UPDATE: 10/5/10 5:30 PM PST Both Heat Vision Blog and Deadline New York had a chance to speak with Zack Snyder following the news. Here's what he told Deadline New York about the project, saying he'll start work on the movie right after he finishes post-production on his upcoming movie Sucker Punch:

"I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one. It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Christopher Nolan have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome. I'll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it."

Here's what he told Heat Vision Blog, saying they will work on the script some more before moving forward:

"In the initial meetings, he's been super amzaingly smart and also amazingly kind, filmmaker-to-filmmaker," he said of Nolan. "I have great respect for him. The process has been amazing so far, and it looks like nothing but pluses."

Snyder first met with Nolan about a month ago, and while he didn't do any dog-and-pony show, "I defintely expressed my love for the character and interest in seeing him treated right."

Added Snyder: "The character deserves to be loved. It's his time"

Original Story: Filmmaker Zack Snyder has been confirmed as the director of Warner Bros.' new Superman movie, according to Heat Vision Blog.

Negotiations between the studio and Zack Snyder started today. Snyder was one of the directors reported to be on the studio's short list of potential candidates. Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, Duncan Jones and Darren Aronofsky were the other directors wanted by Warner Bros. for the project.

It wasn't clear when production would begin on the movie, although it is noted that Warner Bros. does need to get started by 2011, or else some of the rights to Superman would revert back to the estates of creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.

David S. Goyer wrote the script which Zack Snyder will direct from. It is rumored that General Zod will be the villain of this new movie.

Superman comes to theaters in 2012. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.
