MOVIE REVIEW:

The first we heard (or to be more precise, saw) of this movie, "Coweb", was on this Code 3 DVD. Our interest was piqued- where did this action film come from? Why did we know so little of it? We were especially interested when we saw on the cover that none other than Xiong Xin Xin was the director. To our knowledge, we had not known of the veteran as a director (and we were right, this is his first feature film)- though our deepest impression of him was as the character Clubfoot Seven in Tsui Hark’s "Once Upon a Time in China".

But as the movie opened, what hopes we had of this direct-to-DVD release were quickly and firmly dashed. "Coweb’s" first scene is of the death of a young martial arts instructor’s father under rather suspicious circumstances. This opening is portent of many things to come. First, the numerous fade out, fade ins used throughout the movie. Used judiciously, such a technique could enhance the impact of a certain scene; used ad nauseum as in "Coweb", they are simply annoying.

Second, the just as frustrating visual trick of rewinding the last few seconds of the film then playing it back again, complete with a red 'REC' sign at the top right hand corner. Yes, we get the idea that someone is watching, that someone is recording what is going on. There’s scarcely a need to use the same gimmick over and over again. Third, the badder than bad sound design- and we’re not just talking about the added bone-crunching sound effects. Whoever was behind the soundtrack of this film clearly has not watched an action movie and how the music is supposed to build tension, not deflate it entirely.

Last and perhaps most inexcusably, the lazy camerawork of the fight sequences. If there is one reason why audiences are watching this film, it’s because of the fights. How exciting the fights actually are doesn’t really matter when the cameraman appears to be so afraid of getting kicked or punched that he places the camera a convenient distance away and doesn’t even bother to zoom into the action. We were almost ready to say 'bring it up close, dammit!'

Like most action films, one does not expect a 'wow' plot for "Coweb" to work; one looks forward rather to a multitude of action sequences designed to make us go 'wow' and at most a serviceable plot to get us from one fight to another. It seems the Thais have understood such expectations- hence the formula de rigueur of films like "Ong Bak", "Tom Yum Goong", "Chocolate" and "Muay Thai Fireball". A less than satisfactory plot aside, Xiong Xin Xin’s fight choreography in "Coweb" unfortunately suffers from being too choreographed and not enough of the 'wow' spontaneity that made the above-mentioned Thai action films such a thrilling experience.

Perhaps the only bright spark that "Coweb" has is its newcomer Jiang Lu Xia, a finalist from Jackie Chan’s China-based reality TV series The Disciple. Don’t judge her by her small build- she has the agility and ferocity of that similarly not to be trifled with Thai breakout star from "Chocolate" and certainly deserves a much better film to showcase her talents and abilities.

So we’re here to tell you that "Coweb" did not turn out to be the kick-ass action film we expected from Xiong Xin Xin. What prowess he may have behind the camera remains as yet hidden we hope to believe. Except for its star Jiang Lu Xia, "Coweb" is a disappointing effort through and through. No wonder we had heard so little of it before- such embarrassments are better off left unsaid and untold.

SYNOPSIS:

Four love stories by four talented Taiwanese first-time directors – well-known lyrist, Vincent Fang Wenshan; TV host, Huang Zijiao; online novelist, Jiu BaDao; and commercial director, Chen Yixian.

MOVIE REVIEW:

How apt it is, after the successful Taiwan movie Cape No. 7, that we are treated with this Taiwan production starring the Golden Horse winner’s Van Fan and Chie Tanaka. Oh, the star gazing doesn’t stop here. Throw in names like Annie Liu, Ethan Ruan, Alec Su, Ken Chu, Makiyo Claire Kuo Jing, Blue Lan, Lu Yi Ching, Charge Pu Hsueh Liang and Chang Hsiao Yen, and you’d get this omnibus of love stories that markets itself as the ultimate love experience. If you are a fan of these well known Hong Kong and Taiwan TV personalities and pop idols, then you’d be dazzled by the star gazing that’s in store for you.

The four stories centre themselves on different themes like death, memories, communication and destiny. Directed by Giddens Ko, Vincent Fang Wen Shan (Jay Chou’s favourite lyricist), Chen Yi Xian and Mickey Huang Zi Jiao (the famous TV host), viewers are brought onto a 92 minute razzle dazzle of love embodied by melodrama, tragedy, music and comedy.

