Modhi Vilaiyattu tamil Movie

Cast and Crew

Cast: Vinay, Kjal Agarwal, Saran, Santhan...
Director: Saran

Revirws

After striking a lean patch in his last couple of films, director Saran was keen to bounce back. In "Modhi Vilayadu", a glossy and stylish film, Saran has tried hard to regain his touch but the end result is no different from his earlier films.
Saran, in his pursuit to make a hit movie, has relied on the actors and what they are best at -- Vinay's casanova act, Kalabhavan Mani's mimic skills, V.M.C. Haneefa's spontaneous reactions and Santhanam's spoofs -- and they have all been used well.
But the surprise element is Kajal Agarwal, who manages to combine good looks with a gritty performance. The young actress almost carries the otherwise dull first half on her shoulders alone.
Rajan Vasudev (Kalabhavan Mani) is a top jet-setting businessman. His son Udhay Vasudev (Vinay) stays in Chennai with his friend Madhan (Yuva) and leads a luxurious life. Fearing his business rivals, Rajan is always protective about his son and appoints security guards from abroad for his safety.
One day, Udhay comes across Eswari (Kajal Agarwal), a student. But he meets with an accident following a callous act of Eswari and forces her to work in his house and do domestic chores to compensate the loss he sustained in the mishap.
His friend Madhan develops a soft corner for Eswari and later so does Udhay. Both the friends set out to solve the issue with Eswari when tragedy strikes. Rajan's business rivals hire a hitman and try to bump off Udhay. But he escapes and Madhan gets killed instead.
Many surprises await Udhay in the next couple of days. He is thrown out of his house, his rivals are behind him and a clueless Udhay runs from pillar to post. Eventually he manages to meet Rajan only to know the truth -- a shocking revelation about his identity. And Udhay, who has become a pawn in Rajan's gamble, is on the cross roads.
The rest of the movie deals with how Udhay, motivated by Eswari, teaches Rajan a lesson. In the company of his friends (Haneefa and Santhanam), he embarks on a mission and eventually emerges victorious.
The film is stylish from the word go. Saran has managed to provide an unexpected twist in the second half but fails to make it engrossing. The pre-interval portion is filled with nonsensical sequences. Had Saran provided a few interesting sequences that form the premise for the more serious things to come, the movie would have been engaging.
The second half is much better but lacks the vibrancy needed for a cat and mouse game. As a result, the film ends up as a stylish and spectacular fare that lacks genuine elements to have audiences glued to their seats.
Cinematographer Karun's soft lens sets the tone from the first frame. Due credit should be given to Colonial Cousins (Hariharan and Leslie) for their music. Their tunes strike a chord with the audience, especially the title song. S Ramakrishnan's dialogue are cool and trendy.
Vinay has played his part well. He is casual and his transformation in the second-half is good. The trio of Kalabhavan Mani, Haneefa and Santhanam deliver well.
Saran has tried hard to make an all-out entertainer but he hasn't succeeded as the script goes wayward in the first half and turns unconvincing in the second. A stylish yet dull fare.

