EXCLUSIVE: Lizzy Caplan Talks The Last Rites of Ransom Pride
September 10th, 2010

Lizzy Caplan recalls taking on the female lead in this action-packed Western ode to Tarantino and Peckinpah

Tiller Russell's action-packed Western The Last Rites of Ransom Pride seemingly shot forth from out of nowhere, quietly amassing a cult audience that has fallen in love with its rich, atmospheric photography and its hearty scenes of violent mayhem. Lizzy Caplan, who rose to fame in Cloverfield and put in stellar work on the short-lived but much loved Starz sitcom Party Down, stars as the film's protagonist, a tough-talking, quick-drawing cowgirl out for revenge.

Its not often that we see a female lead in a Western, and it certainly adds an honest and unique flavor to the adventure that Lizzy's Juliette Flowers embarks upon in The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. With an ensemble cast that also includes Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Scott Speedman, Peter Dinklage, and Jason Priestley, Tiller Russell has set out to please both the country music loving audience as well as cult film enthusiasts.

The movie is set to reach a wider audience this weekend, as it opens tonight, September 10th, at the Laemmle's Sunset 5 with showings at 10 pm and Midnight. And it will continue to play throughout the weekend, with 10 pm and Midnight shows on Saturday, and 10pm shows the rest of the week. There will also be Midnight screenings throughout the country the rest of this month. To see if the film is coming to your town, be sure to check the movie's official Website.

To help celebrate tonight's midnight launch of The Last Rites of Ransom Pride, we caught up with Lizzy Caplan to talk with her about the film, and to find out more about the behind the scenes work that went into making it such a cult hit with genre fans.

Here is our conversation:
This movie sort of jumped out from nowhere. When did you guys make Ransom Pride, and where have you shown it that its accumulated such a strong cult following?

Lizzy Caplan: I don't know exactly when it was made, because I can't tell the difference between years. It wasn't this past summer. I don't think it was the summer before that. It was either two or three summers ago. Which is a great answer to an interview question. We made it in Calgary. They've been editing it, and kicking it around, and trying to decide what to do with it. Now, all of a sudden, it's finally coming out.

We don't get to see too many Westerns. One a year if we're lucky. And this one looks really great for an independent Western. What were the challenges of making this film as interesting and eye-popping as it truly is?

Lizzy Caplan: We were all really excited to be there. Kris Kristofferson was there, which is beyond the coolest thing ever. He had done some Westerns before. We had Dwight Yoakam there. All of these really awesome music guys. Then there was Peter Dinklage, and Jon Foster, and Scott Speedman. Everyone was so over the moon to be able to ride around on horses and shoot guns. Everyday was this weird, sick carnival.

There is such a great energy coming from the entire cast.

Lizzy Caplan: Yeah, our writer/director, Tiller Russell, is the most enthusiastic guy ever. He had a clear vision of what he wanted to do with this film. His excitement was really infectious. Because we were shooting in Calgary, we would try to go to dinner every night together, and talk about what we shot that day, and what was coming up the next day. In Independent film, you have flexibility in terms of what you want to do with your character. I was surprised, because I thought a writer/director would be really precious about what he put on the page. It's kind of cool when you feel that you are being hired for your opinions as well as your appearance on screen. He was really open to playing around with stuff, and hearing our ideas.

You have a pretty unique accent in the film. How did you find that particular tone and cadence in selling Juliette home as such a badass?

Lizzy Caplan: Its funny, because there aren't that many actual lines of dialogue in the film. I haven't seen it since they screened it for us a while ago. But it sounded to me like this gravely, trying to be Clint Eastwood thing. If that comes across at all, that would be awesome!

It almost sounds like you have a bit of that Tennessee twang in there, too...

Lizzy Caplan: There is that. The accent was interesting. Because this girl lived in Mexico. She traveled around. So her accent wasn't going to be a perfect Southern accent. It was meant to be a hybrid of a bunch of things. It's a nomadic Southern accent, I guess? Doesn't that sound like the most pretentious shit ever?

I know you mentioned Clint Eastwood, but when you are narrating the film in the beginning, it really reminds me of the parting Eulogy that Emilio Estevez's Billy the Kid gives at the end of Young Guns. I can hear Emilio's voice in your performance...

Lizzy Caplan: That is probably a coincidence, but I was really obsessed with that movie growing up. Young Guns II. So maybe it was deep in my subconscious.

If you were obsessed with that movie, then I know it wasn't a coincidence. It's hard to shake some of that dialogue weeks after watching it.

Lizzy Caplan: My sister had that poster on her wall growing up.