When you have four filmmakers with four distinct styles, it’s only natural that you prefer one over the other. The first story about sentiments of two strangers sharing the same voice stars Fan and Liu, and the natural chemistry between them distracts you from the unnecessary plot twists that prove to be gimmicky. The second story about the production of a music video (as helmed by Fang, of course) stars Liu and Lan, and while the two good lookers provide eye candy for the younger viewers, the somewhat slipshod storytelling shows the thinness of the plot. The third story starring the very popular Ruan is a mood piece about the importance of communication with your loved one, and it easily stands out as the most competent of the lot. When you reach the fourth story directed by Huang, you wonder whether you should tolerate the over the top acting and exaggerated comedic style.

If your expectations for this movie aren’t too high, the four tales are easy to sit through. There isn’t much thinking involved, and there aren’t many feelings for the protagonists either. We guess that would be the down side of featuring so many stars in a weakly plotted movie, because all attention would be given to spotting the countless cameo appearances throughout the movie.

If you are a male viewer watching this with your female companion, expect reactions like: “Look, it’s Alec Su from The Little Tigers! Look, it’s Ken Chu from F4! Look, look, look! Ethan Ruan is gorgeous! Look, look, look! Blue Lan is simply charming!” Yes, you’ve been warned.

Reviews

I saw this last month at the 2009 Palm Springs International film Festival. This is the second feature film of writer/director/actress Karin Albou who received critical acclaim for her debut film La Petite Jersalem. As as writer and director Albou seems to have a promising career ahead of her as she knows how to put a film together and get the best out of her cast including herself as an actress as she plays the role of Myriam's stern but loving, smart and hard working mother Tita.

The Story

The film is set in 1942 in German occupied Tunisia as the German's are vying for the support of the Muslim population to be their allies in the promise of independence for Tunisia. 16 year old Nour (Olympe Borval) is a Muslim engaged to her cousin Khaled (Najib Oudghiri). Nour's best friend since their earliest childhood is Myriam (Lizzie Brouchere). Myriam is Jewish and the German occupation has brought understandably hard times and tension for the Jewish Tunisian population. Myriam longs for the love that her friend Nour sees in Khaled but Myriam is betrothed to a wealthy and much older Doctor Raoul (Simon Abkarian) who is being forced to work in sympathy to the Nazi occupation. Photographed by cinematographer Laurent Brunet this is a good film but despite the war setting there is not a lot of war action and the film centers around the relationship of Myriam and Nour and this could be categorized as a chick flick. I liked it though and would give it a 7.5 out of 10 and recommend it.

Synopsis

Starring John Leguizamo as TV reporter Manolo Bonilla faced with a journalism dilemma; Cronicas is a suspenseful thriller that questions who the true monster is: the criminal, the media, or our society? Manolo Bonilla is a star reporter for a Miami-based tabloid TV show who is determined to unearth a serial killer that hunts children in a small town in Ecuador. But how far will Manolo go to get the story? The closer he gets to uncovering the truth, the more he finds his carefully planned story spinning dangerously out of control. An examination of journalistic ethics, the film explores the willingness of the media to surrender its morals for a shot at fame and profit.

The Plot Summary

The hot and humid village of Babahoyo, Ecuador is besieged by an elusive serial killer. The police have no clues but this mystery has become an obsession for Miami-based tabloid television reporter... The hot and humid village of Babahoyo, Ecuador is besieged by an elusive serial killer. The police have no clues but this mystery has become an obsession for Miami-based tabloid television reporter Manolo Bonilla (John Leguizamo) who is convinced breaking this story will make him a star. Bonilla has traveled to the remote village with his producer, Marisa (Leonor Watling) and cameraman, Ivan (José Maria Yazpik) to cover the story for the tabloid TV show "One Hour With The Truth". Manolo has dubbed the killer as the "Monster of Babahoyo" on the show and is determined to uncover the killer's true identity. Tension in the town reaches a boiling point when Vinicio Cepeda (Damián Alcázar), a poor traveling salesman, accidentally runs over a child, and an angry mob led by the child's father, Don Lucho (Henry Layana), attacks him in the streets. Both Vinicio and Don Lucho are arrested. Manolo, who happens to be present during the incident, interviews both men inside a jail teeming with violence. Vinicio tells Manolo that he has information about the "Monster," but in exchange for it, he wants Manolo to do a story exposing his unjust arrest to sway public opinion. After checking out Vinicio's information, Manolo immediately suspects that Vinicio himself could be the killer, but chooses not to tell the corrupt local authorities; he'd rather use the information to make a great story for his show. How far will Bonilla go to get his story? Where is the line between a journalist revealing the truth and inventing it? How powerful is the media? Palm Pictures and Anhelo Productions present CRONICAS, written and directed by Sebastián Cordero (RATAS, RATONES, RATEROS) and produced by Alfonso Cuarón (HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN) and Jorge Vergara (Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN) and Guillermo del Toro (HELLBOY), Bertha Navarro and Isabel Dávalos. The executive producer is Frida Torresblanco.
In the sometimes savvy media melodrama "Crónicas," John Leguizamo plays Manolo Bonilla, the charismatic star reporter for a tabloid investigative news show, "One Hour With the Truth," that originates in Miami and is broadcast across Latin America. A swaggering little fame monger ablaze with ambition and hot to pounce on the next gory sensation, Manolo descends with his producer, Marisa (Leonor Watling), and his cameraman, Ivan (José María Yazpik), on the dirt-poor Ecuadorian village of Babahoyo.

