Colin Fitz Lives! A Lost Film Back from the Grave
Hollywood movie online English movie online Drama movie Romantic movie online movie Review movie story Fantasy Movie Adventure Movie Action Movie Hollywood Movie Colin Fitz Lives Directed By Robert Bella

All About The Low Budget Movie:

Back in 1997, “Colin Fitz Lives!” was the darling of the Sundance film festival. The low-budget comedy was praised by Robert Ebert and Harry Knowles. It went on to win a slew of film fest awards and looked poised to be another breakout indie hit like Kevin Smith’s “Clerks”, Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” and Robert Rodriquez’s “El Mariachi.”

Instead, the movie just disappeared.

Over the years, “Colin Fitz Lives!” developed into something of a legend in the indie world. Fans everywhere wondered when the “greatest film never released” — as it was dubbed by the San Francisco Chronicle — was ever going to hit their local theater. Fourteen years and three presidents later, the movie is finally about to get its theatrical due.

So what happened? As director Robert Bella describes in an essay that appeared in Indiewire.com, the short answer is crippling debt.

Back in the days before the Internet, Bella was a struggling actor with dreams of directing when he came across a script written by his friend Tom Morrissey — a tale about two clueless security guards posted at the grave of Colin Fitz, a dead rock star with a very obsessive fan base.

Even though he had never directed a thing, much less went to film school, Bella decided to make the movie.

At first, the stars seemed to align for the budding filmmaker. He managed to line up an impressive array of actors — including William H. Macy (“Fargo“), Martha Plimpton (“The Goonies“) and John McGinty (“Scrubs”) — provided that he shoot immediately.

Bella had $50,000 of his own cash he was willing to put into the project and managed to raise another $100K. With today’s cheap digital video cameras and editing software, that would be plenty to finish a feature film. But that wasn’t the case in the analog ’90s when it was commonly understood that shooting, cutting and printing a feature film would cost a half million dollars.

His plan was shoot first and raise money for post production later. Yet not long after production wrapped and with his coffers depleted, Bella received a call from Sundance with an offer he couldn’t refuse. “The good news: The film had been accepted into Dramatic Competition. The bad news: A 35mm print had to be in Park City, Utah. In eight weeks.”

So he did what every budding indie filmmaker would do in that situation: He maxed out 20 credit cards to raise the money needed to make a finished print of the film.

In spite of the warm reception “Colin Fitz Lives” got at Sundance, Bella soon discovered none of the distribution deals offered would cover his costs. When it was all added up, including music rights, lab fees, and deferred salaries, the filmmaker realized that he would owe about $250,000.

The amount proved to be crippling for the struggling filmmaker; he was financially wrecked and his movie was in hock. He even wound up on the street for a spell. “I had called in so many favors, crashed on so many couches, and borrowed so much money from friends and relatives that I simply could not bear to ask for yet one more favor. So, I slept in a storage space. Along with all my worldly possessions.”

It took six years for Bella to dig himself out of personal debt and another eight to buy back his movie from his creditors. Along the way, he managed to direct a few other low-budget movies and act in a handful of others. Then not long after managed to buy back his cut negatives from the lab, he was casually approached by Arianna Bocco of IFC Films.

“‘What ever happened with ‘Colin Fitz’?” [she asked.]
I told her, ‘It’s sitting in my closet. Wanna buy it?’
Lo and behold, she said: “Sure!’

I couldn’t believe it. After all those years – it was just that easy.”

“Colin Fitz Lives!” comes out on demand August 4 and then in a limited theatrical release Aug 6.