That poster is actually hanging on the wall in here, too.

Lizzy Caplan: Really? I can imagine that that movie still holds up.

Yes. I saw it not too long ago, and it's still pretty awesome. The second one? I don't think anyone ever talks about the second one, but it is such a good movie.

Lizzy Caplan: I don't even know if I saw the first one.

I want to ask you about your wardrobe choice in this movie. It is also very interesting. It almost has a futuristic vibe to it. This landscape could almost be an apocalyptic Western version of the future. It is very postmodern. Did you guys ever discuss that idea on set?

Lizzy Caplan: We didn't, but I'm sure Tiller Russell, our director, would have a huge boner just to hear you say that. It does take place in a specific year. God, I haven't seen it in so long, but I believe it is 1919. There were cars, but not many people had cars. It did take place in a specific time that actually happened, but...Clearly the wardrobe lent to a much-more futuristic rock and roll vibe. Our wardrobe woman, Wendy Partridge, who lives in Calgary, was amazing. She works in this massive warehouse, and she made all of the costumes. My costume required three people to get it on and off every day. It wasn't the most comfortable, but it was the coolest thing. She made those pant out of nothing. I am really impressed by costume people that can do stuff like that.

I have to say, those pants are kind of awesome.

Lizzy Caplan: The pants were rad. The belt that I am wearing is like a horse check plate. I wear it as a sort-of chastity belt, I guess. Every one's costume was ridiculous. That helps you get into a weird mindset that is necessary to get into if you are walking around on set in a costume like this all the time.

You have a natural beauty, and it doesn't take a lot to make you look astonishingly gorgeous. Is it a harder process to come in and get grimed up for a role like this, where you are covered in dirt, and your hair is greasy, and you look like you haven't taken a shower for a while?

Lizzy Caplan: No, it's a harder process to look good. (Laughs) But everyone on set was filthy and covered in blood. A lot. They start off doing nice make-up, but by the end they are just throwing dirt and old shampoo on you. They slather you with a bunch of shit.

In talking about the cast, one of the people you didn't mention was W. Earl Brown, who was of course in one of the greatest Westerns of the last twenty years, Deadwood. Was he able to offer any insight into this world of filmmaking?

Lizzy Caplan: I didn't have too much stuff with him, really. But I am sure that he talked to our director a ton about his experiences on that. His wardrobe is the most straight forward in the movie. It almost looks like it came right out of Deadwood. I don't know if they did that on purpose, but it was pretty cool. Our Western is pretty out there. He probably had to take everything he knows from that show and tweak it a bit.

So that guy just rolls around in his Deadwood outfit no matter where he is?

Lizzy Caplan: (Laughs) Yeah, probably.

He was on Justified, and he was wearing something similar. And that show takes place in modern day Kentucky.

Lizzy Caplan: That is so amazing. It's cool. They make fewer and fewer Westerns nowadays. Its not like it was back in the 60s. That's all they were making, it seems like.

This is something you don't ever see...Only two come to my mind, the Clint Eastwood movie Two Mules for Sister Sarah and Sharon Stone in The Quick and the Dead...Where we have a female protagonist in a Western. How exciting was that for you, to join that very small club?

Lizzy Caplan: Exactly, that is why it was such an attractive role. Usually, in a Western, the girl wears a dress and sits on the porch, waiting for her cowboy or lover to return to her. Some boring shit like that. My favorite kind of set to be on, and movie to make, is when I get to hang out with all the guys. And it gets grimier and grosser. And all the immunities that would either come with a big budget movie, or if I had to look nice all the time, aren't there. We were in Calgary, which is for-real cowboy country. Making this movie, it was mostly me and a bunch of guys. For me, that was a dream come true.

And you seem pretty handy with the weapons. Does that come naturally? Or did you have to go through some training?

Lizzy Caplan: I wish that it came naturally to me. I did a bunch of fight training leading up to the movie with a guy here in Los Angeles. Then Jon Foster and I went to Calgary a couple of weeks early to do horse and gun school. Which was amazing. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in my life. The countryside in Calgary. We would ride horses every day. We would shoot our old guns at hay bails. It was awesome.

Can anybody go to horse and gun school?

Lizzy Caplan: They set it up for us, but I'm sure that anybody could go. We went to a ranch that had about a hundred horses. And they train everybody there for Westerns. Right before we got there they shot The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. They shoot most Westerns up in that area.

I think Calgary is one of the reasons the film looks so good...

Lizzy Caplan: It is so beautiful. And they have really good steaks in Calgary. It is so awesome.

