Early last weekend it looked like the heist film Takers was going to steal the number two position, but by Monday morning the Robert Rodriguez movie had cut its way to second place while the Drew Barrymore comedy barely cracked the top five. Now with the highly anticipated fourth chapter of the popular Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife opening this weekend it was almost inevitable that we would be crowning a new box office champ.

Debuting at number one this week is in fact the long awaited fourth chapter of the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife, based on the popular video game. Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) returns in the lead role and is accompanied by a talented cast of actors, which includes Ali Larter (Heroes), Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Boris Kodjoe (Surrogates) and Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy). The movie made $8,648 on each of its 3,203 screens for a decent opening weekend total of $27.7 million, which is almost half of its initial $60 million production budget.

Moving up one place from last week to number two is the urban heist film Takers. The movie boasts an all-star cast, which includes Paul Walker (Fast & Furious), Idris Elba(The Losers), Matt Dillon (Armored), Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith), Michael Ealy (Miracle at St. Anna), Jay Hernandez (Quarantine), Chris Brown (Stomp the Yard), T.I. (American Gangster), and Zoe Saldana (Avatar). While the movie dropped almost 43.9% from last week and was seen in 15 less theaters, it earned roughly $2,784 on each of its 2,191 screens for a weekend total of $6.1 million. Now in just three weeks the movie has made over $48 million earning back its entire $32 million production cost and then some.

Falling two places from its number one debut last week to number three this week is the international espionage thriller starring Oscar winner George Clooney (Syriana), entitled The American. While the movie dropped almost 55.3% from last week, it was actually added in ten theaters and earned roughly $2,081 on each of its 2,833 screens for a weekend total of $5.8 million. Now in just two weeks the movie has made over $26 million earning back its entire $20 million production budget.

Falling two places from its debut last week to number four is the long-awaited motion picture from visionary director Robert Rodriguez called Machete, which is based on the short film that was featured in his and Quentin Tarantino's movie Grindhouse. The film stars PEwKBywCY6r6Aw||Danny Trejo} (Heat) in the title role and also features a colorful cast of accomplished actors including Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar), Jeff Fahey (Lost), Cheech Marin (The Perfect Game), Don Johnson (Miami Vice), Steven Seagal (Half Past Dead), Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls) and Oscar winner Robert De Niro (Raging Bull). While the movie dropped an astonishing 63.2% from last week, it was actually added in eight theaters and earned roughly $1,568 on each of its 2,678 screens for a weekend total of $4.2 million. Now in two weeks the movie has made about $20.8 million earning back its entire $20 million production budget.

Rounding off the top five for the second week in a row is the romantic comedy about long distance relationships called Going the Distance. The movie boasts an all-star cast of comedic actors including Drew Barrymore (The Wedding Singer), Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard), Christina Applegate (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore), Ron Livingston (Office Space), Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Rob Riggle (The Hangover) and Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live). While the movie dropped almost 44.3% from last week, it earned roughly $1,266 on each of its 3,030 screens for a weekend total of $3.8 million. Now in two weeks of release the movie has only made around $14 million, which is not even close to earning back its $32 million production budget.

Doing well in limited release this week is the romantic comedy The Romantics starring Katie Holmes (Batman Begins), Anna Paquin (True Blood), Josh Duhamel (Transformers), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring) and Candice Bergen (Gandhi). The movie debuted on only two screens but earned $22,200 on each for a weekend total of $44,400.

Next week will see the opening of four highly anticipated new films in wide release and three in limited release.

September 11th, 2010

Producer Gareth Unwin and writer David Seidler, who collaborated on this November's Tom Hooper drama The King's Speech, are set to work together once again on the upcoming biopic The Lady Who Went Too Far.

David Seidler will be adapting Kirsten Ellis's biography of Lady Hester Stanhope entitled "Star of the Morning" for the drama, which centers on the life and times of the famous world traveler. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the tale will contain elements of a political thriller as Stanhope traverses through Europe and the Middle East in search of herself.

