MGM announced earlier this month that it plans to have James Bond 23 in theaters by November of 2012, with a brand new 007 adventure coming every other year after that. Since this news broke, there has been much speculation about Daniel Craig's return to the franchise. As he is booked to appear in all three chapters of The Millinium Trilogy for the foreseeable future, the first of which, titled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is now in production. It is unclear if Craig will take a break sometime between these three movies to lens James Bond 23, or if he will depart from the series altogether.
Craig is still signed onto play Bond in at least three more 007 adventures. But because of MGM's financial troubles, the actor may not be able to abide by his contract. It is quite possible that MGM will hire a new, perhaps younger, James Bond for the next installment, and then have Craig return in subsequent sequels. Co-star Jeffrey Wright, who has played American CIA agent and friend of Bond Felix Leiter in both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, doesn't feel that is the case, though. When asked if the two actors would be reuniting on the set of James Bond 23, Wright had this to say (via MI6):
"Things seem to be moving in the right direction, although sideways at times. It seems to be heading toward some resolution."
We'll be sure to keep you updated as James Bond 23 moves closer to production, especially if and when Daniel Craig's return is made official.
James Bond 23 is in development and stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.
