Satheesh Poduval, who has authored many short stories and who had worked as an associate to noted directors like T.V. Chandran, Jayaraj and K.R. Mohanan, makes his directorial debut with Samayam, a very sensitive film that takes us into the lives of potters as a community. (The last film that we had on the potter community was Mankolangal, directed by Subrahmaniam Shanthakumar, a few years ago).

Samayam tells the story of Chathappan, who is a member of the potter community. Chathappan, who is exceptionally skilled in his craft, believes that he is not the one to spend his lifetime making pots and mud vessels only. A skilled sculptor too, he believes that he should always aim at expressing himself through the many sculptures he can make.

Chathappan meanwhile has a family to look after, and when times change, as a family man he is faced with a lot of responsibilities. But Chathappan spends his time drinking, participating in cock-fights and loafing about. In fact it is his wife Manikyam who takes on the burden of looking after the family.

The story is set against the backdrop of the changing times. Sreenivasan becomes Chathappan while Shwetha Menon does a rather deglamorised role as Manikyam. Vijayaraghavan too plays a key role in the film, that of Bhairavan, a man with supernatural powers. Nedumudi Venu also has an important role, while Salim Kumar has been brought in to provide moments of humour.

Head Constable Sudhakaran is an honest and responsible policeman. He lives with his grandmother and his only daughter Sreekutty, who is in her tenth standard. He pins great hopes on his daughter. One day a girl of his daughter's age is raped and murdered in his own village. Sudhakaran is filled with anxiety. Daily news reports in the papers of rapes and murders don't help. The fact that his daughter is left alone with his octogenarian grandmother even when he is on night duty adds to his anxiety. His grandmother's death pushes him over the edge.

Avastha is the debut directorial venture of N Sasidharan, who also does the script for the film which reflects the pathetic situation in today's society where toddlers and grannies are being sexually abused and murdered. Sasidharan, who has studied cinematography, has worked on several tele-films and documentaries. He has also worked as an assistant to some top-notch directors in Mollywood.

Saikumar has what promises to be a very memorable role to play in the film as Head Constable Sudhakaran, much like the role played by Salim Kumar in Achchanurangatha Veedu. The film has a host of young new artists playing the roles of Sudhakaran's daughter and her friends. Shooting is currently going on near Ottappalam.

Written by S Rajaram, now Kerala's Chief Town Planner and a former classmate of Rajan whose disappearance during the Emergency is still a simmering issue, Valmeekam is a love story that traverses the distance from the naxalism of that period to the present day. The film has a song, the lyrics for which were written by S Rajaram and put to music by Rajan himself.

Narikode Narayanan was a police officer during the Emergency and known for his extreme cruelty. Now retired, he is ostracized by society and lives in isolation. He is filled with remorse. Robinhood is about a high-tech computer wizard and a crook (Prithviraj) who specializes in ATM robberies.
Knonw for playing lighter roles, actor Jayasuriya seems to be working on his image makeover. After portraying a tough police officer in V K Prakash’s Positive, the actor is all set to take gaian the cop’s character in his upcoming flick Robinhood which features Prithviraj and Naren in the lead roles and the flick is going to be directed by veteran Joshy. Jayasuriya will be investigating the number of robberies happening in the ATM’s. Jaysuriya is quite happy to be a part of a movie, directed by veteran Joshy, and is more interested as the young team of their previous hit ‘Clasmmates’ is reuniting with this movie.

Pritviraj is finally becoming the favorites of the senior directors of Mollywood. The actor who was lamenting all these years that he was never given good characters by the big directors in the field will now join with the veteran of the group, Joshy for the new venture 'Robinhood'.

His scriptors of the super hit film ‘Sachi – Sethu’ will pen the scripts for this film which will be produced by P.K Muralidharan and Shantha Murali of Anantha Vision who have earlier created his two blockbusters –‘Classmates’ and ‘Chocolate’.

The actor who has just completed 'Thalappavu' is presently in the sets of Tamil movie 'Vellithirai'. He will join the multi starrer 'Twenty Twenty' next week.

Prithviraj also have plans to team up with the veterans like Shaji Kailas and Fazil, this year. Apart from these projects the actor will also play the lead in the films of Bipin Prabhakar, Biju Arukooty and M Padmakumar.

