Movie Reviews : I have a penchant for films that delve into storylines where the notion of sacrifice is explored via martyrdom or catch-22 type situations of, to kill or not to kill. The idea of a person duck-taping sticks of dynamite to their body is so foreign to North American audiences, that in a way, the lure of such films is how the act psychological manifests itself inside the film's protagonist. I think back to classics such as Pontecorvo's Battle of Algiers and more recently, Hany Abu-Assad's Paradise Now with today's announcement. Film Movement have strapped themselves to Dror Zahavi's For My Father (Sof Shavua B'Tel Aviv), the picture about possibly altering the destination of one's actions will be set up for an eventual limited theatrical run late in the calender year with their usual cable release quickly right after. The dubbed German trailer below spells out acts I and II, but leaves us guessing in the final act. For My Father focuses on Terek, a Palestinian forced on a suicide mission in Tel Aviv to redeem his father’s honor, is given a second chance when the fuse on his explosive vest fails to detonate. Forced to spend the weekend in Tel Aviv awaiting its repair, Terek must live amongst the people he was planning to kill. To his surprise he connects with several Israelis on the outskirts of society, including the beautiful Keren, who has cut off contact with her Orthodox family and upbringing. ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction Hollywood Movie Reviews: ZMD has one kick ass pre-credit opening scene that had me completely psyched for the rest of the film. It boasts some impressive effects, particularly for a film with a slim budget. I don't want to give away any of the juicy, gory scenes, but I will tell you that there are some glorious moments involving skin ripping, shooting, stabbing, and even one shocking and hilarious hit and run. Instead of the regular cookie cutter characters you see in most horror films, ZMD features a diverse group of individuals that are actually interesting. The local restaurant is run by an Iranian man, who's American born daughter Frida has returned home from Princeton.
Frida is conflicted with her role in the world, not only because of her father, who begs her to embrace her Iranian heritage, but also an air headed boyfriend who keeps calling her an Iraqi. In a hilarious conversation between Frida and her boyfriend, the phrases "There is NORWAY, you are getting in these panties" and "Kuwait a second" are uttered. Oh yes, he goes there. Then there is the gay couple; Tom and Lance, who have come to Port Gamble so that Tom can finally "come out" to his mother. The two deliver some of the film's best lines. There is a mayor with serious old fashion attitudes, who's closest acquaintance is the local preacher who delivers fire and brimstone sermons. In direct contrast to the mayor is the local female high school teacher who is running against him in the upcoming election. Finally there is the proudly right-wing father with an alcoholic wife, and an awkward drama student son. There are more than a few small-minded people in the town of Port Gamble. Many of the locals are suspicious of foreigners and fear homosexuals. Even the local news suggests terrorists for the cause of the zombie outbreak. So needless to say, there is a crapload of material to work with. The gay couple, played by Doug Fahl and Cooper Hopkins are outstanding and shine in every scene they are in. Janette Armand is also excellent as Frida. Ali Hamedani who plays Frida's father is perfect in his role, and is actually the father of the director. Russell Hodgkinson is delightfully amusing, and unlikable as the right-wing dad. Some of the acting from the more minor characters is iffy, but it doesn't hurt the overall feel of the film. ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction is well-paced, high energy, gory, clever, and funny as hell. It entertained me from beginning to end. Highly Recommended!