The woman at the center of an investigation that brought down the boss of technology giant Hewlett-Packard cozied up to Aussie tennis star Mark Philippoussis on his reality TV show, it was revealed Sunday.
HP chief executive Mark Hurd, who has been credited with reinvigorating the company, resigned suddenly Friday, after an investigation of his relationship with a female contractor found he violated the company’s business standards.
The identity of the marketing contractor was revealed by the San Jose Mercury News Sunday as Jodie Fisher, a 50-year-old single mother and actress who most recently appeared in the reality TV show “Age of Love.”
In a statement Sunday released by her attorney, Gloria Allred, Fisher said she was “saddened” that Hurd lost his job as HP CEO.
“I was surprised and saddened that Mark Hurd lost his job over this,” said Fisher in her statement.
“That was never my intention.”
Fisher has appeared in various television shows and films, including a number of R-rated movies when she was in her 30s, Allred said.
A list of her films found on the Internet Movie Database includes the titles “Easy Rider — The Ride Back,” “Blood Dolls,” “The Outsider,” “Sheer Passion” and the unrated “Body of Influence 2.”
“Age of Love” was an American reality TV dating series that ran for one season in 2007.
The show featured then-30-year-old Philippoussis as he looked for love among a group of women ranging in age from their early 20s to their late 40s.
Fisher, then 46, was the first “cougar” to be eliminated from the show, in which she was presented as the vice president of a commercial real estate company. She appeared in two episodes.
Fisher worked as a HP marketing contractor between late 2007 and late 2009.
In her statement, Fisher said she and Hurd didn’t have an affair or a sexual relationship.
“Mark (Hurd) and I never had an affair or intimate sexual relationship. I first met Mark in 2007 when I interviewed for a contractor job at the company,” Fisher said in the statement.
“At HP, I was under contract to work at high-level customer and executive summit events held around the country and abroad. I prepared for those events, worked very hard and enjoyed working for HP.
“I have resolved my claim with Mark privately, without litigation, and I do not intend to comment on it further.

Some of them even took videos on their mobiles. This incident came into light after the MMS clip of the girl called ‘Adibasi girl’ flashed. It is known from sources that the girl was facing a horrible punishment for loving a boy who belonged to a different community. This is a four-month-old incident, but, the girl is yet to get justice. The police came to know about this shameful incident when the said MMS flashed. Even the panchayats of the village knew about it but, they remained mum. The police nabbed five of the key accused on Sunday after knowing about the MMS.

The MMS shows the tribal girl walking nude through the dusty roads and a tribal crowd following her with drums and beating her with sticks if she stops walking. Some of the men even molest her on the way as the girl tries to cover her honour with her hands.

Movie Plot Summary:
A cop travels back in time to take on a corporation that's out to eliminate a doctor who has created a new technology which can break up the monopoly on a energy resources.
Who were the ad wizards who came up with this one? Wong Jing's Future X-Cops is as bad as it looks, which means its both awful and pretty damn funny. You must be able to enjoy crap if you're going to get even an ounce of pleasure from this mess. Why this wasn't released on April 1st is a mystery.

Review: by Kozo:
Wong Jing, you make this too easy. Hong Kong's most infamous filmmaker returns to his own vomit with Future X-Cops, a remake of his 1993 cringe-fest Future Cops. Actually, calling Future X-Cops a remake is unfair because the original Future Cops lifted from The Terminator, Fight Back to School and the Capcom video game Street Fighter II, among others. Thankfully, Future X-Cops isn't dumb enough to steal from a questionably adaptable video game, but it more than compensates with its lousy visual effects and general crappiness. Add in Wong Jing's substandard screenwriting and direction and you get an obvious result: a bad movie. The big mystery: is Future X-Cops so bad that it's good?