The Last Rites of Ransom Pride was released September 10th, 2010 and stars Lizzy Caplan, Scott Speedman, Cote de Pablo, Jason Priestley, Peter Dinklage, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Jon Foster. The film is directed by Tiller Russell.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers is looking to direct Odd Thomas, according to Production Weekly.

The movie would be an adaptation of author Dean R. Koontz' Odd Thomas novel series, which he started in 2003. There have been four books (Odd Thomas, Forever Odd, Brother Odd and Odd Hours) and two graphic novels in the series. The books center on a character who can see the dead and, although he cannot speak with them, tries to help them solve their problems.

We reported last month that Stephen Sommers is returning to direct the Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel. It isn't clear yet when the sequel would go into production, or if this Odd Thomas project would go before the Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel.

Get Him to the Greek arrives on DVD and Blu-ray September 28th, and to help launch the release,

EXCLUSIVE: Stretch Armstrong and The Muppets Details from Nick Stoller
September 10th, 2010

Get Him to the Greek arrives on DVD and Blu-ray September 28th, and to help launch the release, director Nick Stoller stopped by to chat about his latest comedy. He was also nice enough to take a few moments out of his time to talk about some of his other upcoming projects including The Muppets and the superhero flick Stretch Armstrong, which is based on the popular Hasbro doll from the late 70s and stars Taylor Lautner in the lead role. We learned quite a bit about this upcoming project from Nick, who was in the midst of working on the Stretch Armstrong screenplay as we chatted with him.

Here is our conversation:
I see that you're writing Stretch Armstrong. Is this something that is actually going to happen soon?

Nick Stoller: I have (the script) open on my computer right now. Rob Letterman is directing. And Taylor Lautner is starring. It's a big, action-type of superhero movie. It is outside of my genre wheelhouse, but it is really exciting to work on it. There are certainly comedic elements to it. But it is very much a superhero movie.

I'm assuming that you are around my age, and that you had a Stretch Armstrong doll when you were a kid?

Nick Stoller: No, I didn't have a Stretch Armstrong. But I had a friend that did.

This probably sounds stupid, but it so clearly sticks out in my mind. When I see the words Stretch Armstrong, I think of the rubber on this doll getting cracked and dirty, and this jelly oozing out of him. It was devastating when my mom threw the disgusting thing in the trash. That, too me, is Stretch Armstrong. Will we see that referenced in the film?

Nick Stoller: Yeah. I don't know if we'll see a mom throwing him in the trash. But I think that is a common thing that people have said to me. When you are a kid, you want to see how far Stretch Armstrong can stretch. I think part of this ties into Hasbro launching a new line of toys. This is not a toy that kids are familiar with now. So they are re-launching a whole line of crazy stretch toys to go along with the movie. Its fun to create a whole universe. There was nothing to the back-story, so it's exciting.

And you say its going to be a superhero movie?

Nick Stoller: Yeah. It's going to be a total superhero movie. There is nothing to base the story on. There were never any comic books, or anything. We've gotten to have complete creative freedom in terms of creating this universe. Which is kind of daunting, because Marvel has sixty or seventy years of stories to play with. It's also kind of great, because we're not beholden to anyone. We are not beholden to any stories. We are not beholden to something that started in 1960. We get to create this from the ground up, and make a very current, fun, superhero story.

With the old toys from the late 70s, they did have Stretch Monster, and the two Stretch Octopi, which all had that gross grape jelly in them, as opposed to the Kyro syrup that was in Stretch Armstrong. Are any of them going to be incorporated into the movie?

Nick Stoller: No. It's just Stretch. Stretch is a lot different now than he was in the late 70s.

What sort of nemesis is he going after in this movie if its not the green Stretch Monster?

Nick Stoller: I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say about it. I'm new to the world of not being able to talk about stories. I come from the world of comedy, where you can talk about what ever you want. But Stretch lives in a very grounded, real world. Our inspiration is as much The Dark Knight as it is the Bourne movies. His nemesis is a rogue element. Not to get to into it, but they are rogue soldiers. Those are his nemesis.

For years, DC Comics as tried to get Plastic Man off the ground as a feature film. Did you have to look at those comic books to ensure that you weren't heading down the same road as that iconic character?

Nick Stoller: No. This is quite different from anything else out there. Our fundamental story is a ways away from that. I am not worried about him being too close to Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic from Fantastic Four. It's quite different. It's a lot more grounded in the real world, assuming that you had a guy who could stretch. What would that look like? He's not creating parachutes. It's a much-more grounded look.

