Soon, Jack looks up from his miserable musings in surprise at the site of three doors carved into the wood. One door fascinates him beyond his ability to resist opening it, for painted on the woody door — a beautiful Christmas tree. Jack opens the door and is met with a flurry of unfamiliar white and fluffy snow as he stumbles into the strangely bright and cheerful Christmas Town. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Awed by all he has discovered in this wondrous new land, Jack determines to try being the king of Christmas instead of the Halloween King. Kids may be scared or unsettled by the appearance of the Halloween Town inhabitants, by Oogie Boogie and his treatment of Santa, and by a macabre but sweet doll girl named Sally and the way her creator, a mad scientist named Dr. Finklestein, treats her. In addition, some of the music and the dark backgrounds and settings make parts of the movie seem scarier. The Story :
The House of the Devil is a 2009 horror film written, directed, and edited by Ti West. College student Samantha Hughes takes on a babysitting job in a remote mansion in order to make the down payment on a one bedroom apartment she has had her eye on. The pay is good, but after Samantha is taken to the house by her friend, Megan, she realizes that something isn't quite right. The old couple who live in the house, Mr. and Mrs. Ulman, confess that they in fact do not have any children, and it isn't long before Samantha realizes that she is trapped. As alunar eclipse darkens the night sky, her employers carry out a horrific ritual with Samantha at the center.
The House of the Devil Hollywood Movie Review
Much like this review, The House of the Devil is a love-letter to the awesomeness that is the unsure, hot chick. I’m not the first writer to suggest that the horror film—particularly the Survival Girl niche—can serve as the ultimate, if culturally-maligned, platform for young guys to reveal and bask in the myriad strengths, vulnerabilities, and attractiveness of the female; and really what is ’s Kill Bill if not the genre’s archetype Survival Girl marching into a kung-pow spaghetti Western fantasia? And his Death Proof but a botched head-on fetish collision with the genre’s idea that audiences should adore a female star(s) and then flinch as she faces death (fulfilled in Inglourious Basterds) or worse? Why the need to bring Tarantino up at all in my review? Well, Tarantino brought many of these genre notions to the aughts’ zeitgeist and to academia, and quite loudly so. He also treats his female characters with the care and attention, unlike so many Hollywood genre films, that Ti West exhibits here with The House of the Devil.
The film is a good combination of tried and true scary gimmicks. The use of the devil worship robes with the black hoods makes you feel at home, reassures you that this is, indeed, a horror film. The photography is almost entirely at night or in dark interior spaces benefitting the dark nature of the horror awaiting Samantha. The day shots are few but are shot against a marvelous grey sky that foreshadows the hopelessness of poor Sam’s situation. She is in a bad way and things are going to get worse and the bleakness of the atmosphere underscores her lack of options. She has been chosen for this assignment and there is no playing hooky.

Turning Green Hollywood Movie Review
In Turning Green; available in Los Angeles and New York theaters October 30th from New Films International, a film set in 1970s Ireland, James Powers (Donal Gallery) is a 16-year-old American teen who has been stuck in Ireland for six years after his mother died. He is force to live his three Irish aunts in a life that is dull and depressing
James has been making a few bucks doing parlor tricks, but realizes it will take forever at that rate to save enough money to return to America. He thinks he has found his great break when he gets a job as a “collector” for Bill the Bookie (Alessandro Nivola). Unlike Bill the Breaker (Timothy Hutton), James uses his relationship skills to collect on gambling debts for his boss. Still, James finds himself underpaid and undervalued as Bill tells him there are plenty of other boys who want his job. James finally gets his break when he is sent to London to stay with another aunt so he can get a physical exam (his aunts think he has stomach issues because he spends a lot of time in the bathroom “pleasuring” himself). While there, he discovers pornography, something apparently not readily available in his part of 1970s Ireland.
James makes a bad decision to hold out on Bill, which results in his friend Tom (Colm Meaney) getting beaten, and James facing a two week deadline to repay. Using his entrepreneurial skills, James decides to be the local porn dealer and he has his supplier in London ship him boxes, and then crates, of magazines, which he sells for more than double the cost. All goes well until the Bills become aware of the competition and are none to happy.
Turning Green is a surprisingly captivating and cleverly presented film from new writer/director team Michael Aimette and John G. Hofmann. Great supporting stars like Nivola, Hutton, and Meaney add plenty of value to this story, but it is the great presence and enthusiastic talent of new star Donal Gallery that helps Turning Green succeed.
Due to some of the prominent sexual themes, Turning Green is not for younger kids or teens, despite that fact it has not yet been rated by the MPAA. Aside from this potential setback, the film itself offers a great story of one young man’s dream for something bigger and his intuition and drive to get it in the face of serious threats and obstacles.
An American-Irish lad’s efforts to leave Ireland circa 1979 is the springboard for some tart comedy and uneven drama in “Turning Green.” Pic is notable on two counts: As one of the few runners-up in a Project Greenlight contest to actually get made, and as a film that feels thoroughly Irish yet is authored by young indie Yanks. With topline thesps Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Hutton and Colm Meaney as strong support for impressive Irish newcomer Donal Gallery, take will earn support for modest theatrical play and good cable jaunts. Gallery’s jaded James undercuts picture postcard views of the Emerald Isle with caustic voice-over comments that conclude that the place is basically “a shitty little island.”