The Journey of the Film :
It was interesting and enjoyable journey for the Cast, Crew & the Production team for this film. The team was put together in the month of Oct`08. The pre-production work lasted fo r6 months, which included day-wise planning for the shooting schedule.
Since the 1st day of shoot which commenced on the 11th March till the last day of the final schedule, we have had a very memorable journey. All in all we wrapped up the entire film`s shoot within a span of 60 days.
The most adventurous part was when we had to shoot the film in a number of locations in Tamil Nadu, from Chennai, to Chengleput, Virudhachalam, Pollachi, Theni, Udamalpet, Palani, OOty, Kodaikanal, Sengottai, Madurai, Tanjore and a few other locations before wrapping up the shoot at Chennai`s famous beaches.
It was a fantastic teamwork by the entire Crew, which ensured the timely completion of the film, with no compromise on the quality of visuals and production, despite the long journey.
Music of the Film – Major Highlight of KK
The Music of the Hindi original, Jab We Met, was a roaring hit and is played regularly even after two years in all the TV channels and radio stations. The challenge to the team was to re-create the magic by bringing out some outstanding tracks so that they can be converted visually in the film also beautifully.
After much discussion we decided on “Melody King” Vidyasagar, who had shown keen interest to do the music for this film, as he loved the original and wanted to show his mantle by giving the music for the Tamil version. He is without doubt one of Tamil industry`s most versatile Music Directors.
The 6 songs are extremely unique and everyone who has listened to it has been enthralled by its melody and high quality of music. Enthused by such a response, Moser Baer Entertainment has decided to released the music in its own label in order to market it better and ensure wider reach of this wonderful music album.
The lyrics were penned by Na Muthukumar, Yuga Bharathi and Kaargi and each one of them so soothing and interesting to listen to. The singers were chosen carefully by Vidyasagar to ensure quality songs. From Hariharan to Udit Narayan to Suresh Wadker to Rahul nambiar to Thippu & Lavanya, all have done justice to the songs.
Kanden Kadhalai`s music is sure to live in the hearts of the people
The Lead Pair & their Involvement:
The biggest contribution to the successful completion of the film came from Bharath & Tamannah, who despite being busy in three projects each, have shown total involveme3nt in the project right from the day one. Their involvement in the dialogues, screenplay, costumes, shooting and post production etc., were excellent and ever seen before in films. So much so, both of them have seen the edited version of the film after the first schedule, and have worked out plans individually on how to improvise their performance further, which greatly helped during the shooting.
Both Bharath & Tamannah lived the roles of Shakthi & Anjali and were fully prepared for each of the scenes and dialogues. The Direction team has conducted a screnplay-dailogues workshop for two days before commencing the shooting, which helped them to understand the requirements and be prepared.
It is the first time, in our experience, the lead artiste have shown tremendous involvement in every aspect of the film, which finally shows on the screen. Their excellent on-screen chemistry has made the film a visual beauty to watch
Comedy – Beautifully integrated in the film:
The biggest addition in the film, apart from change in the cultural tone of the film was the comedy scenes by Santhanam, Manobala, Singamuthu, Mayilsamy, Pandu and others. Santhanam has once again proved his mantle in the film how he can bring in great relief to the audience by making them laugh even in serious situations. He played the role of Anjali`s maternal uncle (Mokkai Rasu) and has made everyone laugh even during the shooting. His scenes were totally integrated with the film through a good screenplay and cannot be stated as a separate track by any means. The audience is going to enjoy his comedy scenes as much as they will enjoy the lead pair`s antics and the beautiful songs in the film.
What you can look forward to in Kanden Kadhalai?

The first 30 minutes of the film looks very peppy and interesting and grips you to your seat, before slipping out into a run of the mill usual Kollywood style thriller. The film starts with a skimpy swim suit scene of Model Pooja (Lakshmi Rai) for an ad film shoot. The ad director uses a remote controlled toy helicopter fitted with a mini camera to get top angle shots of Pooja for the ad. But the toy spins out of control and lands on top of a tree.
Later, the ad director Vinod and Pooja are shocked to find that the camera has filmed a murder of the Law Minister of the State (Delhi Ganesh) by his rival (Sampath). Vinod informs the same to Joint Commissioner Kailasam (Thalaivasal Vijay), with out knowing that he is the real culprit in the murder.
After a few minutes Vinod is murdered by the goons of Sampath, who is now a minister and the tape is accidently put into the bag of young girl Divya (Priya Anand) by Anand (Jai) a struggling actor who is staying with his friend Chandru (Santhanam), a television camera man.
At this juncture John (Rahman) a cold-blooded assassin makes his entry and uses Anand and takes him along when he breaks into other peoples flats.
After this point, the film falls flat and travels along the usual route of Kollywood movies with expected twists! As can be predicted, Jai emerges as the real hero onscreen.
Jai has come up with a better performance than expected, although, there are shades of Vijay in his acting, which he can do away with.
Santhanam and Urvashi (as Pirya’s mother) have given a neat performance. Particularly, the hilarious meeting of Santhanam with Urvasi to shoot her ‘Samayal’ programme will be a popular scene hereafter in all TV channels for comedy time!
The climax fight is thrilling, but unbelievable.
There are some loopholes in the film, but in the end, the director has tied up everything well without sacrificing much of the entertainment quotient.
'Etho Seigirai...' is a popular number underYuvan's music and the background score also helps maintain the grip of the movie.
On the whole, Ahmad, the debutant director has done a neat job and has delivered a good entertainment in his very first attempt

