NEWYORK: Aug 27: Indian tennis player Sania Mirza thrashed Russia's Elina Bovina in the second round of US Open qualifying event on Thursday, Aug 26.
Sania, ranked 160th, defeated Elina Bovina (6-3, 6-3) in one hour and 19 minutes to advance to the third and final round. The final round win will help Sania to play for the women's singles main draw of the US Open.
Sania's low ranking forced her to go through the qualifiers of a Grand Slam for the first time after her breakthrough year at Australian Open in 2005. In the final round she will face Columbia's Catalina Castano, ranked 188th in the world.