Cronicas Hollywood Movie Review:

Manolo has come to interview the relatives of three local children who were slaughtered by the notorious "Monster of Babahoyo," the television nickname for a serial murderer of children who rapes and tortures his victims before killing them.

His arrival coincides with the return to Babahoyo of Vinicio Cepeda (Damián Alcázar), a scruffy, soulful-eyed traveling Bible salesman. Driving into the village, Vinicio accidentally strikes and kills a young boy who darts in front of his truck.

Aghast and guilt-stricken, Vinicio backs his vehicle away from the body. But as he does, he is set upon by villagers swarming around the scene, who assume he was trying to escape. Already hysterical over the killings, they drag him from his truck, and the victim's father, Don Lucho (Henry Layana), furiously slops gasoline over him. A match is tossed. Manolo's crew films it all.

This harrowing scene of mob violence and an attempted lynching under the eye of the camera makes a great beginning. The reluctance of these tabloid news hounds to intervene says it all about live television's icy voyeurism. Anyone who has observed a news crew in action will recognize the sense of entitlement and the high-handed attitudes of jaded media types who act like God's handpicked snoops as they nose around in downscale environments where they are both adored and feared.
He coyly claims to have information about the Monster of Babahoyo. As Manolo coaxes out his story, Vinicio tells of meeting the killer in his travels and hearing his boastful confession. To prove he's not making it up, he directs Manolo to a burial site where the crew finds a girl's body but refrains from telling the police.

The movie begins losing credibility at the point at which "Crónicas" narrows to an ambiguous cat-and-mouse game played by the egomaniacal reporter sensing the scoop of his life and the prisoner whom Manolo immediately suspects is the mass murderer. Although the screenplay throws in obstacles and contradictions to deepen the texture, "Crónicas" never regains a secure footing.

Nothing that follows in "Crónicas" (the word means chronicles, or news reports), which was written and directed by Sebastián Cordero, lives up to this initial tableau of chaos, grief and media intrusion. Although the fire is put out and Vinicio and his attacker are both jailed, the village is still in an uproar, and the chances that Vinicio will escape vigilante retribution seem slender. When Manolo, pursuing the incident for a story, interviews Vinicio in prison, the desperate Bible salesman tries to bargain with the reporter to shoot a segment that might influence the judge to set him free.

We meet Vinicio's new wife, Esperanza (Gloria Leiton), and her young son from a previous marriage, Robert (Luiggi Pulla), to whom Vinicio is a devoted caretaker. Meanwhile, Manolo dallies with Marisa, who is married to the all-powerful news anchor in Miami; the fate of the story being prepared changes from hour to hour as Manolo resists pressure from on high to leave Ecuador and pursue another story in Medellín, Colombia. A strait-laced police captain, Bolívar Rojas (Camilo Luzuriaga), does his feeble best to take charge of the investigation that Manolo has commandeered for his own career ends.Watch online Movie Trailer free Cronicas Spanish film .The film Directed by Sebastián Cordero

Astro Boy Hollywood Movie Review:

Astro Boy is a computer-animated 3-D film based on the highly successful Japanese franchise of the same name by Osamu Tezuka.

Family friendly fare has returned to theaters with a vengeance the past few weeks with animated fare such as "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs," the "Toy Story" re-releases in 3-D and for older kids, "Where The Wild Things Are." Next weekend a new hero comes on the scene with the big screen debut of "Astro Boy."

Born over 50 years ago in a Japanese Manga, "Astro Boy" is the story of a young robot (voiced by Freddie Highmore) who was created by a brilliant scientist (Nic Cage) in the image of the son he's lost. Unable to meet the expectations of his still grieving father, Astro Boy embarks on an adventure where he gets entangled in an underground world of robot gladiators (fun!) before he returns home to make peace with his creator.

Summit Entertainment just released two new clips from "Astro Boy" that are embedded in the story below. Or, to see larger versions of "Robot Games" and "Peacekeeper Battle" click here and here respectively.

