Ian McKellen says the studio is eyeing a January start date on the production of The Hobbit.

Sir Ian McKellen told The Bolton News that filming on the long-awaited prequel The Hobbit should start in the new year. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as the wizard Gandalf.

"The aim is to start filming in January," he said.

Recently, we reported that British actor Martin Freeman has been in talks to portray Bilbo Baggins.

The Hobbit centers on Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, who journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarfs to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

The Hobbit is in development and stars Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Doug Jones.