Kill Theory was originally slated for a theatrical release from Lionsgate Films, and now has a DVD and theatrical release in Russia. It absolutely confuses me why a solid little slasher movie like this gets poor treatment from Lionsgate, but then again they are the same people responsible for giving the great "Midnight Meat Train" a very poor theatrical release and giving the god-awful "Disaster Movie" a wide theatrical release. Kill Theory has great production values and doesn't look cheap at all, and if gone to theaters, would have probably done pretty good - so Lionsgate screwed themselves over, again! Kelly Palmer, first-time screenwriter, has proved to have writing talent with this movie and he did a very good job. The acting from the cast was solid, and I particularly loved Teddy Dunn's performance in the movie - he stood out to me. Horror stars Agnes Bruckner (Vacancy 2), Kevin Gage (Amusement) and Taryn Manning (The Breed) give solid performances also, as well as the rest of the cast. The movie also has some pretty solid death scenes (which are brutal) and it feels like a slasher movie with guns at times. My favorite kill would have to be the "ownage" by the shovel - great kill! The death order is very unpredictable also, and the ending was shocking. Does everyone die? Do they beat the killer? Does the lead die? Does the least-likely character live? All I can say is, I was shocked. The movie also had a "Saw" feel to it, with the killer communicating via tapes, mentioning survival, using traps and such. I think it's safe to say this was probably inspired by Saw somehow, but it's not a rip-off, unlike the horrible "Are You Scared?" (2006). The only things that I didn't really like about Kill Theory was the fact that Daniel Franzese (Mean Girls, Cruel World) character was incredibly annoying in this movie with his whining and screaming, and the fact that Carly Pope (Yeti: Curse of The Snow Demon) and Edwin Hodge (Mandy Lane) are only featured in photograph/newspaper clippings and don't have an actual roles - disappointing.

Can Abby defeat the threats of Skull City and rescue Megan or are they doomed like all the other tourists before them Brian Pulido Discusses The Graves : Director Brian Pulido didn't have to look much farther than practically his own backyard when he was seeking inspiration for his next horror project. He found that the state of Arizona provided the right landscape to create a chilling supernatural journey with his telling of The Graves. "The story of The Graves is a mélange of things that interest me," explained Pulido. "I like to visit weird kitschy places in Arizona, and we found this place called Vulture Mines. It just stuck with me. I immediately thought this would be a great location for a movie, so it inspired me to write The Graves. Instead of six or seven twenty-year-olds, I was more interested in telling a story of these two sisters, which seemed to be a little different than what we've seen recently for horror film trends," Pulido added.
Since Pulido was responsible for both writing and directing The Graves, I asked him to give us a little insight into his pair of protagonists and what we can expect to see happen to them in the film. Pulido said, "Meg and Abby Graves see themselves as monster slayers of sorts. They're looking for trouble; you could even say they're attracted to it. Beyond the monsters and the supernatural, we also have one sister on a journey to step outside of the shadow of the other, so it's also about women finding their power. The Graves Hollywood Movie Reviews : I went to see this with my mom because first off, it takes place in our own home state and secondly, we've associated with a couple of people making the movie. When it first began, I wasn't impressed. The girls recording each other was making me nauseous and wary of the quality of film. It was only the for a little bit, thank goodness. Once we got through that rocky start, it was a fantastic movie with lines from the killers that'll have you snorting in laughter, believable and lovable heroines, a mad preacher who's voice still gives me goosebumps (in a good way), and a location that made me giggle cause I've seen it :P. When the source of all the trouble was finally revealed, I thought it was kind of silly but the very ending of the movie wrapped it up in such an entertaining package that it became kind of cool. I loved this movie and both my mother and I will be owning it when it comes out on DVD. Well worth seeing at least once if you're a blood and gore horror movie fan. Plus, it's got Bill Mosley in it and well, who plays a psychotic killer better than him?

French Film Story : Four men climb a steep, icy, almost vertical rock, where one false move will plunge them 3,000 feet to instant death. This situation can't be anything other than gripping. The German mountain climbing film, "North Face," more than delivers on the excitement and terror of this existential flirtation with one's own mortality. Where it falters is trying to link this event to Nazi-era politics and a feeble love story.
North Face French Movie Reviews: I have seen a lot of climbing movies and this one tops them all. The climbing scenes are remarkable- it will keep you on the edge of your seat! To see these guys climbing thousands of feet up on this face with the old equipment is incredible, and you feel like you are actually there with the amazing cinematography. It left me asking, "how in the world did they film that?!" It is an astonishing true story. If you don't know about it, do yourself a favor and watch the movie before reading about it. Why don't they make more movies like this?? Hollywood needs to learn a lesson…tell a true story, be faithful to it, and don't rely on CGI and special effects. The reaction this film got at the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in Pusan, South Korea, was better than any of the other big movies there. This movie gets a 10 out of 10 from me. It is a harsh story about Germany in the 30s as the Nazis were rising and wishing to prove to the world that they were the best. The tale is about two German men who take on a very difficult climb. The story is quite riveting, and human. Full of laughs, tragedy, and ... a little bit of a love story. Although the movie starts a little slowly, it really picks up about one third the way in. The main characters (the two mountain climbers and the one female love interest) are all solid actors, well directed, and well casted. The director did a great job at capturing the climb. Everything was so convincingly shot, it makes you wonder if they actually filmed some of it on a real mountain. I suppose they must have used CGI, but it was used so sparingly and realistically that it must be commended. The contrast between the plight of the mountain climbers and that of the rich bystanders makes the movie so much more emotionally riveting. Some people in the audience cried. This is a tragedy that must be seen. It captures humanity at its best and worst... and shows us that sometimes nature rules our lives, and that it is not forgiving.