The crew of Kandasamy including its hero Vikram and Producer Thanu is in great shock and disappointment. Nearly 30 out of the 120 film rolls that were used for the shooting in the exotic locations of Mexico recently have been found damaged.
Normally for films that are shot abroad, the film rolls are prevented from getting 'scanned' at the airport by the security staff, if the crew provides enough proof to the airport authorities that those film rolls are used ones. It seems that this formality hasn't been followed in this instance.
Director Susi Ganesan and the cameraman Eka are accusing that the airport staffs have 'mishandled' the film rolls. But some of the unit members say that it could be the fault of the unit itself as they were extremely casual in attitude.
'Kalaipuli' Thanu is very upset as all the efforts and crores of money spent in Mexico has been wasted. After realising the importance of those damaged rolls, Thanu gave idea to the director to fly again to Mexico to shooting those scenes in the same locations. But after hearing some of his close friend's idea, he instructed the director to shoot the remaining portions and the climax in Binny mills
An exceptional magnum opus in the career of Vikram! Of course, he has already donned the most stunning roles in his previous films, but this one is unparalleled for he has crooned commendably for 4 tracks in the album. With Devi Sri Prasad scoring music for this film, the album has 8 tracks with different genres. Cinesnacks brings you the exclusive music review of Kandasamy.

1. Kandasamy Theme – Rita, Susi Ganeshan – The signature song had already hit the masses much prior to film’s shooting. The full version depicts the theme and characterization of the superhero Kandasamy who’s indeed the contemporary Robin Hood. Looks like it would appear in background score or else with the montages of superhero grabbing wealth from riches and distributing to poor sections.

2. Allegro – The most speculative song shot for the film indeed. Don’t presume this to be just an item number with sizzling Mumaith Khan on screens. The song has been shot extensively in a bus speeding with 70Kmph. The song has been tuned with the Arabic style and the singer’s voice is mind-bogglingly sensuous.

3. Meow Meow – Vikram – Priya Hemesh – It’s typically Vikram-fangled song with the beats going much similar to his Dhool’s ‘Kappa Kilangae’. The lyrical lines are catchy for the young masses and would be a sensational hit once on the screens.

4. Kandasamy (DSP Version) – Kalyan, Sagar – This is Devi Sri Prasad’s cut of work as he loves scoring DSP for the best songs. Villu had ‘Jalsa’ DSP and this Kandasamy DSP is quite appreciable. Maybe, it would appear during Final Credits.

Wasn't this film announced like
ten zillion years ago? And wasn't it
called McDull Wudang? It doesn't
matter - the film is finally here and
it should provide all the talking

the previous McDull movies so damn
enjoyable. The film opens in Hong Kong

you've seen it already. Bastards.

A double-barreled, hard-boiled homage to the proud legacy of both French and American gangster films, director Jean-Francois Richet’s feverishly-paced two-part biopic Mesrine is, like its subject, just a tad too obsessed with its own importance to ever really achieve lasting greatness. It is, however, exceptionally good on its own terms, a fascinating—if somewhat jarringly constructed—commentary on the amorality of ambition and the thin line separating celebrity from infamy. Crossover appeal among Francophiles and artfilm devotees on the one hand and crime film aficionados on the other could translate into considerable Autumnal coin, depending, of course, on how much marketing muscle can be mustered by the former ThinkFilm crew currently running sales giant Senator’s upstart distribution arm.

A classic case of truth trumping fiction, the story of Jacques Mesrine (pronounced “May-reen”) unspools a bit like Barry Lyndon as re-imagined by Brian De Palma, a restless character study in which an otherwise unremarkable individual, tossed by the tides of fate, emerges unexpectedly as remarkable, but in all the wrong ways. Flashing back (as such films often do), from the moment of his demise to a more linear telling of the major beats of his life, the picture follows Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) from the dog days of military service in war-torn Algeria of the late ’50s back to France where he channels his penchant for brutality into service for a local crime boss (Gérard Depardieu). Soon thereafter he brings home a Spanish wife (Elena Anaya) and begins a family, only to see his illusion of domesticity shattered when a crucial misstep lands him in prison.

