Against the Current English Hollywood Film. The film Directed by Peter Callahan.

Plot:
A grieving man sets out to swim the length of the Hudson River to mark the fifth anniversary of his wifes death.

Against the Current English Film Synopsis;
Against the Current is the story of Paul Thompson, (Joseph Fiennes), a man who sets out to swim the entire length of the Hudson River — all 150 miles, from Troy, NY to Manhattan. Joining Paul is his best friend since childhood, Jeff (Justin Kirk) and Liz (Elizabeth Reaser), a teacher with nothing better to do during her summer break. Together, the trio embarks upon an unusual road trip, a three-week adventure down the Hudson.
Adamant that they reach New York City by August 28, Paul keeps everyone on a tight schedule. Rain or shine, he swims, while his friends ride alongside in a boat, stopping each night to camp along the river's edge. However, the journey soon takes a troubling turn when Paul reveals that there is more to this adventure than Jeff and Liz originally thought. Paul, who is still grieving a tragic loss, feels that after he completes this swim he will truly have nothing left to live for.
Realizing that the only way to help Paul is to continue with the swim, Jeff and Liz agree to stay on. And so with each passing stroke, a gallows humor settles over the three as they find themselves debating the finer points of jelly donuts, sex, and death. As the jokes and one-liners mix with deeper exchanges, the journey down river becomes a battle not only to save a friend, but to also discover what it is they ultimately seek inside themselves.
Both tragic and funny, Against the Current is a compelling and uncompromising exploration of sorrow and loss, one's right to determine one's own fate, and the limits and responsibilities of friendship.

Against the Current Review :
This under-the-radar film about a guy who swims a good length of the Hudson River in NY State down to NYC, is one of those warm indie films that deftly balances drama with some humor. No surprise that it snagged actors like Joseph Fiennes, Elizabeth Reaser (adding another fine performance to her growing career since her debut in the great "SWEET LAND"), Justin Kirk, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Mary Tyler Moore in a notable supporting role.
The reason behind his swim I won't divulge here, but it makes for some powerful moments. As he swims, his 2 friends go along with him in a guide boat, and they come to shore for breaks, which leads to some great moments in the film. It's not all on the water. But when it is, it's riveting. As a viewer, I felt like I was swimming right there with him at times.
And the swimming scenes show off the wonderful Hudson Valley, and Joseph Fiennes looks like he really...um...took the plunge. That's really him in the water. Kudos to the filmmakers who must've been on the river an awful lot. (And to the camera people!) Hopefully this film finds its audience in other film festivals and in a future release.
I had the chance to see this at AFI festival in Dallas. The movie is beautifully shot, and some of the scenes along the Hudson are gorgeous. The story line is intriguing, and unfolds as the swimmer makes his way through the challenge of swimming the Hudson. As the first reviewer said, he has a tragic story that compels him to take on this feat. I won't divulge the details, but as his story comes out, it makes you think hard about some of life's issues. Definitely worth seeing.

The dialog is also well-written. Although this is not a comedy, the dialog is often quite funny. Fiennes may have gorgeous eyes, but I thought Justin Kirk's character really stood out in the film.

Chloe Hollywood Film Review :

Thrilling erotic adventure with some of the best acting we've seen out of Amanda Seyfreid to date! The direction lulls you in to a wild ride as more of the plot is revealed. MUST SEE. It was so enjoyable to see Toronto finally shot AS TORONTO. It is also noteworthy that Liam Neeson courageously filmed a portion of this movie after the tragic death of his wife. With wild twists and turns. I saw this at the Toronto film festival and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised by the result. Also, keep an eye out for the up and coming actor Max Theriot. He's going to be someone to look out for. Julianne Moore also rings in a great acting performance with her great control of a woman who's life begins to spiral out of control.
Saw CHLOE last night. I love all of Atom Egoyan's films and this was no exception. We were warned going in that the movie was going to be sexually graphic. While this movie was highly erotic it was done extremely tastefully. Other directors would have gone more and cheapened it. Toward the end I was afraid we were heading for another Fatal Attraction but fortunately did not go that way.