Andy Lau stars as Kidd Zhao, a cop from the year 2080. Word gets out that genetically-enhanced bastard Kalon (Fan Siu-Wong) and his gene-spliced gang are out to kill Dr. Masterson (Ma Jing-Wu), inventor of the future's clean energy source, so the future cops brace for an attack at the museum Masterson is attending. The cops save Masterson, but they don't prevent Kalon and pals from getting away with a time travel device, meaning Kalon will surely head back in time to the year 2020 to kill Masterson and prevent the future from ever happening. The film's first big action sequence involves the baddies' attack on the museum, but their theft of the time travel device? Not shown and related entirely through exposition. And hey, how do the cops know Kalon's exact plans? No idea, but they just do. Twenty minutes in and Future X-Cops is already pushing for the bad moviemaking Hall of Fame.
After ten more minutes, the film has cemented its first ballot inclusion. Kidd demands to be sent back in time to protect Masterson because Kalon killed his wife (Fan Bing-Bing) - and hey, you should always send a man with a grudge to save the world because he won't have a conflict of interest or anything like that. Here's a better idea: why don’t you send back a whole squadron of cops (like they did in, uh, Future Cops) if you're so sure that a genetically-enhanced guy with bat wings and lobster arms wants to destroy the future. Nobody has that bright idea, but they do give Kidd an extreme makeover, replacing his entire body with Megaman-ish cyborg accessories that enable him to fight Kalon and his obnoxious cat-like cyborg girlfriend (Tang Yi-Fei). Will Kidd save the future all by his cyborg lonesome? Or will he get mired in a tired sitcom about a future cyborg stuck in the past dealing with annoying kids and a woman who wants to jump his robot bones?

When you make a movie like Future X-Cops, it should be edgy sci-fi action like Robocop. Well, this movie follows suit, adding hard sci-fi concepts and epic action sequences – OH WAIT SORRY NOT THE CASE HERE. This is a Wong Jing movie, so naturally the whole thing devolves into an illogical sitcom mess about a smarmy robot who acts like Andy Lau. Kidd is not supposed to screw with the past to prevent time paradoxes, but Wong Jing only applies that sci-fi concept to Kidd's potential romance. Ergo, Kidd can't date Miss Holly (Barbie Hsu, in the film's only good performance), but he's free to reveal his identity to whomever he wants, plus zip around in his Megaman alter ego saving people he shouldn't have been around to save in the first place. Also, Kidd and Talon go through secondary transformations when battling, the result of which makes them…taller! Maybe extending their legs makes for some cool-looking CGI, but it means absolutely nothing to the story. Few things here do.
Examining Wong Jing's screenplay for anything other than nonsense is futile. His illogical story exists only to string together shallow sci-fi concepts, disconnected jokes, random set pieces and super-pronounced emotions. There are decent moments between Kidd and Miss Holly, and also Kidd and his daughter Kiki (CJ7's Xu Jiao), but the film's lack of convince makes all of it seem glaringly tacked on. Also, one potential surprise goes for the heartstrings, but it's hampered by Wong Jing's omnipresent plot holes, which make one wonder why such a moment even had to occur. That's one major problem with Future X-Cops – that the barest glance at the screenplay reveals the whole film to be shoddily conceived. Science fiction requires some sort of consistency to make it convincing. In Wong Jing's defense, he's claimed that sci-fi was never his goal, and that he was trying to tell a moving and emotional story. Last time I checked, anger and disbelief were valid emotions. Also, I was moved to ask for a refund, so hey, Wong Jing, Future X-Cops is a success.
Long story short, Future X-Cops is insanely terrible and should only be viewed by people willing to table quality in the name of inanity. Who are those people? Children under the age of six, plus people who love deliciously terrible moviemaking. There's laughs to be had from the ridiculous action sequences, which includes scenes of mutated animal bad guys posing for no apparent reason except to delight children looking for a live-action cross between Power Rangers and Pokemon. Fans of lousy acting can enjoy the crazy performance from Tang Yi-Fei, who so enthusiastically plays the evil catgirl that it becomes genuinely frightening. Also, the visual effects by Korean VFX house Kinomotive are hilariously awful, managing the same effectiveness as Wong Jing's The Wesley's Mysterious File, which came out a full eight years ago. It's sad to think that Wong Jing's skills with CGI have not improved in eight years, but they haven't. Neither has his storytelling, direction, or utter lack of shame. If Future X-Cops teaches us anything, it's that you can always count on Wong Jing. For crap. (Kozo 2010)

Plot Summary:
Pang Ho-Cheung does a slasher! It's also infused with social issues, making Dream Home a mismatched genre experiment or the dryest, darkest comedy ever made. It's hard to take completely seriously - and it's absolutely, positively not for everyone - but Pang's fans should have a good time.

