Natalie Portman (Hebrew: נטלי פורטמן‎, born Natalie Hershlag; June 9, 1981) is an Israeli-American actress. Her first role came in the 1994 French action film Léon (known in the United States as The Professional). During the 1990s, Portman had major roles in films like Beautiful Girls and Anywhere but Here, before being cast for the role as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In 1999, she enrolled at Harvard University to study psychology while she was working on the Star Wars films. She completed her bachelor's degree in 2003.

In 2001, Portman opened in New York City's Public Theater production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, alongside Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In 2005, Portman received a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actress in the drama Closer. She starred in V for Vendetta (2006), having her head shaved, and learning to speak with an English accent in preparation for the role. She played leading roles in the historical dramas Goya's Ghosts and The Other Boleyn Girl. In May 2008, she served as the youngest member of the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival jury. Portman's directorial debut, Eve, opened the 65th Venice International Film Festival's shorts competition in 2008.

Early life
Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel. Her father, Avner Hershlag, is an Israeli doctor specializing in fertility and reproduction (reproductive endocrinology). Her mother, Shelley Stevens, is an American homemaker who now works as her agent. Portman's maternal ancestors were Jews from Austria and Russia, and her paternal ancestors were Jews who immigrated to Israel from Poland and Romania. Her paternal grandfather's parents died in Auschwitz, and her Romanian-born great-grandmother was a spy for the British during World War II.

Portman's parents met at a Jewish student center at Ohio State University where her mother was selling tickets. They corresponded after her father returned to Israel, and were married when her mother visited a few years later. In 1984, when Portman was three years old, the family moved to the United States, where her father received his medical training. The family first lived in Washington, D.C., where Portman attended Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, but relocated to Connecticut in 1988, and then settled permanently in Long Island, New York, in 1990. Portman has said that although she "really love[s] the States... my heart's in Jerusalem. That's where I feel at home." She is an only child and very close to her parents, who are often seen with her at her film premieres.

Ballet thriller Black Swan to Open Venice film festival

Natalie Portman plays a ballerina in the film

Psychological thriller Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, will open this year's Venice film festival, organisers have said.

The film, from US director Darren Aronofsky, also features Vincent Cassel and Winona Ryder.

It centres on the rivalry between two dancers at a cutthroat ballet company in New York.

Aronofsky won Venice's top prize, the Golden Lion, in 2008 with The Wrestler, which starred Mickey Rourke.

"The cast and crew of Black Swan are both excited and humbled by the selection committee's invitation," said Aronofsky.

"It is an honour to walk the great red carpet on the Lido, and we are excited to premiere our film to the wonderful audiences in Venice," he said in a statement.

The Venice festival runs from 1-11 September. The full line-up will be unveiled later this month.

US director Quentin Tarantino is heading this year's jury.

Putin joins expelled Russian agents in song

July 25, 2010 --

(CNN) -- During a recent meeting, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin provided encouragement and sang patriotic songs with 10 agents who were expelled from the United States this month after they were accused of spying, state media reported.
"I am sure they will work in decent places. I am sure they will have an interesting and bright life," Putin told reporters Saturday as he described his meeting with the group, state media RIA-Novosti said.
Putin, a former KGB officer, said that betrayal allowed the spy network to be uncovered, adding that he knew the names of those responsible, RIA-Novosti reported.
Betrayers "always end up badly taking to drink or drugs, in a gutter," he said, according to the news agency.
The 10 Russian agents pleaded guilty in the United States earlier this month for failing to register as foreign agents and were ordered out of the country.
In Washington, Attorney General Eric Holder said none of the 10 had passed classified information and therefore none had been charged with espionage. But U.S. officials said the group had been under observation by federal authorities for more than a decade.
White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told PBS' "NewsHour" that although the 10 agents didn't plead guilty to being spies, they "were clearly caught in the business of spying."
After the pleas, the agents were ordered out of the country and the United States and Russia completed an elaborately choreographed spy swap, using chartered planes to exchange the 10 agents convicted in the U.S. with four Russians who had been imprisoned for alleged contact with Western intelligence agencies.
Putin told reporters Saturday that the life of a spy is difficult.
"Imagine - they have to master a foreign language as your own, think and speak it, fulfill tasks in the interests of their motherland for many years without counting on diplomatic immunity," he said.

Number of dead, injured at German Music Festival rises. The Love Parade will now forever be overshadowed by the tragic deaths.

(CNN) -- The organizer of a German music festival announced Sunday that the Love Parade has been disbanded after more than 19 people were killed in a stampede.
Rainer Schaller said the festival, which began in 1989, has been canceled "out of respect for the victims, their families and friends ... The Love Parade has always been a peaceful event and a joyous celebration, which will now forever be overshadowed by the tragic deaths yesterday."

The death toll from the stampede at the festival is at 19, police in Duisburg, Germany, said Sunday. Duisburg's Senior Mayor Adolf Sauerland said 340 festival goers were injured Saturday when chaos broke out at the "Love Parade 2010." Police have said as many as 400 were injured.
The deadly crush happened in an underpass between the main event site and the expansion area. Witnesses told CNN affiliate NTV that people pushed into the tunnel from both sides until it was dangerously overcrowded. The panic began as festival-goers began to lose consciousness as they were crushed against the walls and each other.
Detlef von Schmeling, police president of Duisburg, said 16 of the dead have been identified and did not die in the tunnel, but at the entrance ramp. The victims included four foreigners from the Netherlands, Australia, Italy and China. The remaining three victims have yet to be identified, von Schmeling said.
The senior mayor said the city had put in place a "solid security plan" and must now begin an investigation into why the incident occurred.
"The Love Parade was supposed to be a peaceful and joyful festival for young people from the region and beyond," Sauerland said. "Now this event must unfortunately be considered to be one of the great tragedies in the contemporary history of the city. I am deeply shaken."
Carsten Lueb of NTV said some 1.4 million people showed up at the popular festival, which features dozens of DJs spinning techno music for hours.
Organizers expected only 700,000 to 800,000 attendees, so they opened an additional event site to accommodate more people.
After the panic, a line of emergency vehicles, including helicopters, could be seen parked on the highway leading to the festival site, carrying away people injured in the crush. The festival itself, however, went on. Police were afraid that ending the music altogether could cause further unrest among the massive crowd.
Witnesses also told NTV that police were warned at least an hour before the incident that the underpass was becoming dangerously crowded. NTV reported that there were 1,400 police officers on hand to monitor the event.
The festival was supposed to take place from 2 p.m. to midnight (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET). By the evening, the entrance and adjacent roadway remained closed. Thousands inside the venue continued dancing, but many could be seen leaving the area.