This was Julianne Moore's movie, no doubt, and I am rather surprised at the amount of nudity she showed. And Amanda Seyfried was HOT! Liam Neeson is almost a footnote in this film but he shows what a professional he is to do a film of this type after his family tragedy. I think this was the most erotic movie Egoyan's done since Exotica. Highly recommended.

Greenberg English Hollywood Film. The film Directed by Noah Baumbach.

Plot:

A New Yorker moves to Los Angeles in order to figure out his life while he housesits for his brother, and he soon sparks with his brother's assistant.

Greenberg English Film Synopsis
Meet Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller): a dysfunctional 40-year-old at a crossroads in his life. Roger wants to “do nothing” for a while, so he agrees to housesit for his younger and more successful brother, giving him a free place to stay in L.A. While in town, he tries to reconnect with his old friends and band mates but times have changed, and old friends aren’t necessarily still best friends. Greenberg starts spending time with his brother’s personal assistant Florence (Great Gerwig), an aspiring singer and herself something of a lost soul too. During a series of embarrassingly awkward romantic encounters, we sense that perhaps even someone as irascible as Greenberg may have found somebody who is prepared to appreciate him for himself - if he would only stop critiquing Florence’s techniques in bed. Over the course of several weeks, we watch an uncertain and wonderfully vulnerable courtship play out, and learn how funny, and terribly unpredictable, love in the modern world can be.
Greenberg brings actor Ben Stiller together with Academy Award-nominated writer/director Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale") to tell the funny and moving tale of Roger Greenberg. Focus Features releases Greenberg in select cities on March 26th, 2010.

Roger Greenberg [Ben Stiller], single, fortyish and at a crossroads in his life, finds himself in Los Angeles, house-sitting for six weeks for his more successful/married-with-children brother. In search of a place to restart his life, Greenberg tries to reconnect with old friends including his former bandmate Ivan [Rhys Ifans]. But old friends aren't necessarily still best friends, and Greenberg soon finds himself spending more and more time with his brother's personal assistant Florence [Greta Gerwig], an aspiring singer and also something of a lost soul. Despite his best attempts not to be drawn in, Greenberg and Florence manage to forge a connection, and Greenberg realizes he may at last have found a reason to be happy.

Greenberg Hollywood Movie Review :
Because of Ben Stiller's titular character in Noah Baumbach's Greenberg, I have to reassess how important identifying with or sympathizing with the hero is in my criticism. Simply put, Roger Greenberg is not a likable chap: For instance, he's sour about almost everything, to the extent that he has multiple complaint letters going to Starbucks, American Airlines, and like establishments.
Having been released recently from treatment for depression, Greenberg is doing nothing but visiting his brother's elegant home in Los Angeles while his brother is conducting business in Vietnam. Florence (Greta Gerwig), his brother's assistant, pretty and fifteen-years younger, presents Roger with the challenge of ignoring his attraction to her and thus feeding his misanthropy, or embracing her and perhaps a better view of humanity.
You guessed it: He fights the attraction. I did not find anything to like about Roger (except his brutal honesty), and not even at his most eloquent during a party where coke, of the granular kind, loosens his tongue to give a cultural tongue-lashing to partying 20 somethings around him.More successful, however, is his tentative relationship with his old band mate, Ivan (Rhys Ifans), whose marital difficulties deflect him from hitting Greenberg head on about his losing a record contract for their band. Ivan's care for Greenberg, or should I say patience, is a touching part of a film where most characters would like to avoid him. Greenberg is another neurotic for Baumbach's canon and another for Stiller's career. They both can be legitimately neurotic about this film.

Plot:
Physical attractions appear to be the obvious explanation for two people to become a pair. But are they really the reflection of something sublime, everlasting or dare we say, spiritual? Do relationships start in the bedroom or in the heart? In this male love story, the bliss described by Joseph Campbell and sages throughout the millennia is a practical option for finding happiness.

Just Say Love English Film Synopsis:
A stage play adapted into a feature-length film that explores whether physical attractions appear to be the obvious explanation for two people to become a pair. But are they really the reflection of something sublime, everlasting or dare we say, spiritual? Do relationships start in the bedroom or in the heart? In this male love story, the bliss described by Joseph Campbell and sages throughout the millennia is a practical option for finding happiness. As the camera delves into the characters' minds and actions, we find fulfillment on both a physical and spiritual level.