Review by Kozo:
Dream Home is gory and gratuitous, and yet it aspires to do more. Pang Ho-Cheung’s long-awaited film is an oddly-conceived beast – an extreme thriller that mixes social commentary with the sort of splatter experience that genre fans lust after. The mixture isn’t totally effective; the film possesses a thoughtful, time-shifting structure that makes its violence more contemplative and less cathartic than one expects of a slasher film. Still, Dream Home is the work of an undeniably strong filmmaker, and an understanding of Pang Ho-Cheung goes a long way in aiding appreciation. And if the viewer has neither the time nor inclination to care about the things that Pang cares about? They get a sledge hammer, sweaty sex, spilled entrails, and some snipped-off body parts. Pang Ho-Cheung makes sure that there’s something here for everyone. Except probably grandma.

Josie Ho produces and stars as Sheung, a wannabe homeowner who embarks on an impressive killing spree. We first meet her in 2007 when she offs her first victim, a security guard (Wong Ching) at high rise housing estate No. 1 Victoria Bay. Cue title card then flashbacks, where we’re given glimpses of Sheung at different times in her life. Sometimes it’s a few months back, sometimes it’s her childhood, but the flashbacks spell out who she is and where she comes from, sometimes affectionately and sometimes depressingly. Despite some brushes with bad girl behavior (e.g., foul language as a child, bullying her younger brother), Sheung doesn’t seem like a woman suffering extreme psychosis. She’s had a tough but average life, living in rundown public housing and watching as the government and property developers take the homes of adjoining neighbors and, most especially, one of her childhood friends. Years later, No. 1 Victoria Bay springs up in its place, and Sheung fixates on it as the location of her future home.

The problem: she can’t afford to live there. Few people can – one of many real and honest details about Hong Kong life that Pang Ho-Cheung highlights in Dream Home. The flashbacks give a cursory look at Sheung’s life, depicting key incidents while providing a glimpse at her routine, sometimes demoralizing day-to-day. Her work is unfulfilling (cold-call phone sales plus a retail job), and she's involved with a married louse (Eason Chan) who won’t even lend her money to help with an operation for her father (Norman Tsui). Meanwhile, the film regularly flashes forward to 2007, where Sheung continues her murder spree, moving from the security guard to a housewife (Michelle Ye) and her philandering husband (Sin Lap-Man), and then to the noisy upstairs neighbors (Lawrence Chou and Derek Tsang) who’re set for some fun with a couple of mainland prostitutes (Song Xiaocheng and Zhou Chuchu). Obviously, something has upset Sheung so much that she’s moved from cold-call sales to stabbing and slicing, and as the film jumps back and forth in time, the reason for her change slowly but surely surfaces.

Will Sheung’s reason for becoming a pint-sized Jason Voorhees resonate with audiences worldwide? Possibly not, as they’re very Hong Kong-specific. At its opening, Dream Home provides copious onscreen statistics about Hong Kong’s ridiculous housing woes. For example, since 1997, Hong Kongers have seen a 1% increase in wages, while housing prices jumped 15% in 2007 alone. Sheung’s breaking point ties into this explicitly told disparity, but it’s not just housing prices that make Sheung a murderess, it’s all the pressures of Hong Kong life – the materialism, the social pressure, and the incessant compromises – that push her over the edge. Pang reveals these details in a quiet and intense manner that any Hong Kong resident should be able to identify with. Combined with Yu Lik-Wai’s claustrophobic lensing and Gabriele Roberto’s sometimes cacophonic electronic score, the mood Pang creates is remarkable. Given everything, no matter how mundane, that Sheung goes through, there’s no doubt that she should reach a breaking point.

