A 1970s-set comedy centered on three upstart professional men working at an insurance company.

Movie Review: Cemetery Junction:There's a lot of Ricky Gervais about nowadays. In a day and age where many achieve instant fame without doing anything, he is, if nothing else, an indication of the success you can enjoy if you at least try your hand at something. And he would appear to have proved quite popular at making people laugh, as his worldwide success would lay claim to.

He may be getting ever so slightly over-exposed at the moment, and developing the slight air of arrogance to go with it...but he and co writer/director Stephen Merchant have displayed quite a modest streak with this joint project of theirs, with the main man taking only a minor supporting role and Merchant basically a cameo, in what's quite a departure from the usual deadpan humour they're known for in The Office and Extras. Gervais seems to have been reminiscing on his own childhood, growing up in Reading, Berkshire and applied it to this rites of passage/coming of age tale about three friends with separate personalities and different outlooks that's obviously got an air of sentimentality about it.

In early 70s Berkshire, level headed young man Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to make something of himself instead of working in a factory like his opinionated father Len (Gervais), and so tries to make it as a door to door life insurance salesman for Mr. Kendrick (Ralph Fiennes), the wealthy and influential father of Julie (Felicity Jones) the girl he knew (and fancied) from school but who is shacked down with Mike (Matthew Goode), her father's protégé and Freddie's more ruthless work colleague. Meanwhile, Bruce (Tom Hughes) is the cocksure rebel of the group he hangs with, who thinks he has all the swagger but is a direction less loser, blaming everything on everyone around him but taking no responsibiltity himself. And finally, there's Snork (Jack Doolan) the comic relief of the group, who got his name by buying big glasses he thought made him look like Elton John, but made him look more like a cartoon character...all three want to get out...but only one will have the maturity and inner character to make it happen.
As others have noted, the film is a break away from the typical Brit youth flick, with more of a hope of air and optimism about it, in favour of a more grim and depressing tone. Minus some of the swearing and sex talk, it's a sort of Sunday afternoon film, that could pass muster on BBC 1. It's still principally a comedy, though, but here there is just the right balance between this and some more serious drama moments that the writers show they're equally adept at.

And it manages to get the balance just right so it's all wrapped up in just under two hours. CJ isn't an unforgettable film, and it goes by without making a lasting impression, but it shows it's writers and stars have versatile talents and can surprise and impress their fans.
