Movie Plot Summary:
Parole officer Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro) has only a few weeks left before retirement and wishes to finish out the cases he's been assigned. One such case is that of Gerald "Stone" Creeson (Edward Norton), a convicted arsonist who is up for parole. Jack is initially reluctant to indulge Stone in the coarse banter he wishes to pursue and feels little sympathy for the prisoner's pleads for an early release. Seeing little hope in convincing Jack himself, Stone arranges for his wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich) to seduce the officer, but motives and intentions steadily blur amidst the passions and buried secrets of the corrupted players in this deadly game of deception.
The Story :
Stone is an upcoming film directed by John Curran. The film's plot will concern a convicted arsonist (Norton) who tries to manipulate his way out of prison by having his wife (Jovovich) seduce his parole officer (De Niro) before eventually playing dangerous psychological games with him.
Joan arrives at Cartagena, but Jack is not there. She meets with Ira at an old military fortress across the bay from her hotel, and the exchange of the map for Elaine is made successfully. As Joan and Elaine attempt to leave, they are stopped by a volley of machine gun fire. Suddenly, Jack appears, along with Zolo and his men who found him at the hotel and captured him. Zolo then proceeds to set the map aflame before the shocked eyes of Ira, knowing it is now worthless. Zolo demands to know where the emerald is, but Joan tells him that they found nothing when they looked for it. He then proceeds to drag Joan to a small moat full of crocodiles, where he cuts her hand and uses the blood to entice the crocodiles to come closer. To save Joan, Jack reveals that he still has El Corazon and surrenders it to Zolo. However, before he can celebrate his victory further, El Corazon is swallowed by one of the crocodiles, who also bites off Zolo's hand in the process. As a furious gun battle between Zolo's soldiers and Ira's gang takes place, Joan and Elaine take the opportunity to dash for safety, but they are pursued by a enraged Zolo. As Ira and his men make their escape, leaving Ralph behind, Jack spots the crocodile who swallowed the emerald heading over one of the walls of the fortress and tries to stop it from escaping. He has his grip on the crocodile's tail when he sees that Joan is in trouble with Zolo, who is trying to kill her. Jack lets go of the crocodile and scales a rock wall to reach her, though Joan has managed to fight Zolo off herself. Zolo is killed when he falls into Ira's pit of pet crocodiles, Ira and his men escape, and Ralph is left behind as the authorities arrive. After a kiss, Jack dives into the water to chase the crocodile, leaving Joan behind with her sister.
Sometime later, Joan is shown in New York, delivering another completed manuscript based on her experiences to her publisher, Gloria (Holland Taylor), who is positive it will be her best seller yet and declares that Joan is now "a world class hopeless romantic". Still thinking of Jack, Joan quietly disagrees and calls herself "a hopeful romantic" Returning home, she finds Jack - wearing crocodile skin boots - waiting for her in a sailboat he purchased with the proceeds of El Corazon. It turns out Jack managed to catch the crocodile, who suffered "a fatal case of indigestion" from swallowing the gem. The film ends with Jack and Joan kissing on the deck of the Angelina, named for Joan's fictional heroine, as the trailer the boat rests on drives off into the streets of New York
Users Reviews:
I went to see Stone earlier today for an advance screening as Ed Norton is promoting the film at my school next week. Honestly I had absolutely no idea what this film was about going in. The marketing just flew over my head I suppose. I just knew who was acting in it.
Stone centers around Jack Marby(played by Bobby D, a welcome sight that he isn't in a Meet the... movie), a parole board officer who does preliminary interviews on convicts who are approaching their hearings. His character has a dark past we're alluded to in an all to short opening flashback, and he is something of a dead individual who is absolutely done dealing with people lying and manipulating him to get the parole board to let them go. We meet him as he nears retirement and wraps up his last inmates.
This last inmate is convicted arsonist "Stone" played by Ed Norton who is trying to manipulate Jack into letting him free, even if it means having his gorgeous wife Lucette (Milla Jovovich) pull some strings from the outside.
What follows is a great character drama, and the acting in it is phenomenal. It really is. Milla Jovovich stands out the most I think with her character who has a lot to do. I'd personally give her an Oscar nod. Truly though, this is some great acting. De Niro is perfect as the strung out officer, and Norton plays the convict expertly who can express a wide range of emotions and display many motivations.
My complaint with the film is that the audience is left wanting more from the story, and not in a good way. We have a short opening flashback of Jack, which shows a disturbed and violent man, that I an all the others who saw it thoroughly enjoyed. But they never came back to that. It presented some interesting back story and hinted a lot, but there is no pay off.
That being said, that is my only complaint. I think that the acting here was truly great, and the story might be a bit straightforward, was still thoughtful and pensive and entertaining to watch unfold.
I had no expectations, but I thought it was very well done. There was also great editing and sound design, which you'll notice early on.
All in all, a good character piece that carries a weak story that leaves you wanting more. There is a lot to enjoy and take in as Lucetta and Stone work on getting him out of prison. Very solid film. Not perfect, but solid.