However, Sheung’s over-the-top response is somewhat problematic. Sheung’s killing spree involves some dark and very creative kills, from a simple disembowelment to death by vacuum, bedframe and drug paraphernalia. Pang’s use of everyday tools as killing instruments absolutely plays into his Hong Kong property theme, but is this level of extreme carnage really necessary? The violence is exceptionally sensationalistic, and if a viewer were to reject Dream Home due to its showy excess they would have every right to. Pang’s social themes in Dream Home are not subtext; they’re explicitly presented as the cause of Sheung’s psychosis, and the ensuing over-the-top violence feels too gleefully arranged to be justified. Also, the violence is only visceral, with little emotional impact on the characters. Josie Ho conveys her character’s subtle disintegration well, but when she kills, she’s pretty much all business – and she probably shouldn’t be. While her problems are felt and realistic, her solution enters the realm of gory fantasy.

Dream Home could easily polarize audiences, leaving only one segment fully satisfied: the people who dig Pang Ho-Cheung for his unapologetic love of the cinema. Film is a way for Pang to express who he is and what he cares about – and hey, he’s a guy who cares about Hong Kong social issues AND nearly every film genre known to man, including slashers, low-budget kaiju and probably obscure European porn. It’s not surprising for Pang to mix genres this way; Men Suddenly in Black and You Shoot, I Shoot both took real issues and exploited them for smart, winning satire. Dream Home attempts something similar with social drama and the slasher film, but maybe the lesson here is that the two genres are not easily combined. That doesn’t mean Dream Home is a failure; it isn't. The concept may be flawed, but the execution is superlative. Pang’s tension is superb, the effects from Fat Face are quality, and Pang’s sure use of black humor is at times enthralling. This is a guy who can do a lot, and if Dream Home is intended as a showreel for a multi-talented director with his own way of doing things, then it’s a good one. Either way, there's still gore and that'll do for some. (Kozo, Reviewed at the Udine Far East Film Festival, 2010)

National Day 2010

August 9 is National Day in Singapore, a celebration of Singapore's independence and a pretty great party to boot. As well as a parade and fireworks display, there's a good collection of fringe events to see. But if you haven't got yourself a ticket yet, you might have to make do with some of the other things going on around the city. Not to worry, there's a load of good stuff to get down to this weekend and on August 9 itself.

Two-way telecast of the celebratory activities into five heartland locations, namely Choa Chu Kang, Woodlands, Bishan, Sengkang and Eunos will be introduced by the organisers to expand the NDP mood and participation into the heart of the city. At the Padang, this will allow audiences in the heartlands to interact and engage with the activities. The official website (www.ndp.org.sg) of NDP was launched by Colonel Lim in which information about National Day Parade 2010 is given. The homepage of the website is made up of a montage of photographs taken and sent in by regular Singaporeans. To give insider perspectives of NDP preparations, guest bloggers have also been invited.

Singapore Celebrates its 45th birthday on 9th August, About Parade & Ceremony:

Singapore celebrates its 45th birthday on 9th August, 2010 and the parade returns to the historical setting of the Padang. The first National Day Parade was held in the year 1966. A total of 30 contingents will take part in the Parade & Ceremony segment of the NDP in this year. The 5 pillars of the Total Defence: Military Defence, Civil Defence, Economic Defence, Social Defence and Psychological Defence are represented by the Parade & Ceremony segment. The 5 military and HOME Team contingents from the Army, Navy, Airforce, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force represent the military and civil defence.

The 10 Uniformed Youth Organisations (UYOs) made up by the Scouts, Girl Guides, Boys and Girls Brigade, Red Cross, St John, National Civil Defence Cadet Corps, National Police Cadet Corps, and the National Cadet Corps represent the psychological defence. Besides this there will be 10 social and economic groups from the PAP, NTUC, HDB, PUB, SingTel, SATS, ERA, Keppel Corp, Sembcorp Industries and Sembcorp Marine which represents the social and economical defence. From the 3 services of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Singapore Police Force, there are four guards of honour groups. To provide the resounding beat for the participants, the students from the NCC Band combining with members from the SAF Band and Police Band will participate in Combined Band contingent this year.

