Movie Plot Summary:
Nida is a single mother who takes care of her anti-social son who has locked himself in his room for five years. The only way to communicate with her son is to write on a piece of paper and slip it under the door. But, when outsiders start to get curious about what is going on behind the door of her son’s room, a series of terrible events starts to happen.
Movie Who R U Review:
Experienced any good scare at the cinema lately? Couldn’t find any? I don’t blame you as Halloween season is still far away. Even then, Hollywood horror flick is often over-rated. Now, there is a new horror thriller in town from Thailand. So I’m grateful to watch Haunted Room: Who R U at a special screening, thanks to RAM Entertainment.
Haunted Room, also known in Thai as Kria Nai Hong (literally means who are you), is based on a true story and starring veteran television actress Sinjai Plengpanich. She plays as Nida, a vendor of porn DVDs whose son has locked himself up in his room for five years to play video games.
Nida’s son, Ton, isolated himself due to suffering from anti-social syndrome, also known in Japanese as Hikkikomori. Ton would threaten to commit suicide if she forces him out of the room. Thus, this reduces the means of communication between the mother and her invisible son to notes slipped under the closed door.
Basically, the story revolves around the people whose lives intertwined with Ton and offers an insight into the psychological condition suffered by Ton. But with so many people curious about Ton and his mysterious lifestyle, it did not take long for someone to cross the line and unleash the horrors that lie within.
Haunted Room alternates between murky, suggestive passages of screaming, blood and gore horror show. It’s efficient when it needs to be. The film stands out from most Thai horrors as it plays with shocks but not with actual fear. For major part of the story, the movie rely on objects and sound effect to give us the heart attack.
So if you are wondering if there is any ghost involved at all, be on alert towards the end, which is also the most climatic part of the film. Overall, I give it a 3 out of 5 stars by using Shutter, the best Thai horror movie in my opinion, as the benchmark.
The movie opens in Malaysia on 15th April 2010. If you are a horror fan, do give this movie a go while you anticipate the latest Hollywood blockbusters to hit the theater this summer. In the mean time, check out the video trailer below.