You are also co-writing The Muppets. Where is that film in terms of production at this point?

Nick Stoller: That is eight weeks out now. I co-wrote the screenplay with Jason Segel. James Bobin, who co-created Flight of the Conchords, is directing it.

What kind of scene did you guys write for Seth Rogen and Rowlf to star in together?

Nick Stoller: (Laughs) Nothing yet! I know he did a Saturday Night Live skit dressed as Rowlf. But we have not written that scene into the film. Not yet!

You worked with Sean Combs in Get Him To the Greek. He's appearing in the Joaquin Phoenix documentary this weekend called I'm Not Here. There's a lot of speculation about the authenticity of this film. Is it real or is it fake. Having worked with Sean Combs, what is your take on it? Is he acting? Or is this the real him?

Nick Stoller: I haven't seen the documentary. So I have no idea. I just now read a description about what that documentary is. Whether it is a mockumentary or a documentary? I couldn't tell you. I didn't even realize he was in that. Sean Combs has so many things going on, I was surprised that he was even in that movie.

Sean Combs certainly steals the show in Get Him to the Greek. Do you think we'll see him return with Aldos Snow in a third film? And if so, is Jonah Hill going to play a completely different character yet again?

Nick Stoller: We haven't talked about it yet. But never say never. And I think you are right. If we did do another Aldos Snow film, we would definitely have to have a third character for Jonah Hill to play.

Get Him to the Greek was released June 4th, 2010 and stars Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Tyler McKinney, Zoe Salmon, Lino Facioli, Lars Ulrich, Mario López, Pink. The film is directed by Nick Stoller.

The Muppets comes to theaters December 25th, 2011 and stars Jason Segel. The film is directed by James Bobin.

Stretch Armstrong comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Taylor Lautner. The film is directed by Rob Letterman.

'40-Year-Old Virgin' actor: I stabbed girlfriend by mistake
By Dahvi Shira, PEOPLE.com
September 10, 2010 -- Updated 1505 GMT (2305 HKT)

(PEOPLE.com) -- The "40-Year-Old Virgin" actor Shelley Malil testified Thursday he stabbed his girlfriend 20 times when he wrongly thought that she was somebody else going after him in the dark.

"I'm sorry," Malil, 45, said in a Vista, California, courtroom. "I had no idea. I saw the pictures (of her wounds) for the first time, I was stunned. When I look at those pictures, I still can't believe the knife I was holding was responsible for all those injuries."

Taking the stand in his own defense, the actor insisted he never intended to kill or hurt Kendra Beebe, 38, at her San Diego County house one night in August 2008. But then "chaos" broke out, some of which he says he still can't remember clearly.

PEOPLE.com: Actor arrested in attempted-murder probe

Malil, who played one of Steve Carell's electronics store coworkers in the movie, pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary. He could get 21 years to life in prison if convicted.

Malil told the jury that when he arrived at Beebe's house, he found her sipping wine with her pal David Maldonado. Malil says he felt threatened because he thought Maldonado was about to come after him.

"I heard the chair behind me backing up," he recalls. "I reach for the knife. ... I grab half the handle and he's pulling my arm, and I'm pulling away from him."

PEOPLE.com: Tom Brady walks away unhurt after car collision

After a tumble, Malil says he realized Maldonado no longer had the knife. "I assume he's going for something else," he says. "I follow him to the kitchen."

But on the way, Malil says Maldonado was headed to his car. "I'm almost positive this guy's got a gun and coming after me," he says. "I come around the corner. It's eerily quiet. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I get hit from the back on the side of the head. It felt like cold granite countertop."

That's when Malil, still carrying a knife at this point, started slashing out in defense in the dark. "It was going crazy," he says. "It seemed like it was going for a minute."

It wasn't until hearing Beebe shout, "Call 911!" that Malil realized she was the one he was stabbing.

PEOPLE.com: Britney dismisses accuser as a fame seeker

"That's the first time I look and see it's Kendra I'm fighting with," he says.

The trial will continue with cross-examination Monday, and closing statements are expected Tuesday.

Majority of Lebanese who cannot afford a generator to keep things such as refrigerators running during daily power cuts,

Under daily blackouts, Lebanese wait to see the light
Updated at: 1103 PST, Thursday, September 09, 2010

BEIRUT: Zeinab's refrigerator is more like a box than an ice box: the 29-year-old Lebanese civil servant cannot store meat, dairy products or fruits and vegetables for more than a day.

