Plot Summary:
Award-winning filmmaker Jorge W. Atalla (In Cane for Life/A Vida em Cana) brings Sequestro (Kidnapping), a powerful Brazilian documentary which follows the Anti Kidnapping Division of the São Paulo police force (Divisão Anti-Sequestro aka DAS) from 2005 until 2009 when kidnapping was at its boom. Go undercover with investigators as they are given unprecedented access and captured on camera for the first-time when kidnappers, police, and victims come together in Latin America's largest city.
During four years a film crew followed the convert operations of the Sao Paulo Anti Kidnap Police Force, an elite group formed of only a handful of men. Kidnappers, victims, police, all intertwine in a action based documentary. Never before seen footage of police work, and stories never heard before of the horror of captivity are shown for the first time.

Movie Synopsis:
Sequestro follows the day by day of five elite police units of the São Paulo Anti Kidnapping Division (DAS). Formed of only 80 trustworthy men, to police a city of 18 million people, these men are divided into units of seven officers with one captain. Between 2005 until May of 2009, these units allowed a film crew to follow ALL their investigations and tactics for the first time since the creation of the Division in 2000. Created in 2000 when kidnapping was at its boom in São Paulo with over 500 official cases and more that an estimated 2000, the Anti Kidnapping Division was able to fight crime reducing it to under 70 cases in 2009.

With no control over the situations encountered, the filmmakers agreed that: 1. There would be no "acting" by police in the film. 2. There could be NO interference of the crew with the police work. 3. The crew had to follow strict rules and orders from the officers. 4. The police would not be responsible for the well-being of the film crew. 5. The filmmakers could shoot everything but all footage had to be first reviewed by the police to ensure nothing would compromise investigations.

If the filmmakers would agree to these simple rules, they were "in".

The beginning of the film shows the relationship between the political kidnappings that began in the 1980's to raise money to finance Latin America's leftist guerrillas and how these kidnappings extended until 2001 and influenced Brazilian criminals into migrating into kidnapping.

The following cases of the São Paulo Anti Kidnapping Division are covered in the film: a 14 year old kidnapped by members of São Paulo's organized crime cartel PCC (First Command of the Capital); the kidnapper had the boy handcuffed in his own home while his children were watching TV - an 82 year old man held in captivity for over 40 days - a six year old child, kidnapped by her own nanny, who planned to kill the girl after receiving the rescue payment - never seen before footage of a rescue payment operation - a phone negotiation between a son and kidnappers with his father in captivity and a unique interview in Argentina with Chilean ex-members of the Revolutionary Leftist Movement of Chile, held prisoners for 18 years after the unsuccessful kidnap attempt of Brazilian supermarket mogul Abilio Diniz.
Victims also speak for the first time of the tragedy of their lives in captivity and the hardships they encounter with life after abduction and "freedom" they never had again.