David Seidler recently talked with The Hollywood Reporter about the project, and stated about the woman he will be chronicling, "She was a female Lawrence of Arabia, a hundred years before Lawrence. She came to exactly the same conclusion that Lawrence did, that we had no place in the Middle East and should keep away politically."

Residents allowed to return to homes after California gas line fire
By the CNN Wire Staff September 12, 2010 -- Updated 1645 GMT (0045 HKT)

San Bruno, California (CNN) -- Three days after a massive gas line fire decimated part of a California neighborhood, residents on Sunday were being allowed to survey the damage firsthand.

San Bruno, California, City Manager Connie Jackson said that the first group of residents would be allowed to come back to their homes Sunday afternoon. Residents would be processed and escorted to their homes in groups to ensure safety and privacy, she said.

But families who had their houses completely destroyed by the fire will not be able to go back yet, Jackson added.

The number of people missing in the aftermath of the fire has grown to six, San Bruno Police Chief Neil Telford said.

The official death toll from the blaze stands at four, according to a statement released by the city of San Bruno late Saturday.

Authorities had found additional remains that were undergoing forensic testing, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said. The testing would clarify how many victims' remains were found, he said.

The fire started Thursday after a gas transmission line ruptured in the suburban San Francisco town.

The blaze destroyed 37 homes and damaged eight, Matthew Bettenhausen, California Emergency Management Agency secretary, has said. Cars also melted from the blaze.

On Saturday, California Sen. Barbara Boxer demanded answers about why the gas transmission line ruptured.

Accompanied by state and federal officials, Boxer toured blocks of the charred neighborhood that now resemble a war zone.

"Many questions must be answered by all of us whose job it is to protect our people," Boxer said. "What was the cause of this blast of course, first and foremost? Were there reports that there were odors escaping from the pipeline? If there were those reports, what actions took place in response to those complaints?"

Residents packed a town hall meeting Saturday seeking answers from public officials about rebuilding and compensation issues.

Maura Guerrero, who lost her home, said she smelled gas coming out of her drain about four months ago and called Pacific Gas and Electric. But once the smell went away, she thought nothing of it.

"I didn't know there was a transfer station under the ground," Guerrero said. "If I had known, maybe it would have clicked."

Some area residents have alleged that there was a smell in the neighborhood at least a week before the blast.

Pacific Gas and Electric President Chris Johns has said the company was scouring phone records and had not found evidence that complaint calls were placed. Nor was there evidence, he said, that utility crews had been in the area Thursday, the day of the blast.

Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado said he has written a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission seeking information on gas pipelines across the state, including their ages, inspection dates and records.

Firefighters were able to fully contain the blaze Friday, but federal and state investigators had not yet determined the cause.

The 30-inch natural gas pipe was installed in 1956, according to National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Christopher Hart.

Hart has said investigators will look closely at the pipe's welding and whether the pipe properly emitted an odor that may indicate a gas leak.

Conflicting reports about the number of people who died in the fire emerged Saturday. Earlier in the day, the city of San Bruno released a statement saying the death toll was seven, citing the police chief. But later the city released a statement saying the death toll remained at four, based on corrected information from the San Mateo County Coroner's office.

Officials have identified several of the dead.

Jacqueline Greig, 44, and her 13-year-old daughter Janessa were killed, San Mateo County Deputy Coroner Michelle Rippy said. A third victim was identified as Jessica Morales, 20.

Another 52 people were injured, including three patients who were taken to the hospital with third-degree burns and four firefighters who suffered from smoke inhalation.

Cigarettes, electricity on the way to trapped miners
By Patrick Oppmann, CNN September 12, 2010 -- Updated 0850 GMT (1650 HKT)

Crews are working on the assembly of the oil drill, which will work on the named "Plan C" to rescue the trapped miners in Chile.

Copiapo, Chile (CNN) -- The miners trapped for more than a month in Chile are getting a light in more ways than one.

The 33 men have received a power line that will allow them to install electric lights in their shelter 2,300 feet underground, mining officials said Saturday.

Officials are also granting the miners' longstanding request for cigarettes. Rescuers are sending down two packs a day to be split between the miners who want to smoke, Chilean Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.

