Writer/director Nicole Holofcener's latest film, Please Give deals with the dilemma of having money and feeling guilty about it. A timely subject matter - for some - during these days of economic hardship for so many, the film is vaguely reminiscent of Holofcener's last film, Friends with Money, which also starred Catherine Keener. Holofcener is one of few writer/directors that writes intimately about modern women's hectic lives and the petite quandaries they face daily. Please Give, also starring Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt, has plenty of moments of levity despite its issues of life and death, friendship and loneliness, marriage and infidelity. Holofcener, who broke into film in 1996 with her well-received feature, Walking and Talking, plans to veer away from the comforts of everyday life for her next project, Every Secret Thing, a dark mystery-thriller based on the book by Laura Lippman.

Your last film also dealt with issues of money and guilt. Is this a theme that is prominent in your life and what appeals to you about this theme?
After I finished the script I realized what the film was about. That is when I said, 'Oh, I guess this is still interesting to me.' I don't plan what I am going to write about. I write about what is important to me and then I see it later. I also realized this was about a female character making her apartment bigger and the other movie (Friends with Money) was about making her house bigger. But I decided that was ok. I guess these are issues that are very permanent in my life. Not that I dwell on them but I see a disparity between my friends' income and mine and it's hard for me to go with the flow.