NDP Theme for 2010 : Singapore National Day Parade Tickets InformationLieutenant-Colonel Lek Seng Khoon from Army Headquarters will be the Parade Commander and Master Warrant Officer Albert Chen from SAFTI Military Institute will be the Parade RSM. The audiences will be treated to the Aerial Display and Mobile Column recitals that take place in NDP once every five years, after the striding out from the Padang. The contestants will re-constitute and go on to a march around the Marina Bay area which symbolizes the march forward into the new Singapore. The rooftop of City Hall and the Marina Bay waters, other firework points include The Esplanade, Suntec Tower, Pan Pacific Hotel, Ritz Carlton, UOB Tower and Maybank, all of which make for great vantage points for those who want to catch a glance of the fireworks besides the Padang fields.

Full News:
In a sign that the increasingly unpopular PAP regime is getting cold feet at the lack of public support for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) hosted in Singapore from 14 – 26 August this year, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong repeated an earlier plead by his colleague Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to fellow Singaporeans to lend their support to YOG.

Speaking at Nanyang Polytechnic yesterday where he received the YOG flame, PM Lee called on Singaporeans to show their “spirit” to the world during the YOG:

“The flame could not have received a warmer welcome from the cheerleaders, from the crowd, from the public and from all of us. This is the spirit which we should show the world when we host the YOG starting this weekend. We are all part of it. Let’s show the world what we can do,” he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.

Despite the extensive publicity given to the YOG by the state media, the response from ordinary Singaporeans other than the participants and students forced to “volunteer” for the event has been most disappointing so far.

In an online poll conducted by Channel News Asia last week, 88 percent of the respondents or 5,639 Singaporeans said that they are “not interested” in the YOG at all.

Besides putting up billboards and banners in all parts of the country, the PAP regime has also launched a massive PR exercise to get grouchy Singaporeans to smile more often by installing mirrors at bus-stops, attracting much ridicule and derision from an already disgruntled citizenry.

In the meantime, a Facebook group “I hate YOG” set up to protest against the YOG has attracted more than 800 members so far as the PAP regime continues its “wayang” that its vanity fair is enjoying widespread support from Singaporeans by resorting to its usual astroturfing tactics to generate fake grassroots support.

Want Singaporeans to support YOG or support PAP gov.Stupid things we do,the good things all you get.The praise go to your face, the money go inside your pocket. For us? Get nothing!!

This is a ridiculous event, the more important issue to address is the high income gap, ballooning housing costs, smelly and squeezy MRTs…..and more taxpayers’ money is spent on this useless event instead?

YOG is belonged to the new citizens since you have imported at about 2.5 millions new faces recently? Your PAP party is an hypocrities by importing foreign athletes to compete in the sport. It is more like a cheating case to show proudly to the world. I think other countries are laughing quietly at your stupidity by buying in new sporting foreigners. In fact, I feel ashame new sport citizens in our little red dot.

Our gahmen has never put in real effort to groom local talents. Don’t provide support nevermind but don’t mass import foreigners to represent us and don’t go around telling us that we should be proud of their achievements. How much $$$ reward are we providing to these foreigners? The gahmen is insulting all local sports people who have to work part time to make ends meet. And now gahmen wants us to support YOG given the damage it has done to sports?

The still-birth of the YOG clearly shows that these self proclaimed ‘talents’, who insist that they are worth more then many private sector top management, do not have the entrepreneurial skills when they started paying themselves silly. They are not worth their slat in seeking out opportunities and making it work. This unfortunately is a cost borne by the country!

To legislate a new rule to fine motorists for obstructing a YOG bus is the most ridiculous rule I’ve ever heard and adds to the irritation to the populace in staging this event. Getting the radio DJ’s to keep reminding people is an utter put-off.

the propaganda is never ending. YOG is basically a sports meet among students from all over the place. Nobody knows the athletes apart from their family & friends. Nobody know the athletes especially when its unheard/unknown of their achievement/ excellence in the sport yet.

Its not as if Singaporeans r so free to absent themselves from work, to grace the events. Who’s going to compensate the time & opportunity costs for sacrificing work, to be spectators at the games?

Beijing gov compensated the industries to halt their operations, in order to keep the air clean, lesser road users, lesser traffic conditions. What has our gov done to better facilitate the event?