I am not the type of guy to see a romantic comedy, but it was free and had my old favorite Danny Devito in it. I was pretty surprised by how much fun I had watching it. I walked out really happy with my choice. I'm going to bring my gal when it comes out in theaters. People were laughing pretty hard in my theater, but some of them probably worked for the movie theater that made it. That's what my wife said anyway. Kristin is really pretty and Dax Sheppard stole the movie in my book. Devito was funny, but he wasn't my favorite part. That was surprising considering how big of a fan I am of him. Anyhoo, if you want to laugh and feel better about your day I would give it a shot. Good luck! Hollywood brings yet another pointless re-assemblage of stale ideas, preposterous events, plot loopholes, and ridiculous conveniences though which one could drive a galaxy, and I don't mean the Ford version. Nothing worth mentioning, really, but for one brief restaurant scene that was truly funny for its concept, though not its execution. Girlfriend insisted so we went to the screening. Saw it for free and I was still annoyed. Will rue the lost ninety minutes on my deathbed. Being stuck in traffic with a full bladder would have been preferable. I suffered so you don't have to.

Bran Nue Dae English Film Synopsis: In this lively musical comedy-drama set in the late 1960s, Willie (Rocky McKenzie) is a sixteen-year-old living in Broome, an Aboriginal community on the western coast of Australia. Willie is an easy-going kid who doesn't ask for much from life beyond enjoying time with his friends and getting a date with Rosie (Jessica Mauboy), a pretty girl who attends the same church. Bran Nue Dae was adapted from the hit stage musical by Jimmy Chi that was a major box office success and multiple award winner in Australia during the early 1990s;the film version received its word premiere at the 2009 Melbourne Film Festival, was it received the Audience Award for Best Film. Bran Nue Dae Hollywood Movie Reviews: Bran Nue Day has its heart in the right place it just doesn't quite pull it off! Its basically a musical road movie but its just a bit too silly for my tastes. There are some good elements - it moves along nicely, there are some good performances (Jessica Mauboy for one, Ernie Dingo is OK too), reasonable songs, its bright & paints Australias Broome in an attractive light. Other parts really could have done with some work though. The Tom Budge character (he plays Missy Higgins hippie boyfriend) is a complete joke & Geoffrey Rushs character is over the top too. Some of the choreography & miming are so bad, characters pop in & out with little relevance & the finale is woeful. With all that it is a pretty reasonable excuse for a mindless popcorn movie, it thats what you are looking for, this is your film BRAN NUE DAE is an utterly delightful new musical with an Indigenous Australian cast that is a sensational showcase of Aboriginal/Islander talent. Set in Broome in NW West Australia with spectacular natural scenery, BRAN NUE DAE revels in its silliness, sense of fun, community and absolute zinger talent. It is a musical road trip set in 1969 about a funny romantic schoolboy who falls in love and discovers hilarious family truths. It also clearly shows how photogenic our Aboriginal teens are, and with young-Elvis-like Rocky Mackenzie as Willie in a screen debut with gorgeous Jessica Mauboy as the focus,
we are swept along for raucous dusty fun. It will appeal to cinema audiences as PRISCILLA did in revealing the beauty of Australian deserts and with top stars Geoffrey Rush and Magda Szubanski as key white talent in showstopper roles,the film has the broadest possible appeal. The songs are memorable and the imagery truly beautiful. BRAN NUE DAE is a tad edited down and short at 88 minutes, but that only means I wanted more. It is by turns hilarious, poignant and always visually stunning whether it be the faces or the landscape. If this is that start to a new decade in Oz film making, then I want more. No more dumb desert murder films. Lets go for fun and happiness and music music music. Ernie Dingo plays it like Uncle Remus and scores the best laughs.