Like the majority of Lebanese who cannot afford a generator to keep things such as refrigerators running during daily power cuts, which in some neighbourhoods can last most of the day, the rhythm of Zeinab's life is set by the hours she has electricity.

"At night during the summer I don't manage to sleep very much because I don't have air conditioning and I suffocate from the heat," she said.

Even if she had air conditioning it wouldn't do much good in her home in a southern Beirut suburb where power cuts sometimes last 14 hours a day.

Pregnant, she sometimes waits hours for the power to return so she can take the elevator up to her sixth-floor flat.

"I don't understand why, after 20 years since the (1975-1990) civil war, we still don't have electricity 24 hours a day," said interior designer Liliane Khalifa.

"That is beyond my understanding," says the 46-year-old in frustration.

"When I was small, I did my chores by candlelight. Today, I am married, I have children, and we still need a generator to survive 10-hour power cuts," lamented the resident of Jounieh, a Christian city north of the capital.

But unlike Zeinab, who cannot afford the 50- to 100-dollar monthly fee to hook up to a generator, Khalifa is lucky.

In Lebanon, the haves and have-nots are defined by whether they have the financial means to hook up to a generator -- a common practice throughout the country.

The whole nation seemingly runs on generators which, for a fee, power whole buildings or neighbourhoods.

Joseph Akiki, owner of a ladies' hair salon, spends more than 600 dollars a month on four separate electricity bills: two for state-provider Electricite du Liban, one for a subscription fee to a generator for his salon, and another for his home.

"It's my biggest expense," he said.

The have-nots live every other evening by candlelight.

Frustrations over power cuts exploded last month in demonstrations, mainly in the impoverished north of the country and the capital's southern suburbs.

Electricity is a constant concern for the Beirut government, which allocates the third largest slice of its budget, after debt servicing and salaries, to power supply.

This summer, said Energy and Water Minister Gibran Bassil, the government was able to supply 1,700 megawatts of electricity, while demand was closer to 2,500 megawatts.

"It's a miracle that we are still able to keep producing electricity," said Bassil, whose country's infrastructure was also badly hit by the 2006 war between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

"Successive governments did not invest by building, for example, new power stations to meet demand," which has steadily risen, said Violette Balaa, head of the economy section at An-Nahar newspaper.

She said that in large part blame for the electricity woes lay with "mafia in every area that refuse any reform of the sector."

Most of the owners of large generators work hand-in-hand with politicians, for whom the current situation is lucrative and who prefer not to find solutions, she said.

In addition, in many poor areas where the government does not have full authority, electricity is often stolen by residents who connect illegally to an electricity pole, without a metre.

But when it comes to not paying the bills, politicians apparently figure among the biggest offenders.

Last June, Bassil announced that the total for unpaid water and power bills by officials and politicians over the years amounted to eight million dollars (6.5 million euros).

He warned it would now be lights out for anyone owing more than 3,300 dollars. "Yes, we have cut off power from some influential figures' households," the minister said.

After Electricite du Liban sent out its warning slips, only one in four politicians, officials and top businessmen stepped up to the plate and paid their dues.

"Some continue to argue that they do not owe that much, and then there are those who for some reason feel they just don't have to pay," Bassil added.

"Not only do they not pay their domestic bills but also those of companies or factories that they own," according to Balaa, the journalist.

The government has finally approved a reform programme to guarantee 24-hour electricity by 2015, cutting economic losses due to power cuts, estimated at 4.5 billion dollars a year.
"That's a pipedream," scoffed Balaa.

Clinton slams Quran burning
Updated at: 0722 PST, Wednesday, September 08, 2010

WASHINGTON: US diplomatic chief Hillary Clinton welcomed late on Tuesday condemnation in the United States of a Florida pastor's plans to burn hundreds of Qurans on the anniversary of 9/11.

'I am heartened by the clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful act that has come from American religious leaders from all faiths... as well as secular US leaders and opinion makers,' Mrs. Clinton said as she hosted an iftar meal at the State Department to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Mrs. Clinton's spokesman Philip Crowley earlier denounced Florida pastor Terry Jones's plans to mark Saturday's ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks by burning Qurans as 'provocative' and 'un-American.' 'We would like to see more Americans stand up and say that this is inconsistent with our American values,' he added.

'The potential act of burning a Quran... is contrary to our values, contrary to how civil society has emerged in the country.' The small Florida church's planned open-air burning ceremony triggered a wave of concern and condemnation from military leaders that the incendiary move could spark outrage around the Islamic world and endanger the lives of US soldiers.

