David Heim and a room in his trailer where more than 50 cats were found
One of the more unusual arrests involves a man who allegedly abandoned more than 50 cats at his trailer home in Des Plaines.
His name is David Heim, 56, and he lived in a trailer on the 7500 block of Elmhurst Road in Des Plaines.
Cook County Sheriff's investigators say he and a roommate abandoned the cats after they were threatened with eviction and decided to move out of the trailer. A neighborhod noticed they were gone and called police t report the animals were not being cared for.
Police found cats and kittens everywhere in the trailer including within the walls and ceiling panel. There There were also several dead cat carcasses lying throughout the trailer.
When he was arrested, Heim told investigators the smell in the trailer was so bad that he and his roommate slept outside at night. He saidhe moved into the trailer with about 25 cats two years ago and they multiplied. Police also removed a rabbit, a snake and several dead turtles.
Heim is charged with 53 misdemeanor counts of cruel treatment of animals.
