Korea Republic are the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2010 champions for the first time!
The Koreans defeated Japan in a thrilling final that needed a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
It was a match that produced six goals in the 90 minutes of regulation time. Korea took an early lead in the 6th minute through Lee Jungeun but Japan replied quickly through Hikaru Naomoto five minutes later.
Then Yoko Tanaka gave the Japanese the lead in the 17th minute only to see it wiped out by Korean captain Kim Areum in added time of the first half. Chika Kato made 3-2 in Japan's favor 12 minutes into the second half.
Just when it looked like they were on the way to becoming champions, Korea equalized. A minute after coming on as a substitute, Lee So Dam scored in the 79th minute to tie the match at 3-3.
Both teams were unable to break the deadlock even after 30 minutes of extra time, and the winner had to be decided in a penalty shootout.
With the score tied at 4-4 after five kicks, it went to sudden-death. Heartbreak for Japan when Muratmasu hit the crossbar, and Selgi scored.
It's a horrible way to lose a football match but a winner has to be decided.
Korea Republic are champions for 2010!