France's Kouchner to marry: close source
Updated at: 1359 PST, Thursday, September 09, 2010

PARIS: France's 70-year-old foreign minister, former humanitarian champion Bernard Kouchner, is to marry his long-term companion in Rome, a source close to the political veteran said Wednesday.

"He has that project," the source said, when asked whether Kouchner plans to wed 66-year-old Christine Ockrent, who is his girlfriend of many years and a well-known journalist and broadcaster in her own right.

The source was speaking on condition of anonymity to reveal details of the minister's private life, and refused to reveal the date of the ceremony.

President Nicolas Sarkozy named Kouchner foreign minister in 2007, but before that he was best known as the outspoken founder of medical aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

He began his public career on the left, as a fellow traveller of the French Communist party, later served as a minister in several centre-left Socialist governments and now sits on Sarkozy's right-wing cabinet.

In 1999 he became the head of the United Nations mission in Kosovo, acting as the de facto governor of the breakaway Serbian province after NATO air strikes drove out Yugoslav forces accused of carrying out atrocities.

Throughout his political journey, and despite his prickly temperament, Kouchner has remained one of France's most popular figures, until recently regularly polling as one of voters' most admired politicians.

Now his star begun to slip, as former supporters have been surprised to see the man who began his public life campaigning for Vietnamese "Boat People" refugees serving a president who is deporting Roma Gypsies from France.

Ockrent is a veteran journalist and commentator in print, television and radio and now serves as the head France's state international broadcaster, which oversees RFI radio, and the TV5 Monde and France 24 TV networks.

Rajshree Ojha, the director of the Film , tells correspondent that if the content of a film is good, the rest will fall in place.

Did you assist any director before you made your debut with Chaurahe?
I confess that till date I haven’t assisted any Indian director. I had been an assistant to Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, who, besides being my mentor, had directed Legally Blonde 2. Jonathan was an independent director, who had also made the film Kissing Jessica Stein.

In what way is filmmaking different in India?
Filmmaking, per se, is the same whether in India or abroad. What I feel is lacking here is the will to respect the director. In filmmaking, it is the director’s vision that counts. If you have faith in your director, you should believe 100 % in him or her. All said and done, filmmaking is a collaborative work and actors should stand by the director to churn out a good final product.

Did Anil kapoor interfere with the making of your film as the producer?
I dealt more with Mr Kapoor’s daughter Rhea than Mr Kapoor while making Aisha. I did interact once in a while with Mr Kapoor, who was absolutely non-interfering as a producer. I shot for the film for almost 67 days and Mr Kapoor did not at all crib as the producer.

How did you think of making Aisha?
I wrote the idea of Aisha which is based on the novel Emma and asked Devika to write it. It took me almost four and a half years to launch Aisha. In fact, we took the basic character from the novel and adapted it to suit contemporary India today. To tell you the truth, I was trying to pitch it around by visiting various film production offices till I ultimately managed to get a producer, who had faith in me to launch the film.

Why did you choose to adapt Emma?
Though my earlier film Chaurahe had nothing to do with women per se, Aisha, as the film’s title suggests, is a film about a woman who is trying to be a match-maker, for her friends, who are single. It is a grey story. I had read Emma.

How autobiographical is your film?
I am single, but my film is not at all autobiographical. There are certain biographical situations, since almost every single girl faces them whether it is in India or for that matter abroad. I am of the opinion that every director has to have a strong belief in his project and bring something of him or her to the product that he or she churns out.

Go on!
Aisha is about a girl. In fact, it is about the journey of a girl and about her coming of age. Yet it is not at all a girly-girly film in the real sense of the term. The film has all the elements of fun. In fact, I’d even gone to the extent of stating that a lot of young boys will also be able to relate to the film because they have met girls like Aisha. It is a kind of a universal film which transcends all languages.

It must have been quite a tough task for you to zero in on Abhay Deol for Aisha!
It was quite difficult to get the right boy for the character of Arjun in Aisha. I felt that Abhay is one actor who is quite confident and professional to the core.

How commercial is Aisha when compared to Chaurahe?
The fact that films are being differentiated as art house and mainstream film is what pulls the Indian filmmakers apart. It is only the Friday when a film is released that decides whether the film is good or bad. I feel that a film which flops at the box office is an art film and a film that clicks is a mainstream film. The fact that a film like Tere Bin Laden has clicked at the box office proves that the Indian audiences are now changing. I had made Chaurahe too with the same passion and feeling with which I set out to make Aisha. As far as I am concerned, frankly Aisha also is as commercial as Chaurahe was. I confess that I do not have the sensibility to make pot boilers. I just cannot see myself making an out and out commercial mainstream film, say like De Dhana Dhan or for that matter Do Knot Disturb, though I just love watching them as a viewer.

