviews African-American men, some of whom pay for the 'good hair' of the women in their lives, admitting that it's important to them, too, or raising their eyes as an expression of 'what can you
Beneath Chris Rock's smart and extremely funny commentary is a solidly researched study about what are in fact racist attitudes towards physical appearance. People with 'good hair' (i.e. straight hair) get better jobs, are more popular, have better sex lives.

On the flip side, 'Nappy' hair is ugly. 'Nappy' hair is also black. And, the preoccupation with fitting the popular, media-supported concept of beauty has given rise to an industry that attracts billions of consumer dollars every year -- dollars that could and would otherwise be used to fill more substantial needs, such as education and eating better quality foods. The film is provocative and very moving, especially when you see that the sometimes torturous process of hair straightening begins when African-American women are just tots of two or three years of age. "Yes, it hurts," they say. So, the film raises a serious question about whether the popular slogan "Black is Beautiful" should include natural hair.