Scheduled to hit the theaters on 9th October 2009, ‘Love Ka Tadka’ revolves around the life of Aditya (Sameer Dattani) and Sheetal (Nauheed Cyrusi). Aditya is a middle class guy, who works as an executive in ‘Easy Money’. Struggling to make ends meet, he has only three main things in his life - his work, his friend Vicky and his corrupt boss. One fine day, Aditya bumps into Sheetal, a beautiful girl who mistakes him for a ‘Romeo’. And every time Aditya tries to clear the misunderstanding and prove his innocence, following the advice of Vicky, he ends up creating more mix-ups and confusions. The film Directed by Gautam Adhikari,
In the process of clearing the confusion and bringing everything on track, Aditya ends up falling in love with Sheetal. Soon, the two of them get married also, but the story does not culminate in a ‘Happily Ever After’ (‘picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’). In fact, this is where the actual story begins. Rather, it starts getting more chaotic and even much more amusing. The very first problem is that Sheetal considers Aditya to be a Manager, who lives in a plush condominium (as per the lies he told her, to woo her). As expected, she becomes livid on learning that he is an executive and lives in a chawl.
Inspite of the difficulties, Aditya and Sheetal manage to sort out their differences and also pool in money to buy an apartment. However, before this could happen, Sheetal's dad (Satish Kaushik) insists on coming to stay with her. The couple somehow manages to make him stay in Vicky’s house, till they find an apartment of their own. As if this wasn’t enough, when they go to buy their new house, they run short on funds. In order to help them out, Vicky ends up cutting a deal with the house owner. He promises that either they will pay the balance within a year or forfeit even that amount which they have already given to the owner.

After crossing all hurdles, Aditya and Sheetal manage to get their own house. However, just when they think that everything is fine, a new problem crops up. They come to know that their house is in a strictly vegetarian society. While they agree to compromise on the fact, Sheetal's father, who is strictly an anti vegetarian, presents a problem. As it is, he is not happy with Aditya. So, the couple decides to hide the fact that the society is pure vegetarian.

What follows is a series of comic situations, where Aditya and Sheetal try to do a balancing act between the latter’s father and the society members, by smuggling the forbidden food items into the house.

Plot Summary

The film chronicles Earhart's rise to fame and follows the relationship between Earhart and her husband, publisher
Synopsis:

16-year-old Darren was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend Steve, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty. Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady and a gigantic barker. As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what’s left of his humanity.

Earhart's early aviation triumphs and meteoric rise to fame and fortune were propelled along by her tempestuous partnership and eventual marriage to publisher George Putnam. Bound by mutual ambition, admiration and, ultimately a great love, their bond could not be broken even with her brief passionate affair with Gene Vidal. Ms. Earhart was the first woman to solo the Atlantic and was the first pilot, man or woman, to fly unaccompanied across the Pacific. In Amelia's attempt to be the first to fly around the world in an equatorial flight her life was tragically cut short with her mysterious and untimely disappearance over the South Pacific in 1937.

The Story ::

After becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia was thrust into a new role as America's sweetheart - the legendary "goddess of light," known for her bold, larger-than-life charisma. Yet, even with her global fame solidified, her belief in flirting with danger and standing up as her own, outspoken woman never changed. She was an inspiration to people everywhere, from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (Cherry Jones) to the men closest to her heart: her husband, promoter and publishing magnate George P. Putnam (Richard Gere), and her long time friend and lover, pilot Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor). In the summer of 1937, Amelia set off on her most daunting mission yet: a solo flight around the world that she and George both anxiously foresaw as destined, whatever the outcome, to become one of the most talked-about journeys in history. Amelia is an upcoming 2009 dramatized biographical film based on the life of Amelia Earhart, starring Hilary Swank as Earhart along with a cast that includes Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, and Virginia Madsen. It is directed by Mira Nair based on a script written by Ronald Bass.

Amelia Hollywood Movie Review:

I’ll be showing Mira Nair’s Amelia at Sneak Previews this week. I’ve seen the biopic of the vanished aviatrix Amelia Earhart, which stars Oscar magnet Hilary Swank and Richard Gere, and look forward to grilling the screenwriters, Ron Bass (Rain Man) and Anna Hamilton Phelan (Gorillas in the Mist). The question at hand: how do you tackle a movie biography these days, when authenticity is at such a premium?