Blue Valentine Hollywood Movie Synopsis: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams have announced that they will star in the new indie movie, Blue Valentine. The plot is about “a couple whose relationship is jeopardized when they find themselves in different places in their lives. As their relationship hits the rocks, they recall better days.” Pretty vague plot line, but the lead actors are enough to keep interest. Dennis Law’s “Bad Blood” is a triad movie only in the sense that there are triad stuff a’happenin’ onscreen, but let’s face it, this is a kung fu/martial arts movie, filled with crazy, intense whirlwind fights. Law has already shown a skill for the genre in previous efforts like “Fatal Contact” and “Fatal Move”, and this looks like a major step forward for him in terms of action choreography. The cast includes Simon Yam (he’s always good), Andy On (he can be okay), and a new face to me, Jiang Lui Xia. Same Same But Different English Movie Review : TORONTO -- Kate Winslet won all the accolades for her performance in "The Reader," but it was the young German actor David Kross who did equal amounts of heavy lifting as he played her boyish lover, who was later shocked to learn of her Nazi-era past. So the interest in this new German film, "Same Same But Different," which played in Toronto after its Locarno debut, was to see how he does in another lead role. The part is in many ways similar, with youthful naivete again the main spring for a story about a fateful, passionate love. Kross makes convincing a seemingly impossible innocence mixed in with youthful hijinks involving risky travel, sex and drugs. And, again, much of the time he is acting in English. The film is based on a memoir by Benjamin Pruefer, who in his early 20's traveled to Southeast Asia looking for trouble only to fall in love with a Cambodian bar girl. He paid her for sex but wound up with love as the two fell for each other. Kross and Thai actress Apinya Sakuljaroensuk play off each other wonderfully. Both are little more than kids in appearance but their characters in real life faced tremendous problems when Ben returned to Hamburg and Sreykeo discovered she was HIV-positive. The film devolves too quickly into practical matters of finding the right drugs for Sreykeo and puzzling out how to make an international relationship work as Ben seeks to do the right thing by the young woman he genuinely loves. But there is real feeling in the acting.

Ishqiya Hindi Music Review : Vishal Bhardwaj's track record as a composer has been very impressive and with "Ishqiya" he once again proves that he is not only a good filmmaker but also a brilliant musician. It is an album to watch out for - most of the songs are hummable and could go on to become chartbusters. "Ishqiya", which stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan, has four originals and three remixes. The album begins with the great composition titled "Dil to bachcha hai". Sung by the brilliant Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the song instantly strikes a chord with the listener thanks to its retro feel and soothing orchestration.
It seems to be inspired by the music of a Raj Kapoor film and the accordion is being used in a track after a long time. It is hummable and one of the best songs of the album. The remix of the song is equally appealing. In this version, the music is louder and more contemporary. However, there are no unnecessary beats or jarring sounds. Singer Clinton Cerejo pitches in with a few English lyrics. Next in line is "Ibn-e-batuta", the most ordinary of the lot. While it isn't brilliant, it's a peppy track sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Mika Singh. It doesn't appeal as much as the other songs. The number has two remixes - one is a general remix version and the other is called the nucleya remix version. Both are average. Then there is "Ab mujhe koi" in the soulful voice of Rekha Bhardwaj. There is something magical about Rekha's voice that lifts the song completely. The slow-paced track, coupled with the strumming of the guitar, the sound of the piano and drums, has a mesmerising effect on the listener.
The story takes place during one weekend in Tel-Aviv, in three main spots that lead to Carmel Market. There are three protagonists : 1. Tarek , a Palestinian youth from Nablus. 2. Katz , an embittered old fellow. 3. Keren , a 17 years old girl , who grew up in a strictly religious family , left her home to become a secular youngster. The three "heroes" are loners, driven by their past and by their inner conviction.
Tarek volunteers to be a suicide bomber and travels from Tulkarem to Tel Aviv, planning to explode himself in the Carmel Market on a busy Saturday morning.
