Movie Plot Summary:

Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named "Dren", the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

Synopsis :
I usually dig on Vincenzo Natali's work (although I did eject Cypher halfway through - was hating on it big time - life's too short) so it was with some anticipation that I attended a screening of the dude's newest flick SPLICE. I came out of it alive and well, too bad I was hoping to stroll on out a destroyed man.
Although derivative of a bunch of other films (Species in particular comes to mind), SPLICE was engaging enough to deliver a compelling buck and half of horror/sci fi schlock. The pacing was effortless, it had lots of good ideas, was sexually deviant (old fashion rape and quasi incest - yeehaw) and the themes brought up were interesting.

I particularly dug the mother-daughter thing Polley had with the creature. The ups and down of that relationship had me by the couillons. And the father, daughter, lover, f*cker thing that Brody had with the she-bitch was groovy as well. The flick was not afraid to thread warped territory that's for sure and I respected that. Visually it was very classic, nothing special but it got the job done, no harm, no foul. To be honest, I expected a bit more from Natali (the imagery in Cube was nuts) but hey what the f*ck do I know...last I checked I know four things, Jack and Shit and Jack and Coke. Nough said. Big props to Ace of Spades effects house KNB for their standout and mucho credible creature.
Sexy, scary and fairly original, the PMS inclined beastie often elevated the movie to a higher level of f*ck yeah. Add to that competent performances by Polley and Brody's unique hair cut, Delphine Chanéac really owning her role as the oddball creation and some random moments of potent tension and you get a decent genre offering.Alas, this one went limp noodle when it came to not pushing its themes and ideas far enough. There was something there no doubt but I craved a more fleshed out exploration of it. Also what was up with that useless, mop looking, brother character? Like really? He was only there to give Vidal Sasson a bad name and be responsible for an obvious incoming plot turn. I could've EASILY went without that role in the film. Moreover, the characters often acted in illogical ways to either create drama or force the narrative to go in the direction it needed to go. That really annoyed me. Finally, the whole was fairly predictable as to its chain of events. I pretty much second guessed the whole thing - not good. So all in all, SPLICE was a flawed yet entertaining movie with mucho strong special effects. You gonna splice with this SPLICE or tell it to splice off?

Movle Reviews :
SPLICE is to AVATAR (2009) as intellectually and uniquely alien as to action, blockbuster extravaganza. For all the dazzling visual effects of AVATAR, SPLICE goes beyond and enters the genuine sci fi realm of the hard core mental and emotional turmoil of the strangely, unpredictable unknown and captures the essence of sci fi that AVATAR fails to do. In many respects the blockbuster AVATAR pales in comparison to this intensely visceral scary movie. One of the most fascinating elements of this movie is that while it may appear to address the nature/nurture, sci fi conundrum of DNA splicing and gene manipulation, a further examination really leaves the question open for debate. The Julianne Moore look-a-like and Adrien Brody play scientists who embark on a controversial and what turns out to be an unpredictable, funny, and scary exploration and experience with a new life form that is incredible. Additionally there are for some, abhorrent scenes that raise additional moral/ethical questions.

This truly remarkable movie does almost, if not, in a few places cross the boundaries of the absurd plot points particularly in Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley's behavior, nevertheless the new life form and its evolution is a marvelous and frightening experience that truly enters into a new threshold on the sci fi screen. With remote resemblance to some of the elements found in ALIEN (1979) and THE ARRIVAL (1996), the pacing is excellent, the horror elements are great. The only problem is the consistent authenticity of the two main characters throughout the movie that give rise to a few script questions. Nevertheless, this movie is a breakthrough for being able to capture the core of the unknown in a deeply emotive, wondrous, and haunting fashion.
Some audience members may question the second half of this movie, but personally, the entire nature of science sometimes is the horrific jump into the unknown and unpredictabl. Sometimes the jump leads to glorious results and sometimes to the most terrible nightmarish ones.

This movie reflects the underbelly of pure science and the emotional highs and the possible disastrous lows that awaits anyone who dares to venture into a new level of exploration on whatever level. What we "expect" both in life and in a movie, and this movie in particular isn't necessarily what we expect or want, nevertheless this fictional movie has more to teach us about the "real" than what most of us expect.