Some biopics of well-known figures work as movies but lured a narrow audience: Steve Rash’s The Buddy Holly Story, Bennett Miller’s Capote, Gus Van Sant’s Milk, Ed Harris’s Pollock, Clint Eastwood’s Bird, Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull, Hal Ashby’s Bound for Glory, Oliver Stone’s Nixon and Bill Condon’s Kinsey. Others grabbed wider crowds by capturing the magic of their source: Julie & Julia, Ray, Ali, Schindler’s List, Lawrence of Arabia, Out of Africa, Amadeus, Malcolm X, Reds, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Walk the Line, Patton, Bonnie and Clyde, Gandhi, The Queen and The Aviator .
And some biopics just don’t ring true: Cleopatra, Anna and the King, De-Lovely, The Hurricane, Alexander, Beyond the Sea, and Toronto opener Creation, starring Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" - Synopsis

Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

14-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what's left of his humanity.

Darren Shan is a regular teenage kid. He and his friend Steve find out about a Freak Show coming to town an work hard at trying to find tickets. They do, and together they go to "Cirque du Freak" where they see many strange acts including a wolf-man and a bearded lady. Steve and Darren think that it is all a joke until a vampire, Larten Crepsley comes on with a very poisonous spider that he makes do tricks. When Steve sees this man he freaks out a bit but won't tell Darren why. After the show, Steve tells Darren to go home, and that he will follow later. Darren says yes but instead sneaks upstairs to see what Steve is up to. He sees Steve talking to Mr. Crepsley and overhears their conversation. Steve tells Mr. Crepsley that he knows that his real name is Vur Horston an is a Vampire and he tells Larten that he would like to join him and become an apprentice. Mr Crepsley says he must test Steve before he agrees, and when he does he reveals that Steve has "bad blood" and he will not transform him. Steve becomes angry but Darren leaves the theatre and doesn't see what happen next. Darren goes home and thinks about what Steve did but also cannot stop thinking about Mr. Crepsley's Spider.

Cirque Du Freak: the Vampire's Assistant" Hollywood Movie Review:

The next day he steals the spider with the hopes that he will be able to make it perform tricks too. Meanwhile, Steve is acting as if nothing happened. Darren manages to train the spider by using a flute to hypnotize it (what Larten did). Darren invites Steve over to show him the spider, but when Darren is making it perform tricks on Steve, Darren's sister comes in and breaks the noise, and thus causes the spider to bite Steve. Steve becomes very ill, and is rushed to the hospital where the doctors say that there is nothing they can do. Darren decides to see Mr. Crepsley about the possibility of an antidote. The vampire agrees to give him the only cure if Darren agrees to become his assistant, and half vampire. He does. Steve gets better but starts to realize that Darren is now part vampire and becomes angry, jealous and betrayed. Larten stages Darren's death and Darren is burried. Mr. Crepsley comes to dig up Darren and leave. He does and gives Darren a moment to say goodbye to his hometown. Then Steve shows up and tells Darren about all he knows. He says that Darren and Mr. Crepsley were planning the betrayal all along and that Steve doesn't really have bad blood, which Darren knows is not true. He tries to explain about the spider, but Steve cuts a small cross into the flesh of his left palm and swears on his blood that he will kill Darren and his mentor Mr. Crepsley. Darren shakes off the warning and leaves with Mr. Crepsley. It is rumored that the film will be based on the first three books, if this is true then we will see Darren's reluctance to accept his life as a vampire and meet the character Sam, on top on this he will have his first run in with the vampenezee a race of creatures who kill to eat unlike the vampires.Watch online Movie Trailer free Cirque Du Freak the Vampire's Assistant English Hollywood film. The film Directed by Cirque Du Freak the Vampire's Assistant

It is important to note that in this story, vampires are not evil creatures. They never kill when they feed, do not bit in order to transform others, and do not have an evil purpose in life.

And Just so you know. The vampires in this movies aren't those, fanged creatures who cant go into the light, or who can turn into bats or anything like that stereo-type crap. It is more realistic. Like how they don't live forever, they just age real slowly. They don't suck blood through their teeth, they cut open a vein, suck a bit of blood then heal the wound with their spit. They can go into sunlight but not forever because they can get burnt real easily.

