Reviews Overviews

A U.S. marshal (Kate Beckinsale), the only one assigned to Antarctica, must investigate a murder there within three days before the arctic winter begins. She crosses paths with a U.N. operative (Gabriel Macht), also investigating the murder. She must chases down suspects and finds more murders. Early in the story, Steko is attacked by the killer and left for dead in a storm. She saves herself but loses two fingers due to severe cold-related injuries.
The only U.S. Marshal assigned to Antarctica, Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) will soon leave the harsh environment behind for good; in three days, the sun will set and the Amundsen-Scott Research Station will shut down for the long winter. When a body is discovered out on the open ice, Carrie's investigation into the continent's first homicide plunges her deep into a mystery that may cost her her own life.
The Antarctic mystery/thriller Whiteout starring Kate Beckinsale has finally started to get a little bit of traction. It must be pretty slippery out there with all that ice and stuff. Seriously, though, the movie has been in development for what seems like forever. The studio made a big deal out of it at the 2008 Comic-Con but it was nigh invisible at the most recent one. This despite the fact it's scheduled to hit theaters on September 11. The lack of a major promotional push by the studio has led to speculation that there's something wrong with the movie.
After two years stationed at Antarctica's South Pole research base, lone U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) is as anxious as anyone to be going home. She's turned in her resignation and is counting the hours and minutes to the last plane out. But three days before departure, a body turns up on the ice and Carrie is immediately thrust into Antarctica's first murder investigation. As the death toll mounts, the mystery deepens with shifting loyalties, deadly whiteouts, and a relentless killer who will stop at nothing to protect a secret buried for over sixty years. Now with everyone around her packing up and getting out, Carrie must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into six months of darkness and she is stranded with the killer on a land where nothing comes in and no one gets out.
Whiteout has been one of the most weirdly under-publicized movies of the year. Now, finally, the first full trailer has been released, and it looks like there's a bit more to the story than had first appeared.
An atmospheric murder mystery set in Antarctica, Whiteout stars Kate Beckinsale as a lone U.S. Marshal who has just three days to solve the continent's first murder before darkness falls. Now we see that what sets events in motion is the discovery of "something big" under the ice. This definitely ratchets up the suspense a notch or two.
