Movie Review :
Pandiraj’s debut directorial ‘Pasanga’ was worthy ennobling it as a trendsetting showpiece in the pages of Tamil cinema. Obviously at those times, when Tamil cinema was witnessing the prototyped movies of usual formulas repeated, the filmmaker surprised the audiences with a rhetorically creative writing.
Although ‘Vamsam’ boasts of such appreciations, it doesn’t stand out an exceptional flick as it reminiscences the yesteryear films based on nativity. Needless to mention, films set in backdrops of villages goes inclusive of romance between guy and gal of different communities or families of poles apart. Annoying stunts, a flashback revealing the reason behind hostilities, etc…
This film travels on similar pattern as Pandiraj tries specifying the pragmatic scenarios village festival of 11 different lineages celebrating their festival. It’s worth praising Pandiraj for his earnest efforts of presenting these panoramas. Except these factors, the film doesn’t boast off anything else in exception.
Vamsam follows the story of 3 people belonging to different lineages – Anbarasu (Arulnidhi), Malar (Sunaina) and Nanjundan (Jayaprakash). It’s about a drama that involves romance, enmity between these characters and settling scores.
Debutant Arulnidhi looks pleasant with his presence. His highlighting USP is that he doesn’t overreact to sequences. Be his action sequences or the way he trips his foot, he is at his best. Actress Sunaina surprises with her graceful performance and she’s far beyond excellence when compared to her previous films. Jayaprakash is ne plus ultra as he overshadows the other performance. Ganja Karuppu’s comedy tracks are okay.
Musical score by Taj Noor is below average. Being A.R. Rahman’s associate, he tries to pull maestro’s traits over background scoring. Mahesh Muthusamy’s cinematography is extraordinary and his involvement with Mysskin has affected his way of handling camera in a unique way (continuous movement of camera without any cuts).
Pandiraj impresses with few creative aspects like whirlwind, cell phone towers and way of communicating. Especially, the assassination drama is more realistic and the filmmaker has portrayed the exact scenario that often happens in few villages. But when it gets repeated often, the audiences tend to get restless.
On the whole, ‘Vamsam’ can be watched once without expectations. The first half is enjoyable while the latter part lacks substantiality in places and the climax is more predictable.
