"Happy Go Lucky" is a family comedy with the underlying theme: a little wager adds to the pleasure of life
Happy Go Lucky Mandarin Synopsis :
"Happy Go Lucky" seeks to tackle the issue of gambling in a light-hearted yet touching manner. Hardcore gambler, Hock Lee Poh (Richard Low) is an ardent believer of Feng Shui, but is always down on his luck.
His eldest daughter Donna (Patricia Mok), though petty and calculative, spends all her time and money on lavish nightlife and hunky social escorts - till she loses everything in the end. Fu Xin (Fann Wong), Poh's illegitimate second daughter is born at an extremely inauspicious hour and thus labeled as the "jinx" of the family. However, Fu Xin actually is a surreptitious 'Lucky Star' who always manages to turn unfavourable conditions into favourable ones. Fu Xin sacrifices a lot for the family. And in a twist of fate and luck, she unexpectedly helps Poh to win a hefty sum of money. Meanwhile, Poh and Donna find themselves stranded along the streets of Cambodia in a failed attempt to recoup their losses at the gambling tables.

Ironically, when Resort World Sentosa's anticipated casino opened recently, here comes a Singaporean movie preaching about the disastrous outcome of hardcore gambling.
Starring the youthful Fann Wong as Fu Xin (translates as "lucky star"), the story can't help but to feel it has scooped up a sad Cinderella (minus the prince charming) feel onto its protagonist Fu Xin, an angelic foot masseuse. Constantly abused by her gambling-addict father Hock Lee Poh (Richard Low) and selfish half-blood sister Donna (Patricia Mok), Fu Xin inevitably finds emotional support within a group of sympathising old folks. However, regardless of the continuous name calling and negative food critic by her father and stepsister, she still remains caring towards them, trying her best to persuade them to change their habits. Her goody-two-shoes personality is of the extreme, which unfortunately turns her into somewhat an unlikeable character - too much of a pushover for this reviewer's liking.
Director Harry Yap conveys a rather stale, cautionary story on the tribulations of gambling addiction which seems to be an effort not worth the watch as we all know what gambling can do to us. It continuously preaches till a point of exasperation and in dire need of some comedy to relieve the conventional situation - men will spend on women and cars, while the ladies spend on clothes, clubs and hunky social escorts.
Interestingly enough, with all the non-gambling advice from Fu Xin, the story also shares a couple of Feng Shui taboos on the act while Lee Poh and Donna are in Cambodia in an attempt to recoup their losses at the gambling tables. One should not gamble near toilets or when you are already penniless and so on.
Fann Wong could've selected a better movie to star in, while Richard Low needs to find another role aside from his usual onscreen money-minded persona that has him laughing like a donkey for hours on end when his luck turns good together with his two goon friends.
"Happy Go Lucky" is overall an uninspiring and insipid film that seeks to put viewers in perspective. Frankly, it is also in need of a massive edit as the duration is too long for its own good.