“…Anybody who decides to take me on needs to put on knuckle dusters. If you think you can hurt me more than I can hurt you, try. There is no other way you can govern a Chinese society.”

The YOG is a PAP initiative and must not be supported at all because the PAP’s policy is to look at native S’poreans, spit in their faces and laugh at them, why?

After being dragged to see the preview, even if I would be in Singapore, I wouldn’t care a damn. The preview seemed like an extended NDP. Wondering what has the founding of Singapore from a fishing village got to do with Olympics games. With kid playing “oh bey shum”, and hero fighting monster and story book story telling theme, sooooooooo kiddish! From the claps from the audience, it’s a let down! I have to leave when the countries’ flags enter. Very boring, nothing to wow about!

When will the govt act to set up the $358m Trust Fund for the sick and the elderly with help from TH and GIC to fund it on a dollar-to-dollar backing basis on the contributions make by the public?

Similarly, money in one’s pocket is not one’s money too, unless it is spent by the person, if not ultimately it will belong to someone else, isn’t it?

We expect that 90 percent of the annual income of the Trust Fund (initial capital sum target of $500m to be set up over 5 years?] be used and targeted at helping the really poor and the sickly, elderly.

All is right when one knows how to respect the Unseen to work with altruistic love. Why? It depends on the word, acts and deeds of humans, including politicians and those in high political offices knowing what is great love and what is selfish/self-centred love, or misplaced love, isn’t it?

Plot Summary:
So late, so little. Huang Xiaoming and Zhang Jingchu are not enough to save this tired and remarkably unfunny sequel to Lee Lik-Chee's 1993 blockbuster Flirting Scholar. Not starring Stephen Chow, naturally.

Flirting Scholar 2 Movie Review by Kozo:
Who saw this one coming? Probably no one. Seventeen years after earning mega money with the super box office hit Flirting Scholar, director Lee Lik-Chee returns with – what else -- Flirting Scholar 2. However, did people really dig the 1993 original because they took a super liking to that particular film's brand of Huangmei opera-inspired nonsense comedy? Or did they turn out in droves because it happened to star some guy named Stephen Chow? I'm betting on that latter reason, and since Lee didn't bring Stephen Chow with him for Flirting Scholar 2, the whole production earns a big red flag.
Flirting Scholar 2 also gets a red card, because it's pretty much a stinker that wouldn’t impress anyone looking for a little effort from their movies. Superficially, the film isn't a bad idea. The production values are passable and the performers are at least decent quality. Stepping into Stephen Chow's shoes is super-handsome Huang Xiaoming, who likely earned the job of playing Tong Pak-Fu (Or Tang Bohu, as the subtitles now insist on calling him) thanks to his popular TV drama turn as Wai Siu-Bo (played previously by Stephen Chow and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, among others). Opposite Huang is Zhang Jingchu, who's always worth watching, and a who's who of Stephen Chow cronies show up in supporting roles. So far so good. So what went wrong?
For starters, the first half of Flirting Scholar 2 is an absolute chore, possessing the same amount of laughs as you'd find at a triad funeral. Mimi Chu reprises her role as Tang Bohu's mom, and Nat Chan Bak-Cheung also makes a return as one of his scholarly comrades, but both pretty much repeat the same shtick from the previous film, right down to copied situations and sight gags -- including one where we see Nat Chan without any clothes. Um…yeah. Things pick up a notch with the arrival of Fan Siu-Wong as a guyliner-sporting evil pirate, who disguises himself as a monk in order to kidnap women for some ungodly eastern country. Regardless of yet another hint that other cultures (like Japan maybe) are the true enemy, the antagonists here are just some evil Chinese, and it's up to Tang Bohu and the filmmakers to rout the baddies.
However, along the way they make enemies of the audience too. How do the filmmakers achieve this feat? First of all, they deliver too little of Tang Bohu and too much of his pals, namely Chan Bak-Cheung, Richie Jen and Zhou Libo as three other Ming Dynasty-era scholars. Flirting Scholar 1 also featured these characters, but it quickly sidelined them for Stephen Chow, Stephen Chow, and even more Stephen Chow. Basically, Chow carried that film with his comic persona change-ups, which saw him switch from charismatic cad to whip-smart wiseacre to self-deprecating dope. Huang Xiaoming covers the same range, but he's not the one the audience is following. Rather, it's the abundance of tired jokes and parodies that move the film along, and not Huang’s mugging or attempts at coolness. Huang can be a funny guy, and he's certainly handsome, but he can't surprise the audience like Stephen Chow can.
Neither can Lee Lik-Chee, especially when he's repeating so many jokes from movies that aren't even his. Aside from the Flirting Scholar retreads, Lee also steals an entire gag from the Lucky Stars series involving, uh, Nat Chan taking off his clothes and wandering around naked. Again. There's also plenty of bathroom humor and an amusing and overused gag that apes Transformers. Richie Jen fares okay in a secondary role, while mainland actor Zhou Libo proves more amusing as the fourth scholar. The abundance of former Stephen Chow co-stars (Yuen King-Tan, Law Kar-Ying, Lam Chi-Chung, Tin Kai-Man, Cheng Cho) provide a little "spot the actor" fun, while Fan Siu-Wong earns laughs because of his ridiculous eyeliner. Zhang Jingchu does fine when called upon to bring the drama, but it’s hard to gauge her comic chops because the jokes are so tired and poorly staged. Zhang may be a skilled comedienne but you won't find much proof of that here.

