The Living Wake Movie Synopsis:
A self-proclaimed artist and genius who has elevated his drab existence into a personal mythology organizes his final party, a living wake, in director Sol Tryon's absurdist black comedy. K. Roth Binew (Mike O'Connell) is about to live his last day. Abandoned by his father (Jim Gaffigan) as a young lad, Binew was raised by his nanny, Marla (Diane Kagan), and gradually grew to gain an appreciation for the arts. Though he would personally never complete a single work of art, he nevertheless considers himself an artist and has recently been told by his doctor that he will shortly expire of some mysterious, unnamed disease. Upon being informed of his dire situation, Binew boards his rickshaw and requests that his biographer and driver, Mills Joaquin (Jesse Eisenberg), transport him around town so that he may make his final arrangements. As the day wears on, Binew and Joaquin visit the local "liquirsmith" to procure spirits, arrange a Viking-style funeral for the eccentric "artist," and steal a goat for a personal picnic. Later, after Binew is attacked by his neighbor (Eddie Pepitone) and has his attempt to donate books at the local library refused, he hands out invitations to his final party. It is there that Binew will perform a short piece for his audience, and summarily drop dead on the spot.

The Living Wake Plot Summary:
“The Living Wake” chronicles the final day in the life of self proclaimed artist and genius, K. Roth Binew. It begins in the morning. Binew wakes up and dresses in his finest suit. He leaves his boarding house and sets out to hand out invitations to his final party, a living wake. His first encounter is with his neighbor and arch-enemy, Reginald. As a gesture of reconciliation, Binew offers Reginald an invitation. Reginald takes it begrudgingly. Mills Joquin, Binew’s best friend and biographer, picks up Binew in a bicycle powered rickshaw. The two set off on their adventure. Throughout the day Binew and Joquin will be on the rickshaw, attempting to probe the great mysteries of life while fulfilling Binew most urgent errands.
First on the list is a trip to the liquor store. Binew likes his drink and in order to ensure a good day Binew must have his favorite bourbon. Having secured his bourbon he then heads to the recreation park where he will exercise one final time. From there Binew and Mills go the mortuary to plan for Binew’s burial. A memorial service is in progress and the raffish duo cause a scene.
The next section of the film centers around a picnic that Binew has arranged with the great love of his life, his former nanny, Marla. In preparation for the picnic Binew must first steal a goat from a farmer. He enlists Mills as his decoy and secures the goat. They then cook the goat on a stake, intoning a prayer to the gods as they do so. Having cooked the goat, Binew heads to the site of the picnic. There, he woos his former nanny. He steals a long awaited kiss from her but in the end realizes that carnal love is more desirable than his courtly affections. He leaves his nanny behind in favor of the easy comforts of the prostitute. He visits the prostitute, swindles her, and continues casually on his journey. His adventure is disrupted, however by his arch-enemy Reginald, who runs Joquin and Binew off the road with his car. Binew brushes himself off and swears eternal revenge.
The next portion of the film involves Binew’s attempt to secure his artistic legacy. This takes him to the library where he attempts to donate his books. The librarian refuses him and this sends Binew into mild depression. Desperate to discover if anyone who will remember him in the future, Binew visits a psychic. The psychic informs him that she sees nothing in his future other than imminent death.
Following the psychic’s den, Binew discovers that Mills’ watch has broken. In order to keep to their schedule they must get a new watch at the clockshop. When Binew finds out the actual time, he faints, grief stricken by the little time he has left. From here Binew visits his family in an attempt to reconcile differences, but they treat him only with scorn. Binew then drowns his sorrows in his favorite watering hole the “Shifty Mick”, where he muses about the futility of life. Following the bar, Binew asks Mills if he might have some time alone before the wake. He walks through a cemetery and sings a contemplative existential ballad, “I’ve Never”.
The final portion of the film takes place at the wake of K. Roth Binew. A wooden stage has been erected in an open field. Binew’s friends and enemies have gathered to witness Binew’s final spectacle. He treats them to a variety of song, dance and theater. Binew’s show is interrupted by the appearance of his father, who Binew hasn’t seen since he was a boy. Binew addresses his father while on stage, asking him to reveal the meaning of life. He tells Binew that the meaning of life is not something that can be explained. He encourages Binew to be his own strange, beautiful self until his final moment. He also alerts him that he is not flesh and blood, but a ghost. Binew is embarrassed at first, having carried on with an apparition in front of so many people. He quickly recovers, however, accepting the words his ghost father has bestowed. In his final minutes, Binew vows that he will live life to the fullest. He will greet death with gusto rather than cower in fear. He takes a baton and leads the wake procession in his final song, “Dressed for Death”. Those present follow Binew as he marches across the field singing. Binew marches right up to his coffin and jumps inside. He concludes his triumphant song, and then drops dead. The wake attendees pay their final respects. They then leave. All but Mills remains. Binew’s, ever patient, ever loyal best friend, Mills Joquin takes Binew’s body to a lake. He pushes the coffin out into the water and lights a match. Mills watches as the boat is engulfed in flames.