Also note that if the film is the content of the first three books it may be created as a stand alone movie, however there could be up to three sequels as the saga consisted of twelve books split into 4 trilogies, they could all easily be put into 4 films of the separate trilogies and flow well together

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, occasionally advertised as The Vampire's Assistant: The Cirque Du Freak Saga Begins, is the 2009 film adaptation of the first three books of the book series The Saga of Darren Shan by author Darren Shan. The film began principal photography on February 8, 2008 in New Orleans and ended on June 3, 2008.[1] The film will be distributed by Universal Studios. A portion of The Vampire's Assistant was filmed on a set constructed within New Orleans City Park, approximately 1000 feet off of the side of the road, along Harrison Avenue. The film was originally set for release on January 15, 2010, but was moved forward to October 23,

Review

NEW YORK -- A hit throughout Southeast Asia when it was released last year, "Ong Bak 2" is a throwback to the kung fu flicks of a previous generation. First-rate action scenes alternate with florid melodrama, and jaw-dropping stunts try to compensate for saccharine plot twists. An excellent vehicle for martial-arts champ Tony Jaa (the screen name for Panom Yeerum), "Ong Bak 2" will please action fans while drawing barely a glance from mainstream viewers.
The original "Ong Bak," which also starred Jaa, was a thriller set in present-day Bangkok and dealt with smuggling, poaching, drugs and slavery. While it hits on many of the same topics, "Ong Bak 2" takes place in the 15th century and is built around a political feud between decadent rulers and their opponents.
Jaa plays Tien, forced on the run as a child after his parents are murdered, and then raised in a rebel gang led by Chernung (Sorapong Chatree). Headquartered in a majestic jungle hideout, the Garuda Wing Cliff rebels operate much like Robin Hood's men, staging raids on local despots and liberating enslaved peasants. Tien works his way up to leader of the gang, then sets out on his own quest for vengeance.
It takes almost a half-hour for Jaa to appear on screen, and for large stretches his acting, including his fighting, feels a bit perfunctory. Kung fu aficionados will appreciate the sequences showing Tien's martial arts training, captured in loving detail.
The action is surrounded by impressive filmmaking. Jaa jumps across a herd of elephants, leads attacks on enormous castles and takes part in elaborate ethnic dances, supported all the while by strong production design, wonderful costumes and assured editing.
Like the original, "Ong Bak 2" leads up to a slam-bang finale in which Jaa takes on dozens of opponents in a fight to the finish. Here's where his skill and dedication come into focus. Even the most jaded viewer can't help but be astonished at Jaa's athleticism as he leaps, spins, flips and at one point takes a three-story fall

Talentime Movie Review

It's a simple equation. One pair of supporting parents, the mother beautiful and slim and the father ruggedly handsome and chubby. Add in a very cool maid. Plus a daughter or two who would inevitably fall in love with a guy from another race. Oh, and make them all speak quite good English. Then you’d have a Yasmin Ahmad movie.
Admittedly, I did not really know of her until after Sepet took off. Even then, I did not really bother getting caught up with the hype. But I took a chance going to see Gubra with some friends and I fell in love with her work.
Gubra was real. Like the hospital scene where you saw the buttocks of one of the patients. It’s real. Just like the dialogue and the situations in the movie.
So I waited for her next movie. Mukhsin. Again. She blew me away with its raw honesty. Her movies are not totally complicated. The story’s simple and easy to grasp. But she crafted each and every frame beautifully that the movies are transformed into works of art.
After Mukhsin, came Muallaf, and I was salivating, waiting for its release but it was never released in Malaysia. Lucky foreign people…
Then I got wind of Talentime and obviously I have to watch it at any cost. And when an invite was issued to the radio, I jumped on the chance to go and cover the preview at Cineleisure.
And I got to meet Yasmin the genius herself before the movie was shown. I was practically buzzing coz somehow deep inside I knew the movie would be simple and realistic but deeply beautiful and touching.

From the beginning, it was quite the visual treat. It was funny in the most inappropriate places. It was serious as the issues were touched are often quite taboo or sensitive.

Talentime, while a trademark tearjerker of Yasmin Ahmad’s, fails to show how the chemistry between its two main leads develops. While it is clear that the two are deeply in love after some point in the film, as well as undergoing some protest by one of their parents, it is not revealed why the wealthy Melur who obviously has social connections would so suddenly fall for a boy she has just met, having shared perhaps only very little time together. The film, of course, is to be lauded for its realistic and humanistic portrayal of the multicultural interactions in Malaysia, as it extends dimension to characters otherwise stereotypically defined in Cerekarama films.

The actors playing Melur, Mahesh, and Hafiz give a grounded performance worthy of a title such as ‘Talentime’. While it is not known if the actors really do converse in sign language, their fluency in it is admirable. Once again the parents’ flirtatiousness towards each other is displayed. What is truly touching is not the romance of the two main fledglings but the almost innocent banter between Azean Irdawaty and Jit Murad, as Azean’s character lies dying, visited by Jit’s charismatic stranger.

Adibah Amin splendidly plays a "Wassup" spewing headteacher, who interestingly views the oft-touted "deklamasi sajak" routines as lame and "memang pedih pun," referring to a line from the sajak.