Cigarettes were among the first requests made by some of the miners, but officials have been supplying them with nicotine patches and gum instead. Upgrades made to ventilation in the mine led officials to decide to allow them to smoke, Manalich said.

A new compressor was improving air circulation in the mine, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said, and the addition of electricity will allow the men to have more lighting in the area where they are trapped, helping restore their sleep patterns.

After rescuers reach them, the lights might help the men adjust to daylight, Manalich said. But doctors will still take special precautions to protect the miners' eyes once they reach the surface, he said.

Officials estimate it could take until at least November to free the miners, who have been trapped underground since August 5.

Rescuers are using three drilling methods -- dubbed Plan A, Plan B and Plan C -- in their efforts to reach them.

The men underground have expressed concern over hearing the rescue drills' stopping and starting, Manalich said.

"We explained to them that the drills stop and start, there isn't any big change," Manalich said. "The drills stop for maintenance, they have programmed stoppages and they have stoppages like we are seeing with Plan B."

Plan B, a drill usually used to make water bore holes, has not been drilling after hitting a steel beam in the mine which "completely destroyed" the drill's bit, Manalich said. Workers, he said, were digging the broken bit out and then would replace it but that process could take several days.

On Saturday, more pieces of the Plan C drilling platform arrived at the drilling site. An oil drilling platform the size of a soccer field, the Plan C is expected to drill faster than the other two drills already at work.

Hundreds rally in support of mosque at 9/11 site
Saturday, September 11, 2010, 13:14 [IST]

New York, Sep 11: Though many are against on the proposed mosque near the site of Sep 11, 2001 attack, many are also in support of the agenda as on Friday, Sep 10 about 2,000 people rallied for the stand of fundamental US rights, which is frredom to religion.

"We stand together to rebuff the stereotypes," Susan Lerner, New York director of the rights group Common Cause, told the crowd. "We reject the idea that any neighborhood in our great city is off limits to any particular group."

The rallies broke the taboo against politicizing of 9/11 anniversary and came against the idea of pastor Terry Jones' threat to burn the Koran if the mosque was not moved.

Protesters said that the attempt to prevent islamic culture
near Ground Zero meant equating all Muslims with the terrorists in 9/11.

"The important thing here in New York is that it's not really about Ground Zero it's about the rising tide of Islamophobia. It's a form of racism that is suddenly OK," said Rebecca Vilkomerson, director of Jewish Voices for Peace.

After the 9/11 remembrance ceremonies, the rally will continue in support of mosque in Ground Zero, said the supporter.

Srinagar, Sep 11: The violence in Srinagar on Saturday, Sep 11, Jammu and Kashmir government has blamed Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq for instigating violence on the day of Eid celebration.

However, the Mirwaiz said that he did not incite the mob and claimed that Hurriyat Conference had always "stood for peaceful protests".

AR Rahman disappoints Tamil film lovers
Saturday, September 11, 2010, 11:50 [IST]

It's been 19 years of a stupendous journey and yet A.R. Rahman keeps offering fresh and stunning music. The Madras Mozart’s association with ace filmmakers Mani Ratnam and Shankar has never disappointed his fans. In fact, his recent album Endhiran topped the global charts and even the Hindi version Robot is reportedly doing well at audio market.

The year 2010 has been the most promising year for his fans, as nearly a dozen of his albums have been released. Starting off with Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, he continued striking gold with Ye Maaya Chesavo, Raavan, Raavanan, Villain, Komaram Puli, Enthiran, Robot (Telugu and Hindi versions) that have been prodigiously successful.

His next Hindi albums Jhoota Hi Sahee and Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (the complete film is based on music) will be released by next month. Apart from these films, his multilingual 3D project Sultan – The Warrior starring Superstar Rajinikanth will also be released. Not to forget his Hollywood movie 127 Hours that brings back Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire team together.

However, Tamil film buffs are slightly disappointed as he wouldn’t be scoring music for Shankar’s remake of 3 Idiots due to his prior commitments of International projects and global tour. There have been rumours that Mani Ratnam will be signing Yuvan Shankar Raja to score music for his next film tentatively titled Pookadai.