Struggling and failing to go straight after his release, Mesrine tumbles back into his old ways, but with a newfound recklessness that verges on the self-destructive. Abandoned by his wife, he takes up with a new lady luck—the nihilistic Jeanne Schneider (Cécile de France) —who is only too eager to play Bonnie to his Clyde. The French media eat it up, as does a public increasingly fascinated by the duo’s shameless bravado. Escaping capture in France, the fugitives eventually take refuge in Quebec where a partnership with militant separatist Jean-Paul Mercier (Roy Dupuis) precipitates a new North American crime spree.

By the time authorities finally catch up with them, Mesrine is in chrysalis. The common thug prison once nearly tamed is no more, displaced by a nascent egomaniac for whom the quest for fame and celebrity have become all-encompassing. A sentence in Canada’s highest security prison is a gift, an opportunity for even greater glory on the way to enduring infamy. What most impresses about Mesrine’s eventual breakout, in fact, is not the meticulousness of the planning or even the fact that it succeeds, but the showmanship with which he and his co-conspirators execute it. From here on out, everything in Mesrine’s life is theatre.

For Richet and co-screenwriter Abdel Raouf Dafri, this is the key transitional moment of the narrative—the very instant when Mesrine, for better or worse, found himself and discovered a sense of purpose. As the second film begins, the ellipsis is jarring—Mesrine is, inexplicably, back in France and again in the headlines, more brazen than ever. Taunting authorities and flaunting his spoils, he behaves as if he were untouchable—and increasingly, the press and the public begin to believe so, too.

Ironically, as Mesrine’s egomania swells, his ability to engage accomplices wanes. The more his antics verge on the absurd and irrational, the less those closest to him—his new lover Sylvia (Ludivine Sagnier) and partner Francois Besse (Mathieu Amalric)—seem to have the stomach for it. The end is nearing, and it will not transpire gracefully.

This isn’t the first time the movies have attempted to tackle the story of Mesrine—but unlike previous documentaries and a rather sloppy 1984 film starring Nicolas Silberg, it is the first one that genuinely captures the essence of the man and the societal schizophrenia that fostered his myth. It’s also a gargantuan leap forward for director Richet, whose most noteworthy previous accomplishment was the mediocre 2005 remake of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13. But like so many of his countrymen past and present, Richet has translated middling Hollywood success into a triumphant homeland return. Dividing the story into two parts is a particularly savvy move, for it enables Richet and Dafri to underline the Faustian impulse at the heart of Mesrine’s tragic trajectory. Unlike Soderbergh’s misbegotten Ché, which seemed to only belabor the point of the first film in the second, Mesrine demands to be seen in two parts precisely because Mesrine’s life transpired in two parts.

This isn’t to suggest that Richet’s direction is flawless—far from it. Through much of the film he is clearly at pains to wrap his arms around the totality of Mesrine’s enormously eventful life, trying desperately to squeeze as much as possible into a film that simply cannot accommodate it. Several sequences in particular are so haphazardly assembled, so lacking in any sense of pacing, thematic cohesion or editorial elegance that they almost bring the film to a grinding halt. But Richet has always been better at minutiae, and it is the minutiae in Mesrine that engenders its very best moments. The staging and execution of his most notorious crimes, his legendary escapes and, in particular, the final hours of his life—the magnificent moment that bookends the movie—are pure cinema.

In a very general sense, it seems clear that Richet means to tip his hat to the likes of Scorsese and Coppola as much as to that revered pater familias of French cinematic gangsterism, Jean-Pierre Melville. But there are other influences here, too— Rififi, Get Carter and even Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America—that suggest a love affair not just with the crime film genre but with the theatricality of crime itself, the very moral ambivalence that lies at the heart of the genre’s dramatic power—and which Mesrine so brilliantly exploited.