When Flirting Scholar 2 closes, it reveals itself to be a prequel to the original Flirting Scholar, which would probably mean more to non-Chinese audiences if they didn't equate the franchise with only Stephen Chow. At least the ending gives Huang Xiaoming a chance to show off his best screen persona, the charismatic and intense brooder, and the climax delivers some perfunctory action to distract audiences who require a few kicks with their films. The action sequences from Dion Lam are competently staged, though really, they're not much to write home about. That's basically the only thing you can say about Flirting Scholar 2 -- that it's not anything worth mentioning, and will only amuse in that "hey, I'm bored, look what's on TV" kind of way. Nowadays, audiences seem to want more from their cinema experiences than mild distraction, and with that in mind, Flirting Scholar 2 is a total failure. On the positive side, you can exercise personal discretion and choose not to see it. Even the worst films offer minor victories. (Kozo 2010)

Plot Summary:
Policeman Don Lee often works with informants but numerous too-close calls and failed missions cause him to see the world as one betrayal after another - then he meets Guy, and is given a new chance to change his views
Gotta hand it to Dante Lam. The man knows a good thing when he sees it and the man works fast.
Though I believe his Fire of Conscience is still awaiting its premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival - James? Can you confirm? - the first trailer for Lam's next picture is already upon us.
Titled The Stool Pigeon, this one reunites Lam with his Beast Stalker cast though it inverts their roles with Nick Cheung now the cop and Nicholas Tse the criminal. Details are still sketchy but here's the limited synopsis they have released:
Lam is on a serious hot streak right now - he has arguably claimed the position of Hong Kong's current golden boy when it comes to high energy action films - and this one looks to continue things nicely. Check the trailer below!

Movie Preview:
Dante Lam is a busy man. We recently wrote about his upcoming Fire of Conscience and with that film now through principal photography and into post production Lam is already moving along to his next film.
Emperor Motion Pictures will hold a 'Cranking Up Ceremony' tomorrow - November 2nd - to officially mark the beginning of work on Stool Pigeon, a film that will reunite Lam with his Beast Stalker stars Nick Cheung and Nicholas Tse. They're saying virtually nothing about this one right now other than that it's a triad crime picture but with a title like that it isn't hard to picture where they're going with it.
The Stool Pigeon will see role reversals for Cheung and Tse who played a ruthless hitman and a dedicated cop, respectively, in The Beast Stalker. Cheung is the cop this time with Tse taking on the role of an ex-con turned police informant who tries to infiltrate the triads. Also returning from The Beast Stalker is Miao Pu, who will play Cheung's wife again, and veteran thespian Liu Kai-chi.