I have to say that I probably have seen the parody of this film more times than I have seen the movie itself. Somehow, through quirks of fate (namely, a WPST-NJ promotion), I got a free copy of the tape of Robin Hood: Men In Tights and have put up with watching it time after time. So, in the sense of cosmic justice, I figured I should actually watch the movie that spawned the film that has given me so many laughs that it probably didn’t deserve.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is yet another example of Hollywood taking a famous story and making it Hollywood-compliant. In other words, the original story is still there in some bizarre form (he robs from the rich and gives to the poor), but we’re missing Prince John, and Robin Hood’s not speaking in a British accent. I can accept Robin Hood not speaking in a British accent if he happens to also be an animated fox (Disney’s version, which took up some of my childhood hours), but when Kevin Costner takes a stab at it I just approach the entire movie from that point on with a sort of incredulity.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves takes the basic story and warps it. This time, the Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Alan Rickman) is the big bad guy, out to usurp the throne of King Richard while he is away. The poor aren’t being overly taxed, and thus the tax collector plays no part in the story. Nottingham uses a witch that looks like Cher just after the bandages are removed from plastic surgery to help his ends. Apparently, the witch served as a nursemaid to Nottingham, which gives a final explanation to why we as a viewing public have been forced to death with the mythos of his anal-retentive personality for all of these years.

That sidebar dealt with, Robin of Loxley has been away at the crusades, and still has a thing out for Maid Marian (who is played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and often wields a dagger in the film). In this version we also get into a semi-Freudian struggle with Loxley and Will Scarlet (Christian Slater), which serves to give the only plot twist to the movie. Also of note is that we get a buddy-comedy sort of atmosphere between Azeem (Morgan Freeman) and Robin, which makes the entire movie feel like we’re watching Lethal Weapon with swords instead of 9mms.

Although I will alternatively laud writers John Watson and Pen Densham with doing something new with a story that has been fairly wrung-out-to-dry, I will not congratulate them on the drab dialogue. Likewise, director Kevin Reynolds is able to handle to fighting sequences rather well, but still cannot figure out that he is supposed to help the actors in their work.

The only actor who actually seems to take his job in this film seriously is Morgan Freeman, who is able to act like exactly what he should feel like in the film: a fish out of water. A black person in a country currently at war with black people, Azeem is able to handle the racism that is thrown at him without losing his cool, due to a level of unbelievable patience. Morgan Freeman conveys this well. Kevin Costner, on the other hand, had better stick to making baseball movies.

I cannot offer much in the way of consolation for this movie’s shortcomings. Nor can I truly laud the few talents which it has, which include the same joy just about anyone gets from watching a movie that they know is terrible.

Now Robin Hood comes to a special edition version on DVD, a remastered two-disc affair with all the trimmings. Two commentary tracks discuss the 12 minutes of extra footage worked into the film (they’re hard to really notice, though the film now surpasses 2 1/2 hours), plus a bazillion archival documentaries and interviews — including Bryan Adams performing the theme sing "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" at an Irish castle. Bulls-eye, baby!

A movie on the life of one of the greatest of the rulers of Kerala has been in the rounds for the last two decades. In fact, MT Vasudevan Nair, one of the master scriptwriters of all times, had been on this thinking from the days of his 'Oru Vadakkan Veergatha' which came out in 1989. Now after 18 years from this epoch making movie, 'Pazhassi Raja' is slowly but steadily shaping up under the directorial ship of ace director Hariharan,to become the biggest epic movie of our times.
The movie which was in the making since May, last year is into its last session which will get completed with another 25 days of shoot. Most of the important scenes of the movie are shot with four cameras working simultaneously. The movie planned with the biggest ever budget for a Malayalam movie (rumored to be more than eight crores), is produced by Gokulam Gopalan, who also consider the movie as his prestige project.
This magnum opus is expected to bring out the story of the first organized revolt against British rule, led by Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam family near Thalassery in Kannur district.
"The story of ‘Pazhassi Raja' one of our first, but least known freedom fighters, appealed to me also because it offered tremendous visual possibilities in the backdrops of the forests and the wars. We know about the high expectations people have on the film and are confident that we will be able to live up to it'', says the director Hariharan.
‘Pazhassi Raja’ popularly known as the Lion of Kerala isn't well known outside Kerala, but he was one of our country's first freedom fighters. He had to reckon with the armies of the Mysore rulers as well as the British. The British first used him against Tipu's army and then reneged on their treaty. And more, the Raja was agitated by the unpopular revenue policy followed by the East India Company in Malabar .He then threatened to stop collecting taxes if the Company continued with this mode of revenue collection. Even before the much celebrated Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Raja spear headed an attack against the British who made a futile attempt to capture the Raja in his own palace at Pazhassi in April 1796.
The British company then made proclamations which forbid people from supporting the Raja, threatening to confiscate the property of all who are supporting Pazhassi. In 1797 the Raja's men launched attack on the security personnel stationed at Pazhassi, and in continuous battles that were fought over three days, Pazhassi's men were able to overpower the British forces, using swords, spears, bows and arrows . With an army of thousands of Nairs , Pazhassi inflicted such defeat on the British that they were forced to retreat and negotiate. This forced the British to sign a temporary armistice, in accordance with Raja's wishes.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ once again revolted against the occupants when the British decide to take over Wynad in 1799, after the fall of Sreerenga Patanam. This time the British had an upper hand as they controlled most of the south. They confiscated Raja's properties and proclaimed a reward for capturing him. Raja who fled from the palace, took refuge in the jungles accompanied by his wife and immediate attendants.
Raja tried to continue his warfare with the help of aadivasas and his loyal Kurichiyar tribe. Using guerrilla tactics and informers, he kept the British on tenterhooks for longer than any other regional ruler. But on November 30 1805, the Raja was surrounded by Thomas Harvey Babar, a young British officer on charge of suppressing Pazhaassi and was shot dead in an operation on the banks of Mavila Thodu.
Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty, are sure that they are in the making of and a film that will become a milestone in Malayalam cinema.
Pazhassi Raja is a historical subject. Mammootty, Hariharan and MT Vasudevan Nair who gave Oru Vadakkan Veeragaatha to malayalam cinema is now doing this film. The story is all about a King who belong to Kottayam royal family, revolt against the Britishers. Till today, most of the Indians will say "Sepoy Mutiny of 1857" as the first war of Independence. But, Pazhassi raja was the first Indian who fought against British in 1796. Mammotty plays the role of Raja, and Kanika, the young heroine plays the wife ( queen ) of Raja. Sarath kumar makes his debut in malayalam as the friend to Raja. Padmapriya plays a tribal village girl role. The film canned by Pan Vision camera and exploits the latest technical advancements for this movie and the release would be in Christmas 2007.