All of this would be for naught, of course, if not for Vincent Cassel’s absolutely staggering lead performance, easily the best of his career and quite possibly the best male performance of 2009. Perhaps because Mesrine saw himself as heir to a proud lineage of historic outlaws, Cassel’s performance likewise borrows liberally from such famous screen outlaws as Clyde Barrow, Tony Montana and Jesse James. But the single most crucial touchstone for both Mesrine and Cassel is the 19th Century French rogue whose life Mesrine’s most closely resembled, legendary ne’er-do-well Pierre-François Lacenaire, most famously popularized in such films as Les Enfants du Paradis and the 1990 Daniel Auteuil starrer Lacenaire as well as Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, which he reportedly inspired. Like his equally notorious forbear, Mesrine saw himself as a kind of artist, an orchestrator of chaos, a master of mayhem. Both were uncommon criminals with more aspiration to glory than gain, deluded by misbegotten grandeur, undone by arrogance. Though the film gives more than cursory attention to the lawman who would eventually bring him down—the unmistakably goateed Commissaire Broussard (Oliver Gourmet)—it is only in Mesrine’s mind that their rivalry rises to comic book proportions, the penultimate conceit of a man unable to comprehend that attaining the highest rung has brought him to the end of his rope.

All other technical contributions are beyond reproach—Robert Ganz’ sizzling, energetic photography, Virginie Montel’s costuming and Emile Ghigo’s superior production design all seamlessly orchestrated to create a flawless sense of time and place as the picture bullies its way through two of the most eventful, tumultuous decades in French history.

If Richet’s magnificently flawed opus gains any traction with American audiences—few of whom have likely ever heard of Mesrine—it will be thanks to the sheer energy he pours into the effort. Though far from perfect, its intermittent flirtation with perfection is a joy to behold, a testimony to the kind of risk-taking that has long separated the best European films from Hollywood’s stock and trade. That alone should make Mesrine a must-see.

Ovrviews And Reviews

Halloween 2 picks up right where the original finished. Jamie lee Curtis, once again, plays as Laurie, the sister of the homicidal Michael Myers, played by Tony Moran. It starts with her hiding with 2 kids she was babysitting with Michael trying to kill her.

It then shows a series of people getting killed in his attempts to murder his sister. But true to style, the ending is left open and the fact that there are more in the Halloween series, you know that he’ll be back

Picture and sound quality is good, but the audio is in mono, so a good setup will make the sound seem a lot better than it actually is. The main disappointment is the music is the same as used in the first film.
Michael Myers is still at large and no less dangerous than ever. After a failed reunion to reach his baby sister at their old home, Laurie Strode is immediately taken to a hospital to be treated by the wounds that had been afflicted by her brother a few hours ago. However, Michael isn't too far off and will continue his murdering 'Halloween' rampage until he gets his sister all to himself.
It is that time of year again, and Michael Myers has returned home to sleepy Haddonfield, Ill., to take care of some unfinished family business. Unleashing a trail of terror, Myers will stop at nothing to bring closure to the secrets of his twisted past. But, the town's got an unlikely new hero, if they can only stay alive long enough to stop the unstoppable.
Picking up right where the first film left off, Laurie is taken to the hospital after supposedly killing the man who was responsible for the deaths of several people in the town of Haddonfield, Illinois. However, her stay at Haddonfield General becomes very brief when a very much alive Michael appears once more, brutally murdering everyone in the hospital to find his sister. Michael disappears, and Laurie survives the infamous Halloween massacre, but is still haunted by it years later. Laurie struggles to come to terms with her dark past, or at least forget it. But the supposedly dead Michael Myers has other plans, and as the anniversary of his massacre approaches, he returns to Haddonfield once more, with a family reunion planned that Laurie will never forget.

While the publication of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring in 1962 has been cited by many as the dawn of the environmental movement, the celebration of the first Earth Day in 1970 demonstrated to many that the concern over pollution, overpopulation, and the abuse of our natural resources was no longer the task of a handful of scientists but something that had caught the attention of people all around the world. Filmmaker Robert Stone offers a historic look at the events leading up to the initial Earth Day event (and what has and hasn't happened to protect the planet since then) in the documentary Earth Days. Stone offers a thumbnail history of the early days of the environmental movement, profiles several of the movers and shakers behind the initial Earth Day event (including Stuart Brand, Rusty Schweickart, Stewart Udall, and Paul Ehrlich), and compares what politicians have promised to do about the environment since 1970 to what has actually taken place. Earth Days received its world premiereat the 2009 Sundance Film Festival

Jason Schwartzman and Ben Stiller star in a comedy co-scripted by Jacob Koskoff and director Todd Louiso

Marc Pease, who is ten years out of high school, still lives in the past when he was the star in the high school's musicals. During the course of one day, as his former teacher/mentor oversees the opening night of another show, Pease finally exorcises his demons and realizes there's more to life than Broadway artistry.