Review

Attili Sattibabu (Ravi Teja), a petty thief falls in love with Neeraja Goswami (Anushka). His life soon turns upside down when a kid comes to him claiming that she is his daughter. It is later revealed that the kid is daughter of Vikram Rathod (Ravi Teja) who is hiding in Hyderabad from the bandits of Chambal valley. This Vikram Rathod and Sattibabu are identical.

After a shoot out and some action episodes, Vikram Rathod dies and Sattibabu takes care of his daughter. Sattibabu moves on to Chambal valley and completes the unfinished mission of ACP Vikram Rathod. As the saying goes, all that starts well ends well.

To put in a one sentence, Vikramarkudu is typical 'Rajamouli' film. How does one define the 'Rajamouli film'? The film should have an exotic backdrop other than our Andhra Pradesh, a flashback, 'sexy' songs', liberal dose of skin show, and pulsating action episodes. Vikramarkudu has all these and above all has rich production values. This time he uses Chambal valley as the backdrop for the story and Vikramarkudu has plenty of mass dialogues laced with lots of double entendres.

The first half is full of lighter moments with catchy songs like "Jintaka..Jintaka..". And heroine Anushka has put her curvaceous body to the full view of audiences. Her excessive skin show, and good action episodes are major attraction for the film.

The second half is a bit slacken but this is where the real drama happens. If one looks in critical manner, Vikramarkudu doesn't pass the muster. For it has full of illogical moments and continuity problems.

The entire story itself defies the logic. But again these days, people excuse such things if it offers entertainment. And Vikramarkudu scores on this point.

What's hot?
Hero Ravi Teja plays dual roles for the first time in his career as lead actor. He has given fine performance both as Attili Sattibabu and Vikram Rathod. Playing comic roles is his forte and in the role of Sattibabu he is at his best. As Vikram Rathod he looks better and very restrained. He shines well but the two characters collide you don't find any differences (there comes the continuity problem).

Sexy girl Anushka has scored on the glamour front. And she is also good when she performs the mannerism of 'Jitakaa' in the end in the similar manner of Ravi Teja. Ajay who had been playing sidekicks has now elevated to the main villain in the film. His character and his getup look logical but he looks menacing and well fitted.

There is nothing great about the script. The story pattern is similar to that of his past hits - Simhadri and Chatrapathi, but his screenplay is good. He throws right 'turns' in the narration when the film slackens there by keeping the audiences glued to the film. Music by M M Keeravani is another asset. His background score is really excellent. Camera work by Sarvesh Murari is just okay. M L Kumar Chowdhary should be commended for its rich production values. Though the film's milieu is Chambal Valley in Madhya Pradesh, it is actually shot in Badami area in Karnataka.
What's not!
The film has no logic. And it has excessive double meaning dialogues like "Needi Andhra Pradesh..Naadi Madhya Pradesh. Naa Madhya Pradesh loki raku..".

Suvai Karumbae---
Vocals: Benny Dayal, Ujjayini
Lyrics: Kavinpaa
A fun number with hip-hop beats, belted out with gusto by Benny Dayal. The lyrics touch upon the hedonistic enjoyment of youth. Some spirited inputs from the guitar, keyboard and a bit of violin.
Adhu Oru Oru---
Vocals: Vijay Yesudas, Ujjayini
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

Simple lyrics that have been put into very smooth rhythms by the composer. The violins, flute and the sax have been sensitively used here. Do we hear the cello too? (especially when they sing’ tholaitthom, yaasitthaen etc) This song talks of disillusionment in love. The Kiravani raga scale appears to have been used. Both the singers are so easy on the ears.
Mazhaiyae Mazhaiyae---
Vocals: Haricharan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
This does remind you of ‘Suvai Karumbae’, being in the same Karaharapriya scale. But it has solid rhythms and some wow guitar stuff! Haricharan is good as ever in articulating rediscovered love.

Peranmai - Story about a forest officer (Jayam Ravi) foils the plan of a group of terrorists trying to enter the country with the help of 5 girls. Watch Online Movie Trailer
Nothing is going to stop film buffs from getting charged up this Deepavali. For, 'Peranmai', an action-packed heavy budget entertainer directed by S P Jananathan with 'Jayam' Ravi in the lead is getting ready to hit the screens.

Ravi has lost weight for the role of a forest officer in this film. He plays a one-man army in 'Peranmai', similar to that of Sylvester Stallone in 'Rambo'. Vasundra, Saranya, Varsha, Tanusika and Liyasree play the lead female roles.

"I was impressed when Jananathan narrated the story to me. I did rigorous work-outs to suit the role. I learnt martial arts and archery for the movie. Shooting in dense jungles was a great experience," says the actor.