Reviews:
For those plagued by the summer's humid denseness, Bailiwick Repertory's Pride Series offers the perfect antidote with their enjoyably breezy production of David Mauriello's Just Say Love. This light, philosophically charged romance between two unlikely companions is both agreeably cute and mildly heady, offering weary observers a charming evening of theater.
Computer geek/wannabe artist Guy is approached by preternaturally horny construction worker Doug in the park one afternoon. Working with Plato's theory that we all are perfect as solitary beings until the right match arrives, Guy tries to resist his attraction to the straight-identifying Doug. Soon, though, the two are meeting for afternoon trysts focused primarily on fulfilling Doug's sexual needs. Of course, emotional entanglements ensue and as Doug's female lover gives birth to their child, changes occur and life-altering decisions must be made.
Mauriello's script is ripe with slice of life humor and he nicely builds the joy and awkwardness of the maturing relationship between Guy and Doug. He reaches beyond the clich?s of the sensitive gay man and the macho brute to establish two understandably human characters. A couple of monologues placed towards the end of the show alter his seamless flow of one and one encounters. The notion presented in the first?that God created the world from an orgasm?is also unique, if un-tantalizing. He falters slightly with some too coincidentally cute moments, and some change of season interludes could have been accomplished more efficiently, yet these incidents do not harm the overall cozy strength of the show.
As Guy, Todd Aiello delivers a believable, sincere and comically conflicted individual. He injects strength of bearing into circumstances that could have been construed as needlessly pathetic. In the more difficult role of Doug, Nathan Cann emerges as a performer of honorable instinct and credibility. Aside from a few performance-heavy moments, he gives a true heart and baffled emotionality to what could have turned into a stock portrayal. He is a joy to watch and makes your heart yearn for his slightly animalistic and eventual societal norm-rejecting anti-hero. Granted, the most subversive element of this shiny production is the frequent use of Lou Reed's classic "How Do You Think it Feels." But, even old Lou, who has settled into domestic tranquility and his role as the Grandfather of Punk, would probably find much to enjoy in the quirkily charming Just Say Love.

Blue Beard (Barbe Bleue) English Hollywood Film. The film Directed by Catherine Breillat.

Plot

An adaptation of the classic tale of a wealthy aristocrat with a blue beard.

Barbe Bleue French Film Synopsis:
Based on Charles Perrault's grisly fairytale, "Bluebeard" tells the story of young Marie-Catherine, child bride to an aristocratic ogre with a reputation for murdering his wives. A classic tale, a favorite of good little French girls since the 1950s. Princess Marie-Catherine must employ all her cunning to outwit her husband and escape the most unpleasant of fates.

Barbe Bleue France Movie Review :
Director Cathérine Breillat folds two fairy tales into another, one of her own design and the classic narrative theme Barbe Bleue (King Blue-beard). I guess she deliberately renders the performances and sets artificial and hollow. This is for example clearly indicated in the tower stairs scene, where the same part of the spiral stairs is shown over and over again to give the impression of a high tower but there are distinctive parts showing it's always the same. As if this wasn't already clear enough, at one point she needlessly lets the image flip to show its cut. I interpret this as a cryptic reflection of narrative tradition where she blends the image of the girl devouring King Blue beard into a new image of the girl's courage and fearless endeavor. Hence Lola Creton is the only one who seems to be allowed to give a glowing performance and so she does.
A difficult film, but worth a watch if anything of the above made sense to you or you know and like Breillat's unconventional work.
Infused with a sumptuous elegance, Catherine Breillat's eerie retelling of the Charles Perrault fairytale Bluebeard is very sensual and highly stylized while adhering to an almost literary interpretation of the story. Shown at the Vancouver Film Festival, the film operates on parallel levels, both involving two sisters. In the first story, two young sisters play in the attic of their home in France in the present time. Catherine, who according to Breillat's autobiographical material, represents the director, plays power games with her older but more withdrawn sister Marie-Anne by tormenting her with readings of the classic horror story "Bluebeard".
While young Catherine is reading the story, the drama plays out on the screen in a setting that looks like the 16th century. Another pair of sisters Anne (Daphne Baiwir) and Marie-Catherine (Lola Créton) (note the similarity in names) receive sad news at a convent from a coldly unfeeling Mother Superior that their father was killed while trying to save a little girl. Without means to continue at their private school, the girls are unceremoniously thrown out. On the way home, they pass Bluebeard's Castle and comment on the local aristocrat who, rumor has it, married many wives who strangely disappeared.