On Tuesday, August 4th, Love HKFilm.com's webmaster got on the MTR and someone asked him, "Hey, when are you going to update your site?" The lesson: when people on the MTR ask you to update your site, you damn well better do it. This is a true story, really.
This update features a review of Overheard, plus a bunch of PanAsia reviews by people who can actually write.
Next time: We'll review something. We're making this up as we go.
The film is a visual feast, full of colorful costumes, fancy effects, and outrageous pageantry, but it would all be for naught without an engaging plot (not to mention solid performances from its lead and supporting actors – Mindee Ong in particular). The characters in 881 don’t just have issues; they’ve got an entire subscription. When her “secret” Getai performances become front page news, Big Papaya finds herself kicked to the curb by her strongly disapproving mother, a woman who just might have some secrets of her own. Little Papaya’s health is deteriorating rapidly, so much so that she tries to keep it a secret from her loved ones. Guan Yin can’t say a single word, but in many respects, he’s the character who’s got the most to say – in particular, about his feelings for both Papaya sisters. Even the blowsy Auntie Ying is dealing with some unresolved tension with her twin sister, the Goddess of Getai.
In the opening salvo of this review, I wrote at length about films with bad tonal shifts. 881 changes its tone frequently – so much so that it might initially throw off a non-Singaporean viewer. But ultimately, these shifts never sink the film. For instance, the movie starts out with Guan Yin, a character strongly reminiscent of Takeshi Kaneshiro’s in Fallen Angels. The heavy usage of voiceover narration – as well as the accompanying onscreen images – seems to be at once an emulation and a parody of one of Wong Kar-Wai’s cinematic hallmarks. The film then shifts into some low comedy involving vigorous Hokkien wordplay, before shifting gears once more with the outrageous fantasy of a goddess with superpowers. And yet it’s all held together by the emotional through line of its two heroines

The movie started with a young woman playing the cello and switching to another scene wherein you can see a woman inside the hospital fighting for her life. This story is about a lady professor who’s blessed of having a great family and loving husband but the only thing is she’s got an autistic daughter whom she love so much other than that everything is perfect. But all these change when during her birthday she received a text message saying “are you happy now? You should be!” and then bizarre things started to happen she almost figure out in accident and then she finds a cassette tape which she tried to get rid but couldn’t and then things got worse when she bought her autistic daughter a cello. Then a series of bizarre events took place one after another where secrets of a distant past starts to unfold and the truth is revealed.
I personally like cello because it doesn’t show ghosts attacking people all it did was show herself and it was them who did the killing. The twist of the story was really amazing. How one lies can actually become a reality for someone who tried so hard to hide her past and actually live to think that the lies were actually true. In the end we all find out that once the person is dead every evil thing she did when she was alive will come back and torment her over and over and over again.
This movie also shows how greed can actually corrupt people’s mind making them do the unthinkable such as sacrificing a friend’s life just to satisfy her greed and how our love over a particular member of the family can actually make us not think about the other family member’s welfare and would do anything to cover up a gruesome crime.
I find this movie interesting and I will definitely recommend this to my friends. I like the ending of the story and how she paid the crime she committed. I must say this is the first Asian movie I have seen where bad people are actually punished for what they did and get what they deserve.

