Movie Review:
When I first saw a trailer for The Dilemma I found myself feeling something I hadn’t felt for quite a long time… excitement about a comedy being released. However, after viewing The Dilemma I found myself realizing why director, Ron Howard (Angels & Demons, Frost/Nixon) hasn’t attempted comedy since The Grinch, way back in 2000. He may be a great director, but he still doesn’t quite have a handle on comedy.

To Tell The Truth, Or Not Tell The Truth - The Plot Of The Dilemma.
Story wise, The Dilemma shows potential. Ronny Valentine (Vince Vaughn – Couples Retreat, Four Holidays) is best mates and business partners with Nick Brannen (Kevin James – Grown Ups, Paul Blart: Mall Cop). Life couldn’t be better for the close friends, they are working on a major project that will ensure the success of their business, Ronny is working out the best way to propose to the love of his life, Beth (Jennifer Connelly – What’s Wrong With Virginia, Creation) and Nick is happily married to Geneva (Winona Ryder – Black Swan, Stay Cool)… or is he? Because as Ronny soon discovers Geneva is having an affair with Zip (Channing Tatum – Dear John, G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra). Now Ronny is faced with a dilemma, does he tell his mate and risk losing out on their business deal or does he just stay silent.

The one thing that is for sure is that the downfalls of The Dilemma are certainly not the cast’s fault. It may come as a surprise to many but Vince Vaughn certainly shines here, he puts in one of the best performances of his career while Kevin James will silence his critics by showing he can certainly pull off a semi-serious role. And of course Jennifer Connelly once again puts in a fine effort while it’s good to see Wynona Ryder back up her Black Swan performance with another role that has real bite to it. Even Channing Tatum seems to be maturing as an actor and relishes the role of Zip, however, they are all overshadowed in the comedy light by Queen Latifah (Just Wright, Valentine’s Day) who seems to lap up every second of her role.

The Dilemma could easily have been a great film, but some sloppy work by Loeb and Howard just results in the film becoming a non-event, which is a shame when you look at some of the fine efforts put in by the actors involved. Some moments will make you laugh, some will make you cry yet The Dilemma won’t ever fully satisfy you. Could’ve been great… but unfortunately doesn’t quite make the grade