Hailing Ravi, Jananathan says, "He is an actor of commitment and dedication. I am sure that this film is going to be a milestone in Ravi's career."

'Peranmai' is produced by Ayngaran International, a production house synonym with grandeur. After the critical success of 'Iyarkkai' and the commercial success of 'E', Jananathan has been entrusted with the job of making 'Peranmai' by Karunamoorthy and Arun Pandian of Ayngaran.

Thanks to the producers, the film will be seeing some novel technical stuff like helicopter cameras being used for the first time in Tamil cinema.

According to reliable sources, the movie is about how a forest officer (played by Ravi), with the help of five girls, foils the plans of terrorists to enter the country.

Former Mr Universe and Hollywood actor Roland Kickinger plays the baddie. The film has Ravi doing a full length action role as a tribal and forest guard who fights against international terrorists led by Kickinger who are trying to destroy our forest and thereby the ecological system using bio technology.

Music Review:

Vidyasagar means melody. In the company of filmmaker S P Jananathan, he has proved his mastery in coming up with an engrossing music album, that is, 'Peranmai'.

With a group of young singers, the music composer has managed to weave a magic of sorts here. The movie has ‘Jayam’ Ravi donning the role of a forest officer. Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics.

1. Kattu Puli Adicchu
Singer: K K, Jassie Gift

The song is simple and straightforward. It has peppy percussive rhythms with a touch of classical raaga. The good use of flute for the song about forest is straightaway catchy. KK in the company of Jassie Gift has rendered it in rich style.2. Kaadu Kalai Katta
Singer: Madhu Balakrishnan

Melody and Madhu Balakrishnan are always inseparable. Here is one which is soft and scintillating. Lyrics are the backbone of this song. It has good soft tempo without a jubilant pep all through. Vidyasagar has the knack of rendering a soft tune coupled with peppy beats. Hats off music composer!

3. Yaerathaazha Ezhu Mani
Singer: Sadhana Sargam

Sadhana Sargam's mellifluous voice does the trick here. Though the song is bit flat, the rendition by Sadhana Sargam lends to it some dignity.
Again Vidyasagar's mastery in fusing classical raaga for a film song comes to the fore here.

4. When the Boys
Singer: Sonia Irabar, Sianed Jones

Seemingly different from other songs, it has the touch of pop numbers in it. Newcomers Sonia Irabar and Sianed Jones have rendered it with more Anglican accent. The background music is uncomplicated and minimal.

5. Thuppakki Pennae
Singer: Shalini, Megha, Feji, Suvi

A breezy number which is attractive all the way. A fusion of West and the East, Vidyasagar has rendered a medley here. Seemingly aimed at wooing young audience, this song which has vibrant lyrics is powered by a young brigade of singers, who render it with zeal and energy.

Review

There is a criticism, often valid, that Malayalam film music is disturbingly moving away from its traditional melodies and simple but soulful tunes. Most of the modern-day songs are about rhythms and high-pitched chorus.

But one hearing of The film is good enough to convince you that all is not lost. We all known Sreenivas to be one of the best singers of our generation. In Seethakalyanam he has brought to fore a new facet of his personality. As a music director, he is absolutely original and has given melody a full run. The songs, to put it simply, are outstanding. Listening to them is a pleasure. Heavily inspired by the strong Carnatic tradition of the land, Sreenivas has come with a peach of an album. The only thing you miss is Sreenivas as a singer.

A number dipped in all the traditional niceties. The voices of Sharath, Madhu Balakrishnan and Karthick give it a larger-than-life feel. The energy and enterprise that they bring is beautiful. Anuradha Sreeram, the female singer, takes the overall impact to new heights. Her strong foundations in Hindustani and Carnatic come more than handy. In higher octaves, she is, in one word, splendid.

The pick of the album. Really. But how do you do justice to this melody in ordinary words? How will everyday adjectives suffice to describe this gem in musical verse? If the tune is beautiful, Mathangi’s voice is even more so. After this song, music directors cannot afford to miss her out. Starting with the Sreenivas’s own humming, the song takes off to great heights straightaway with Mathangi mesmerizing all through. Well, don’t read this. Listen to the number. You will understand how language cannot match music!

This is an undiluted Carnatic song with all the right nuances infused by Unni Krishnan. The essential beauty of this traditional Thiagaraja number, in raga Bahudari, is enhanced in the rich timbre of Unni’s voice. The music director has not tampered with the krithi and has let it all flow like a beautiful river. Listen to it, with eyes closed, you will perhaps see God.