What next?
I am writing a period piece set in the 60s with the backdrop of various cities in India. Basically, I like to make gypsy kind of films. Chaurahe was also based on different cities of India. I will start looking for stars as well as new faces, once my script is ready, not otherwise. I feel that content has to be the most important aspect of any film. If the content is good, the rest will fall in place. Though Chaurahe was not linear in structure, Aisha is, because the subject demanded it. As a filmmaker, I am willing to experiment because there are various ways of telling a story.

Will Pancharangi break the records of Mungaru Male?
Thursday, September 9, 2010, 13:12 [IST]
By: Shekhar H Hooli

Yogaraj Bhat came to limelight after the release of his movie Mungaru Male (MM) in 2006. Although it had got mixed response from the critics, it was successful in impressing the film goers. The movie had not only garnered Rs 75 crores at the Box Office, but also set a record as the highest grosser in the history of Kannada film industry. After this film, Yogaraj Bhat had tried very hard and come out with another two movies like Gaalipata and Manasaare, but could not break his own record.

After these movies, the director took one complete year to make another wonderful movie that could break the record. Yogaraj's latest movie Pancharangi, starring blue-eyed boy Diganth and cute Nidhi Subbaiah in the leads, seems to have set to stand equal to the charm of MM. Like MM, this movie has got mixed reviews and got good response from the audience. At least 85% percent of audience have gone out of theatre with contented heart. After the first show of the movie, several Kannada TV channels
collected the feedback of the audience, many of them said that they could not get enough of the movie and expressed their desire to watch it again.

Now, the experts in Gandhinagar are keeping their finger crossed about the success of the movie Pancharangi. They are busy comparing it with MM and calculating the merits and demerits of the film. But I strongly feel that the movie will break all records of the Box Office. I think it will do even better than MM and create a new record at the Box Office. The reasons for it are as following:

Firstly, the main highlight of MM was its music. It has seven songs and all of them wowed the listeners. Pancharangi too has seven songs and have started playing their magic. Mano Murthy has composed music for both the films. The only difference between the songs is that all the songs in MM have been shot amidst the nature, whereas a few songs of Pancharangi have been shot using art works. But this does not deffer the songs in catching the attention of the viewers.

Secondly, both the films have a very thin storyline with gripping narration. They are comedy-cum-love stories. The love story has less scope in Pancharangi compared to MM, yet it is more intensive and powerful than MM. If you look at the comedy part, comedy in Pancharangi is more natural than that of MM. At least in the first half of Pancharangi, we don't understand how fast it finishes. As far as dialogues are concerned, the dialogues in MM were comic and punchy, whereas in Pancharangi along with these two things, they are more meaningful, philosophical and talks more of real life.

Thirdly, as for the characterisation, MM has a very less number of characters, whereas Pancharangi has large number. Except Ganesh and Ananth Nag's characters, all other characters were serious in MM, whereas in Pancharangi, almost all the characters are funny and humourous. Each character has a weakness or shortcoming and the comedy arises from their mannerism. I strongly feel that Yogaraj has used comedy to mock at the present generation. Moreover, Pancharangi is a sharp satire on modern life and the director has covered it with humour.

Finally, the technical parts in the Pancharangi are quite similar and even a notch better than that of MM. MM has several beautiful locations, whereas Pancharangi has only two locations like coastal area and a college near Bangalore. But V Thyagarajan has managed to bring that MM charm with his camera work. Art direction and choreography of songs in Pancharangi are far better than MM. When compared to MM, Pancharangi lacks only one aspect that is fight sequences, that might disappoint action lovers.

After calculating all these aspects, I would like to say that Pancharangi will definitely break the record of MM. What do you think of it? Do you agree with me? Justify your stand by giving reasons in the comment box.

Actor Akshay Kumar turns 43 years old today. Wife Twinkle Khanna has planned a surprise Birthday party for him. It is reported that Twinkle has been preparing the guest list and working on organising the party for the last few weeks. She is going to make it a special day for Akshay by inviting all their close friends and family.

Apart from all this, it looks like the birthday gifts for Akshay has already started pouring in before the party could begin. Producer Vipul Shah has decided to give him a beautiful birthday gift by releasing the first look of his forthcoming film Action Replayy. This film stars Aishwarya Bachchan opposite Akshay. The first look ceremony will have a special birthday cake
for the actor.