Our sources say that the Oscar Award winner Rasool Pookutty has been offered a chance in Mammootty’s upcoming movie Pazhassi Raja. The movie is already famous for it’s veteran cast and crew. With legendary writer M.T.Vasudevan Nair writing the script for the movie and Hariharan as the director itself the movie has gained its highest standards. In addition to this, is Rasool Pookutty is also going to be a part of this magnum opus historical movie, then there is no doubt that the movie will turn out to be one of the best in Indian Cinema. Megastar Mammotty, who is playing the role of Pazhassi Raja, has also got Tamil actor Sarath Kumar to play the role of his intimate friend.
The movie will have Telugu actor Suman to play the role of the villain called Pazhaiveetan Chandu. The producer Gokulam Gopalan, has already spent a whoppinh 20 Crores for the movie.
The movie will be released by the 15th of August. Do not miss it!!

After the last year's biggest movie ‘Twenty: 20’ is arriving another multistarrer, ‘Yugapurushan’- a historical based on the life and teachings of the best known social reformer from Kerala, Sree Narayana guru. Director R. Sukumaran, quite famous for his initial works like ‘Paadamudra’ and ‘Raajashilpi’ is narrating the life and teachings of the saint, Sree Narayana Guru,(1856-1928) through the movie, which will have the support from the entire artists from the industry. The director, who is back to industry after 14 years, is planning to give more emphasis on Guru's thoughts and teachings through the films, than to create another biography. He has already completed eighty percent of the shoot, for the movie at various locations at Ottapalam, Kannur, Thaliparambu.

According to the director, the movie is meant to portray how the impact of Guru's vision changed the history of Kerala society. ''I am not trying to describe the complete life of Guru through the movie, but to make the new generation understand the significance of his worldly vision. After watching the movie, I am sure everyone will realise that Guru stood for the entire society, than for any particular segment of it. This will be a movie that will guide the future generations about how guru initiated social reforms in Kerala without shedding a drop of blood and about his teachings, misread by some.''says R Sukumaran.
The movie will feature Thalaivasal Vijay, one of the finest character artists from Kollywood as Sreenarayana Guru. Earlier Mammootty was planned to be in the title role but the thinking actor skillfully pleaded to keep him out of the thought, as he hardly share any physical resemblances with the saint who was a part of this century. Mammootty, now plays the role of K C Kuttan, a revolutionary firebrand leader who lived for Guru and his teachings, and shared a great camaraderie with the sage, in the same period.

While Super star Mohanlal will appear as Swami Vivekanandan in the movie, Babu Antony will come up as Ayyankali, the Harijan leader from the state. The movie will also present historic personalities and contemporaries of guru like Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Chattambi Swamikal, Kumaranasan, T K Madhavan, Dr. Palpu, C V Kunjuraman, Sahodaran Ayyappan and Mannathu Padmanabhan. Navya Nair will appear in double roles, the first as a Brahmin lady named Savithry Antharjanam, inspired by Guru's teachings.

‘Yugapurushan’ planned to get completed in four schedules in a budget of 5 crores is produced by A V Anoop. Also in the cast of the movie are Jagathy Sreekumar, Kalabhavan Mani, Saikumar, Siddhique, Devan, Saji Vaakkandu, George Paul, Saijukurup, Shobha Mohan and Sukumaran. Ramachandra Babu handles the camera for the movie which will have a few songs set to music by Mohan Sithara in the lyrics of Kaithapram. The movie will also feature a few poems written by Guru and Mahakavi Kumaran Asan. Art director K Krishnankutty has created some exceptional sets of Sivagiri and Aruvippuram for the movie, which will be one of its highlights.