Dream Boy English Hollywood Film. The film Directed by James Bolton.

Plot:

Chronicles the relationship between two gay teenagers in the rural south in the late 70's.Unfortunately, in act four the plot takes a turn for the worse, morphs into southern Gothic supernatural thriller, and enacts classic homophobia: gay love can't be show without being punished horribly, in this case with rape and murder. Topping this off with a ghostly eternal love ending is the kind of red dye number 2 maraschino cherry only a teen could possibly swallow -- and it still wouldn't be good for him.
I encourage those video savants out there to edit this down to a festive mix of the romance, love, and bootie scenes, preferably as background for parties and gay bars.

Dream Boy English Film Synopsis:
Shy teenager Nathan and his family have moved from one town to another trying to escape the domestic disintegration within their own home. Roy and his family live a quiet life on a farm. When Nathan moves in next door to charismatic Roy, the boys strike up a friendship as high school study partners. Their strong emotional bond soon takes a natural turn toward physical passion, a secret they must hide from those around them in the backwoods rural community. A haunting and mythical tale of first love, DREAM BOY is adapted from Jim Grimsley's heartbreaking novel. An Official Selection in the Berlin International Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival.

Dream Boy Hollywood Movie Review :

.I began watching the film with mild interest and very quickly was drawn into the quiet intensity of the film. One must avoid any discussion of specific plot elements, which would ultimately spoil the experience of the film. It is NOT as some have called it, a "Brokeback Mountain" about teenagers. It is different. It is unique. It is beautiful photographed, sensitively told and atmospheric. I was especially impressed with the performances of Stephan Bender as Nathan and Max Roeg as Roy. While I had no idea what the exact outcome of the film would be, there is a "foreboding" that overshadows the entire story; You get clues along the way that "something is wrong." But the final 20 minutes or so will probably really surprise you. There is much more going on here that can be easily summarized in a user review or with a catch line that describes the plot's formula. I think it's the type of film that will provoke a great deal of discussion and it deserved to be released on DVD.
If only I were a teen today, I'd be all over this mess of a gay romance fantasy thriller. The two leads are to-die-for cute, and the tons of romantic eyes, passionate looks, making out, and simulated sex almost make up for their somewhat stiff acting and the stilted direction. It's a queer Tiger-beat delight! With some social service messages about repressed, incestuous hypocritical Christian fundamentalist fathers, homophobic teen friends (all this stems, of course, from repressed homosexual desires and jealousy), until the last act it seems a wholesome, sexy fun, more thrilling for it's gay romantic idyll, than believability or gripping

The Last Song Synopsis:
Based on best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks’ (“A Walk to Remember,” “The Notebook”) latest novel, "The Last Song" is set in a small Southern beach town where an estranged father (Greg Kinnear) gets a chance to spend the summer with his reluctant teenaged daughter (Miley Cyrus), who'd rather be home in New York. He tries to reconnect with her through the only thing they have in common—music—in a story of family, friendship, secrets and salvation, along with first loves and second chances.

The Last Song Movie Reviews:
Miley Cyrus makes her non-Hannah Montana film debut in The Last Song, a heart-warming drama about life, love and growing up.
My expectations of this film were quite low, but if you can handle all the cheesy warm fuzzy moments then you might actually enjoy it!
Based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name (written for the film -- and Sparks also penned hits including The Notebook and Mandy Moore's A Walk To Remember), The Last Song tells the story of Veronica 'Ronnie' Miller (Miley Cyrus), a mixed up, rebellious teenager sent against her will to stay with her Dad (played by Greg Kinnear) for the summer.
Ronnie meets Will (Liam Hemsworth) and despite her best efforts to push him away, they end up falling in love. Drama ensues when Ronnie finds out Will kept a secret about her father from her but like most romantic dramas the couple have a happy ending, despite other tragic events.
The film is a bit of a tear-jerker and being Miley's attempt at a role that will break her away from her Disney Hannah Montana persona be prepared to see Miley steal, swear, scream, flirt AND get her pash on.