A look into Akshay's Journey

Akshay was born in Punjab and was raised in Delhi. He completed his schooling from Don Bosco School and continued his studies in Khalsa college. Since childhood he was very much interested in dancing and sports. While in college he got into Martial Arts and learnt it further from Bangkok. While staying in Bangkok he was working as a Chef to earn his living. Then he returned to India and became a Martial arts teacher. He came across a student who was a photographer. The student gave Akshay a modelling assignment and requested him to pose for him. This is how he got exposed to camera and got into the modelling world.

He first made his Bollywood debut in 1991 with the film Saugandh, which went unnoticed. Akshay became the most wanted actor after his film Khiladi. Though this film categorized him to the action hero sphere, Akshay never hesitated in trying new things. He has equally been successful in his romantic, comic and a villian roles also.

We at Oneindia wish this star Many Many Happy returns of the day and all the luck for the year ahead.

Green Lantern 2 and The Flash Updates from Marc Guggenheim
September 9th, 2010

The highly-anticipated DC comic book adaptation Green Lantern is currently in post-production, and there is already talk of Green Lantern 2. Newsarama recently spoke with Green Lantern writer Marc Guggenheim about the planned sequel, and the rumors that a third Green Lantern movie is already in development. Here is what Marc Guggenheim had to say:

"I think where that came out of was, when Greg Berlanti originally pitched the movie to Warner Bros., he pitched three movies. So there's always been, and he's said this publicly, that there's always been enough story for a trilogy. The scope of the character and the character's world requires that. But we're really just focusing on the treatment for Green Lantern 2."

We reported back in June that Marc Guggenheim, Greg Berlanti and Michael Green were hired to write the treatments for both Green Lantern 2 and The Flash. Marc Guggenheim revealed to the site that their treatment for The Flash was recently completed, although they haven't started work on the actual script yet:

"I think it's very hard to talk about these characters in a closed-ended, sort of non-sequel way, especially characters like The Flash and Green Lantern, which have such rich, long histories. You can't help but talk about the characters and go, 'Oh, I really want to do the movie where we get to this moment, or that moment.' So you're always talking in terms of sequels, but no, nothing's planned. We haven't even written the script yet for The Flash. It's very much one step at a time for The Flash.
Marc Guggenheim also talked about his visit to the Green Lantern set in New Orleans:

"I went down to New Orleans two months ago to see some of the Green Lantern filming, and I got to see a whole bunch of things in connection with the movie. In all honesty, I was completely blown away. I don't think it dawned on me how huge this movie would be until I went down to New Orleans and really saw everything that I saw. It was incredibly eye-opening. I was really rendered speechless. There's just no way for me to put it to words, just how huge this movie is going to be."

We'll continue to keep you posted with any further details on Green Lantern, Green Lantern 2 and The Flash as soon as we have more information.

Stephen King Wants Twilight Cast for The Dark Tower Trilogy?
September 9th, 2010

It was announced yesterday that Universal Pictures had acquired the franchise rights to Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which is being turned into both a big screen trilogy directed by Ron Howard and a weekly television series. Now, Stephen King has talked with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming feature film, and he expressed his thoughts and concerns about the production, even mentioning that he'd like to see Ron Howard get the cast of Twilight to play main characters Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake in the movie. But is he joking?

Here is what the popular horror author had to say about The Dark Tower:

The Dark Tower is such a dense series. Did you always think it needed more than a single movie or TV show treatment?

Stephen King: I always thought it would take more than a single movie, but I didn't see this solution coming - i.e., several movies and TV series. It was Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman 's idea. Once it was raised, I thought at once it was the solution.

What about Ron Howard and NBC makes them a good fit for the franchise?

Stephen King: When working as a director, Ron is very similar to the way I work as a writer. We both tell honest stories that have (I flatter myself) style and substance but not a lot of show-offy frills.

In a perfect world, who would play Roland? Eddie? Susannah? Jake?

Stephen King: The Twilight cast, of course! Just kidding. I haven't got as far as casting in my thoughts, but when I write about Susannah Dean, I always kind of see Angela Bassett in my mind's eye. Mostly I just want good people in those parts. Ron Howard will find them, I'm sure.

And who would you want to play?

Stephen King: I'd love to be the voice of Blaine the Mono.

There's a lot of blood in the series - how much is the TV series going to be censored? It likely would have been easier to join forces with a network without restrictions, à la HBO, no?

Stephen King: I don't see that as a problem at all! We'll have just enough latitude to make a great series. I've worked in network TV before, and every time I was squeezed a little, it just made me look for creative solutions. Besides, I always like to play in the biggest auditorium available!
