Magnolia Pictures has released the official movie trailer for Neil Jordan’s Ondine The dramatic fantasy story stars Colin Farrell as an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net who he believes to be a mermaid. Farrell’s current girlfriend and actress Alicja Bachleda plays the suspected mermaid.

The film premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and was met with good, but not great, reviews. Plot Summary: "Ondine" is the story of Syracuse, a simple fisherman who catches a beautiful and mysterious woman in his trawler's nets. The woman seems to be dead, but then she comes alive before Syracuse's eyes and he thinks he may be seeing things. However, with the help of his ailing, yet irrepressible daughter, Annie, he comes to believe that the fantastical might be possible and that the woman (Ondine) might be a myth come true. Ondine and Syracuse fall passionately in love, but just as we think the fairytale might go on forever, the real world intercedes. Then, after a terrible car crash and the return of a dark and violent figure from Ondine's past, hope eventually prevails and a new beginning is presented to Syracuse, Ondine and Annie.
Movie Reviews :
I saw this film on the afternoon of 18/04/2010 (they should have been showing A Prophet, but for some reason couldn't). I enjoyed it, but found it very difficult to catch all the dialogue, largely because it takes place between two people who are about eight inches apart. Others in the cinema had the same complaint. Has anyone else had similar problems? If you have keen hearing, however, I think you will enjoy this Irish fairy tale (which is what it is really). The acting is natural and there is some magnificent photography of one of the bleaker sections of the Irish coastline. The complications occur at the end when Ondine's true history is explained. Don't ask me!
I am a fan of Neil Jordan but I was extremely disappointed with Breakfast on Pluto, so I went to this movie with low expectations. Colin Farrell (once you get used to him with the sing songy Cork accent!)was super as was Alicia Bachleda. Along with the Butcher Boy and The Miracle the real star of the movie is a young actor (Alison Barry).
This is a fairytale interspersed with reality, it is a movie. I'm tired of reading reviewers criticising the fantasy elements conflicting with 'real life'. Suspend disbelief for God's sake , you are watching a piece of fiction, not a documentary.
This was a perfect movie for a lazy afternoon, it would even be suitable for kids from ages 8 upwards.Did not find it in the slightest bit boring or slow. To compare it with Moondance is completely unfair as that movie had both poor directing and a brutal script(in conjunction with some very dodgy acting).