“Tactical Unit – Partners” is the latest and apparently final entry in the new Johnnie To produced “PTU” series. The film was directed by Lawrence Lau, who also helmed the second in the series, “
The film finds the PTU squads, led as ever by Sam (Simon Yam) and May (Maggie Shiu) on alert as word spreads than an Indian crime boss called Black Molly has returned to Hong Kong and is recruiting assassins. Velu, one of his top men, who has just been released from prison and is trying to go straight, is dismayed to learn that his brother Sonu has joined the gang in his absence. As the PTU closes in on the criminals, Velu discovers that his brother has taken on the job of assassinating Chief Inspector Chan, pushing him into conflict with both the police and his former fellows.
As with “Besieged City” and several of his other films, “Tactical Unit – Partners” sees director Lau exploring social and political concerns, in this case the racism and discrimination faced by Indians, Filipinos and Nepalese in Hong Kong. The film wins points for tackling such a potentially touchy subject, and although it does overdo the whole ‘we all bleed red’ platitude, it does make some pretty harsh and searching statements about prejudice. As such, the film is as much a piece of social conscience cinema as it is a thriller, and is both engaging and rather depressingly realistic.
In each of the series one of the PTU tends to get more screen time, and the film sees Maggie Shiu getting her turn with a subplot revolving around her considering marriage, despite the fact that her prospective husband wants her to leave the force rather than to apply for promotion. At the same time, she also gets involved with helping her Filipino maid track down her illegal immigrant cousin who has stolen all of her money, an investigation which quite neatly brings her into contact with Velu and which helps to bring the film’s various narrative strands together. Shiu is on great form, and it is good to see her finally getting a larger role, having long been one of the more interesting characters of the series.
The rest of the film is concerned with the nephew of Chief Inspector Chan joining the PTU and finding it hard to fit in, not least since he keeps making mistakes and resolutely tries to do everything by the book. Although a little unnecessary, this subplot also works well, mainly as it gives another chance for Lau to portray the police as being flawed, though essentially decent human beings, and he again explores the notion that the job requires them to be problem solvers in the service of the people, rather than simply busting crooks. Through this, he throws in a number of difficult and interesting moral situations, all of which hinge upon ideas of duty versus judgement. As with the other films in the series, this makes for far more substance than the average police thriller, and adds a welcome air of gritty realism. The film’s focus is primarily on human drama, though there are a few brutal beatings and the inevitable violent shootout finale. Lau manages to maintain an air of tension throughout, with there being a grim sense of threat hanging over the proceedings. This fits well with his themes, and the viewer is pulled into the shoes of both the police and the unfortunate Velu.
It’s this moral depth which really sets “Tactical Unit – Partners”, and indeed the other new “PTU” films apart, and which makes them so gripping. Both entertaining and thought provoking, it will be a real shame if it really does prove to be the last in the current run, as the series has set a new standard for humanistic crime drama.

Three would-be Encyclopedia Browns step into the world of grown-up crime in this independent comedy. When they were seven years old, "the Mystery Team" were three kids living in the same neighborhood in Oakdale who played at being precocious pre-teen detectives. With Jason (Donald Glover) as "the Master of Disguise," Duncan (D.C. Pierson) as "the Boy Genius" and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) as "the Strongest Kid In Town," they would spend their afternoons getting to the bottom of such crimes as missing tricycles and stolen pies, charging ten cents (or some fruit roll-ups) for their services. However, while their peers have moved on to more mature pastimes now that they're eighteen years old, Jason Duncan and Charlie are hopeless nerds stuck in pre-adolescence as they prepare to graduate from high school. Convinced all they need to do is prove their crime-busting talents to regain the respect of their peers, the "Mystery Team" step into a new class of detective work when a little girl asks them to find out who killed her parents. The guys are up for the challenge, but it isn't long before dealing with real (and truly dangerous) criminals gets them in hot water. Created by members of the comedy troupe DERRICK, Mystery Team received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival

A parking garage attendant and lifelong New York Giants fan finds his life spinning out of control following an altercation with his favorite football player in this darkly comic drama starring Patton Oswalt. For 35-year-old Staten Island parking garage attendant Paul Aufiero (Oswalt), sports are a religion. Paul still lives with his mother, he's the self-proclaimed "world's biggest New York Giants fan," and he spends most of his spare time calling in to the local sports radio station 760 "The Zone," where he can frequently be heard bickering with his mysterious on-air nemesis Philadelphia Phil (Michael Rapaport), an outspoken Eagles fan. Berated by his family for his obsessive love of sports, Paul retorts that they simply cannot appreciate the responsibility that goes with being the New York Giants' number one fan. One night, Paul and his best friend, Sal (Kevin Corrigan), spot Giants linebacker Quantrell Bishop (Jonathan Hamm) at a local gas station and impulsively follow his SUV to a Manhattan strip club. Once inside, the two friends bask quietly in the presence of football greatness before cautiously approaching their idol. When things don't go as planned and Paul winds up in the hospital, the resulting media frenzy finds him questioning everything he believes in just as his beloved team begins preparing for a late-season showdown with the Eagles. Former Onion scribe and Wrestler screenwriter Robert D. Siegel makes his feature directorial debut with this film, which he also scripted
