Todd Phillips Talks John Belushi Biopic
September 3rd, 2010
We reported a few weeks ago that The Hangover director Todd Phillips is producing a new Untitled John Belushi Project based on the life of the late comedian. MTV Movies Blog spoke to Todd Phillips, who revealed some details on this biopic about the popular Saturday Night Live cast member and comedic film star who overdosed on heroine. Here's an excerpt from the site's interview:
"Our goal is not to do a traditional biopic approach with it that people expect, whether you're talking about Walk the Line or Ray. All good movies, but our goal is not to make that typical biopic. We want to make a movie that, if John Belushi saw it, he would be happy that it captured his spirit. Sometimes I feel that they don't entirely capture the spirit of the person they're about. Our goal is to capture the spirit of Belushi, not necessarily make a straight-ahead biopic."
The Pursuit of Happyness screenwriter Steve Conrad is writing the movie, but the project isn't even that far along yet, as Phillips revealed Steve Conrad is only working on the treatment right now. Not the actual script. Todd Phillips also said that they weren't sure who would play John Belushi at this point:
"It's about nailing the script down at this point. If it's a new face or if it's someone people are familiar with, we haven't figured that out yet. It's not even so much about nailing down the script as the renegade approach to a renegade actor."
We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on this Untitled John Belushi Project as soon as we have more information.
Untitled John Belushi Project comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Todd Phillips.