If you are really thirsty and you drink a beer, you have to close your eyes, look to the heavens, ooh and ah, fall to your knees, and declare out loud how damn GOOD it tastes, all the while talking to yourself. You know, like in a beer commercial.
The bad news is, director Toya Sato has escaped from that parallel universe into ours, and brought this clunking, tawdry, disjointed insult to the proud tradition of Japanese cinema with him.
The story, such as it is, is that Kaiji has a huge gambling debt and his life is going nowhere. That leads him to becoming the plaything of a misanthropic multi-billionaire building a nuclear shelter using slave labour and with a penchant for life-and-death gambling games.
If film is stories told by pictures, and the Japanese are a non-verbal culture, could someone please tell me why there is so much TALKING in this film? Kaiji crosses a narrow bridge 200 meters in the air. He looks behind to see that his friend has fallen. The audience can see he has fallen. But Kaiji tells us: "He has fallen." Endo watches a five-card game. The players play three cards, and each play is a draw. They have two cards left.
We can see this, but somehow we get to hear Endo's thoughts, which tell us: "After three cards played it is a draw. It is down to the last two cards." Who exactly is this insipid narration for? Is there a retarded baboon wearing earplugs and a blindfold sitting at the back of the theatre that Sato felt the need to accommodate? I have given only two examples, but the whole film is like this. The most glaringly obvious action is either replayed, or explained verbosely by one character to another.

True stories rarely contain a historic mystery, a courtroom drama, a political murder, and a family saga, but all can be found in the contentious story of Rezso Kasztner. In Nazi occupied Hungary, Kasztner, a Jew, dared to negotiate face to face with the architect of the Final Solution, Adolf Eichmann. While the Nazi killing machine was at its peak, Kasztner secured a rescue train for 1684 Jews from Budapest, and bargained for tens of thousands additional lives. It may have been the largest rescue of its kind during the Holocaust, more than were saved by Oskar Schindler. Yet Kasztner was condemned as a traitor in his adopted country of Israel; accused as a collaborator in a trial and verdict that divided a nation and forever stamped him as the “man who sold his soul to the devil.” He was ultimately assassinated by Jewish right wing extremists in Tel Aviv in 1957.

Killing Kasztner: The Jew Who Dealt With Nazis will begin its run at Cinema Village in New York City on October 23, 2009. To an even greater degree than Oskar Schindler, Dr. Israel Kasztner played a key role in saving the lives of well over 1,000 Jews from the Holocaust (1,600 in Kasztner's case; 1,200 in Schindler's). However, a fascinating and deeply sad irony lies buried in the differences between the men's stories: Schindler was a Nazi party member who manipulated the Gestapo to save the said individuals, and he died a veritable hero. Meanwhile, Kasztner was a Jew who bargained with Adolf Eichmann for the salvation of the 1,600 (whom he shuttled off to Switzerland on a train), and was not ultimately laurelled as a hero, but branded a traitor by his own people. Undaunted, her father goes to the highest court in the land to have her declared as a white person - which was widely publicized in the press at the time, during the late '60s - but is unsuccessful. However, later, during Sandra's adolescence, a change inSouth Africa 's racial classification law allows children to be classified as the same race as their parents. Nevertheless, as a teenager, Sandra (Sophie Okonedo) can never relate to white society because of her appearance, and ultimately starts sneaking off to go to the black townships ofSouth Africa to be among those who look more like her.
She falls in love with a black man, Petrus (Tony Kgoroge), much to the dismay of her parents, especially her father Abraham. She elopes with Petrus to Swaziland, and her father has them arrested and sent to prison. After her imprisonment, she refuses to leave Petrus and return home with her parents. Abraham disowns her, and tells her she can never come back, much to the dismay of her mother Sannie.
From this point on, Sandra lives as a black person in the townships of South Africa, with all the challenges associated with it during the apartheid era. However, over the years, she never forgets about her parents, and always secretly hopes for a reunion.
Years later, when she hears about her father's death, she goes on a mission to reunite with her mother, navigating through government bureaucracy to ultimately find her convalescing in a nursing home after a series of strokes. Their reunion is a joyful one, and is a testament to forgiveness and reconciliation.
There are two poignant scenes in Skin. In one scene, Abraham applies skin lightening creme to young Sandra's face. In another, young Sandra overhears her mother and older brother Leon (Hannes Brummer) discussing how Sandra's appearance has caused so many problems. Upon hearing this, Sandra goes into the bathroom, mixes various household cleaning products into a bowl, and applies the concoction to her skin in an attempt to lighten it.
